In 2014, I anxiously waited for three questions to be answered:
1) Who would the Minnesota Vikings draft to solve their quarterback woes?
2) Would my girlfriend and I adopt a dog?
3) When would we dine at Spoon and Stable?
The answers to my first two questions came last April and August, respectively, but it wasn't until a couple weeks ago the third got answered.
Thanks to a close couple of friends that know my girlfriend and I love to stuff my face with delicious things, they asked us to go out one cold Monday. Ok, let's get down to it:
DÉCOR: The perfectly dim lighting, exposed brick, high ceilings, the gigantic wine cellar, and combos of grays, whites, and blacks, make the space incredibly inviting and romantic. It's conducive to bring that special someone. Whether you want to innocently place your hand on your partner's thigh, or have a PG-13 make-out sesh in one of the booths, it could def. go down there. I wouldn't bring an attractive co-worker or that friend you-have-been-crushin-on, because you would probably go home and hookup with him or her. And if I learned that my girlfriend went out to Spoon & Stable with some dude, we would probably break up. #thejealousyisreal
SERVICE: Like any high-end restaurant, it was incredible. Our server checked in at the appropriate times, gave his honest recommendations, and got my homegirl a huge cloud of cotton candy (even though it wasn't her birthday). Could I have this server every time I visit?
FOOD: Overall, after trying two appetizers, a side, four entrees, and a dessert, I thought everything was very thoughtful and well executed. Yet, I, if I returned, I would only re-order the dessert.
*Bison Tartare: Good flavor, and a little gamey (which I actually like); however, it was a bit too chewy and wasn't well diced enough. I'm not sure if I would recommend this. The socca chips were a nice touch.
*Hamachi: Interesting coconut and grapefruit (maybe?) ingredients, as well as a fried jalapeño (yah?), but overall the ingredients didn't tie very well together. Surprisingly, it was somewhat flavorless.
*Creamy Spinach: Yes! Absolutely delicious! This side sent me back to this mouthwatering soup I used to eat as a shorty. Thank you, S&S. Oh, and cheese curds are usually welcome on any dish. Right?
**Spaghetti Nero: If you love spaghetti, this is a must! I also love the little kick they put in there. I loved the prawns, mussels, and octopus. Not my favorite dish, but something to try if you're a pasta lover. (Unless you're allergic, which I totally understand.)
**Veal Tenderloin: Excellently cooked on the outside. It was a great marriage between the earthy ash grilled leeks and artichoke and hearty veal. I just wished that someone marinated the piece of veal for a bit longer, so each bite would provide more flavor. I think I could do without the polenta.
**Grilled Heritage Pork: The chef cooked this hunk of meat very well, and I loved the mushrooms on top. Like the veal tenderloin, though, the meat also needed to be marinated longer.
**Pot Roast: This meaty goodness broke apart very well and served as the best piece of meat I ate all night. And I would totally take shots of the sauce. (***Dips bread.***)
***Caramelized White Chocolate: If I ever had a chance to meet the pastry chef, I would totally buy her drinks all night, get her autograph, and maybe ask for a selfie coupled with this hashtag: #ithinkyoureamazingyo. (And this is coming from a person that rarely does or wants to do selfies.) While it's not the most decadent, this masterfulness definitely pushed the imaginary boundaries on what I envisioned caramelized white chocolate to be. Also, I appreciated the interesting execution on the carrot and black tea sherbet.
This was a surprise, just like when Lennox Lewis knocked out Mike Tyson.
DRINK: They have an extensive list of classic drinks. Unfortunately, because it was a weekday, I only tried their Old Fashioned. But if it were any consolation, I would down four or five of these. Ugh, so good. Especially, the rum. Or, maybe I just really like rum?
VERDICT: If you haven't dined at Spoon and Stable, yet, it's definitely a must if you love food and live in the Twin Cities. With the food, there were some hits and misses, and for the price, I expected a bit more. The dessert made a very strong impression on me, though.
But, dining out isn't always about the food (although that's a very important, obviously). The drinks will make anyone smile from ear-to-ear and the service rocks. You're likely to have a great time dining out with your group of loved ones.
I'm not in a hurry to return, but plan doing so in the future. read more
