I do not tend to visit the same restaurant twice, when traveling. For Southpark, however, the food was so good, I did not make it past the appetizer menu on my first trip, so I had to go again. Also, in spite of being slammed (there were more than 50 drinks lined up on the bar, at one point), the staff was friendly and efficient. When traveling, I always look for fresh seafood, and when I was in Portland, I got directed to try this place. I like to freestyle when I travel, but I also like some structure, so I made a reservation to ensure no delays prior to attending a concert not too far away. We decided on a half dozen Oysters as we wanted to try all 3 varietys. They split it off for us with 2 separate plates and talked about each of the ones we were going to have. We also had the Salmon Tartare and the Dungenous crab roll filled with plenty of crab and not filler! We also had the Chicory Salad with fried oysters that they also split for us & the Chicory Salad & the Manila claims... also really good. The chowder has gnocchi in it, which he said was not unpleasant but he wasn't sure it added to the soup and he wasn't thrilled with the mussels that were in the chowder as well. We started with the three-oyster sampler ($12) and unfortunately the oysters were tiny and lacked flavor. Definitely not a strong start. Next was the shrimp cocktail ($16) which was pretty decent -- nothing memorable but solid. For my entrée I ordered the Dungeness crab roll ($26) -- basically a crab version of a lobster roll. It actually tasted good, but it was absolutely tiny. Maybe three-and-a-half to four inches long at best, and just not enough food to justify the price. We also ordered the fish and chips ($21) which that night was cod, and this ended up being the highlight of the meal. The fish was fresh, perfectly fried with the right amount of breading, and came with tasty coleslaw and decent fries. Easily the best thing we had. Drinks were Diet Cokes ($8 total). Overall the place looks nice and runs smoothly, but most of the food was pretty average and the portions -- especially for the price -- were disappointing. I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back. If I did return, I'd probably just order the fish again and try something different. read more

We made a reservation online and only counter seating was available, but when we arrived, they were able to seat us at a table--such a nice surprise! We ordered the fish and chips, but asked to sub a salad for the fries. The server said he'd check, and they were able to do it, though we weren't told about the extra $4 charge. Thankfully, our server fixed the issue and brought out a properly portioned cup with gnocchi this time. Our first dinner in Portland and since we live in Colorado, of course we want fish! We walked to Southpark from our hotel and accidentally went in the back entrance to the bar. The bartender greeted and welcomed us and then let us know to go up front and check in. We did and were seated immediately. The restaurant is light and not cramped which I enjoyed! Our server was incredible with suggestions and also very friendly and efficient without being overbearing. We ordered cocktails and mine was absolutely divine - just what I wanted! Refreshing, not too sweet, and beautiful. I ordered the Love Language - and it definitely spoke mine! We ended up ordering two items to share: spicy shrimp and grits and the Cioppino. Both were fabulous celebrations on the palate. The grits were creamy and delicious, the shrimp cooked perfectly. The Cioppino had a variety of fish with chunky bits of tomato and other vegetables in the sauce. The fish and seafood were light, flaky, tender, hot and it all went together fabulously. I would order both dishes again. For dessert, I had a dessert wine and my husband had the salted caramel gelato. Both were worth the calories! After making our way to the new Portland Art Museum, we were lucky to get a table at the very end of the happy hour. I wish I knew what it was called so I could recommend it, alas, I have no recollection. We decided to split a few small plates, with the salmon tartare, brussels sprouts, and fries. I was impressed by each item, with perfect preparation and more to enjoy. This was a great dinner from start to finish! We sat in a booth right by the bar... our table was really awkward and not comfortable. Wait staff had to reach over after stepping up to the platform - was weird for everyone! The mocktails were delish, oysters and shrimp cocktail exactly what you would like them to be. The focaccia was lovely with a nice salt and pepper crust. Had a nice cheese plate - nothing that knocked my socks off and we had to ask for more crackers but it was very nice! The entrees were where it's at... beautiful wild caught king salmon, delicious monkfish, really yummy clam pasta, and my bay shrimp salad was really delicious with a very herb-y and apple finish that I quite liked. The desserts were also standouts, with the double chocolate cream puffs, taking the cake (see what I did there?) It was a pretty pricey affair and I'm not sure this is a must-return. The garlic bread was addictively delicious, and the spicy shrimp was phenomenal. My salad was great too! Though I couldn't sit at a regular table due to the holiday rush, the staff was incredibly accommodating and seated me near the bar. Our waiter, Luke, was beyond outstanding! I had the small chicory salad today which was quite sumptuous. I would probably get the dressing on the side in the future since there was just a bit too much for me. I so wanted to like this place... and it started off well. But when you REQUIRE a 20% gratuity... the service best be worth that. We came in just for oysters-- when we arrived the host was fantastic-- he caught on that it was someone in our party's birthday and presented a card when he sat us at the table. The oysters were fantastic-- but the rest of the experience after the host was lacking. Once we were seated our server came over and didn't even acknowledge the card that was placed on the table-- which is a great way to establish customer service. He took our order for oysters only-- brought them which is was fine but then came back asked if wanted more oysters and then we had the check. If you want to charge guests an automatic gratuity-- the attention to details and making the experience personalized is a must. I mentioned it to another staff member (someone in a collared printed shirt) and was told yes all checks get it automatically. If someone asks about it-- then perhaps a follow up question should be: was there something wrong? Or can I address anything? Sadly, it was the closest restaurant to our hotel with oysters. I have never in my life had such incredible oysters. They were buttery and delicious, and I wish I could live in that moment forever! The halibut was also incredible, with the lime crema being a top-notch pairing. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the sturgeon, and the mushrooms that accompanied his dish were super tasty. Dessert was the sweet corn cheesecake, which was surprisingly tangy (I know cheesecake tends to be tangy ) with a blueberry sauce and sorbet. I took my retired friend who lives downtown Portland to Southpark Seafood. I had been there many times and thought that maybe she needed to experience it, in order to tell her other retired friends in the neighborhood where to dine. We arrived at about 4:45 PM, just in time to order before happy hour ended at 5 PM. I had ordered the bubbles and bi-valve to start. Minutes later, we ordered our entrées, but I still hadn't received my oysters (which was supposed to come with my glass of bubbles). Our entrée arrived very quickly, and I asked our server/bartender if my oysters were coming. He apologized and ran to check on them and he brought them right out. Over the next hour, we continued to enjoy our meal and our beverages. When we asked for the check, we were surprised to see that a 20% gratuity was added to the total of the bill, but not as a suggestion, instead, as an imposed 20%, which could not be adjusted. My friend who was a former attorney and restaurant owner herself, said that this was wrong and that she was going to decide what the tip should be since she was buying us dinner. Her and I discussed it, and I told her that we could charge just the actual ordered items on her credit card, but to let me pay the tip with cash. I work in the service industry myself, and I explained to her that I can appreciate how the servers appreciate not being stiffed on a tip, because I'm sure it happens occasionally. I said that cash would be better anyway. She agreed to that and I asked our bartender/server if he would do that; just charge the total of the bill (pre-tip), and I will leave the tip in cash. Well, some other server came over and rang up the bill and handed it to us with the imposed 20% tip total on to my friend's credit card. My friend was not happy about this and let this server know that what he did was not right. Instead of asking us how we could come to an agreement to fix this, he explained the obvious about the imposed 20% tip, and that "it needed to be paid"...and he told her she "needed to tone down". After taking a close look at the bill, they also charge a 2.5% surcharge for the credit card processing fee. Some things that I have learned about my evening at Southpark: 1. Southpark should not be hiring people who don't know how to work in the service industry. 2. Southpark needs to reconsider this 20% mandatory/imposed tipping practice. 3. I will no longer be recommending Southpark Seafood Restaurant to any of my friends or clients. read more

Light blues music playing in the background. Service was really good. The hostess and my waitress Kayla were very nice. She brought a bottle of water and since I drink so much water, she stopped by multiple times to refill my glass. I got the clam chowder and I was glad it came with actual clams and it was delicious!
