Biggest take away from the start. These people are volunteers & they don't have to do this. They are making this amazing food to help support the church & its causes. They are doing everything they can to accommodate & get us out the door as happy as can be. But this is not a restaurant & they don't have a typical set up. So things may be a little unorthodox. Ha get it? They don't have a way to tell their regular hours. Other sites I saw online said it was 8-2. I got there at 8, but the sign said Saturdays, 9-2. I felt it was worth it to wait around. Today, as of 12/21/24 their hours are 9-2. I was told they will be closed the next few weekends for the holidays. They are very popular & for very good reason. The food is amazing!!! Just be patient & kind.

Date: 8-June-2024 Time: 10.50am Total (before tip): $16.00 Payment type: Cash Server: N/A Grade: A+ Being Eastern European, I miss the food! I would have never thought I would find a home tasting food at church, of all places! They usually sell a variety of things on Saturdays between 9am and 2pm. I came in for some cabbage rolls. We were planning on having those for dinner and let me tell you, they did not disappoint! Reminded me of how my grandma used to make them! Definitely will be back for more! A+!

What was left.... From Top left clockwise: Blueberry, sauerkraut, sweet cheese, potato.

Authentic Ukrainian pierogies!! My daughter and I agree our favorite is the sauerkraut and I dip them in stone mustard. I think that is the Lithuanian in us :). My gf loves the potatoes ones dipped in sour cream. The sweet cheese are ok. We tried melting (DF) butter, brown sugar, and pepper as a dipping sauce....not too shabby. Good with the potatoes ones. Tried the blueberry today.....ummmm....lets just say I treated like a crepe and dipped it in syrup and enjoyed them.

Good service, good people, and good prices. :) I liked the potato pierogi's but the cheese ones were not for me. It was some sort of crumbly cheese inside. The cookies were good. 3 stars because it personally wasn't for me, but the food was good quality and the people are very friendly.

I love all things Eastern European, especially the food. I spent a large chunk of my college years trekking through the Balkans, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, all the way to Poland and Ukraine. In some countries I had a better grasp of the languages than in others, but every single place spoke my language loud and clear. I'm not talking English - I'm talking ethnic cuisine, particularly carbs and meat. Furthermore, the culinary art of combining the two. Pierogi are my weakness (Please note that they are spelled pierogi and not pierogis with an S. Pierogi is already plural. Don't make me pull out my red grading pen!). I was eating them almost daily when I was in Poland and Ukraine. They are a staple there and I never found a bad one. My favorite are filled with meat, but I also like potato and cheese when done properly. I even continued to eat them here in the US because Chicago has such a huge population of Eastern Europeans that you can pretty much pick up a rock, chuck it in any direction and you're likely to hit a store that sells this food (but I don't encourage vandalizing). I have found it's a little harder to locate these shops in the suburbs, but it's not completely hopeless. A couple friends raved about the St. Andrew Ukrainian Kitchen and I live relatively close to the Orthodox Church. I pass it a couple times a week and always marvel at how beautiful it is. I had no idea that they also prepared and sold food, so I did a little research - Everything is prepared by the St. Sophia Sisterhood and the St. Andrew Brotherhood. Food is sold out of the Kitchen (the common building to the right when you enter the grounds) on Saturdays from 8am until 2pm, but you will want to arrive early or pre-order to guarantee you get what you want. I arrived around 11am and nabbed the last 8 pastries. Their menu isn't huge, but there is a decent assortment and it makes ordering very simple. They offer 1 Dozen Pierogi/Varenyky/Pelmeni in Potato, Cheese or Sauerkraut for $5. You can also order 2 Kielbasa links for $8 or Stuffed Cabbage Rolls/Holubtsi/vGolabki/Golubtsy/Sarma for $2. Kolachky are 50c each and come in different flavors (Cherry is quite good). They also make fresh White Bread and Rye Bread and sell Honey from a farm. There are specialty items (Smoked Bacon, European-style cakes, etc) on sale for holiday events. I spent about 15-20 minutes standing in line, placing my order and patiently waiting for my Styrofoam take-out containers of goodness (I hear lines can be out the door in nicer weather). Everything was hot enough to eat as soon as I got it, but I stopped at the local Jewel-Osco to get Sour Cream for the Pierogi (Do this!). By the time I got home the food was still pretty warm, but I placed it in the microwave for a couple minutes and it was good to go. It blew my mind! If "The Old Country" had a taste then this would be it, and I was able to feed 3 people for $20. This is the real deal, so you HAVE to stop in on a Saturday and see what's cookin'. CASH ONLY TAKE-OUT ONLY

I just want to let every one know that this place inspired me to come up with the best pierogi recipe EVER and no, I'm not polish, if you couldn't tell. ;) Random Saturday morning, the only thing on my mind is getting to the Ukranian Church before 2 pm. These ladies got their ish together and know how to make things that sell! For $5 you can get a dozen pierogi and they will be some of the best you've ever had. I get two dozen...dinner for a week, holla! They have Kolachky, polish sausage and cabbage rolls. For full descriptive details see Ericka A's review....Oh yea. You can call your order ahead or wait about 10 minutes in line. Worth it though. Don't front, you know you want to get your butt over there and get some of that deliciousness.

I must admit I was a little hesitant to just drive up to a church to buy some food but there was a sign on the street inviting the public to come on in and do exactly that. There was also a sign on the door of the building directly across from the beautiful church building indicating where to enter for pierogies. Upon entering, there is a small counter displaying the short menu and pastries complete with an ATM in case you forgot to bring the only form of currency accepted here--cash. We ordered a little bit of almost everything including, potato, cheese, and sauerkraut pierogies, cabbage rolls, and kielbasa. I wanted to dig right in but there isn't a place you can just sit down and do this so we took our wonderful smelling food home and picked up some sour cream on the way. All the pierogies were fantastic and some of the best I've had. I'm far from a pierogie expert but I really enjoyed the fresh, delicate, chewy dough and flavorful fillings. This was the first time we've ever had cabbage rolls and we enjoyed them although I was slightly reminded of that canned Chef Boyardee tomato sauce smell and taste on the rolls. After I grilled up the kielbasa on my grill just enough to get the casing a little crisp for that snap, we dug in and really enjoyed the fresh smokey flavors and were thrilled to find that the kielbasa was not overly salty like the store bought variety. It was a lot of food and it set me back $27 but it was more than enough for two meals between two hungry people. Quantity AND quality both being present, I'm sure I'll be back for more in the future.

I grew up in the Ukrainian Village living in Portage Park for 30 yrs. We shared every plate and enjoyed a beautiful tour of Ukrainian comfort food done right. My Ukrainian mom who still cooks many traditional dishes (especially amazing varenyky/pierogi), so my daughter has grown up eating her Babcia's versions at home. She wanted to experience those same dishes prepared outside our family kitchen -- and this restaurant absolutely delivered. We shared the potato and cheese varenyky, holubtsi (cabbage rolls), mushroom broth soup, deruny (potato pancakes), and finished with sweet cheese crepes for dessert. Every single dish was delicious -- comforting, flavorful, and clearly made with care and tradition in mind. We ate until we were well beyond full and loved every bite. It felt like a taste of home, but also something new for the both of us, and that made the experience even more meaningful. This will absolutely be a must-revisit the next time we're back in Chicago visiting my mom. Highly recommend for anyone looking for authentic, soul-warming Ukrainian food. The dining area decor is very low key with decor found in most Ukrainian homes. Ukrainian dance music played bringing memories of weddings and dancing polkas.

But what other word exists for capably made Ukranian food? It is comfort food qua comfort food. The Platonic ideal of such. Savory in the extreme with more subtle notes of sweet and tart. On a previous trip to Chicago I lodged in a neighborhood bordering Ukraine Village. The proximity allowed me to sample a few establishments from the Ukraine. Things were fine; nothing extraordinary. On this more recent trip, I braved an excursion to the western suburbs, just for the Magic Jug. A food blogger named Hammond said it's the best. He did not lie. So it's in the occidental hinterlands of the city. And yet, my fellow diners were all from the Ukraine. So Ukranian, in fact, they all spoke the mother tongue. Besides that, the surroundings were not particularly Slavic. Minimalist pinewood interior makes you think moreso of Japan and less so of the Eastern Bloc. But anyhow. The chief feature that makes it so good is that everything is seasoned and flavored perfectly. The cooks - all from the Ukraine and all women - each possess palates with sniper rifle precision. The pelmeni (stuffed dumplings of similar appearance to tortellini). So beefy. So oniony. And finished with an herbaceous garlicky seasoning. The golubtsi (stuffed cabbage) at Magic Jug is without it's usually tomato sauce, giving you breathing room to really basque in the chicken broth in which the rice and veg were cooked. The effect: think a reconstructed chicken noodle soup - only with a fat dollop of smetana (sour cream). And the stewed liver. Really like a liver Diane. Don't be a wuss, eat the liver. Get it with mashed potatoes. I had mine with buckwheat so you don't have to. They also have several selections of house made bread. I ordered the one that's like a pull-apart brioche. Too full to appreciate it from on a visceral level, I was still able to note the craft involved. Within it, there contained the balancing act of well developed gluten and pliant interior.

It was time to try. We expected a bit of a hole in the wall and that's not what we found - we found a very nicely decorated and maintained restaurant with a lot of dark wood overtones - we were seated immediately and given an extensive menu. I ordered a Polish beer, and we ordered a Polish plate - kind of a combination sampler plate if you will - and a ground pork cutlet dinner. Now before we could say anything? Some bread showed up with a lovely but lightly flavored hummus type spread- we enjoyed it because it also came with a nice big half sized pickle. When the Polish plate came? OMG we had sauerkraut - we had sausage - we had some pierogies, and when the pork cutlet came out? It literally covered the entire plate and was resting on a bed of freshly mashed potatoes. We shared the Polish plate and we shared the extremely large pork cutlet. Now to be fair? We loved the Polish plate immensely - while the cutlet was nicely breaded, and the mashed potatoes were great? I'm not certain I could say that about the pork cutlet. There was nothing wrong with it. I think the flavor was fine, but it was not something that I would order again. It just wasn't my taste that's all. So would we come again? Yes. Yes we would!
