I walked into the rental shop, and in less than 5 seconds, I was greeted and helped by a nice guy who ushered me to the rental counter. And the rest of the rental process went very smooth, too. This place had the worst service that I have ever had. My dad and I went in to buy boots and bindings and we didn't get any help. Not a single employee asked if we were doing okay. One employee just sat there talking to a girl and another guy was pricing items, neither of them even asked how our day was or even looked at us. Lost out on about $1,500. read more

I took my bicycle in because it appeared to have a seized bolt and this place is well known locally. They weren't able to get the bolt out, put a gigantic gash into the carbon fiber and returned the bike to me covered in grease and some kind of solvent with a "we weren't able to get it out so we could cut it off for you." Pretty sure seeing the condition of the bike after this attempt: no thanks. Didn't even bother cleaning it up or apologizing for the damage. A place that treats others' property like it's garbage doesn't deserve your business. Thankfully, plenty of other bike shops in town that will probably give better service without destroying my bike in the process. read more

Policies are extremely misleading. Wall signs states, "We beat internet deals - 100% of the time! Even if you find it for $1.00" When asking Josh, the shop manager for the bike shop for a price match, he stated that he would not honor the price of the internet website and handled the situation poorly. If you're going to honor your word, take the signs down. Needless to say, I will be shopping elsewhere until the shops honesty and integrity changes. read more

The kids (10 & 14) were getting ski equipment for Christmas and we stopped in to a very busy store. We were greeted kindly and by the end of the process, Billy had won us over completely. Our 10 yr old was stubborn but Billy found ways to make it work. We ended up with boots, skis and poles for both kids and I feel like we made a buddy too. He was professional, knowledgeable, patient, and warned our trust. If Billy made a recommendation we knew we could trust him. We only visit NM once a year, but this would be the place to go for all our gear needs. read more

#ABQ has lots of great Local Bike Shops and I've had the opportunity to get acquainted with a great many of them. Among my favorites is Sport Systems. I like Sport Systems for two reasons; 1) the staff in their shop are top-notch, always working to solve my issues without taking any more of my money than necessary. Recently I'd ordered a wheel to be delivered in a few days and was out the door when they called to say they found a wheel in-house - and for $20 less! Plus, when I took them my Copenhagen Wheel to mount they were so enthused they did the install at a very reasonable price because "they were learning, too." (The Wheel has had NO install issues and is a blast for my commuting, errands, and the like.) The other reason I like Sport Systems is they work hard to reward me for my #BuyLocal instincts. They guarantee they can offer the better value than the internet. When folks come in to try on their equipment (biking, hiking, skiing - if it's a people powered sport Sport Systems has it) and then shop it online Sport Systems is right there to make sure the customer gets the best value IN THEIR STORE NOT ONLINE. If that means free tunes for life - oh, yeah, I think it does. If it means lift tix with your ski purchase - oh, yeah, I think it does. Generously timed Winter Gear rental from a local business? Check. Help selecting running shoes, insoles, etc.? Check. Sponsorship of local races and events? Check. Friendly, personalized help? Check. Competitive price-matching against the Big Bad Interwebs? Check! Cutest Shop Dogs EVER?! Check!!! We've rented snow gear here, purchased from their Used Gear Sale, bought Running/Hiking/Snow shoes, insoles and other accessories, registered for races and chatted with their community partners at packet pickups, and even splurged on a bike tune-up. So we've pretty much covered the whole dang store, and my husband is IN LOVE with the dogs who have the run of the place. Yes, they can be a bit pricey on gear and clothing (I usually look/wait for sales for that stuff), but I would much rather spend my money here than some soulless corporate store. I've found that chatting up the employees, and asking questions, helps improve service overall, and who DOESN'T have at least something new to learn about their favorite sport(s)? Plus, they are SUPER generous with the whole 24-hour rental thing; it's more like 36 to 48 if you time it right. As someone who is rarely, if ever, on time (thank goodness the library eliminated late fees!!) that's the kind of laid-back approach I can appreciate. read more

My Dad recently moved here and I recommended he go to Sports Systems for a bike tire repair. Today he waited outside in a line to get his bike looked at. The man working there was busy talking to the person in line in front of my Dad for over 20 minutes. He never once asked what my Dad needed. Then another "friend" of the worker shows up and the worker pulls him to the front of the line and starts working with him. My Dad decided he'd go inside. Unfortunately, the experience was the same. In fact, the guy inside said they were too busy and to maybe check back in two weeks or so. Two weeks to get a flat tire repaired? Needless to say, my Dad won't be returning to Sports Systems again. Most likely, neither will the rest of my family. It's a shame because we like to support the local shops and we typical spend several thousand dollars a year at Sports Systems. I took my 15 year old to look into getting his first trail bike. We heard about their sale and grand opening so we were looking toward to it. We got there at 3pm and it was not very busy. After 10 minutes and watching our 3rd associate walk by without saying a word, I asked for help. I explained to the salesperson that this is a first bike. He shows me a $1,000 bike...then looses interest and wanders away when we start looking at something on the lower end ($500). We had to stop another sales person to request a test ride. Terrible customer service. We will not be back. read more

Great shop! I lease my two kids skis here every season. Great program with a solid selection of gear for the little ones. The shop matches all online sales (in store credit typically). I have gotten plenty of loft tix to places in CO and at Taos. Staff is helpful and if your in a pinch to have a tune or wax - they are usually all over it. read more

These are the most helpful and courteous workers! Everyone is busy trying to make everyone happy. I wanted to take up skiing because everyone is very nice and helpful. They have a tremendous variety of items available from all the big names in sports. I only know about the ski and snowboard section because that is what my family is into. I was over whelmed with the selection and when we looked kind of lost we had two people there to answer questions and get us pointed in the right direction. One person in my group was looking for snowboard boots, but being a college student did not want to spend too much. He tried some new boots on, because he had picked them out before the sales person came to help. He told the sales person how the boot felt and the guy immediately stated that the boot was not the right one for him. Even though it was a high dollar boot! While the two discussed what he wanted, his skill level, where he would be boarding, and the huge fact that he is a poor college student, the salesperson brought over a rental boot in his correct size and told him all about it. Also helped him learn how to put the boot on and work it. He made a sale! My friend walked out with a pair of boarding boots that he really liked and felt comfortable for what it would cost him to rent for 2 days! Exceptional quality and a great price. Thank you Dillon for helping!!! Next up with DH. He had not bought new boots in years. The Avalanche sale was too good to pass up. Since DH has been skiing for ever he thought he knew what size he was and what was best for him. NOPE he did not. Again a very attentive staff member came over to see how he could help. He sized Dh correctly and then brought over several different brands of boots. I thought this was going to take forever because DH always takes forever picking out footwear. To my surprise the salesperson picked out the best boots for DH tastes and needs. The boots were all at different price ranges and brands. DH finally decided on the salesperson personal recommendation and off we went! Check out was a breeze as well. Very efficient and friendly. We got free lift tickets as well! The gentleman I made my first purchase with has since moved on, but Dave Ortiz was more than professional, and helpful setting up my new bike. Sale going on, so a lot was going in. He took the time to set me up the way I wanted. Fair trade value for my old Roubaix, and consideration on the accessories I added on. Picking up the bike when it was ready was a good experience as well. Dave was off, but the bike shop manager made sure that the machine was ride ready, and took time again to make sure I was happy. I can't even begin to lay enough compliments on this place. I went in just to look around and ask a few questions. I ended up test riding what would become my new mountain bike. They found a bike in my price range, loaded with essential high end accessories, fitted it to me, showed me how to maintain it and made sure I knew that it was cool to bring it back for any adjustments or tune ups. I received a great deal on a great bike by a solid 'avid biking' sales staff. These guys know bikes! read more

I have purchased bicycles, skis, shoes and innumerable clothes and accessories from Sport Systems. Any time I've needed help or to deal with exchanges or returns, they have been more than accommodating. I've not been as excited about the Avalanche sales the past few years but that is only one weekend a year. While their prices may not always be the best, service and policies more than make up for this. I not only want to support local businesses when I can, there is real value in the customer experience. When I had an issue with the service done on my skis and asked to speak to someone about it the staff yelled at me and threatened to damage my skis so I didn't have to pay. I was so shocked and upset I paid, and left and vowed to never EVER go back. There are smaller independent shops that need support. Buy on the internet, or go to REI or just support a place that is not obnoxious and threatening. They have lost my support for life. We drove in from out of town to have some work done on a bike. We dropped the bike off and were told the work would take about 30 minutes, but to allow 2 hours, and that they would call when it was ready. Four hours later, we had not heard anything. We went back to the store and they hadn't started on it yet. They shrugged it off with "we got busy", and while they weren't rude about it they didn't even offer an apology. read more

I rented skis for my 8, 12, and 13 year olds to go skiing this weekend. We waited in line for about a half hour and were then told to sit down on the square bench if you could find a spot. After my kids were passed up for other people coming later I stepped in an got someone. When the kids finally got to try on the boots and told the guy that they were to small and that they hurt he said that was the right size and would not get a different pair. Needless to say when we got on the mountain the kids had to cut the day short because the couldn't deal with the pain any longer. Also, my 8 year olds instructor said that he did great but that the boot kept popping out of the binding but that for legal reasons they could not make the necessary adjustments. Overall it was a terrible let me take your money and get you out the door experience with zero quality control. read more

Rent from these guys! My two boys and I went here after getting the shaft from REi (xcountry ski equipment). We decided to rent down hill skis as well and could not have been more pleased. The young staff was exceptionally helpful and free of the "attitude" that typically permeates sport shops in town. The staff chatted up my young boys and made us feel comfortable enough that we were not intimidated to ask questions. I noticed that people behind us in line were quickly acknowledge and attended to as well. The rental cost was reasonable and the equipment was of good quality. I can only hope that the rest of the staff (read: bike shop, which I typically avoid all around town like the plague) has the same patient customer service. It was so refreshing not to get the "gear head" treatment. Also, this shop has the absolute best clothing sales rack in town for outdoor wear! read more

I went to Sport Systems looking for a "cheap" cadence computer and the "salesman" pointed me to a $99 offering and said I wouldn't find anything cheaper than that. I told him I found one online a lot cheaper and he scoffed at me and said where? I told him I thought it was an off brand on Amazon and then acted like I was a pariah. (I should have told him that I just came from Performance Bicycle and found one for less than 1/2 of his product) His arrogance was surpassed only by his ignorance - he should not be allowed to talk with customers. I have shopped here many times over the years starting back when it was Ski Systems on Juan Tabo. I have always had consistently good service here. Tonight I went in shopping for hiking boots. It was a Friday night in the middle of a big winter storm cycle. The store was very busy mostly with skiers and snowboarders, yet a clerk named Alex happily helped me with making a selection. He was very knowledgeable of the product line and very helpful and attentive, in spite of the store being so busy. This is the kind of service I routinely experience here. I will be back again and again, and clerks like the one named Alex are a big part of the reason I shop here. Over the years I have had other very helpful staff help me as well. read more

My wife brought our bikes in for tune ups, new tubes, and slime. Somehow they tear the bead on a tire (it was NEW and ridden on only a few times) and tell my wife she'll have to buy a new one. But they don't have the nobbie in stock, so they tell her it's ok to put a slick (which they had in stock). "It's safe to ride" they tell her. So we pick up a bike with mismatched tires and pay the $220 frickin dollars for crap service and decide we're never going back there. I buy a matching slick and put it on myself. Today we want to go for a ride. Her tires are a little low, so I go to fill them up. The rear tire won't take air. I check it out. The stem is old, discolored, and dinged up so the pump won't attach correctly. THEY NEVER REPLACED THE GODDAM TUBE. Its the old one. Maybe they put new slime in it, but it's without a doubt an old tube. Avoid this lousy shop and the techs that don't seem to give a shit. read more

I purchased a Specialized Diverge A1 today from Sports Systems. I worked with a woman named Kelly. She did an excellent job of helping me out, she was very polite and knowledgeable. If she didn't know the answer she would ask for information and rely on her teammates to make sure I was getting all my questions answered correctly. She really made the whole buying experience a pleasure. Not once did she have an ego or make me feel bad for not knowing something. What a great experience and I am very happy with my new purchase. I went to Sport Systems Albuquerque, with my son's broken hub on his back tire. We purchased a Tallboy from them about 8 months ago. I walked into the bike shop and was greeted by Stephen. He asked if he could help me with anything. I showed him the tire, he said "If you have a few minutes I can fix this right now." I was surprised how nice, friendly, and knowledgeable he was. I was also suprised at how polite the other staff in the bike shop was. I have been in other bike shops to buy: tubes, jerseys, and other bike related items for my son and have always felt ignored and out of place. When I would ask for help at other bike shops, I always felt that I was bothering them in some way or another. Sport Systems really changed the way I view bike shops completly. I will never go anywhere else and I am happy to say I will always give them my busniess. Good job Sport Systems!!!! You have brought customer service back like it use to be. read more

Specifically to the bike shop: I walked in after selling my niner air 9 with a enough cash to buy a yeti burning a hole in my pocket and i had to try to get them to take my money and i still couldnt buy the bike for no other reason than i couldnt get adequate help. The only reason they get two stars is when i go up stairs i get mobbed with help and wind up getting all kinds of cool stuff. It still isn't enough to redeem that lonely bike basement. read more

I have been through sport systems several times and I have had mixed experiences, mostly on the bad side of the spectrum. This review is about the snowboarding dept and the bike dept. Snowboarding department: You guys have served us well in the winter season. Had someone spend a solid amount of time with me and my girlfriend with finding a good fit on new snowboard boots and other equipment. Went back last week (April) and it was pretty much dead...not unexpected since the season ended. A staff member did come by and ask if we needed anything, which was good. Prices are average during the season and a good selection of boards and clothes are available. However, the real reason for this review is for the bike dept. Brought the girlfriend here to look at mountain bikes last weekend. In the women's section, we received great customer service - helped immediately, answered all our questions, offered us a test ride and some good advice. Solid! In the men's bike section - crickets. Staff members kept entirely to themselves in small cliques and did not make eye contact. Wandered around that section for about 15 min looking at bikes and never once got helped. The staff down there just walked by without saying a word, obviously on a mission to do something more important like gossip with their fellow co-workers. Consistent experience with every time I've been down in this department. Completely second Nick N's comment about how they have a "better than you" complex - which is very unfortunate since Sport Systems has a great selection of bikes and they could do a lot to grow the sport with some customer-focused staff. The prices are average with some items on sale. However the prices are not superb enough to overcome the lack of customer service in that department. Where I'm from the local bike shops offer exceptional service...it's the only way they can stay in business and compete with the larger retailers and online retailers. I'm all for supporting local bike shops but this one should just liquidate their inventory and give them to more deserving stores in the area.
