Found this place on our last day of my Seattle trip at the beginning of October and I could honestly say it's definitely gonna be one of my go-to establishment for fish and chips whenever I'm back in Seattle. The drive from downtown took about 20-25 minutes but you are blessed with the view of Alki Beach. The lot is small but we arrived right when they opened so we were able to get a spot. The staffs were nice, and the fish and chips is reasonably priced. The packaging wrap the fish and chips doubles as a place mat so it was great. We also got a cup of chowder which the husband finished. I'm not a big fan of chowder but I like enjoyed the breading of the fish and chips. They also have a lot of seatings downstairs, upstairs, as well out outdoors. Will definitely come back. read more

Good historic fish and chips shop with friendly folks and a neighborhood feel. Service: very friendly folks. Smiles. Kind. Attentive. Ambiance: relaxing and neighborhoodly. Come in and order at the counter, and find a seat downstairs or upstairs. You can enjoy the view of the waters from inside. Food: - fish: pretty good and flakey. Note that each piece is pretty big! - chips/fries: I didn't like the fries as much. Kind of soft and mushy vs crispy and crunchy. - tartar sauce: amazing! I'm pretty sure they make it themselves. We ordered another large tartare to enjoy with the fish. - clam chowder: It's on the creamy side which was my first reaction, but it sure grows on you! They don't skimp ok the clam. Speaking of the clam, it's amazing inside this chowder. So tender and soft. Parking: Saturday lunch we found free parking on the streets easily but I think there's actually a parking lot here! The legend of The Spud is real! Fantastic local spot with absolutely amazing Fish & Chips! Fresh, crispy, flaky & salty good tasting cod that really satisfies. Ask for the 3 kinds of vinegar, they're all wonderful. And the tartar sauce appears to be homemade. The Pineapple shake is choc full of pieces of pineapple and real coconut flavor. Been going here for the past 50 years and I'm still a big fan. Looks like I haven't been in awhile though because there's no such thing as a single with extra fish, and it's just called a 2-piece - no more big cardboard of fries. I normally don't like limpy fresh cut so these guys must do a double fry because I whoof down a bunch of hot ones until my fish cools. Garlic vinegar is the way to go vs tartar sauce for me. Two 2-piece specials with a soda, one chowder and one coleslaw was about $45. Plenty of parking in the lot on this fine day. Downstairs seating full and upstairs darn near. I think all the other folks came on foot. I'll take Spuds any day over Ivars. read more

A bit pricey but the food was ok. Unfortunately the place is filthy. Bathrooms were very dirty and no towels to dry your hands. Ate upstairs and the tables were not cleaned, the area where you get utensils and napkins was really gross. They need to get the employees that are standing around to clean the place up. read more

Love this place! Right on the main strip of Alki Beach. This place has been here since 1935! Started off as a small wooden shack. They serve fish and chips with several other items to choose from. We enjoyed the halibut fish and chips. It was delicious. Homemade french fries to go with it. The coleslaw was tasty as well. The batter on this fish has cornmeal in it. I loved it. Definitely would go back here and try the car next time. Seem to be the favorite with everyone. You walked up to the counter to order your food. They call your number for pick up. They cook it right in front of you, and wrap it up in a special way to take. Definitely worth checking out if you're down at Alki Beach. read more

This iconic Fish and Chips restaurant is one of my favorites when visiting Alki. It has remained pretty much the same for decades. As with all things, prices continue to rise, but the fish and chips are worth it. Their Cole slaw is average but it is a good balance with fries and the fish. I love that you can pick it up, it is portable and easy to take across the street to eat and people watch. read more

Awesome location at the beach, friendly service, I just wish the food match up to the 5 star view. The fish is so thinly sliced, you taste more the batter than the fish. Fish is fresh but would be so much better if they have a thicker slice so you can actually taste the fish. Fried clam has nice flavor - if you get pieces with real clam inside. The perfect place for this summer for a great view and great food. I took my mother here and she loved how quick everything was.

So we heard rave reviews of this place, plus it was right across the street from where we were playing in the water. We pretty much had the fish and chips, except a few had the chicken and chips. All in all the flavor was good, it was a bit dry that I had to drench in malt vinegar and ketchup. The main complaint we had about this place, is upstairs has not ventilation. Plenty of windows, but you can't open it to get air. It was a very warm day at 90 degrees for Seattle, and our California guest were sweating so much we had to eat fast, and get back to our AC cars. So even though it rains more than hot in Seattle, make sure you have ventilation upstairs during extreme heat. read more

I have loved Spud fish and chips for over 70 years. Since Ive moved to California, l visit Spud every time I'm here in Seattle. I've never missed Spud any time in Seattle. I visited Alki last night with my family and was extremely disappointed. When we entered we were not greeted and felt unwelcome. The entire restaurant-was filthy but especially the upstairs dining area. There were smashed french fries and trash under the tables and in the areas around the tables additionally the Windows were filthy. While we were eating, a female employee came up to clean the floor but did a half hearted job with a broom, not even a vacuum. The fish and fries which have always been great were horrible. The fries were overcooked, bordering on burnt. Bottom line, there was nothing redeeming. Like so many companies today, Spud seems to suffer from a complete lack of management and training. In the past I considered Spud to have the best fish and chips anywhere and bragged about it to anyone who would listen. Sadly, I now will not be returning. read more

I've been to spuds now a few times and it's my go to fish and chips place in the Seattle area, especially for a beach day at Alki! Out of all the times I've been here, there's been 1 time I think the fish was below the mark, but I've been very impressed all other times! A lot of hype for mediocre food. We drove almost an hour from downtown but honestly, the fish wasn't that great--not much flavor-- and the soup was almost like water--I had to add extra crackers, salt, and pepper to give it any substance. Disappointing for being so close to the ocean. Our fish and chips is better in Idaho of all places. Lol. And the shrimp cocktail was TINY for the price, with more sauce and celery than actual shrimp. He picked the hair out and continued to make another set of fish without changing his gloves. His name was Dylan? Please wear a beard mask and remember to change your gloves. Food is always fried with goodness! My kid love to eat here on cold sunny days. Perfect for chowder and fish & chips. Sadly upstairs is real real cold on days under 45° outside. I ordered a three piece fish and chips and my buddy got one piece, we both got a small tater, when asked for more, they said go back to the register and buy more, which was basically a dollar. When i said thats robbery to charge a customer for extra tarter when you give the same size tarter for one piece. Great tasting fish and chips that arrived quickly. Unfortunately, they forgot my soda and I had to wait a bit for the person to come out of the back to give it to me. Also, there was a spill in the main restaurant area and it was difficult to pick up my order because I had to walk straight through it. Maybe if there is a spill next time they could put the pick ups on the other end of the counter, so people don't have to walk across the wet floor. It was very precarious. I really loved the garlic vinegar and the views from upstairs are great. The fries are just like Dick's Hamburgers. The music is oldies/60s and a smidge too loud. The restroom was a little gross with standing water and a broken paper towel holder. Overall, it was a great experience and I would come back, but maybe eat my fish out on the beach next time. I grew up in Seattle and went to Lafayette Elementary back in the days of bussing. My brother attended West Seattle High for a time. Mom would occasionally pick us up and we'd go to Spuds as a treat. Four decades later, having lived and traveled elsewhere, their fish is still among the best I've had. Some of my best memories was not on sunny days but during cold, wet rainy days eating clam chowder on the 2nd floor. West Seattle still has that vibe of a beach town separate from Seattle. I've been going here since I was a kid, and it has always been a favorite. Overall the food is good. The fish and other seafood is light, crispy, well prepared, and a good-sized portion. The coleslaw is okay and better than at other places; it really should be included with the order at no additional cost, with the option to buy extra. I don't like any clam chowder at all, so I can't comment on Spud's. Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall any lemon wedges being available, though the various vinegars are good. As another reviewer mentioned, the amount of tarter sauce given should increase with the number of fish ordered. That is, one tartar sauce serving for each piece of fish. The service is friendly and efficient and the place always is clean and tidy. Of course, there is the great view if you're eating in or across the street on the beach. The ample parking in the back is a godsend as parking anywhere on Alki usually involves finding a space blocks away from where you want to go. It's getting more expensive to eat fish & chips anywhere, but Spud's seems comparable to other places. My only real complaint is the French fries. They are greasy, limp, and overcooked but with a raw taste. Please improve the frying technique. Are you using the two-temperature technique so that the fries are crispy on the outside and fluffy inside? read more

Ok, I tried this place because of the reviews .... My opinion on on the fish and chips they are not the best. The breading is to heavy for my liking . The tartar sauce taste like relish. The garlic vinegar was pretty good and the fresh cut fries were good too. I would not return. It was clean and had prompt service . The view from upstairs is beautiful. read more

Stopped by here on my way from the airport to Seattle. Got the 1pc fish & fries meal with a bowl of clam chowder. Everything tasted decent and no complaints. Tried this place out based on reviews and the decades open for business. Drove out of my way. Ordered the 3 piece with cup of chowder and fries. Fries are good. To me, fresh cut style. Chowder is very good. Thicker and classic pacific NW style. I prefer thicker chowder and this hit the spot. The fish, pretty good. To me it had a corn meal like breading. Just ok. Not much flavor and edges hard as a rock. I've have way better fish, so not sure why this place is getting mega rave reviews. Probably because of location on Alkai Beach area and the length of time it's been in business. Would I go out of my way again, no. If I was in the area for some reason, sure I would get it again. Nice little spot to drop by. Though it's a bit gloomy and foggy, who can complain about having a cup of icy water alongside the bay. I love Spuds. I've been going for about 25 years or so. I had a craving and decided to make the drive to Alki. I ordered the fish & chips-I'll get to this review later. It's COVID so my expectation is that everyone is taking extra precaution, including staff, so when the person who rang me up also got my meal together and actually touched the food in the process, I was surprised that she didn't change her gloves. It should be noted that I asked her about it and she did say she changed her gloves. However, I was standing right there and didn't see it and not wanting to take any chances I asked for my food to be remade, which they happily accommodated. But there was another woman working who was sanitizing her gloves...not changing them but has sanitized them maybe 2 times since I had been there. This made me feel uncomfortable. Gloves should be changed regularly, not sanitized with hand sanitizer, which means she is not changing her gloves. The meal was not as satisfying as it has been in the past. It did it not hit the spot. The fish was kind of soggy and had lost its crisp, so I'm not sure how fresh it was. I ate in my car after I received my order so sitting should not have been a factor. Also, I ordered a malted chocolate milk shake, which i have ordered from here many times before. It looked vanilla and it tasted like vanilla. I asked the woman about it and she said something about a new machine and the chocolate. These malted milkshakes are my fav, so I was disappointed by this. It was like milk and malt and no ice cream. It was completely frothy milky stuff within 5 minutes. I couldn't drink it so I stuck it in the freezer. There was a separation and I'm not sure what this is. I hate to have to post this review because I really like Spuds, but also it's hard times and COVID and so I want to share my experience in consideration of money and safety. read more

I love the location right across the street from the water. It has a small, private PARKING lot, which is helpful. The CHOWDER was good. The CLAM STRIPS were some of the best, not chewy. The BATTERED COD tasted amazing! The batter tasted buttery. The OYSTERS were fresh and yummy...you only get like 6 though. The homemade TARTAR SAUCE was so sweet, yuck.
