SPUDS!!! West Seattle's staple when walking, bicycling, roller blading, or cruising the Alki strip!! I've been coming here since the 80's, and brought all of my family through here. Whether my immediate and local to out of towners, we always stop by to take in this classic spot of Fish & Chips! Today was a trip into nostalgia. It's been a minutes since I've been here, and cruised some iconic places in West Seattle, and it wouldn't have been complete without a Two Piece Cod Fish & Chips with their signature fries. It wouldn't be complete without trying one of their shakes. It was such a beautiful day out, and we opted to sit outside and take in the scenery and people. OMG, what is happening? West Seattle locals, my wife and I have a favorite order that has gone up in price 20% since we last ordered. This is out of control. $13 for a single piece of cod, no fries or anything? $28 for halibut and chips? This is insane. We've been coming here for years but this stops now. This is one of the hidden gems in West Seattle. A friend turned me onto this place a few years ago and to be honest, I didn't have high expectations. I will be the first to admit when I'm wrong and I definitely was in this case. Food is served hot and fresh and what a great order of fish and chips. Fish was tender and flaky with a nice batter coating. The fries were crispy and did not have to wait more than 10 minutes for my order anytime I went there. Great staff and they keep the place very clean. Highly recommended if you're up near Alki Beach or West Seattle. read more

I got a true cod two piece meal and upgraded my drink to a pineapple shake and it was delicious! Service was great, I was originally going to order these things separately but the staff recommended a meal so it would be cheaper! Spud has a cool, retro vibe, and it's clear that it has a lot of Seattle history. We walked in on a random Wednesday after walking along Alki Beach. Counter service was quick and kind. I could see this place being busy in the summertime! The fish was pretty good. We got the cod 2-piece meal and halibut 3-piece. The fish had a nice, crispy breading. I preferred the cod over the halibut. The fries were not very salty or flavorful. No refills on soda. Great view of the water from the upstairs dining room! Overall, a pretty good experience and nice for a quick meal, but a bit more than I'd like to pay for what I'd consider fast food and nothing to write home about. read more

I miss Spud the most!! I've always called it "Spuds." I spent my high school years coming here with my friends (West Seattle baby!) and especially loved coming with my family because they paid for everything! :D What a great place with the best fish and chips and clam chowder in Seattle. I normally do not write restaurant reviews. I have to today. My wife and I had lunch today at Spud. I ordered 3-piece halibut and fries. My wife two pieces of rock cod. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. The halibut was overcooked and dry. The cod at half the price was better. Fries were greasy and soggy. The clam chowder was actually clam soup. They are celebrating 90 years of business. Not sure how they can stay in business. We will not be back. read more

I LOVE Spud fish and chips! My family has been coming here since I was born and it's consistent and tasty each time. One piece of fish is enough for me as they're large, so I usually share a 2 or3 piece cod with someone. I've also had the clams a few times and those are tasty as well. It's a little annoying they charge for tartar sauce as I feel some should come free for the prices they charge. Oh well! Not going to stop me from getting my fix. The homemade tartar itself is very good. The chowder is decent but nothing too memorable and the same goes for the coleslaw. If you want great chowder head to Ivars or Pike Place Chowder, Their fries are in my opinion, perfect and you can tell they're fresh cut. Make sure to use some garlic malt vinegar for your food too! The service is fast and efficient, even if there's a crowd. If you want views of the ocean, sit upstairs. There's also tables outside and a few on the main level you can access with no stairs. There's only a small amount of parking in their lot but unless it's a weekend or a super nice day, you should be able to find some close. read more

I use to enjoy Spuds Fish And Chips . I would regularly order my favorite, dish which was fried clams and chips! Unfortunately, my clams are always burnt. In fact, the last three orders I received from them were a huge disappointment. I sure hope they will be more consistent with their fried items. I have been a fan of the Spud for 30+ years, until now. They were famous as a place where you could buy "the special" and receive three huge fish filets as big as your hand, fries and a giant drink for under $15. After Ivars bought the Alki location, things obviously became more corporate. The fish got smaller and the prices steadily raise. I thought, "Well that's just how it goes." But recently I bought the special for $25.75 and got three pieces of fish barely 2" x 2" and one was inedible - obviously spoiled. I just hate the fact that Ivars has killed this formerly wonderful business - even while at least maintaining acceptable quality at actual Ivars restaurants. It's a huge loss to Seattle. BTW, the other Spud locations have different owners and offer at least adequate food quality. read more

I tried Spud's in Alki for the first time, and it did not disappoint. The fish and chips were amazing - each piece of fish was huge, incredibly crispy, and tasted so fresh, not frozen. The fries were perfectly crispy with the ideal crunch. I especially loved their tartar sauce, which tasted homemade. Everything was excellent. The clam chowder was on the thicker side, warm, and very flavorful. I'm curious if this location is connected to the ones in Edmonds and Kirkland. read more

I have been visiting this Spud's for 60 years and have had great experiences there. The dine in ambience is fair, but enjoy upstairs with a better view than the busy lobby tables. The food has diminished in both size and flavor over the years. This recent visit, three piece fish with fries, the fish was the smallest I've seen. Service behind the counter from order taking to food delivery was fast, efficient and friendly. Sadly, for a mid day nice day Sunday, they were working so hard, all available tables were dirty and messy. The bathrooms were in need of clean up and trash emptied. Regardless, I'm loyal, still enjoy the restaurant and employees. I hope Spud's will attract new fans, but keep reasonable portions, taste and cost balanced better. Alki Spud is still the best place for fish and chip in the Seattle/Tacoma area. This is one of very few places that still serves good ol' greasy, homemade french fry, and the fish is still the best, kind of like what Skipper had in the good ol' days. It's also the only fish and chip place I know of that has milkshake. If you dine in, you get to admire a nice view of downton Seattle. Don't confuse Alki Spud with other, similarly named restaurants. The others don't have homemade french fry, and at least one - Green Lake Spud - doesn't even have pop on tap. read more

The prices have gone up definitely but they still stay reasonable considering the location, the quality and the amount you get. The staff is always fast. The best fried clam strips!!!! I will treat myself with their halibut every so often but their cod is delicious all n all! Grab it to go and find a spot on the walk way or over looking the city! Dear Alki Spud's Team, I'm writing to share some disappointing experiences I've had recently at your restaurant, which has long been one of my daughter's favorite spots for dinner. She especially loves your prawns, and we've made a point of coming to Alki Spud's for them many times. However, on my last two visits -- including my most recent visit around 7:00 PM -- I was told that the prawns were not available. I understand that certain items may run out during peak times, and I can accept that. What made the experience frustrating was the way the cashier handled the situation. Both times, the cashier simply told me, "We don't have any right now," in a very dismissive and indifferent manner, without offering an explanation, apology, or suggesting an alternative. His attitude made me feel unwelcome and as though I was an inconvenience rather than a valued customer. It even left me feeling like I should have had a back-up plan for dinner, which really took away from what should have been a positive experience for me and my daughter. We've always loved coming to Alki Spud's, and I hope this feedback helps to improve the service going forward. A more helpful and professional approach from staff -- even when items are unavailable -- would make a big difference. If you like fish and chips you will have to stop and review these yourself! They're flat here, almost like a fish patty. The first bite was juicy but further bites were a bit drier. Taste was just okay this time but I still really enjoyed these fish and chips. An order of two was perfect for sharing between two of us. I really liked all the photos along the wall. I actually learned a lot of Alki Beach history just from the photos.
