Fun fact: this is the oldest fast food restaurant in Seattle, founded in 1935 (even earlier than Dick's Burgers, 1954). I went here Sunday evening for dinner and it was fairly busy - fast casual spot that is known for fish and chips and chowders. There is an upstairs area as well, but we mostly got the food to go to eat at the beach that is across the street. We ordered the 2pc fish and chips with an extra serving of tartar sauce, and clam chowder cup. Fish and chips is alright - the fish is nicely battered though a little bit too chewy in texture, so it was hard to just use the fork to eat it. Fries were soggy and underwhelming - definitely skip it (the menu has fish-only options so I would recommend saving a few bucks and just do that). Clam chowder was also a bit underwhelming - there is not really the creaminess that is usually present in clam chowder, and I can taste a slight aftertaste of overcooked soup from the pot. I guess this being so central to the beach, especially with good weather in the summertime, combined with the low number of restaurants that open relatively late (most close 8-9pm), that this place still fares pretty well as a food option and is still in business for so long. read more

Dear Alki Spud's Team, I'm writing to share some disappointing experiences I've had recently at your restaurant, which has long been one of my daughter's favorite spots for dinner. She especially loves your prawns, and we've made a point of coming to Alki Spud's for them many times. However, on my last two visits -- including my most recent visit around 7:00 PM -- I was told that the prawns were not available. I understand that certain items may run out during peak times, and I can accept that. What made the experience frustrating was the way the cashier handled the situation. Both times, the cashier simply told me, "We don't have any right now," in a very dismissive and indifferent manner, without offering an explanation, apology, or suggesting an alternative. His attitude made me feel unwelcome and as though I was an inconvenience rather than a valued customer. It even left me feeling like I should have had a back-up plan for dinner, which really took away from what should have been a positive experience for me and my daughter. We've always loved coming to Alki Spud's, and I hope this feedback helps to improve the service going forward. A more helpful and professional approach from staff -- even when items are unavailable -- would make a big difference. What can I say, it's Spuds! It's reliably tasty food and has been for decades. I love their fish and chips and especially like the halibut. There are lots of menu options so everyone can find something they like. Upstairs seating means there's plenty of space for any size party. On the other hand, the fish was super dry and the outside batter completely fell off the fish itself, which was average. The fish is nice and crispy. The breading is not too oily or dry. The fish underneath the breading is perfectly soft and melts in your mouth. The portions are great for the price, especially with a decent sized piece of fish paired with a good amount of fries. I also love the clam chowder and usually get a bowl when I'm here. The chowder comes with saltine crackers. I would drive all the way to West Seattle just for Spuds! Love Spuds, been coming here for nearly 2 decades and always worth the trip even with all the other great options the Alki strip sports. Yeah I agree the fries are nothing special but that is not why we come here. Still cannot beat the fresh fried cod fillets, especially if you eat them there fresh out of the frier. I even their calms and prawns as well but the fish n chips are always great. Do you know what I love about spuds it's the same I grew up here. I've been coming here my whole life and I can always go in there and get good seafood, deep-fried, seafood and it's always consistent. This restaurant is horrible. Whoever thinks there food is good has horrible taste buds. I bought pretty much everything off the menu and the oysters were disgusted looked extremely old tasted worse then they looked. Halibut and cod were pre cooked fish quality was not it nothing was fresh. Customer service was not it everyone was extremely rude. I've been going to Spud's ( yes, Spud's) since the 60's. We had it for dinner last night and my husband and I were speechless. I know that some restaurants are downsizing but this was ridiculous. Your fish portions notoriously heap over the paper vessel but in this case one piece was actually the size of a hockey puck while the rest of the fish portions were half their previous size. Unfortunately you have completely morphed into Ivars. You were known for delicious fish and generous size portions. You stood out from all the others. It is what it is but it's just sad. read more

This restaurant was filthy inside. My kids had to wait for food downstairs which gave me plenty of time to look around the dining area upstairs. The bathroom smelled similar to a porta potty. The booths we sat in had a section at top of dark gray film, the trash upstairs in dining area was overflowing, the bottom of trash area where it met the carpet was disgusting and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. The napkin dispenser had grime and dirt all over it. If I had seen this beforehand I wouldn't have ordered. We barely touched our food once we got it.
