I underestimated this small restaurant in Skokie. We stopped by to grab something to eat, and we chose this restaurant. Our group consists of eight people, and the restaurant appears to be crowded with just the presence of us. They have only a few tables inside, but they also have some outdoor seating. Even if the restaurant was small, it was definitely spotless. They have a pretty nice selection of different sandwiches. The service was quick, even if we ordered many different sandwiches. I must say that their sandwiches have a nice portion. On the other hand, the price seems fair and reasonable. The sandwich I ordered was actually fresh, and it was really good. We have different orders, and everyone says that the sandwiches they ordered are good too. Amazing experience!! My husband and I were in the area, wanted to try a local joint. Google pointed us to Spiros. Peter and his staff were extremely welcoming as soon as we walked in the door. Told us about the history or Spiros and recommended some options for us. Peter even made us a Bomber to try!! Which was the BEST sandwich I've ever had!! This place is right across the street from where I live. I don't know if there is a gender difference as to who actually thinks the bomber is great. There was so much mayonnaise on the sandwich with meat that I thought it was disgusting I couldn't eat it and threw it away. Having said that, I have gotten a Reuben from here that was great and I will say their fries are consistently very good. I did get Greek soup once it was extremely thick and almost gooey. Tasted good but I was a little apprehensive that I would get sick from it which I did not. Also they close super early at 7 PM. If you come in at 6:45 if they will not be happy. read more

What a pleasant and clean place! They have a spin on the traditional Italian beef sandwich that is just wonderful. It is called the Bomber. Now, before you get your panties all in a bunch, let me tell you that they do indeed have the Chicago traditional Italian beef and the combo, etc. They do not disguise the Bomber as anything else other than what it is. The Bomber uses Swiss cheese and a mayo based sauce instead of the mozzarella or provolone and the 'gravy' which is the juice of meat drippings and Italian seasoning. It is Italian beef, on French bread. But it is its own thing. I like it! I like them both! I also like the pita options. The Gyro style chicken pita is nothing more than a heavenly flavorful football of food packed with perfectly seared chicken tenderloins, veggies and tzatziki sauce. And an aftertaste that lingers for hours to remind you that YOU HAD A GREAT LUNCH! The other reason why this is a 5 star deli in my book, is the owner. My family and I dined here on a Saturday, in the late afternoon. Very nice place, very clean, great menu selection and the guy behind the counter was very nice. My husband ordered the Original Poorboy, my son and a steak and cheese and I had the tuna salad melt. We all shared an order of fries. Both my husband really liked his sandwich. He said it was tasty and the "Come Back Sauce" was good. He said net time he will try the Bomber. My son really liked his steak and cheese. I was surprised he finished all of it. We each tried a bite of his. The beef was really tender and seasoned well, I had the tuna salad melt. I should know by now to ask what is inside the tuna salad when I order. This was my fault, I did not. They put pimento in their tuna salad. I know this is a common ingredient for some regional recipes. I personally don't like pimento so this completely ruined the sandwich for me. The fires were good. The primary reason for the 3 stars is I thought the prices were a bit high. read more

5 stars for the sub sandwiches and the 'Bomber'. The bomber is a hot Italian beef with Swiss cheese, pickle, onion and their special sauce on a great piece of French bread. It comes in two sizes. It may sound a little funky but it's so good. The subs (they call them Poor Boys) are equally as good IMO with the same excellent crunchy bread with sesame seeds. They also have hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, steak sandwiches, deli sandwiches, grilled chicken breast on a pita and several daily specials that gets you fries and a drink. Also a catering menu and up to a 6 foot party sub. Friendly service. In fact I got there soon after they opened and the beef wasn't quite ready but they warmed up enough for my sandwich. I noticed a breakfast item called the scrambled mess that's basically a western omelet on toasted french bread. I'll let you know as I'll be trying that too. There are about 8 tables to eat inside. I should have taken a picture of the sandwiches but I was so excited to eat that I forgot :) I haven't been here in some time and now I'm asking myself why? read more

I'm surprised to be first, as this is a popular lunch spot at my office. Today was my first visit (buying lunch for my team during our busy season opens my food horizons to places that I wouldn't have bothered to try), and I don't anticipate returning. It's all fine, but it's just not my kind of food--old-school, straightforward deli sandwiches and hot offerings such as burgers, Italian sausage, poorboys, etc. I tried a few fries, which weren't anything special. The onion rings were way too salty, which must have come from the batter, because I watched the cook pull them out of the fryer, and he never salted them. I DID like that they waited until I showed up to throw the onion rings down. By the time that I was rung up and paid, they were putting the bag together and the rings were piping hot right from the oil. I ate one in the car and burnt my mouth. I ordered the chicken philly sandwich, which featured a good roll and big chunks of chicken. It tasted decent but was too soggy and cheesy. It fell apart about one-third of the way through. And they put tomatoes on it. Huh? There was some miscommunication during the phone order which led me to believe that they take credit cards at the store but not for delivery. So I drove all the way down there in the snow, only to find that they take only cash or checks. The bill was $33.12, and thank goodness that I had exactly $34.06 on my person. It sucked to be wiped out of cash, but at least I had enough to avert delay and humiliation. Lots of my colleagues like this place, but it's just not for me. And they need a credit-card machine. read more

Have been visiting Spiros' since way back at the old location when Spiro was still working the counter. His son Peter, and all the staff are still always very accomodating and friendly. Cant do better in the area for fresh made subs or hot sandwiches. Don't even get me started on the Bomber and beef offerings. We have to travel from Gurnee to Spiros' and then to Milwaukee to deliver Bombers to my son at school ! Yes, they are that good ! Went in for a burger because a neighbor raved about them, but I walked out with a bomber. I got the 12" bomber thinking I would eat half and save half for later. Well I about finished the whole 12" because it was too good. The sandwich cost less than any of the chain sandwich shops and so good. Thankfully I didn't order fries that my neighbor said were a must. They looked and smelled great but I would have been in a food coma. I am very disappointed with this place. I came in there on my lunch break. Ordered an Italian beef dipped with hot peppers and fries on the side to go. What do I get? A very annoyed man that made me feel like I was bothering him. Dried sandwich with no hot peppers. No ketchup for the fries or napkins. He basically threw the bag at me. I'm giving it 2 stars because most of the sandwiches taste awesome (The Reuben, Philly, Bomber, and Big Daddy). It's the service that is truly lacking. Placed order multiple times (Every establishment deserves a second chance) the phone just kept ringing. When you finally get someone to answer it sounds like you are speaking with a high teenager. He didn't bother to ask for name, or give you a time estimate he simply says "ok, come over". I guess he is not concerned that I'm going to waste my lunch time waiting on them to make my sandwich or sandwiches as most of the time we order for the department. read more

I remembered reading a recent Yelp email about great Sandwich Shops in the North Shore just as I rode past Spiro's Deli. I've driven past this place at least 500 times over the past 20 years, but never stopped in. So I turned around this time and went in. They were still open (they close at 7PM Mon-Fri) and I was greeted by Peter, the owner. I told him I was a first timer and asked what he would recommend. Without hesitation, he said, "The Bomber". Done! Let's just say: The Bomber is a really great sandwich and takes the Italian Beef sandwich to a different level. Now, I'm going to have to come back to try their other items. Anyone who gave this shop less than 5 stars is a soul-less, cold, wired-up robot that needs to be eaten and ground up in a spam filter. And they are jealous competition because Spiro's is the undeniable champion of the sangwich. Then I-talian sub was where I began my fantasmal relationship with the Spiro's sangwich. 9" on sesame bread, freshly-baked and a little crisp on the bite with a soft and delicious inner-bread, with everything on it. The meats were on point, the cheese was fresh and delicious and pronounced in every bite, all of it topped off with oil&vinegar which were balanced perfectly. On my first visit I was enticed by the allure of the Alpine Burger, with it's mushrooms and swiss cheese and grilled onions, but I remained faithful to the I-talian. But the second visit I heeded the siren's song and ordered the Alpine. Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. The menu board says 1/3lb burgers, but the thing was the size of 2 fists and the flavor's hit me as such! French fries were fresh cut and crispy, couldn't ask for more. 3's a crowd. Unless you get 3 Bombers from Spiro's then it's infatuation. The bomber lived up to it's name, it's TheBomb.com (Ugh that was weak I know I'm so ashamed) but taking their outstanding I-talian beef sangwich and kicking it up a notch sounds like a recipe for disaster. Nothing could be further from the truth. The mayo on the bread of a hot sangwich may have led to some drippage (on the plate, easy there...) but with melted swiss cheese and veggies accompanying it, on sesame bread?? Outta sight. And of course, the crisp, golden brown, hand-cut French fries. **I'm a sangwich connoisseur, I've had the best sangwiches across the country, Spiro's sangwiches don't shut up they put up. read more

It was served on a slice of French bread with sesame seeds, which I thought added a nice touch. The fries were the fresh cut type and were good. I saw the comments about the credit cards. I absolutely LOVE Spiro's Deli. My boyfriend and I come here pretty often. When we walk in we automatically feel welcomed, as the cook is super friendly and always remembers what we usually order. We get their Bomber sandwich - beef with cheese, onions, pickles and special sauce. It is absolutely delicious! All of their other food items are also very good (like their Reuben sandwich), but I highly recommend getting the Bomber. We also really love their french fries with cheese. read more

Loved the sesame seeds on it and the texture was just right, a bit soggy in the middle but still a nice bite to the bread on the outside of the sandwich. The fries were also money. Home cut style and mine were extremely nice and crispy. Looking forward to coming back for the "poor boy" sammies. Decent place for what it is. Owner greeted me and offered a sample since I had never been in before. Very friendly! This is a family business around for something like 40 years! Bomber was fun and creative. Bun was not fresh, and took away a lot from the flavor. Beef was OK, with nice (not great) flavor, and a little dry. The other fixings on the sandwich worked well, and made the meal. May come back for another sandwich if I'm in the area again. Not going to make a special trip. read more

This is a solid place for what it is - I am much more on board with their cold sandwiches versus the hot ones though - I'll get my Italian beefs and gyros at places that focus more on those kind of meals. Working in Glenview, I've longed for a sandwich place that I could visit multiple times a week and not get tired of. I'm happy to say that I've found it. The poorboys are great - the combo of the "Comeback" sauce mixed with the banana peppers and thinly sliced pickles is truly special. While I'm picky about my chicken salad (like any true chicken salad fan), I can't get enough of Spiro's traditional interpretation. Get it on a poorboy and you'll understand my need to review this place. Also, you can't go wrong with their signature Bomber. I get a small version of this generously-sized Italian beef and I'm full ten out of ten times. Really good stuff.
