I just love Spot Coffees because they're all so different and fun. This particular one has a barista who likes to forget drinks and pretend he knew all along while he just happens to make 7-8 more complicated drinks in the meantime... but it's fine. Lots of seating, lots of good reading material on the cork board, AWFUL unclean bathroom at this location though. Awesome to just be able to sit on a sidewalk, have a cup of coffee, a snack, and enjoy the passers-by folk. The decor inside is pretty cool. Eclectic and funky. Those who use labels would consider this place 'hipster'. I just call it awesome. I was in Buffalo for roughly 30 hours...and made my way to TWO Spot Coffee locations, this being one of them. Of the two, this was my favorite...by a sliver. Elmwood Village, as I'm sure is no surprise to the locals, is pretty rad. The vibe is great. The staff was on point at each of my 3-4 orders. Each of them even complimenting me on different aspects. "Lovely scarf, is it an infinity?" and "Wow, that nail color is beautiful." I mean, are these people serious? I LOVE BUFFALO. It made me miss my Midwestern people. So kind and sweet, smiling and helpful. The staff at Spot seems to radiate. I took up residence (which not only seems OK, but encouraged) for several hours in a quiet corner to do some work and meet with a few folks. IN this time I enjoyed a lovely hot cup of house coffee, a few iterations of hot Rishi loose leaf teas (The Morrocan Mint and Jasmine Cloud, both healing me from the inside out), and for lunch a hummus wrap with side salad on a whole wheat tortilla. Their lunch options are quite extensive, and the "Spot Cofee" is almost misleading. This is a full-fledged cafe where I come from, so a stop in for lunch (soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, baked goods) is certainly appropriate. Plenty of outlets, an entire assortment of vintage furniture in the far back corner (btw the flowered victorian sette, to die for), sturdy tables/chairs til the cows come home, tons of natural light, patio seating weather permitting, clean restrooms with barbies and kens marking the doors. I mean, really...I can find no fault. The coffee shop is huge, and as I learned actually expanded from the corner spot into the record store next door. One discovery: While they do make their own chai at the DT location, the Elmwood location uses a mix. It's usually not here nor there, but worth a mention. I assume the Elmwood outpost is pretty high traffic and thus, a mix scales a bit better. *accept credit cards. *open fairly late, check hours. read more

Ordered a medium latte and an avocado toast for here, only to find out they were out of avocados, the cashier offered to get me something else at no extra charge which was very nice, so I decided on the breakfast wrap. When the worker called out a breakfast wrap I went up to get my order, I was never asked if I wanted it to go or for here so when it came out in a to go box I just grabbed it. While starting to eat I heard my name announced for a breakfast wrap, I went up to the counter to explain the mistake of me taking the to go one and the worker made a very rude comment "well did you order it to go?" Over all mediocre experience, one staff member was not very nice which lessened the overall experience. read more

Sigh... Spot seems to be the go-to coffee place in Buffalo. It has lots of room to perch, free wifi, and passable 2nd gen coffee. But it could be sooooo much better... Advice: 1. Do pour-over coffees. 2. Offer a cappuccino in a 8 or 10 oz cup to get classic portions. 3. Retrain staff. There are many nice, cool, friendly baristas here, but I haven't received a properly timed shot out of the machine yet. They all run too fast, and there's a ton of volume because no one is watching what they're doing. This means the shots are coming out under-extracted, and this gives the coffee a kind of cat-pee acidity. Also, I'm not seeing that much-advertised latte-art, which would be easy to do every single time. 4. The place is large and echoey, which means the baristas (who often bored, or tired, or restless, or just having fun) start shouting at one another, which is really off-putting if you're reading, say, Heidegger, at a table and suddenly some tattooed, snickering doofus behind the bar is trying to best someone else to see who can yell "PENIS!" the loudest. 5. You know, I kind of agree with all the negative things other people have said in their reviews. And yet I still give it 5 stars! Why, you ask? Well, I think the sometimes noisy atmosphere, occasional burnt bagel, sometimes mediocre espresso drink are what I actually expect when I come here. Despite all this, I still walk in with a smile on my face and most everyone else I see walk in does too. There are always all colors, shapes, and sizes of people there. There are all kinds of places to sit from church pews to old sofas to granpa chairs. The people who work there always appear to be enjoying themselves and their good mood is contagious. If you're looking to read quietly by yourself, meditate and find your inner peace, or write poems about the serenity of nature, then this is not the place to go. It is quite loud and I LOVE that about it. I hope this doesn't change. There's plenty of other coffee places down the street where I do my meditation/poetry activities. The food is good. The desserts are wonderful. And the chai latte I had there was amAzing! When my friends come in town to visit, this is where I take them and alas, finally, what I love about it is that my fond memories there are growing in number. This location is hipsterville. I walked in thinking I'd love it because I love the other location, where the staff is friendly, the food is good and the atmosphere is pleasant. My excitement was dashed as soon as I had to interact with the guy that took my order. This place seems to be Snobby Hipster HQ, where everyone is Too Cool for you and the staff is annoyed because they have to deign to speak to you. They're the sort of alternative people that I loathe (full disclosure: I'm alternative): they seem to think listening to punk music and having coloured hair and tattoos makes them Cooler Than Thou. Unfriendly atmosphere. Food and prices were decent as usual but good lord! If there's one thing I can't stand it's a snob. If you're looking for some quality people watching, this is the place to do it. The atmosphere is fun and always a bit loud, so studying can be hard at this location, but try the one on Delaware and Chippewa. The drinks are delicious and always modifiable, so anything goes! Try a triple shot espresso Cocomoco for that extra kick! The employees work hard and have fun doing it, the service is usually excellent. OK. Spot Coffee. Each one is a little different. Elmwood Spot has fast service & is usually pretty busy. I often order tea - they have rishi teas. My fav is mint. The chai is a concentrated mix. For some reason, I have never been a fan of their coffee. I admit I am picky with my coffee. Their's tastes burnt to me, no matter which one I try. For food, my go to is the quesadilla. They make a special each day. Last couple of times have been iterations of white beans, cheese, hot sauce & chicken. Available on white or wheat and grilled perfectly. They come with a choice of chips or salad - but don't be fooled. They do not have tortilla chips and will totally serve you a quesadilla with potato chips if that's what you ask for. I know from experience. The salad greens are coated in plenty of balsamic - a much better choice than the chips. I've had a few of the pizzas. Anytime there is a mushroom option, I try it. I like their chicken pizzas too. The crust is thin and bubbly, they add a decent amount of toppings and cheese, and the size is plenty big for one person. I usually have a couple slices left over. Good to share with a friend, if you just wanted a snack. There are lots of sweets in the case to choose from. If they have a cinnamon bun, ask for it warmed up. They toast it so the frosting gets melty. Perfect. Breakfast option notes: MIke's sandwich is a standard breakfast with a bonus: cream cheese gives it a punch of gooey yum. The breakfast burrito is huge and usually drippy, but in a good way. Find a seat after you order - they literally scream your name. There is no way you will miss your food coming out. People really set up camp at this location, but I never seem to have a problem finding a spot to do the same. The front stools are super awesome for Elmwood people watching & the patio is great in the summer. Spot is also a great place to find out what is going in around the neighborhood. They have a huge cork board in back for posters & I always find out about fun shows by staring at them. read more

This is a fine place for coffee and a snack or meeting. Pros: The space is huge and bright. Gathering with a number of friends and coworkers is easy. In the summer, the patio is very nice. Drip coffee is good. Cons: The food is overpriced for what it is. Sandwiches are ok in terms of fillings, but every sandwich I've had has been mostly bread. (Disclaimer: Vegetarian here, so I haven't had their meat sandwiches.) The pizzas can be good, but more often than not when I come in for pizza, they are out of crust. The hummus wrap is good. The internet is spotty. If you really need internet, go to Panera next door. read more

This place is pretty awesome. The baristas here are very playful and dish out some great coffee. I have to admit though, I'm not much of a coffee drinker - 1 cup will juice me up for about 3 weeks. Yup, I'm that guy. So why would I come here?? Well, they happen to make an amazing breakfast sandwich- the Mike Sandwich. Awesome. It's a caloric giant that will rid you of any hangover and give a sense of undeserved well-being. I always get mine on a croissant with ham. I'm kicking myself for my previous reviews of Spot. They have really stepped their game up in recent months. I used to go in and get a cup of stale coffee and a hard muffin. I swore I would never go back. A friend of mine dragged me kicking and screaming in last week and I have to say I've changed my tune. The coffee was fresh, hot, and strong. I got a yogurt and granola parfay and it was excellent. I still don't love how crowded it is but it's a good place to get a cup of coffee and catch up with friends. I would recommend it. read more

I came back to Spot a few times while back in Buffalo a few months back, at the end of last year. The service has gotten less efficient. It still takes forever and a day to get a simple cup of coffee while the staff no longer keeps the tabletops quite as clean as they should. The coffee is still the same, OK 2nd wave stuff. If you woulda asked me to write a review a couple years ago my experience and happiness at this place would be higher than most. It was the place to meet someone new, go on a date, or get work done. The Elmwood location now is noisey, crowded and has more of a cafeteria feel then a coffee shop. The workers are all nice and you are going to get a decent cup of coffee , latte or whatever food you order. It just now has become my 3rd or 4th choice place to go to instead of 1st. Don't get me wrong you probably won't leave disappointed by any means, it's just not the coffee shop I recommend anymore. Great (hipster-type) vibe from this SPoT location. One entire wall space is painted with a colorful mural, and it really gives the place so much life. There's couches and tons of table space for studying or chatting with a friend. Limited number of plugs. My only complaint would be about parking. There's only street parking and only limited spaces. Make sure to check if you're allowed to park there! Desserts are always SO VERY delicious. Drinks are little pricier than Starbucks but are well-crafted. Staff is very nice and friendly. The only reason I ever come to the Spot on Elmwood is for the strong coffee, the wifi and the large space available to work. It is certainly not for the food or for the service. The food is inconsistent, the only thing worth ordering is the Mike Sandwich and even that is low quality at times. They forgot the signature ingredient - the cream cheese - one time I ordered. Another time, I asked for spinach and mushrooms on a pizza bagel. They forgot the spinach, and when I brought it up to the barista, she literally took a handful of raw spinach and threw it on top of the already made pizza bagel. It's a joke. Fine whatever, it's a cafe and I'm not expecting perfection. But I am absolutely appalled with the service. NOT ONE PERSON SMILES, let alone is actually pleasant. These people seriously must hate their jobs and their lives. They are not only not nice to me, but come off as rude, like I'm interfering with their day. And this is EVERY single time I'm a patron. I will keep coming here for the strong coffee and the pleasant environment, and the great meeting place to have a conversation. But I think that's all this place is good for. It would just be nice once in a while to be greeted by a barista that when I smile and say hello, they actually do the same instead of stare at me blankly and wait for me to spew out my order. Oh Spot coffee, where would I be without you? Honestly, I don't think I would be a coffee drinker if it wasn't for this place. A few years ago I actually was just an occasional tea drinker and decaf kind of guy, but Spot corrupted me!...maybe in a good way. Favorites: Coffee - not the best in the world, but better than other coffee chains in the area. Chai latte - I can't have a lot of dairy and don't care for soy milk, so I love any cafe/coffee shops with an almond milk option, and the chai latte with almond milk is really tasty and my all time favorite! Jet tea - I like all the flavors, but the peach is my go to jet. Jade cloud green tea - nice full flavor, but beware they pour it HOT! Food - its not like its really bad or anything, I just don't think about eating here. Multi-grain bagels and peanut butter cookies are the only food items I'll snack on. As a social meeting place, Spot is one of the best in town. Free WiFi and plenty of work spaces and relaxing couches make it ideal for anything involving work, school, or play. read more

All locations of Spot (not just this one) have the same problems - atrocious service from impersonal staff members who feel as though you're inconveniencing them when ordering. It's not just me, a lot of people think this. And until they fix this, they'll always be nothing more than a mediocre coffee shop with old Salvation Army furniture. Every cup of coffee I've had from here in the past 2 years has had coffee grounds in it and every sandwich I've eaten have taken 2 weeks to prepare. Compared to some of the coffee I have consumed, Spot is nothing special. However, they are a serious upgrade from the chain coffee places that populate WNY. Service is decent - standard, and baristas are patient (helpful, since the menu is pretty overwhelmingly large) but service takes quite a while. The interior is nice, and there are usually tables open or places to relax with a coffee. Seating has never been an issue, but as other reviewers have said, the wifi is pretty spotty (pun totally intended). People view Spot as being hipster, but as a chain with locations in Buffalo and Williamsville, I see it as a local chain that's a step up from Starbs. I recommend the chaider - chai tea and apple cider. Since trying it for the first time, I've attempted to replicate it at home, with limited success. I used to come here a lot - it was a destination, a place to work, a place to hang out, and all that fun stuff. Now, it's seemingly changed and not for the better, in my opinion. The large space, and it is large, lends itself to a lot of echo and acoustic warfare. It's not a quiet place and won't be. That's not a problem for me when I work, i like the chatter and stuff. But, at various points, there are other issues and groups that make the noise unbearable. Especially when they have live music - I'm out the door immediately. I've noticed a real downward spiral in this location's morale. I think it's partially how busy it is, but the employees don't seem as happy. Maybe this is all caught up with the recent corporation and expansion of Spot - but things aren't as hunky dory anymore. Not that I would say I've experienced bad service - but I can understand why other Yelpers would say that the staff is rude or apathetic. It wasn't always that way. And yeah, one person did mention the lack of clean tables. I actually cannot think of the last time I was in a Spot and someone was cleaning tables. In one sense, that's totally cool - clean up after yourselves, people, jeeze. In the other, it makes me question what tasks they are required to do that keep them from a kind of basic health issue. It's not like i see them waiting around - they always seem busy (unless caught, momentarily, in conversation). This all said, another major reason I don't come here anymore is the internet is consistently terrible. Even if I just need email, I'd rather go to Aroma, Globe Market, or even (ugh) Panera Bread. While I am a big fan of a coffee shop with a kitchen, everything I've ever gotten was average and over-priced. All that being said, Spot (especially THIS Spot!) is a great place to work...my go-to for early morning writing sessions or evening grading (with headphones). Chill crowd, good lighting that doesn't require a flashlight to read, and a nice big open space. I can spread out at a four-seat table and not feel pressured to leave or order something else. Back in 2002 when I visited Buffalo, Starbucks still hadn't forged a deal with Silk for their soy supplies and they were still using the incredible Pacific Vanilla Soy milk for their soy lattes. Making a great soy latte seems to be a big challenge for many coffee shops. Back then, I decided that instead of taking any chances on buying a shitty soy latte, I'd just always go to Starbucks when I was out of town. So I got an awesome contract with Righteous Babe Records, a notoriously anti-corporate outfit, and they flew me out to Buffalo. On the way to their offices from the airport, I asked if we could stop at Starbucks so that I could take advantage of the corporate homogeny that generates my dependably delicious soy latte and mannnnnn did I get reamed. For a good 10 minutes. This sin, my second while I was there, seemed to be many times worse than calling "wings" Buffalo Wings. But I stood my ground until Scot offered to buy my soy latte at Spot. "If it's not better than Starbucks, I'll spend my own money buying you another soy latte." Deal! Needless to say, he didn't have to buy me a second soy latte. Spot has *delicious* soy lattes and really strong coffee. If I ever go back to Buffalo, this will be my first stop. read more

Back home visiting the fam and came to my favorite coffee spot. Or what used to be. The service here is horrible- and by 3 different people. I am so sad because I really loved this place growing up and am utterly disappointed in the service. I asked for an extra hot latte and both my mom's and my coffee were cold. I immediately bring them to the cashier and asked him to microwave our $10 coffees and he did. After rolling his eyes and saying "ow!" While slamming the "hot" coffees on the counter. This is the best coffee in Buffalo (and possibly the world)! A grande House is the perfect pick-me-up cup of Joe. If it's breakfast you crave, you can't go wrong with a Mike's sandwich on a bagel with bacon. For all other occasions, I'm into the spicy tuna wrap, on spinach, in a pretty large way.
