A rock solid savior for the weary, ripe with ample flowing choice taps, select and solid tracks and the kinds of conversation you only tend to hear in places that register with staying power. Yep, St. Dymphna's, named for the apparent patron saint of "those who suffer from mental illnesses and nervous system disorders, epileptics, mental health professionals, happy families, incest victims, and runaways" (according to Wikipedia, and good lord, people), this was an absolute terrific bar that were I local would be lining the walls with big stacks of whatever money (or various colorful paper) i had at the time, were I only more local more regularly. I heard an interesting conversation here, swear to St. Dymphna, that really got me to thinking. Ultimately it was about how whistling seems to primarily have manifested itself as a male predominant pursuit, and when the guy sitting at the bar posed that thought to the female bartender carelessly whistling to herself, it gave her pause. She wondered aloud when, in fact, was the last time that she'd heard a woman whistle. They both ended up admitting that frankly it doesn't happen very often (I'm not sure if the phrase 'not often enough' entered, but that's the way I like to recall it), and the chat ended with a friendly chuckle. Whereupon the bartender went right back to whistling, as if time dialed back here. As I suppose it often does. read more

Last Friday night I was being sexually harassed by a man while ordering a drink. He kept grabbing my ass and body after I told him repeatedly to stop. The main bartender (white, tall, gray hair) knew it was happening and when I tried to tell him he cut me off and said, "Yeah, but what can you do about it?" in an excessively obnoxious manner. He smiled. I have bartended in dozens of bars in NYC and you can, at the very least, both talk to someone about their behavior or ask them to leave if they are assaulting a customer. The other bartender was kinder and gave me a glass of water to throw in the assaulter's face. It is not okay to have men harassing or assaulting women at your bar and the staff do nothing and laugh. read more

I was bar hopping with friends here on a Saturday night. This bar isn't the kind of place I would walk into by myself, but there were good happy hour specials. There were five of us, and we found a table with little problem. 20 oz. beers were $4 during happy hour, which was cool. Service was friendly but a bit slow. The vibe was kind of non-existent. It was fine to come and hang out, but it was really loud. Not quite my scene. I think this was the bar with the chalk in the bathrooms. There are black walls and chalk so that you can draw pictures and write whatever you feel like. But I couldn't help but wonder how many people washed their hands first... read more

We went to the bar to get our happy hour beer on tap. I'm sorry that I'm one of those people who just don't carry cash. I ordered a drink and whipped out my CC and opted to close my tab. Everywhere I've traveled, I've managed to find myself in an Irish pub that reminds me of home. St. Dymphna's served me well in this respect. A great pub atmosphere, a well-maintained wooden bar top with welcoming bartenders and staff. The Guinness could've been a little less cold, but it was hot enough outside that it actually hit the spot in the most perfect sense of the word. The space is narrow, so you're going to be up in everyone's business whether you like it or not. During my stay, I had one couple use me as a wall/bed while they were making out at the bar while another guy had me playing straight man in his attempt to seal the deal with a girl he was with. Since I was enjoying myself too much, I didn't mind either situation happening. Good times. read more

St. Dymphna's is my local pub. I like the relaxed atmosphere and unpretentious, "real people" crowd who frequent the place. St. Dymphna's is as down-to-earth as a pub gets in NYC. Anyone who calls St. Dymphna's a hipster bar has never been to a real hipster bar. (Search "Williamsburg.") The people who frequent St. Dymphna's tend to be over 30 years old. Although I love the inviting atmosphere and friendly staff, it's the $3 pints at happy hour, which is daily from noon to 7 p.m., that keep me a loyal patron. I don't know of a better happy hour in the East Village. The pub usually has a good array of beers on tap: Stella, Lighthouse, Guinness, Goosehead, Boddington's, Kirin, etc. The manager likes to offer local brews on tap on occasion. The pub also serves food, and although I've happily eaten there many times, I'm not sure I would recommend going there JUST for the food. I eat there because I've had too much beer and need to eat. You know what I'm sayin'? The food is acceptable and fills the void, but there are many really great restaurants steps away from the pub that offer finer fare if you're a discerning eater. The local. Would be a destination though if I didn't live around the corner. So friendly, no-fuss, great bartenders any day or night. Best happy hour (and prices overall) around but be warned, you'll end up staying long past 8pm. Great for a quiet drink but gets quite busy. We spent New Year's Eve here and it was the best one we ever had. Laid-back vibe, cozy, fantastic food and service and, above all - you as the customer are treated well and with respect here. Hot mulled alcoholic cider and festive lights on the walls, if only there were a few more tables in here, then me and my jolly group wouldn't have had to stand for so long! Good thing you can sip on wine while you search for somewhere to sit in this pretty small bar! But once you find a table, even if you have to sit on a tall tall stool at a short short table, when everyone else in your group is in short short chairs at a short short table, which just kind of feels a little bit awkward, this bar feels pretty homey! And drink prices aren't too bad either! Especially for a NYC bar. This place doesn't look like much on the outside, and it definitely won't make you feel like you went anywhere super special and exciting in manhattan, but it is a place where you can actually afford more than one drink, and a place you don't have to worry about dressing up for either! I love this bar. It's dark, it's a dive, and it's an awesome place to have a few drinks with friends. It's very casual - not one of those fancy bars where you feel awkward in jeans. They have a great DJ/playlist who plays a variety of new and old music that everyone can sing along to. The mixed drinks are delicious, and they have a nice selection of beers on tap. I'm SO mad that a friend of mine got kicked out of a bar by the owner because english fans were butthurt from the WC semifinals. 4 Stars for: That homey feeling. I nearly always come here if I'm in the area. I don't know that I'd go out of my way and make it a destination for the night, but if I feel like avoiding a scene and just drinking some good beer on a comfy bar stool without some douchebag elbowing me to get to the bar or hitting on me, then this is often where I head. They have good background music usually, courtesy of the bartender's ipod, and one bartender in particular always makes me feel like I have a new friend, even though I don't frequent the place often enough for him to really remember me. They're nice about buybacks if you stay long enough, and they have a decent happy hour for beers too. If you're a cocktail kinda person, this isn't the place to go, but duh it's a friggin Scottish pub, why would you go there for cocktails? They have a funky little patio out back for smoking, with a heat lamp.. It feels like possibly the least pretentious, most non-judgmental place I've ever been, without being dirty and divey. What a fantastically cozy bar in this neck of the woods! I'm definitely a fan of St. Dymphna's and I'd make this my venue of choice if I want to grab a few drinks with friends around St. Marks -- and that's saying quite a lot. The selection is pretty extensive if you're a beer enthusiast. The owner is a great guy from California who really takes care of his customers. He has a pretty solid knowledge of the beers they serve and can recommend a good beer based on what you like. The ambiance is very comfortable and I sincerely enjoy just sitting in there and looking around. I'd definitely recommend it to anybody who is passing by this area looking for a place to keep a good night rolling. read more

My favorite pub in the world - and that includes Ireland! Excellent pub grub. The fries with curry sauce are second to none. Good cocktails; their Moscow Mule will sneak up on you. There is very little wait service, so we placed our orders at the bar. I came in because I was craving shepherd's pie and fish and chips, luckily they had both (which I ordered). The battered fish wasn't crispy at all, it was kind of mushy and oily. The fries tasted ok. The shepherd's pie tasted as if they used canned ground beef. I was not expecting to be wowed but this was below average. Most importantly my friend and I may have gotten sick from this food; we both woke the next morning with extreme nausea and, well, needed to spend lots of time in the lavatory. St Dymphna's is like an old friend, it has quirks but its pretty tried and true. Sometimes it's annoying and you find yourself wondering why you continue staying in touch. But mostly it's fun and you find yourself reminded why you come back time and time again. Sometimes, on very special weekend nights you'll find yourself in St. Dymphna's with just the right crowd and the DJ plays just the right songs and you'll remind yourself why you fell in love in the first place. There have been crazy evenings when people are having group singalongs along to oldies music and dancing on chairs and the booths. Other nights are more low-key where the tables and chairs are used appropriately. While in proximity to bars which attract the fist-bumping, shot-taking, muscle-shirt-wearing crowd, St. Dymphna's manages to slip under the radar and attract a more laid-back crowd. The DJ that sometimes "spins" here sits in the corner of the bar, hunched over his iPad. In the few times I've felt brave enough to venture up and make a request, he'll either pretend not to hear you, nod slightly, or look at you and roll his eyes like you've just requested the lamest song or artist ever (wait, when did Elton John stop being cool? Anyone?). The beer selection here is solid and they offer both pear and apple Magner's cider which is a great alternative for when you feel like you're tired of brews. The prices are reasonable and the bartenders are always super accommodating, even when they get busy. The dinner food is good, solid Irish fare and is great accompanied by happy hour-priced drinks. read more

Although I am a little upset that they have raised their happy hour prices to $4 a pint, I still love St. Dymphna's for their large glasses of beer and the consistently friendly service from the bartenders. I've never had a bartender here be even a bit chilly or inattentive, even when they are really busy. I love that they have Strongbow on tap, it makes my tummy happy! A huge plus for me is that the TVs are rarely on unless there's some huge game. It's an excellent place to get a few pints and read a book or the paper. The food is basically good but I rarely eat here when there are so many other options in the neighborhood. I do like their hot dogs and the Irish breakfast if I am in the mood to eat. read more

I watched the HUGE upset here-it really belongs to Tom Brady! This was a great pub minus the annoying old a-hole frat boy mouthing off about the NY Giants. They have Kirin on draft, which OF COURSE I ordered! As far as pub food goes-this place is gourmet :) We ordered the Dymphna's Pie-sooo good with the puff pastry on top and light cream sauce. It came with veggies and deeeeeeliciousssss mashers too! Also ordered the Fish & Chips-good but not as good as SF or HMB. We finished with the Bailey's Irish Cream Chocolate Cake with raspberry sauce and vanilla ice cream-YUM! This place is cozy and the staff here is nice. My only complaint would be that the benches against the wall are not wide enough. Maybe my butts too big, but after watching the NY Giants get lucky for 4 hours, your ass begins to hurt :( Good place for comfy food and drinks. read more

Stepped in here as a way to get away from the crazy Santas on Santacon and I felt like I was back in my old Irish neighborhood in the Bronx. Food smelled great but as we had just eaten, we didn't order. I will have to come back and try their Irish breakfast. We had two beers each and they were both served in a traditional 20 oz pint, none of those American 16oz pints. And they were $4 a piece because of happy hour! Love it. After having an Indian dinner nearby, my two ladies and I popped in here for a drink as it looked relatively empty. Upon stepping in, I immediately liked it! This little bar has character. Yellow walls give it a bright and cheery feeling. Friendly bartender. There was also a guy walking around, making sure everyone was happy with their drinks. Plenty of seating, both in the front and back area. Both Magners Cider AND Magners Pear Cider as available ($7). Mixed crowd - we sat next to a couple where the lady was still in her nurse outfit. Music in the background didn't have us shouting across the table. The inside of the loo is in chalk paint so you can write whatever you want with the provided chalk hanging on the back of the door! A local pub with a good neighborhood feel. Love the menu of cocktails with a wide variety at good prices. I can't remember the drink I had but I think it was called something-icetea. Still my home sweet pub... but wanted to let you all know that Raquel has revamped the menu (both for breakfast and lunch/dinner). I tried the new cobb salad last night and am enthralled! I just LOVE salads made with arugula. Lots of new "small plates" that are great for when you want a smaller snack at a pub (including coucous with roasted vegetables (although a bit salty, I found), a rasher sandwich, bangers and mash). Taco Tuesdays features Brandy's mom's recipe, and I have to say, they are surprisingly filling and hearty (I recommend the chicken). So much new food to try! Don't worry - many of our old favorites are still there (chips with curry, best burgers with the cheese of your choice, shepherd's pie, etc.), but now more vegetarian options that are tasty and healthy! Other recent changes - the bathrooms have been redone so that you can chalk up your own graffiti, and the bar stools have been re-upholstered (as much as I hate change, I'm all up for that one!). Also still MORE beers on tap and the wines offered are great (including prosecco!). Raquel has also completely revamped the backyard - it is beautifully enclosed, amazingly warm even when it's frightfully cold out, AND has a sweet fireplace (an electric one - as Baker (another of the great bartenders) says - the kind drunk people can't get burned on). I have a new love, and his name is Captain Lawrence Smoked Porter. I'd never heard of Captain Lawrence before coming here, and it's like the heavens aligned when I asked what type of beer it is. Mmm smoked porter. I came here with a group for happy hour on a Thursday night. Knowing it's an Irish pub (with a happy hour), I was expecting a sloppy, stereotypically Irish place - old beat up wood floors and counters reeking of beer with obnoxious college guys and girls who think that just by drinking Guinness and doing Irish car bombs they are in truly in touch with their Irish roots. The atmosphere was in fact the exact opposite. A nice setup of tables (the space is much more conducive to sitting at a table to relax with your friends rather than circulate around and mingle/meet people). It's an ideal first date location. There are some lights strung along the bar and the entire place looks freshly painted with soft colors. I was surprised by how *nice* the place really is, especially given the college/East Village location. Come for the porter, stay for the chalk in the bathroom. read more

Anyplace with Magners on tap instantly makes me joyous, so I admit this review may be a bit biased. Really lovely wee pub with both indoor and outdoor seating. Super friendly staff. The food is great - I had the Shepherd's Pie (at first it seemed too loose, but I wound up eating the whole thing, so that tells you something), and my partner had a steak sandwich, which was lovely. I hear they have the best Irish Breakfast around (Mr. Dennehy's currently holds the title in my mind as of now), but will definitely be back to take them up on that challenge. read more

Hi new favorite bar...even though you are super far away. This gem is hidden in the streets of the east village but is great. We stopped by after dinner one night, I would feel just as comfortable here if I was in sweats or all dressed up. They have interesting mixed drinks and a good beer selection. I'm sorry, but the place reeked of rotten foot smell when we went there. I went in to use the WC, my friends stayed outside because the smell was omnipresent. After I did my business, we left. That being said, I hope to get down there again one day in the future, when the stank of work boot rot will hopefully be non-existent. I don't mind Musty Bar Smell, but Big Foot Funk is not that palatable. I *really* want to love this bar. St. Dymphna is my patroness, because Lord knows I'm a loonie. read more

This place is great for brunch. The menu isn't super extensive but all I wanted was a full Irish breakfast (perfect if you're doing Keto). Their full Irish breakfast is excellent and just $12 (most places in the area charge $17 and up). Strong coffee too. The bartender Sofia was lovely and the service was great even though it appeared to be just her. We've come here for drinks in the evening before as well and it's nice. Warning - It can get pretty busy on weekend nights. read more
