Places like this that are local are so rare which is why it's important that we continue to support them. Their burgers are good but the patties are very thin so get a double if you like more meat. My favorite thing here is the fried zucchini, just wish it came with ranch that didn't cost .83 cents for a small thing. The teriyaki chicken sandwich is also very good, as are the fish and chips. So I was by about 2 weeks ago and got my Lou's Special(named after Lou Dapas, famed South-End Burger impresario-there was a time when every local burger joint had a 'Lou' burger in deference), so today I was in the area and found myself being drawn to By's for their famous Fish & Chips! Had a nice chat with the hostess; she has been there EVERY TIME I have stopped in over the last 21 years. Ordered the 2 piece Cod & chips plus a jumbo tarter-as a WA native I love tartar sauce with fries, too! Food came out quickly and was devoured just as quickly, so much so I forgot to take any photos. Fresh, crispy coating, just the right amount of grease to be satisfying. Generous amount of fries. Daughter up @ WWU, otherwise i would have gotten her a shake-her fave is blackberry. By's serves the best fish and chips I've ever had. The fish is breaded with a light crust of panko, not batter, so it's light with a bit of a crunch. Never greasy, never burnt. They put the same excellent fish in the fish sandwich, which I also recommend highly. Be careful, though, the fish is served very hot. The fries are good as well. The lady who runs the place is friendly and efficient. Friendly service. Basic SODO decor--a few tables, lots of laminate. But kid friendly, not too rough like some SODO joints. Happy to have in our rotation for a quick bite. Last time I was there was in the mid 80s and the food is just as wonderful with hearty portions as I remember it back then, the fish and chips was carefully prepared with tartar sauce and coleslaw and ketchup for the fries and flavorful Homestyle fries with the skin on, there is many menu options and everything is to Delight, the staff is exceptionally friendly and inviting, the hamburgers are out of this world good! Thick, square cut (sweet potato style cut) natural fries that are extra crispy (over-fried) with not enough salt. Seattle may be replacing old buildings with the new, but By's is here to stay. I had no idea this place existed until my Lyft driver passed by it en route to a meeting I had in the SODO area. What first appealed to me was the retro signage, with teal and fluorescent colors, reminding me of old-school burger joints I frequented in eastern Washington. And walking in just made me feel nostalgic despite not having visited By's before. You just get the sense that By's has been around. Which it has! I later learned from an employee that By's has been around since the late 1950's and the current owners have managed this place for the past 18 years. Love that! And based on all the signage, it seems that By's is known for their fish. When I got up to order at the counter, I was conflicted between a burger, what I initially came in for and the fish. After asking the cashier what she recommended for a first-timer she said that though the burgers are really good here, the fish is what people come back for, suggesting her personal favorite, the Fish Sandwich. Gotta trust the pros, right? I went with the Fish Sandwich and a side of Curly Fries. Though you order at the counter, the cashier delivers your food to the table, which didn't take long. First impression - wow! The Fish Sandwich was stacked high, with three cod fillets. I definitely had to cut this baby in half, to even try to eat this thang. Fish was awesome! It was flaky and perfectly cooked and liked that it wasn't seasoned very much, getting to really taste the cod itself. On the sandwich was tartar, cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickle. It was a hearty sandwich and was good. But I think I would just order the Fish & Chips for next time, so as to get all the goodies without the extras that I got with the sandwich. I wanna just taste the fish! Curly Fries are something that the cashier told me they recently added to the menu and I'm a sucker for them, which is why I just HAD to get them. But unfortunately, I would not recommend them. They were overly greasy, so distracted from the taste of the Fish Sandwich. Stick with the handcut fries here...with the housemade tartar sauce! Tartar is an extra charge, but is worth it. During my visit here, most everyone who came to dine in ordered the fish! Glad to have tried it here. But they definitely have a large enough menu that will appeal to non-fish eaters, too. Service was awesome. The cashier here was sooo incredibly friendly, making conversation with everyone. She even checked in with me, making sure that the meal was to my liking and offered recommendations for next time. By's is just the kind of place where you can enjoy casual and classic fare and the staff get to know you and swap stories. Not the same as the the '80s. Hamburger's were thick and hand made. Burgers today seemed like a Costco patty that was pressed on the grill. The hand cut fries came darker than normal. My husband's coat still smells bad of old oil. You have to pay extra for any condiments other than ketchup, that's including your burger. They were very friendly though.
