We had a pretty good lunch today at the Spread Eagle Inn. It's an attractive building, if you're into quaint. The menu is American, as you would expect given the name of the place. Service was kind of laid back, but if you were in a hurry you'd call it slow. The food, clam chowder and a Reuben with chips, was very good and reasonably priced. It deserves at least one extra star for the fact that there is not another decent restaurant within a 25 mile radius. read more

We were there last year for our wedding anniversary. We just had to go back this year. Not disappointed at all. Fabulous place. Last year we just told them it was our anniversary and they gave us a quiet little corner of the restaurant with a small fireplace. Just was beautiful. We requested the same table this year. They had it ready and waiting for us. The food is amazing. You want to eat it all. But they are more than happy to box it up for us. Wait staff is awesome. I'm a huge fan of upscale dining and was really looking forward to dinner here. I was disappointed. The Brie appetizer was a joke - it was mostly sliced fruit. The portion of Brie was about the size of a mini muffin (I know that's a weird reference for size, but it's all I could think of!) and not worth $13. I got the Salmon Oscar. The salmon was cooked perfectly (and so was the broccoli it was served with), however the crab, bernaise, and potatoes it was served with were all very lacking in flavor. My husband's trout was average - not bad at all, but definitely not great. We got bread pudding for dessert and it was awesome. Basically, I have no reason to come back. My bill was $100 and just not worth it. I've been to less expensive places and have been blown out of the water by how great the food was. But $30 for a piece of salmon and $13 for a plate of melon slices? No thanks. read more

You'll be hard pressed to find many places with as much history and ambiance as the tavern. With head chef Keith back at the helm, the new menu doesn't disappoint. It's the perfect blend of rustic and elegance. (The in-house smoked rack of lamb is a prime example.) You really can't go wrong here. It's such a cool place. The history alone is worth the drive to the village of Hanoverton, but the food, the great wait staff, and the decor is something to be impressed with. Amazing old barn structure. Some of the long tables are in the old stalls. The food is very good and pretty pricey. A reuben with fries is $12.50 and a cup of french onion is $6.25. The atmosphere is great. Lots of fireplaces roaring on a cool afternoon. Lots of dead animals on the walls. I've been to two restaurants in the Hanoverton area in the past week. Both of them have a stuffed coyote. They must have a coyote problem. Then again maybe they got the last two. read more

Been going here for years and its usually pretty good. But since the new owner took over prices got jacked up and the food is just sub par. my husband and i came here for valentines. they had a limited menu which i get. We both got the pork chop 39$ each so not cheap. They were very very dry the green beans and mashed potatoes were just ok. We got the special valentines dessert which the waitress made sound fantastic (vanilla cake with a berry filling covered with chocolate ganache with fresh berries and a vanilla bean whipped cream on top). Yea the cake was old not moist at all and no berry filling. Total bill 161.00. Seriously we probably wont ever go back. P.S my husband had the clam chowder and it was good. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday and it was not very busy, but for some reason they seated guests right next to us. This practice makes me crazy because you are then fighting to hear one another talk. During busy times I understand, but not when it is slow. Now for the food. We both ordered sandwiches and were happy with our choices. The chipotle chicken wrap had a nice spice and everything tasted fresh. The club sandwich was tasty with honey mustard instead of mayonnaise. The French fries were crispy and hot. Overall excellent rating for food. Service was so so. Waited for almost 10 minutes before our drink order was taken. Specials were supplied in an undetailed manner as we heard better descriptions from other servers After food was delivered server didn't check back until we were three quarters done . Had a birthday dinner last night at the historic Spread Eagle Tavern. It was a delightful dining experience I can't wait to go back. Walking into the the Spread Eagle Tavern, which was built in 1837 as a hostel, is like stepping back into time. There are large fireplaces everything taking any chill out of the air. Warm wood tones and stone walls create an intimate and cozy atmosphere that just makes you relax. Though the building was completely renovated two years ago it still makes you feel like a weary traveler stopping at the local Inn for a rest. We ordered bruchetta to start, which was delicious with the addition of pesto and a balsamic reduction sauce drizzled over the top. I had the tavern chicken which is a chicken breast stuffed with three types of cheeses and then coated in homemade bread crumbs. It was serviced with scalloped potatoes and veggies. My mom had the sun-dried tomato and artichoke chicken. Her friend had the 9 oz sirloin with baked potato and brussell sprouts. They were all delicious and on the regular menu. Our server also went over the daily specials which included a fish, chicken and steak option. For dessert we shared the French silk pie. It was ok, definitelynot my favorite but it didn't detract from the lovely atmosphere, wonderful dinner or experience of being at such a historic place. We loitered for about two hours over dinner. We were laughing, talking and eating by the fire. It was great! We got permission from the server to wander around a bit and explore the other dining areas. Downstairs is a gorgeous brick cellar with bar and piano. Upstairs there was a large dining room and the Lincoln Suite. My favorite was the parlor all dressed up for Christmas with gorgeous lighted greenery, fireplace and beautiful tree. While not budget friendly it is great for a special occasion. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is because our waitress was super. We ordered the octopus and stuffed Poblano pepper for appetizers. They were ok at best. There was one piece of octopus maybe 4" long smothered with chorizo sausage. The sausage definitely overpowered the octopus, at least the tiny piece that was served. The poblano pepper was also stuffed with chorizo. Stuffed is not quite the case. There was a ball of chorizo a little larger than a golfball stuck into the open end of the pepper. I order the 16 oz ribeye ($52) and it was served to me cold. It also was not even close to 16 oz. 12 at the most. Looked like something they serve you at chain steak house. I took one bite and had the waitress box it up. The next day I warmed up the steak and found it full of gristle and impossible to eat. The only things good about this dining experience was the waitress and the group of friends that I was there with. The waitress did throw in dessert since my steak wasn't good. Omg! I came here for work in Carrollton. I was trying to sleep when apparently the owner wanted to come after hours and smoke with buddies which happened to be outside my room. I knocked and yelled since I have to be up at 245am. They didnt budge. I had to go to the front desk and complain in my nightgown and demand another room and then fully move at 1030pm. Overpriced and completely underwhelming. The food we were served looked nothing like their photos online or even the other Yelp reviews. Maybe business is slow and needs to cut corners. If you order Crab Cakes, wouldn't you expect more than one? I believe this is known as bait and switch. Great place. The building is a restoration of a 1937 home into a restaurant and Inn with 5 rooms. We had French onion and chicken soup both where flavorful. Really good food and the only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the bar tender that was serving me was new and couldn't keep up with the dinner rush. I would recommend his place to anyone with in 30 miles. This is by far better than the fast food and chain restaurants that litter the freeways. It is well worth the detour. read more

We enjoyed our lunch yesterday at the tavern. I would have liked to have been seated in the dining area away from the little alcove area where they put people who have two in their party. Next time I will request that. Their tavern club was ok, I have had better but it wasn't bad. The clam chowder and their soup of the day potato cheddar were excellent. We had been looking forward to having apple crisp for dessert but were informed that is no longer on the menu. They need to remove it from their online site. They offered blueberry crisp instead and it was good, but the apple would have been so much better especially since it's fall. Why not offer both? Bread and butter were good:). Our check was over $53 without beverages...that is kind of high, but we knew that going in. I would recommend this restaurant, but due to the pricing we will keep it at a lunch. read more

Was looking forward to the beef wellington, it was about as big as a tennis ball, it should have had a better portion of pastry on it,was lucky to be able to taste the pastry. And only a small portion of broccolni MY husband had steak, had a decent favor, but wasn't anything better the Longhorn. An amazing birthday celebration for my father! Ms. Julia was so very polite, professional and accommodating. She put me in contact with Ms. Jean (and Steve) who both provided a fantastic tour of the tavern and the surrounding blocks. I started with the 'Liberty Onion' soup which was baked to perfection, followed by the Elk; a very large portion. Hannah, our server, was friendly and attentive, yet not overbearing. Either before or after eating, may I highly recommend picking up the Self Guided Tour and History of the Spread Eagle Tavern and Inn at the reservation desk. Be sure to visit all three floors, visit the rooms and view the paintings and photos on the walls. Do not miss the basement for it is very unique. Also, when you arrive, parking is in the rear of the buildings on Plymouth St. I was in a party of 14 which include 5 children. At the completion of our Sunday afternoon lunch, I did not hear one person in our group mention a negative comment. We had one server and one beverage person during our meal. Our server was above average overall but struggled some to get all our meals on the table in a timely manner. Otherwise, the luncheon was a success. We all tour all the floors both before and after eating. It was well worth the effort and very interesting. I lost count of the rooms where they serve meals, including the basement. If you like Ohio history, then a trip to the Spread Eagle is a great way to spend an afternoon. Bring a camera! read more

I called early in the week for reservations, told them it was a special night, our 40th anniversary. I as for a table by a fireplace for 2. When we arrived, we were shown to a table that was pushed up against a bar that was not being used, so I thought. I asked for a different table and the general manager said that was all they had. It turns out that the bar was being used by the staff to mix drinks and get wine for the tables. It was very noisy and the door to the bar had the lock set so every time someone went in or out, there was a loud metal on metal sound. Behind me, every time someone upstairs flushed, it sounded like the water was coming through the wall. We should have just left then but we had very service in the many times we have visited there. We ordered their Stuffed Peppers to start, well when they came out there was one even though the menu states peppers. The food was ok at best, they were busy and everything felt rushed. To end a very loud disturbing evening, the waiter brought me the check and I gave him my credit card. He brought me out my card and another tables check to sign on my card, it was over double my check. When I brought it to his attention he took my card and check and left for ten minutes. Then he came back and said that he charged me the correct amount but just put the receipts in the wrong folders. Again, very rushed and no customer service. I know they are under restrictions due to what is going on but we were just there in December and it was great. Last night seemed like they just wanted to get you in and out. This is a great place for a lazy lunch in front of the fireplace. The food is always right on target and everything is fresh. We've enjoyed several things here - including the chicken pot pie, crab cake, pork chop and prime rib sandwich (which I see isn't on the menu now). The appetizers, salads, and desserts make for a great meal! Plan for leftovers or to share so you can enjoy an appetizer and dessert! You won't be disappointed. You almost feel as if you are stepping back in time when you are there at lunch as it usually isn't crowded - it is perfect. They are busy enough to serve you and have a decent pace yet empty enough to have space between tables. It is worth the drive to enjoy an afternoon with your favorite lunch date or if you can manage the back roads at night come for the dinner and enjoy a larger menu. I had the steak and it was done on point for me best place to get a steak beside me doing it for my self.
