This is a tough review I really love Spuds fish and chips it's always a welcoming meal after watching my kids baseball games across the street. The price point is high it would be nice to have kids meal option that is cheaper or some sort of family meal option I know this area is very affluent but I am not. A staple and landmark. Spud Fish and Chips has been around for generations, and while this one may not be the original its is equally as good if not better and to me its the only Spud. Spud Fish and Chips may not serve traditional style fish and chips which many seem to complain about but that doesn't make them any worse, Sure I like many would appreciate a light crisp beer batter, but to maintain a solid, consistent beer batter all day with the amount that Spud fries especially when they get busy, form a business and restaurant perspective its just the smarter choice. For those not familiar with Spud, you will immediately identify it by the large sign that can be seen form all directions. Once inside especially when busy, one will without a doubt be hit with the scent of fryer oil. Before approaching the cash register you'll notice the menu up above with ,ore than just fish. Options include chicken, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, shrimp and my personal favorite the clam strips.Oh and don't forget the aioli!When it comes time to order whoever happens to be working the register is typically helpful with explaining and suggesting on how to order. After just a few minutes they call a number rand there's the hot and ready fish! As someone who ha grown up in the area I have had my fair share of Spud Fish & Chips. Especially with the relation with Juanita High School. As many times that Iv'e been there, I cant say I ever felt the service was poor or rude or anything bad. On a side note though, it seems most of the workers here are fairly young fresh out of high school college age. While there's nothing wrong with that I believe there's a misconception, because for the most part they know what they are doing That being said. Spud has an open kitchen you can rally see everything that goes on especially the interactions between staff members. I will say this though, seeing these young kids and young adults perform these actions of producing food for valued customers with continued hospitality and almost never breaking a sweat, is a true joy and pleasure as I know exactly what it is like to be in those shoes. At the end of the day Spud Fish in Chips is not perfect .However they have continued to to great business with the same recipe for nearly a century. So no matter how you feel I encourage you to go down and enjoy some deep fried goodness. read more

I was HUNGRY and had to get to the bank before they closed. Since Spuds is around the corner, I thought I'd stop in as I hadn't been there for ages. I used to think I loved the fish - memory sure fades - or their quality isn't what it used to be. Since I had to watch carbs, I got a cup of Clam Chowder and 3 Fish, only. WOW!! The fish batter must have gold flakes - that came to 15 bucks!! Frickin expensive!! The Chowder was a step up from Ivars in Bothell, but nowhere as good as Ivars Salmon House chowder. The fish - meh!! I have better fish out of the food service box I got at Cash and Carry. The cod is sliced ultra thin and lightly sprinkled with crumbs. The result was 3 very dry slivers (OK they were wide) of fish. Go somewhere else for fish! And 15 bucks! I was wishing I had gone to the other end of Juanita Drive and into Kenmore for something fish from Tacos Guayamos! I wouldn''t have been hungry an hour later! read more

Went here just yesterday for the first time. I was looking forward to some tasty seafood... unfortunately I have to say this place pretty much sucked. I will not be back and I have no idea why this place even has three starts on yelp... can anyone help me understand that? Anyone? We ordered the "Prawns & Chips", the "Calamari & Chips" and 1 soda + a ketchup and a tartar sauce side (which they charge for). The total came out to $22. I thought the portions would be big to justify the cost but they weren't. Sorry, soggy, NOT tasty fries with a very small portion of deep fried seafood was all we got. The Prawns were terrible (and I LOVE prawns) for the cost of $10 I only got 5 medium sized prawns, which I think is a total rip off. The Calamari was okay, it was juicy at least but had absolutely no flavor and we only got about 6 deep fried pieces... not enough to fill even the lightest eater up. To top it off the staff was rude. When we ordered, the guy seemed impatient and after he asked us if we wanted to eat there or get the order to go (we wanted to eat there) he said that you could only do take out after 8:30 PM (I believe it was 8:32 PM when we ordered). Once he was done with us, two attractive young ladies walked in and ordered their meal, to eat there (not to go), and surprise, surprise, the previously impatient guy at the register was just fine with them NOT ordering their food to go after 8:30 PM and proceeded to ask them how their day was going and if they were enjoying the sunny weather. WTF? Bullshit. So here's the summary... low quality food, deep fried, crappy fries, unclean eating area (it had visible dirt on the tables and seats inside the place and the outside eating areas were even worse), EXPENSIVE, charges for condiments, RUDE employees, etc. I will not be going back to this restaurant, there many many many better places for two people to eat better food for around $20 bucks than this place. Honestly, I'm even fine paying for my ketchup (like at Dick's) if the food is cheap and good but when you're charging AT LEAST $7 per person to eat you shouldn't be charging for ketchup. When you want to enjoy some history, great service and a nice thick piece of cod with hot and fresh french fries - look no further than your Spud Fish & Chips in Kirkland. I ordered a single and got a huge piece of delicious fish and a big boat of fries.... and the tartar sauce is fabulous - take a tub home! I love how you can walk up, order, sit down and relax looking at all the old pictures from when Spuds first opened. Larry (owner) is attentive and kind and his manager Vicki is awesome! I have been going to this place since I was very young. Unfortunately like my looks and my shape it has gone down hill with time. Spuds is a small shack of a place right off of Juanita beach. It serves your standard fish and chips with a soda. This place used to be amazing. Everything the fish were juicy, crispy and so were the fries. The service was always fast and friendly. Over the last few years that has not been the case. The fries have become soggy, the portions are smaller, the prices have gone up, and the friendly service has been taken out like the dodo bird. Don't get me wrong this place is still better than your chain/franchise restaurant fish and chips. Actually that is the only reason it is not down to 2 stars. Like anything always try it for yourself but this place could be a lot better. read more

It's frustrating that all the spuds are owned by different Entities now. The fish is always pretty consistent which is very important but the rest of it is not. The service at this location was very friendly and the restaurant was clean and pleasant but it's the little things that make the difference and that's what impacted the quality of the experience for me. The spuds on Alki has great tartar sauce and the Green Lake location used to as well. This place seemed like they were using some generic stuff that just tasted like mayonnaise. It actually upset my stomach. Alki also has "The Special" which is nearly triple the cost of what it was the first time I had it but at least you know what you're getting. I probably won't be back to this location. If I'm paying that much for a fast food meal, I need it to taste better overall. The fish is great but that can't carry the whole thing for me. read more

My family and I were traveling through the Seattle area and passed this location a few times until we finally decided to stop in and satisfy our cravings for fish & chips. In hindsight, we're sorry we did. My wife is from England and I've been there a handful of times. The fish served there is almost always battered and the filets are quite large. That's what we were hoping for at Spud. Unfortunately, the pieces of fish were quite small and they were breaded. I would consider their fish more closely aligned with southern fried fish. they serve vinegar at the table but they said that it was apple cider vinegar. What the...??? Fish & chips is supposed to come with MALT vinegar. Lastly, they charge for sauces, including ketchup. I visited the website and Spud goes so far as to explain why they charge for sauces. I understand their reasoning but it still makes for a clunky customer experience. At first I didn't know if we needed ketchup so I didn't buy any. But then my son wants some so I have to get in line and buy some. Then I have to get up and buy some more. At this point I'm annoyed having to get up from my family dinner to go buy condiments. Charge for sauces if you must, but be prepared for customers to be annoyed. read more

Tried several Spud locations, this one is the worst. Strips of cod are so thin you feel you are buying the batter. Ordered cod fillets -I ate a lot of fish in my life....their fish was not bled after it was caught which leads to the very fishy taste. You can see that the reviews are all over the place for Spud. It's because while their fish is really good there are some things about the place that are pretty annoying. It comes down to: are you willing to put up with the other crap in order to enjoy their tasty fish? For me the answer is "occasionally". Like I said, the fish itself is great, but the problems start with the fries. Kind of soggy, not crisp at all, just not that great. The second, and probably biggest problem, is the price. I'm not one that even pays that much attention to prices but holy monkey are they expensive! And paying for condiments is just annoying. Normally I would say "just raise the menu prices a quarter" but they're so high already I can see why they wouldn't want to. Service is ok, nothing special. I do like how they wrap up your food to go, just using a little paper and a rubber band instead of giving you a big old bag and styrofoam tray to throw away. If the prices were more reasonable this would be a great place but they can get away with their high prices because of their great location, so don't hold your breath waiting for them to lower them. read more

Wow. I saw horror icon Chucky there live and in the flesh. He had that maniacal smirk, those menacing eyes, and of course that red hair. He was there with his parents and throwing a fit in their booth. And not the kind of toddler tantrum a parent puts an end to with a stern look - but an eruption of evil that had his parents looking damn scared. I so wanted to snap a pic on my phone but was frightened he might see and come over the table at me in a bloodthirsty rage. While a bit on the pricy side as far as fish & chips goes, this is the ONLY place I consider when I think to myself, "FISH AND CHIPS, NOW!!!" Salmon and chips is freaking delicious. Hard to give this place a 3, I'd rather give it a 4 but I've got to be real. The fish and chips is good, the halibut and chips is really good. The fries (chips) are not phenomenal but more so average, kind of wilty. The halibut is really good (flaky, moist, thick) and the batter is really good too. They provide different types of vinegar for the fish. The place itself is small, right across from Juanita Beach park. The establishment seems like more of a beach shack more than anything else. There are a bunch of HS kids working behind the counter and the food is served in cardboard containers (not that there's anything wrong with that because that's all you need anyway). Overall, if you're craving great fish and chips: come here, get the halibut and chips, don't expect anything more, enjoy. read more

Me and my girlfriend both wanted some clam chowder and some fries. I'm not a chowder snob by any means (although most of the better chowders I have had around here were at the Seattle waterfront, and Ivar's is decent for a chain store). Unfortunately, living in kirkland, ever since they demolished the Ivar's in Kenmore, the nearest Ivar's is pretty much all the way in Bellevue. We both wanted chowder fast, so I figured we would give the kirkland spud's a try. I remember having gone to the Greenlake spud's when I was a kid and thought it was okay, so when we went to the kirkland one it's not like I had high expectations in advance. Anyway, yes the place is staffed by highschool students. That's not a big deal in my opinion. They seemed prompt enough and were generally on the ball. However the food itself (especially for the price) was very mediocre. When me and my GF had eaten a far amount of the chowder we just sort of looked at each other with a disappointed face. The chowder was very bland, and had few clams in it. The fries were also mediocre, and served in small portions, although I admit they were very hot. Additionally they do charge you if you want ketchup, which for me was just extra salt in the wound afterwards. When we were driving away, my GF commented on how the clam chowder basically just tasted like they heated up some of the progresso clam chowder that you can buy from Costco. I agreed with her. I'm a West Seattle native, and so I grew up eating spuds on alki beach every summer... I just moved to Juanita and coincidentally there happens to be a Spud 5 minutes from where I live. I finally went in tonight to see if it's up to par with West Seattle and this is what I came to find after everything was said and done: PROS: good job guys! Bathrooms are pretty clean. I also thought your clams and your onion rings were pretty good. CONS: the fish was so/so. The tartar was really sour and there was barely any relish so it was kind of different.... I didn't like that your staff lectured my boyfriend after he spent 35 bucks on dinner for two on tartar prices when he wasn't offered it at the counter. I thought it was unnecessary and since he spent a lot the girl could've let that 50 cents go... One thing that confused me was the menu though..... Why is it different at each restaurant? This place is great! I was up in my feelings all morning and wanted to try this place right around the corner from me and boy are my spirits lifted. The customer service they showed was spectacular.
