We had a great time here. The decor is so much fun! It's like you've walked inside a newspaper. You also really have to visit the bathroom and check out the mirrors and the newspaper wall decor in there. I won't say more because it will spoil the surprise. They really just went all out with the newspaper theme, table tops, walls, menus, etc. It was surprisingly not crowded for dinner time. The service was quick, the server was friendly and attentive, and our meals were delightful. We got the brie curds and wow, I think these were the most amazing curds I've ever had. I could have just had a pile of them as my meal, but that didn't really seem wise. They come with a blueberry 'ketchup' which was more like a jam but really made the dish! My meal was the mushroom gorgonzola penne which was cooked just right and had piles of mushrooms, and yes, more cheese. This place was a lot of fun. I've been coming here for many years. The food is always good. The last time I was there, only myself and one other person were there. A lady was working the bar. She had a personality of a Styrofoam cup filled with distilled water. She never asked if I wanted anything else when I was done eating (like dessert). There was no conversation or engagement. Walking in was like a throwback in time, the set up inside is that of an old newspaper theme; very cool! I ordered the braised short rib with mashed potatoes and carrots, the beef was extremely tender, seasoned well and it melted in my mouth. The meal was accompanied by a nice amount of flavored gravy that sat on the bed of carrots and mash. That was actually one of the best short ribs of beef I've had in a very long time. This is such a cute restaurant! The entrance is straight into a massive bar with a ship in the center of it, with many lines of alcohol along it. The restaurant is large and can accommodate a variety of parties. A few friends and I popped into The News Room for a few drinks while walking around downtown Minneapolis. The decor inside was what drew us in. There was a mermaid, big sailboat with ropes hanging down, a giant newspaper wall and newspaper roll hanging from the ceiling. I liked all the decor individually by itself, but the seafaring boat/mermaid decor was a little disparate with the newspaper designs. We were there for drinks though, and not only for the decor. They had a lot of different drinks and brews available, but unfortunately not a lot of "lighter" drinks for people who don't like heavy or hoppy beers or hard liquor. I found one beer that seemed lighter (an EPA), but even that was pretty heavy. That may be other's favorite, it just wasn't mine. The staff were great and very knowledgeable, so no complaints there. We didn't try any food, since we were just there for drinks, but the menu looked pretty expensive, so take a look at that if you're wanting to stop in for more than a pint. The News Room is a cute establishment with a sort of indistinct theme and not for the light beer drinkers. I would go back to try it again, as it appears they change the drinks on offer seasonally, so maybe I'll find something I like next time! read more

Service was absolutely horrendous. The server (Stu) was very dismissive, inattentive and down right annoyed. For a Tuesday evening the restaurant was not busy. One of our guest commented "Wow he really doesn't want to be here". We had empty glasses, missing entrees and silverware. I really am saddened that the service disappointed to this extent, because it was our first time and we will never be back. The food was fairly good - our table ordered salads, burgers, pasta and steaks. The atmosphere was fun and unique. I will say, (having worked in the restaurant industry in the past) it is encounters such as this, with "Stu", that make me very frustrated with the automatic %20 tip for groups. After reading the reviews, I didn't know what to expect and was thinking I'd be bummed with the experience. Thankfully, we were pleasantly surprised! The decor is fun, it's like a fever dream of a newspaper themed pirate cove with downtown holiday sparkle. Walking in, there's a news-themed entry, then you see a mermaid reading a newspaper at a pirate ship bar playing sports games on the TVs. It's wild, but it's so fun. We had great seats at a table by the window looking out to downtown, which was great for people watching while we waited for our food. We were also entertained by the football and hockey games on the TVs. Our waitress was swift, but we waited a while for her to come back to cash us out after we ate. I ordered their burger with fries and a Pinot noir on the side. The burger was cooked nicely at medium well. There were several cocktails that sounded great, but a nice burger and dry red was calling to me that night. My husband got the Korean bbq fried chicken sandwich and we split that and the burger halfsies. I liked the chicken sandwich, but not as much as I enjoyed the burger. I don't know why the reviews aren't higher! After dropping off my rental car at Budget, I was looking for a place to have a cocktail. I almost didn't come here because of the reviews but I'm SO glad I did! The restaurant was empty so the host was able to offer me seating options. I chose to sit inside as it was cooler. I had a raspberry mojito, which was sweet and the alcohol didn't overpower the raspberry flavor. For my entree, I had the shrimp tacos and appreciated that they were able to grill rather than deep fry the shrimp. I loved the sweet sauce and would go as far to say they were the best shrimp tacos I had. Waiter was friendly, efficient, and gave me time to review the menu. Prices were reasonable. There are a lot of options on the menu, making it great for large groups because it can accommodate a lot of preferences and dietary restrictions. However, but I thought that the food was pretty mediocre and the service was slow. I ordered the margarita flatbread and was very underwhelmed. It was a bit too crispy and thin - almost like a cracker with some pesto and cheese on top. We had a large group, which may have lead to their service being especially slow. I stopped in during the Winter fest taking place downtown. The news theme is cool but a touch gimmicky haha. They have a ton of seating and a TON of TVs for sports, etc! The menu wasn't anything special, and it was pricey as you'd expect at a place downtown. I had the lasagna, which was tasty! They didn't have any domestics on tap which I thought was interesting. So I waited 10 minutes for my party to arrive just to find out that they had already been seated and ordered their drinks and that they did indeed have a table under their name. Despite that, service was good. The cocktails are mostly all on the sweet side, but they have a good selection of beer in case that's not your thing. I ordered the Cajun salmon pasta and it was so incredibly salty I only ate a third of it! I do love salt but it was too much for me. The only thing worthwhile about this restaurant is the decor. Other than a waste of money with bad food and terrible staff. My party sat down and waited 25 minutes for a waitress to come to the table. And once the waitress Molli came over, and I saw her sour face, I knew what type of service we were in for. Molli didn't say hello and was not pleasant in any way shape or form. the food arrived and was just pretty much fast food trash. No style or substance to the food and you could tell it was most likely frozen and microwaved. And on top of it, the has the nerve to charge you a 2% staff fee, even though their staff isn't worth any fee at all. They're much better restaurants in Minneapolis. Hadn't been here in a while. Stopped by for lunch with some coworkers. They were pretty empty for a Tuesday. We were seated right away and the server came to get our drink orders. The place is clean and was quiet on this day since there were not many people dining. I ordered a fish and chips. The food came out pretty quick and we didn't have to wait too long. There were three pieces of battered fish and plenty of chips for the lunch portions. The batter was fine although could have used a little more seasoning. The fish was fried well. The inside was flaky and moist while the outside had a crisp to it. It was a little more oilier than I like. There was a puddle of oil on the plate which, by the time you got to the last piece, made it a little soggy. Overall a decent meal but not going to be rushing back to this spot while there are so many other options. At 20+ for the fish and chips, it wasn't a cheap lunch but also it's in line with similar offerings at other downtown establishments of this kind.
