I have driven by here a few times and I always wanted to try their pastries, being somewhat of a self described doughnut mavin. This past monday I went out of my way to get here on my morning drive, I certainly was glad that I made the effort. Coffee was tasty- about average for donut shop coffee. I was glad to see a good selection of doughnuts and other pastries- it was a little hard to pick out just a couple so I ended up buying about twice what I had intended to originally (I bet that you do too). All of the doughnuts that I bought were very tasty and fresh (I would expect them to be at 7 in the ayem) but I was particularly impressed with the "Red Velvet" doughnut. A wonderful "party of flavors" in the mouth! The muffins in the case looked tempting and next visit I will pick up some. I guess it all started when I was a child and my mother started working at the donut shop out near the highway. She'd bring home french cruellers that I thought looked like tractor tires. She worked at a few other places, but ended up helping an old friend with another donut place. This was back when Mr. Donut was the big chain and Dunkin' Donut was just a crumb out on the east coast. Donuts have always been there for me. In high school my father would take me to the local donut shop before dropping me at school to hit the weight room. During the summer my crew buddies and I would hit that very same shop at least once a day for two donuts and a carton of milk. Before every home game during college the entire team would eat a jelly-filled donut before heading down to the stadium to get ready for that day's game. In the spring we'd haze the pledges by sending them for donut runs at 2:00 in the morning and then again at 6:00. Ahhh, college... We had hot donuts freshly made at midnight as a treat after late night class and would drive 30 minutes for "hot donuts now" while I studied for my first professional degree. Or Dunkin Donuts before a late afternoon class. Yes, donuts are part of my DNA (it is, after all, Donut-ribose Nucleic Acid, right?) Solid donuts. A dozen assortment for under 10 bucks of donuts that actually taste like...donuts! (for comparison see dunkin) This place had a wide assortment of flavors from fruit fillings to glazed old fashioned, to chocolate, red velvet and so many coconut options, it was great. The favorites of the bunch were the German chocolate and lemon filling. I don't usually like chocolate donuts because they've got an artificial back taste at a lot of places but that was not the case here. Just a solid chocolate whammy of flavor and finished off with crisp, sweetened coconut. It's begging to be eaten with coffee. The store itself is pretty no frills but I prefer it that way. Tried my first maple bacon and trust me that's my favorite at the moment, but who knows the next new donut might beat it. I went there on 420 and loved they had green sprinkle donuts for the day, and I should of gotten more because there was almost a fight for it lol. The staff is amazing, kind, helpful, and just absolutely wonderful people. Even tho it's not a big place, I watched each time as the staff cleaned the place top to bottom, it was so clean in there I'd eat off the floor but didn't want to mess it up. Who doesn't love Spunky Dunkers, a Palatine institution. If you're lucky enough to get there in time, try the cinnamon swirl donut. As big as a plate and even better if you take it home and put it in the microwave for a few seconds. The reviews made me excited to try this place when we were in Palatine on a Sunday morning. It was busy, too. The line that formed outside of the door also suggested that these donuts were something to be excited for. I was left a little disappointed. The selection seemed a little limited. We opted for 2 red velvet, two sour cream, two vanilla glazed, a long john and the m and m donut. The sour cream donut was dry and had a very thick, dark layer around it, which suggested it was over fried. Maybe they are meant for "dunking", as the name of the place suggests, but that's not my thing. The red velvet donuts were just okay, and my family wasn't impressed with our other choices, either. There certainly wasn't anything bad about this place, but there was nothing exciting about it, either. One perk, though- they have counter seating and restrooms, which makes this a decent place to be able to sit down and eat. read more
