First and last time coming here. Walked in wanting to take a look at a hardy mountain bike in the $700 range. Walked downstairs where I saw plenty of employees walking around and just doing their job. 2 other people walked down (white people) and were immidietly asked if they needed help or if they needed anything at all. Me being a brown person was not asked once if I needed helped. I walked for about 10 minutes looking at every single bike in the downstairs area but not one employee asked if I was ok or needed anything. I ended up leaving even though I saw a hando ful of mountain bikes I liked. Will never come back to this racist place again. read more

Needed to rent skis for my son. Checked other reviews and decided to give this place a try. Walked in and was immediately impressed by the overall quantity of gear in the store. The ski rental area was easy to find and employees were attentive and helpful. On this particular weekday, they had a large surplus of rental gear. The boots were almost brand new as were the skis/bindings and poles. We rented bib/jacket/gloves/helmet too. All of it was in great shape! Checkout process was a breeze as well. Highly recommend, instead of dealing with the rental hassle (and high $$$) at the resort(s). Bought a demo bike. Was told it was a "2020". (we bought this Santa Cruz 5010c late 2020) only about $1000 less than new. First thing that went out was the breaks. They told us the bike is as is. Next I contacted Santa Cruz to get new frame bearings (we registered it after purchase). They said the serial number that was given was a 2019. (They told us numerous times it was a 2020). Santa Cruz told me that we did not register the wheels. He said they are under warranty as well. I told him they were RaceFace wheels that came with the bike. He says that's not what they originally came with so they cannot warrantee the wheels. So the original equipment of this demo bike was swapped out We spent 4000 on a bike that probably was worth a lot less. We will not give them our Business again. Really disappointing. read more

We stoped by this store two weeks ago just to see what they have. We end up buying a pair of shoes and few other things all because a great customer service from Pat in shoe Dept. Price was great too. Went back today just to get some info about mountain bikes. David Green (hope I got his name right) went above and beyond my expectations to not only answer all my questions but also measuring and test drive of few bikes. I felt he was just trying to help me which bike is right for me but no sales pressure. I could not help myself to get a new bike. Not only I got a great deal (bike was on sale) but also a great brand of bike (specialized). Thank you David for going above and beyond to help. Customer service like this cannot go unnoticed. I hadn't gotten new workout shoes in 15(?!) years. I have a couple of foot issues and regularly get home with shoes that hurt after an hour and so have to be returned. Amber Z. listened carefully, came up with several options, tended to me when I needed it and left me alone when I needed to wander to check the fit. I came in with my mom, who is nearly 90, to find her some shoes that don't hurt her feet. This is an unusual quest for a sporting goods store! I was afraid that they would give us a hard time or not help much, given that we weren't hard-core athletes. Quite the opposite of my fears, the staff went above and beyond our hopes. We were helped by Likhaya, and he was so much more than professional and courteous! He was friendly and knowledgeable. He asked what we were shopping for and showed us options - and then brought at least a half dozen pairs of those and similar shoes for her to try. He assessed how they worked with her unique feet and adjusted options constantly - he kept bringing out more pairs that he thought would work better. In an instant, he'd gauged what her feet needed, and he found a product that addressed those needs. He didn't rush her or pressure her, he was sensitive about her self-consciousness about how her feet look .... he was lovely. Normally Mom buys shoes and then gets home and they have some issue; this time, all the time Likhaya spent getting the *right* shoe for her paid off. She's worn them and they feel great. This rarely happens! I plan to drive out of my way to get shoes for my family, including two teen boys, from this store, and hopefully Likhaya, in the future. He listened to me and helped me get the exact right, super tight boot fit that I wanted. I first came to Sports Systems a few years back when a friend from out of town registered for a half-marathon and had to pick stuff up. I have been back since moving back to the area for bicycle and snowboard things. I bought a new bike here. The service was great, the employees helpful, and the bike pretty darn nice. They helped me find a good bike for what I like to do and one with a good fit. Also, your get free basic tune ups and install one after a "month" or "5 hours" of ride time then probably once a year, but I don't remember for sure). (I took my bike in for the initial tune up about two months after buying it our at least 30 hours of ride time). No appointment was needed, and it took about 10 minutes I also brought my snowboard I for a preseason tune up, sharpen edges, wax etc. It was reasonably priced and comprehensive. I could but a new board, but my old board is in good condition after not being used most seasons. I was told they have a trade in thing, and maybe eventually, I'll look at new technology. When I do, I'll come back to Sports Systems. read more

On two separate occasions I encountered customer service that was less than positive.

Took my 25 year old Gary Fisher mountain bike for a tune up. I fully expected to spend $300 to $400 or more for new everything top to bottom. Service Specialist Ross Bomber ( yup - that's really his last name ) loved checking out my 'antique' bike and pointed out a number items that DIDN'T need repair or replacement. I left the bike in Ross' capable hands and today got it back. It looks and rides spectacular and I couldn't be happier with the work Ross did on it. And oh yea : for a fraction of what I figured I'd have to pay. These guys have a new customer - you should check them out!!! read more

Likhaya greeted us at the door and smiled throughout. I told him my wife and I are novice runners. He had us stand and determined our stance, then had us run on the treadmill. After analyzing our stride, and stance he recommended 4 to 5 shoes each, none of which I would have picked. They were the most comfortable shoes ever, his measurements were perfect and he and Pat his co-worker made my wife and I feel special and like true runners even though we are not. Likhaya and Pat are 100% the real deal, and they work hard to make the customers happy while educating them about running along the way. We went to Heart & Sole trying to find the same experience and were highly disappointed. If you're new or old to running go see Likhaya and Pat at Sport Systems in Albuquerque!!!!!!! After that, I was passed on to Rico to have my boots mounted on my old skis and he was terrific as well. The final fellow to deal with me was a guy from South Africa who was also super. Your experience here is dictated by which employees end up helping you. Some are consistently great and rank among the best in the city in terms of knowledge and willingness to help. Unfortunately, I've had just as many experiences where employees have been standoffish, sarcastic, or downright unqualified. For instance, several years ago a temporary hire fitted me with the wrong ski boots, which was a 400 dollar mistake. I've since had to have them adjusted and reformed eight times. For some reason, I've also had the bike repair department throw out screws and spacers that I supplied and expected to have returned. On another occasion a bike mechanic insisted it was my fault that a part they ordered did not fit. He then became impolite and visibly annoyed with my questions, saying I shouldn't have even bothered trying the repair myself if I wanted it done right in the first place. I then took it to another shop where the mechanic took a cursory glance, agreed that it didn't fit, and then made some modifications to get it working in less than five minutes with no questions asked. Your experience may vary, but the service here is generally hit or miss. read more

Kayleigh in skis is great!!! We have bought several things from sport systems over the years and have always gotten a more than fair deal IMHO. I met Kayleigh last year when I bought ski boots. She was extremely knowledgable and brought out several different boots. In the end I bought a pair based on her recommendation and they're great. I would not have tried that particular boot without her recommendation. I've been skiing forty + years and they're the best pair I'e ever owned. This year I took my wife to meet with Kayleigh to get her set up with new skis. After getting to know the type of skier my wife was Kayleigh had recommendations. She could've easily sold my wife a pair of fairly expensive skis but her favorite ski for her was actually the lowest price ski in the few she recommended. Owner has gotten greedy sadly. Wanted to buy a 6000 dollar bike while Specialized was doing 20% off for Labor Day. Im currently closing on a house so didn't have immediate cash flow but said I could pay for it in a week or two if they could hold it. I even offered to give a non refundable deposit to make sure they are protected. Was told they don't hold bikes for anyone anymore even though the bike has been sitting for months on the floor. You would think they would be willing to work with you to get a bike sold thats been sitting for a long time. It's sad when greed gets the best of people but that's what money does. read more

Billy helped me decide on ski boots that really fit my feet and helped make sure that my setup would not be hindered by my plantar faciatis. Rob was very knowledgable and helped me decide on new skis after my old ones would be just as expensive to update. I've known about Sport Systems for a long time but never really had much reason to go there rather than somewhere else. Short version: At this point, I'd say they're the best sports shop in all of Albuquerque overall. The service they've given me on a few visits recently impressed me so much that they'll always be my first choice in the foreseeable future! They had exactly the gear I was looking for at a fair price and their service went above and beyond what I expected - by far. David Goering in the ski service shop and Elisa in bike sales each made my day - on different days! They also made me a new loyal and happy customer. ================= Longer detailed version: I'm a very active person (hiking, cycling, skiing, hockey, basketball, soccer, baseball, swimming, baseball, tennis, gym, motorcycling, etc.) and recently decided to buy some ski gear. Most of my local friends and coworkers who are into snow sports all agreed (separately) that Sport Systems was the place to go because they knew the most and they treat you best. I have more options than many people since I have access to Kirtland Air Force Base's Outdoor Recreation, etc. as well. I went in to Sport Systems, found my gear, went over a few things with their ski experts to make sure I was getting the right stuff for me, and felt good. Then the ski expert took the boots I was about to buy in the back and made a quick improvement for me. I was already starting to be impressed. I bought everything and dropped it off at the ski service shop to have it set up for free (included with price). After I left the shop a friend offered me his whole set of gear if I wanted it. I checked it out and it all fit perfect, so I called Sport Systems that same night saying I wasn't going to need what I just bought from them. I explained that since I had just dropped all my gear off at the ski service shop to get set up they could pull it from the queue and not bother doing any work on it after all. The guy I talked to (David Goering - as I found out later) understood and said he'd take care of it. I still had my receipt and figured I'd go in over the next few days to take care of the refund. The next day I got a voice mail from David saying he talked to the manager and took care of everything and I should see the refund on my credit card soon. I was kind of stunned, because I didn't expect that at all. I hadn't asked him to do that but he took it upon himself to make my experience an easy and positive one - and he wasn't even involved with the sale of the stuff I bought. I still had my whole set of ski gear my friend had given me that needed set-up for me and I wanted to have the skis hand-waxed, so I brought it in to have Ski Systems do it. As I dropped it off I mentioned I was impressed with and thankful for the service I'd gotten and David introduced himself to me as the one who took care of everything. I also talked to his manager to relay my positive experience. On my way out I decided to go downstairs to look at road bikes - which I'd been lazily shopping for for ~6 months (looking for an uncommon bike in an uncommon size). They didn't have exactly what I was looking for out in their display but when their product specialist, Elisa checked on me and found out what I was looking for she said she thought they had it in the back. Sure enough - it was exactly what I was looking for (the uncommon bike) in my size (the uncommon size). The price was right, too - crazy! We discussed a few things so that I could make sure it really was what I was looking for. I decided to buy it right then & there. So I walked in to get my ski gear set up (that I didn't buy from them) and tell them I appreciated them. I ended up walking out with a new bike and another great experience! I was disappointed with the customer service I received at Sports Systems today. We purchased a pair of snowboarding pants yesterday and decided to return them today. They were on sale but we were not informed that if we returned them it would only be for store credit. This is printed on the receipt, however since you only receive a receipt after purchase this is not helpful. The sales clerk today was also not helpful or sympathetic. read more

My review is solely based on the cycling department. I dealt with many staff members over the last few days trying to find the perfect bike for my intended use. To start I was greeted in a very friendly fashion by Kelsie. She was very attentive and did her best to help. She informed me she was new and if I had any questions above her knowledge she would get someone to assist her. As the case she got a guy named Darwin to help us. He was just as friendly but with a plethora of knowledge. I originally was looking at Specialized bikes but was quickly drawn to some other brands. They carry Santa Cruz, Specialized, Yeti and Kona which is what I ended up purchasing. Darwin educated me on the prices and what you get for the money. MTB " mountain bikes" range now days from the $450-$15k. I originally went in with wanting to spend on the low side of $450-550. After being educated on parts and what my intended use was I ended up spending 700 on a bike that I won't out grow and is highly upgradable. If you purchase a bike it comes with life time service! The prices here are fair and come with great customer service. I spent two days touring Abq looking for bikes and chose Sport System mostly based on how I was treated! A read-up of the current reviews on this place essentially issue the following points: - Great merchandise - Merchandise you can find anywhere - Great customer service - Terrible customer service Years back I came in here when I was considering some of those foot skins with toes, which is a purchase most Burqueños contemplate at one point or another, because only in the Land of Enchantment can one legitimately enter the opera wearing shorts, a t-shirt and plastic footwear. So I figured I'd check 'em out and I thought the customer service was great. I've visited to register for the Duke City marathon, again, great service. But that's about all I know on that front. From a merchandise standpoint, I'm definitely blown away. The snowboard and ski selection is bar-none best in the city, and the entire bottom floor is dedicated to bikes, a year-round activity here. And in my limited experience, the staff are experts (I had no problem getting their attention, but then, you know who I work for). They explained technical aspects about the equipment I was looking at and they made me feel comfortable about a purchase. Overall, I'd simply state that you should plan to be living on 505 time, here. You'll be spending some time, because you're going to be dropping a dime and you should be very comfortable with that purchase. I had ordered a pair of skis that turned out to be out of stock, but rather than stiff me or ask me to shell out more, they subbed a pair of newer skis at the same price without any prompting.
