My wife and I take 3-4 trips annually from our home in PA up the northeast coast and begin eating lobster and/or crab rolls about the time we hit Massachusetts and continue up through Boothbay Harbor. Food was very good. I had a delicious crab roll which is a must have for me when visiting Maine. My husband had a fried haddock sandwich and he said it had the best tarter sauce he ever had. We drove to Wiscasset to eat some Lobster rolls at Sprague's on a rainy day. There were 6 of us. We arrived and, being from out of town, weren't sure where to place our order. My husband who is tall enough to see through the high windows asked where to place our order after walking around the stand to find a different window since we hadn't been offered any help. I couldn't visit the over popular one across the street and not give this one a try. I tried them both back to back. Why the other one might be bigger, you can't deny that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Spragues lobster roll. If you do not feel like standing in line for an hour across the street, Spragues will definitely not disappoint. Their roll is still considerably larger than many others. Their bun is nicely toasted and buttery. Their lobster chunks are large. Butter is definitely the way to go in my opinion but mayonnaise is still good. I ordered the lobster roll, my girlfriend ordered the crab roll, and we split an order of fries and the fried mushrooms. Lobster roll was quite good, loaded with tender lobster meat on a split top bun. As of a when we visited the lobster roll was $22.95 and the crab roll was $15.95. 15 minutes into waiting in the long line of reds, we sent my younger sister to fetch a lobster roll from sprague's because 1) we were curious about the comparison and 2) we were hungry. I had actually come to the area originally to try spragues because I saw another yelp review raving about sprague's as the best lobster in Maine over my favorite (bite into Maine in Portland) - but then we got trapped into finding out about reds and gravitated toward the masses of people there. Anyways, my sister returned in probably 10 minutes with a lobster roll in hand while my other sister and I probably moved a foot in the reds line. So, if you're going off of getting your lobster roll the fastest to satisfy cravings, I'd say spragues wins by a landslide. Was it a yummy lobster roll? Yes. Did it taste fresh? Yes. Did it come with as much lobster as reds? No. What was the price difference? About average. Is it better than reds? I'd say no. Spragues won in time to food and its butter roll. But it didn't beat reds in its lobster meat quality and quantity. Will I say Reds was worth the extra hour of a wait? Hmm. I'll leave that up to you and your priorities. read more

The line's shorter but you still gotta wait while they prep your roll. My wife ordered just a plain steamed lobster and of course, got a blueberry soda. The steamed lobster was cooked perfectly. It was fresh, no complaints at all. Here's the thing about the lobster roll here. It is not as stuffed as Red's. But the balance is perfect. The bun here is more buttery than Red's, which adds some much needed flavor to the lightly dressed lobster. They use ever so slightly more mayo to dress their lobster here than at Red's, which also imparts more balanced flavor. Didn't need a fork to eat the thing, just downed it in 4 big bites. Perfect. Beautiful spring day aside, the roll itself was the perfect lobster roll. It's not often that we head out to Boston, and even ore rare that we make the trek up to Maine. There are dozens more lobster rolls to be had and plenty of lobster shacks to visit. But for now, for me, Sprague's takes it as not only the best lobster roll in Wiscasset, but the best in the nation. read more

So we were in line for a 2 hour wait at Red's and my husband and dad were not having it. They checked out Sprague's and we made the switch. Good thing as I saw someone we were waiting behind still in line as we left Sprague's after eating our food. I wasn't feeling great so I just had bites of the lobster roll. It is a lightly mayo'd lobster - no butter. They have butter for corn and would do better to give you the option. It was $22 to Red's $25 and a big roll. We started with mozzarella sticks, clam cakes, crab cakes, chowder, and clam fritters. The fritters were horrible - very fishy and not good. My husband loved them. The chowder was good with big clams in it. Clam cakes and crab cakes were flat patties - never seen that before but good. Frappes were awesome to end the meal and were blended smooth. It's beyond comprehension why people would stand for over an hour someplace close by and get an inferior lobster and then sit smack dab next to the road. I guess people like torture. It is really a shame that more people don't head over to Sprague's. We actually ate at both places for lunch in October, 2009. At Sprague's, we got the twin lobster dinner - for lunch!! We were totally in love with their lobsters- it was our first time tasting lobster boiled in sea water, and we were amazed at the difference. The lobster takes on a whole different range of flavor! The lobsters were served with drawn butter, and service was friendly and quick. In fact, the owner was really friendly and answered our questions about cooking lobster. Wife and I got a roll from the more popular place across the street and this one to compare. This roll was good compared to all of ours on the trip as well as the one across the street. Not the best one on the trip but neither was the place across the street. Served with mayo and my wife prefers Connecticut style with butter but it was as good as the close by competitor and $5 less.
