I celebrated Valentines Day here with my boyfriend and we had a really nice experience overall! The only gripe I had during the evening was that St Jack was behind on their reservations. I understand that it gets really busy on Valentines Day, but once my boyfriend and I arrived, there were at least 8 other couples waiting around in the doorway to be seated. The hostess was of course apologetic and appreciated our patience, but my boyfriend and I were just hungry :( We had a 9:15 pm reservation and didn't get seated around 9:45 or so.
Aside from this hiccup, I had a wonderful experience at St Jack. For Valentines Day, they were offering a four course meal (small starter, appetizer, main entree, and dessert) for $70. We opted in for the additional wine pairings ($30). *See the pictures below if you'd like to see the whole menu.*
We started off our meal with a small (like, 4 sips if you're trying to drink it slowly) chilled cucumber soup. I wouldn't necessarily call this a full small starter, but I liked how the buttermilk, pickled onion, and dill flavors played off of each other. It was really well balanced. After this, we were given a truffled potato and porcini croquette with cheddar fondue. I absolutely love croquettes and this one was done right. It was perfectly crispy on the outside, even with the cheese fondue surrounding it on the dish. My boyfriend joked that they should have at least given us two each (instead of two to share) just cause they were so good!
For my appetizer, I chose the steak tartare. I never tried steak tartare before and oh man I'm in love. I love the buttery yet chewy texture of it and a simple seasoning of salt and pepper on it to highlight all of its splendor. I believe they also put a mixture of anchovy and caesar dressing on the top, which worked really well and nicely coated the meat. Cured olives added some extra salt to the dish, which I personally enjoyed, but my boyfriend mentioned he could do without them. If I had to choose a dish of the night, I'd pick this one. It was a wonderful culinary experience!
* Wine pairing: At the recommendation of our waiter/the sommelier, I got a glass of rosé wine with my appetizer. I enjoyed the fruitiness of the rosé and how it refreshed my palette from the richness of the steak tartare.
For my main entree, I chose the beef cheek bourgignon on a bed of creamy polenta. Although they gave us a knife to cut the beef cheek with, it wasn't really needed. The beef cheek was so juicy and tender enough for me to just use my fork to pull it apart. I also loved how the vegetables (carrots, caramelized onions, and braised celery) added a bit of tanginess to the dish. Normally, vegetables just sit on top of a dish and don't add much, but these veggies definitely stood out and helped to round out the dish. The polenta was nice and creamy as expected and went perfectly with the beef cheek.
* Wine pairing: My dish came with a wonderful pinot noir. I normally stay away from red wine, but this paired perfectly with the beef cheek. This was shockingly my favorite wine of the night!
For dessert, my boyfriend and I shared two different tarts (a salted caramel & chocolate tart with vanilla chantilly and a passionfruit meringue tart). My boyfriend thought the salted caramel & chocolate tart was way too rich, but I enjoyed it. It was, however, really sweet, which made me enjoy the more subdued flavors of the passionfruit meringue tart.
* Wine pairing: We shared two glasses of dessert wine (a red one and a white one). Dessert wines are so sweet, and I'm not sure if it was the best pairing with the tarts since they were really sweet. I think I would have preferred a more tart wine to counterbalance the sweetness, but both of the dessert wines were high quality and flavorful.
Service was good (though it did take a little bit to get our plates bussed for one of the services) and the ambiance is classy. Unlike other fancy places where you can barely see your dining partner/your food, St Jack is well lit while still maintaining a romantic atmosphere. read more
