Gross! Truly nasty. It has been a long time since I have gone to St. Dymphna's my husband and I used to go quite often until "the incident" The service may have improved since then but we used to have to wait forever for anything. The service was really terrible unless you sat right at the bar. The wait staff was pretty but s l o w. The incident of which I speak still turns my stomach. We used to frequent the place for its delicious french onion soup. On my last visit, halfway through my soup, I lift my spoon to find a wet dead cockroach in my soup. MY HALFWAY EATEN SOUP! Barf. Clearly the kitchen is seriously lacking in cleanliness. I have never been back and never will. I miss strongbow on tap but just walking past the place makes me Nauseated. read more

Three stars cuz I never really got to experience the place. I walked in on St Patty's Day, well not so much walked as squeezed in through people very very slowly. I was going to meet friends, who I called as soon as I realized that it was going to be a serious process to get through more than 3 feet in. I didn't want to commit to the struggle without knowing where they were. Turns out, they had left because they couldn't get to the bar. However, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Second time visiting here and will be coming back. Great crowd and a great selection of Belgium beers (Delirium included). Located in the East Village, close to St. Marks, you would think that this would be raided by NYUer's but it's NOT. A nice controlled, mature crowd. Not really a bar to socialize in, as people seem to be catching up with their friends or on dates. Our waitress was a little preoccupied because her shift was ending and was rude to the table beside us but I don't like to include service into these reviews since we don't know how long she'll be working there. Ha! Plus, the last time, the service was just fine. My favorite part is the bathrooms. Lit by blacklights and loaded with chalk, you're allowed to express yourself as freely as you would like on any wall. read more

Very good crowd, friendly folks, I've tended to stop in after some shopping in the East Village, or for an early dinner. St. Dymphna's is great for low-key hanging out in a fun atmosphere. Everyone there is friendly, and moderate intemperance is tolerated. To wit: upon a recent visit I witnessed an attempted table dance before the imbiber's friends quickly assessed the wobbly table situation and ended the show, some people making out in the corner, and general bopping to the 70s rock music. (I decline to admit my role in any of the aforementioned activities). Additionally, the crowd seems to skew more 25+ than a lot of the LES/ E. Vil places, which just means I'm less likely to run into my NYU undergrad relatives: another boon. read more

A little understaffed, IMO, but otherwise a nice local bar which has the added convenience of being located right across from Crif Dogs. Initially, I was a little put off by the loudness of the music but I adjusted my volume accordingly. The bathroom was out of order on the night I went there-the atmosphere was chaotic, but it's forgivable considering the number of people clamoring for a drink that night-but the staff responded commendably. Overall, a quaint little bar that I'd return to. My one recommendation would be to ease up on the national flags. Seeing the name of the bar is always an advantage for potential patrons. read more

st dymphas is a great little neighborhood pub. it's got decent food and resonable prices on drinks, etc. the vibe is always mellow. and it tends to be amazingly douche-free everytime i've stopped in. $3 pints is a great happy hour and the irish breakfast certainly hits the spot when the mood strikes. great joint, friendly staff, and a vibe that is is jusssst right. read more

As usual lately, I got lost on the way, and when I called information they had no record. I began to doubt the existence of St. Dymphna's and my sanity. The latter is still in question, but St. Dymphna's is as real as Mr. Snuffleupagus. A lively Irish bar with a small outdoor garden, and favorites like Guinness and Bass on tap. Walking by numerous times, we took a break from our buzzfeed top 31 winter meals list and stopped for a pit stop. A nice selection of beer on tap from all over Europe and the States. So I am going to give you the bad news first. The food here is medicore at best. The St. Dymphna's pie was AWFUL. I mean really really AWFUL. It was the manifestation of any idea I ever had about prison food and airplane food having a baby. However, my boyfriend's burger was average, but you can't really mess up a burger, though. On the positive side, good beers on tap, and the bartenders & waitresses were all quite sweet. I would come here for a Tuesday night drink as I liked the unpretentious atmosphere for weekday adventures, but never again to eat. Never. read more

YEA! Come here for happy hour from 4-7pm or brunch until 4pm. But, if you are waiting for a reservation at PDT, this is the place to enjoy some world-class beers in the interim! From Duvel to Kronenbourg, you'll definitely find your bit on their chalk-board bar menu. For private space, loop around the bar for an enclosed (and well-heated) nook or step outside to the patio for some fresh air. I'm sure next time I'll stop by for the highly-lauded and freshest pint of Guinness in the East Village, some potato skins, and a taste of Dublin that will be a pleasant treat for any Manhattan cosmopolite... that's right: YOU! What a great bar! Came here because Bua across the street was way too packed and my friend and I wanted to go somewhere where we could actually sit down. We got there just in time to get 2 seats at the bar. The bartender was super friendly AND they have very reasonably priced bottles. I had a bottle of prosecco that cost $25, and my friend had a bottle of wine priced at $24. We sat at the bar and nobody rushed us out of there (on a Friday night)! Minimal but authentic decor and Irish comfort food are the main attractions at this East Village pub. A friendly bartender, a perfectly pulled Guinness, and a plate of very decent fish and chips (though not the best in the Village - try Telephone Bar's take on the dish) make this bar a welcome shelter from the ceaseless cuterification of Avenue A. One of my favorite bars for years. This is place is what you see what you get. Great pint specials on weekend afternoons. Where else could you get a nice pint of Kronenbourg for 3 dollars? The breakfast is better than average but sometimes take a long time. This place hasn't changed for years and that's one of its best features. WHY is the music so loud? During the day. Seriously. Who needs the music that. Fu*#+ng. Loud. Would love to give this place 5 stars because it's an old favorite but it's changed. The service has gotten rude and slow. There are still some great team members here but they used to be all great- these days it's not a given. I have probably been to St Dyphna's 20 times. I live across the street so it's my go-to spot. I'm vegetarian so I always get their quinoa and tofu or tempeh dish and my husband always gets the veggie burger. Normally it's pretty good and the atmosphere in the restaurant is casual and fun. I don't know what the heck happened when I went last week but I got the quinoa/tofu dish I normally get and it was TERRIBLE.. The tofu was barely cooked, lacked marinade and was just inedible. New chef? Not sure. I will give it another try but if I get another meal like that again I will have to find another regular spot. read more

St. Dymphna's is fantastic! Both times I've been there I have encountered great service, fair prices, and friendly clientele, plus they have Strongbow on tap... SCORE! On a street where it's possible to pay $12 per beer (no joke...) St. Dymphna's is a fair $4-6. It's a welcoming establishment that is well lit and not overly crowded, though certainly never near empty. The tunes are a bit random, but most are classics most people can identify with. Everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly and had only complimentary things to say about the experience. I strongly recommend this bar for the prices and ambiance. Next time I'm in the area, I'll be sure to stop in again! read more

I'm not sure what to think of this place. I've been here twice and each time has been a completely different experience. The first time I went here was on a weekday winter evening for appetizers & drinks. The place was cozy, not overly loud and the service was attentive. Our party of 3 sat in the back and were pleasantly surprised by the tasty, simple entrees. As for my second time there, it was a complete mess. The music was loud and the crowd were even louder to speak over it. I could hardly hear myself and to top it off, the bartender was completely slammed by the high volume of patrons. Definitely one of my favorite places for a drink. It's dark, small, and sometimes the noise can overwhelm a conversation, but you can't help but have fun here. A great place to sit down for a pint - New York rarely gets pubbing right, and while the ambiance feels a little more French bistro than traditional British/Irish pub, this is a comfortable place that is designed for drinking around a table, which is a lost art in New York. My review is really 2 and a half stars. Its a good bar, with good beers, good service, and its a nice little cove that seems to not concern itself with trends or people that put on any pretentions. If you're looking for that kind of place, its great. Its been some of my friends favorite watering hole for a long time now, and the backyard is small and blah but its airy. This place has a very laid back, sometimes boisterous, but never ridiculous male heavy crowd with a few tables in the front and back to sit. Its just not very exciting for me to go to. I'll go to meet friends, or to have a pint or two, but the same old thing every week gets really, really boring. Now I only come in on occasion. The music is pretty decent I must say. I just think I overloaded on it a couple years back and its only a stop once in a blue moon for me. read more

I went here for brunch/lunch and was surprised by the menu. It wasn't typical pub food, but a mix of lunch/brunch specials like Irish breakfast, eggs benedict, omelets, French onion soup, fried calamari. I got a build-your-own omelet and it was so fresh and good. I really enjoyed it. The staff is friendly too, and the atmosphere is cute. read more
