Of course always a line but surprisingly it moved faster than most of the time . "The pride of Kaimuki" St Louis Drive Inn is one of the last "original" drive ins on Oahu. If you went back in time, say 50 years ago, physically, it would be very similar then, to what you saw today. The selections and offerings are pretty much the same, the major difference being the pricing. After 50 years, there's bound to be a price increase, right? But compared to similar places, the pricing is quite reasonable. But- old favorites are still available, their fresh mahi and roast pork plates are favorites, the student special bbq burgers with fries and a drink are nostalgic specials that anyone who has been there would appreciate. A special that always draws in the crowds are the breakfast specials which is priced right and includes a drink of your choice. The breakfast special runs from opening time to 9am on weekdays, till 10am weekends. I would give this place a solid 3.5. The food was just ok, but I got a good value. We ordered a Japanese Plate Deluxe $15.50, but it was on special for $13.50. We also purchased a Mochiko Chicken Plate $12.50 and a large Lilikoi drink $3.50. The Japanese Plate Deluxe contained mochiko chicken, teri beef, two shrimp tempura, six ahi sashimi, salad and rice. The rice was dry. The mochiko chicken was dry and hard. It wasn't battered enough and they give huge pieces that aren't cut up. The ahi sashimi on the other hand was so good. It was so fresh and firm. They even gave a wasabi shoyu sauce for dipping. If you eat sashimi a lot you would know that this is a great deal. Service....the lack of. At the receiving end of the horrible attitude from one of the ladies was unwarranted. If you come here enough, there's several ladies behind the counter/cashier. And there's that one, that one certain lady that takes her time before acknowledging you, doing everything else while you're the only one in line and still make you wait a bit. Unfriendly and never smiles. It is what it is. We've been coming here for years and usually it's just for the breakfast special. Once a month and when school in session then sometimes almost once a week. Is it the best tasting food? No, but the menu is simple and all one needs is a basic breakfast special (portugese sausages, eggs and rice, and a drink). Sometimes the rice is dry and hard or the eggs have shell bits hiding inside..and yet I still come back. Years ago it was under $5 and prices have gone up since to almost $8 and we keep coming back to support a local business that's been here before I was even born. And here we are today, that same certain lady behind the counter and it's 8am in the morning. Was she having a bad morning that she decided to take it out on us? I don't care about the unsmiling non-greeting but the hostile attitude was very unbecoming and to representing a business this way is sad. Today, ordered the same breakfast special #2 like always and when she handed the drinks. There were splatter soda dots on the lid and cup. Asked for napkins to wipe it clean and as she was about to hand over the rag that was sitting on the counter, we politely asked for napkins instead. Was that same rag used to wipe the counter or meant to wipe cups only, I wouldn't know but I do see that rag is stained. She grabbed a bunch of napkins and toss it on the counter in a huff. Explained to her why we preferred napkins and that only made her more upset. As we stood there watching her aggressively put our plates in the boxes and handed to us with a frown. We had a conference to attend today at Chaminade, so I took the opportunity to stop by St Louis Drive Inn for breakfast - even though a light breakfast would be waiting at the conference. It had been ages since my last visit, but I'm pretty sure I recognized the woman behind the counter. I was happy to see prices still much lower than most other places - old-school food at old-school prices. I ordered #1: fried rice, BBQ hot dog, one egg, and a small coffee (included). I would be remiss if I didn't update my previous one-star review of St. Louis Drive-Inn. I was driving home on Waialae Avenue and slowed at the intersection for the red light. I saw that there were only four people near the order counter so I drove into the lot. I recall seeing the restaurant closed a few months ago while they were re-paving the parking lot. There are a dozen parking spaces plus one ADA stall. I was taken aback because 8 of the 13 parking stalls were occupied. Why were so many parking stalls occupied if only 4 people were near the order counter and one of them was a child? Ah, I didn't see the 5 people eating at the six plastic tables on the right. When I went up to the order window on the left, a woman stuck her head out from the right window and asked what I wanted. Wow, quick service compared to last time. She took my order yet still, it took about 12 minutes for me to get my food. To be fair the seafood bento I ordered had a lot of different items which were cooked from scratch since they were all still warm when I got home and ate. So 12 minutes may be warranted. The food is always good but now that they have modified the ordering process, St. Louis Drive Inn has earned my respect. read more

I love the local, old school vibe at this place. Small parking lot but usually fast so there's space. They have a few tables to eat at in the front. I went here early one morning and while they do have breakfast, I was in the mood for a bbq burger. It was charbroiled and fresh with lettuce and mayo. The okazuya/deli is also super reasonable but a long wait as they can only help one customer at a time and it's cash only. This place was almost our daily spots for breakfast and lunch about 18 years ago. I haven't been here since my workplace was relocated. I'd say, it's been a good 8 years. I dropped off a friend so I decided to grab breakfast here. The lady who took my order was nice. We said our morning greetings to each other. I ordered Vienna Sausage with over medium eggs & white rice. This was $6.80 for the plate before tax. The second plate I got was Portuguese sausage, scrambled eggs & white rice. I also got a free small Green River drink. The plate came out to $7.50 before tax. I got a side of French toast for $4.00 before tax. My total all together was $20.21 with tax. This is super cheap. It would cost me twice more if I got these from another breakfast place. There is parking stalls or find a street parking. You can find them across Saint Louis School and Chaminade University. There's a few tables and chairs you can use but it's not so clean. Probably best to eat in your car or go to a near park or eat at work or home, wherever you're heading to. Yowza! Where have you been all my life? A person - me - can incredibly live in the area of a restaurant and never ever think to try it or try it and never again. What's going on? Lol So, one day I realized that I was almost home needing something good to eat. I remember spotting a line to this place where previously I would not want to wait in any line, I've learned through Yelping that lines are indeed a very good sign! My first few times as a college student didn't really make a mark on me. I tried the seafood bentos but probably just didn't find the right ones. Now as an adult innerstanding (new word) more about food and tastes, I decided to order the Fresh Mahi Mahi Plate. What a winner! The three side-by-side fillets are juicy tender and "sweet". The flavor of the fish is subtle but just so delectable. I thoroughly enjoy this plate. For all plates, I always order no tartar sauce (I don't eat mayo), no salad dressing (bc I don't eat mayo), and been trying to remember no utensils too. It wasn't long before I began to think about trying other plates as I queried others standing in line with me what their favs have been. In speaking with the ordering person Sherry, I was quite impressed that they only use Olive Oil to cook (rather than toxic vegetable oil). What a plus! Since trying the Mahi plate numerous times, I expanded my repertoire to include Roast Turkey, Beef Curry, Roast Beef, Mushroom Chicken, Fresh Corned Beef and Cabbage, and sometimes I need to get a fill of overly cooked (burnt!) french fries. Many of these plates are specials of the day that had piqued my interest when I kept seeing them sell out. Or when I attempter to order one only to discover that the person before me had secured the last available plate. Plates I've tried so far: 5 - Fresh Mahi Mahi plate - I'm always impressed by the "simple" artistry that goes into the construction of this plate. I do like the flavor best when the fish is more browned. 5 - * Roast Turkey plate - The Roast Turkey contains pieces of turkey. You can order dark meat and they will do their best to add in this preference. Usually served before Thanksgiving. You can pay for and place an order to reserve your plate! 5 - * Beef Curry - If you like curry, this is satisfying. Just like homemade goodness made by grandma! 5 - * Mushroom Chicken - Pieces of chicken in a clear gravy. My Grandmother in law used to make a version of this dish and the taste of the one here reminds me of this yummy goodness. 5 - * Roast Beef - Pieces of meat covered in a clear gravy, the taste is delectable. 4 - * Fresh Corned Beef and Cabbage - Well, the meat was not so soft but the taste was all there. 5 - French fries - I try not to eat these but when I do, I like them brown and burnt! * = Specials of the day that sell out PRICING - What is really great are the prices. There is always a line I suspect bc of this (ppl in line make mention of this) and the great quality foods served here. PHONE ORDERS - If you want to ensure that what you are craving will not sell out, you can call to place an order ahead of time. If they are really swamped (they might not be able to answer the phone), you will just have to drive down and wait in line. I was shocked and intrigued with the Japanese Plate and Japanese Plate Deluxe. Sashimi in a bento box?! Waaah? I immediately knew I had to try it! The Japanese Deluxe Plate is $13 which is sooo reasonable! It comes with TWO shrimp tempura, teri beef, mochiko chicken, ~5 pieces of ahi sashimi, rice, and toss salad. Everything is flavorful and tender, the sashimi is FRESH, and everything is made to order. Since everything is made to order, be prepared to wait a while even if there's little to no line. The 2 older ladies are very sweet and take orders as well as help cook and pack the food. Trust me, it's worth the wait! Not only are their prices reasonable for plate lunches but, being across from both Saint Louis and Chaminade, they have cheap bentos, breakfast bentos, and student specials! I've come here many times over the years, but what really draws me here is the local style Seafood Bento! For a little over $10 bucks (more like $13.09 to be exact), you can get some ono comfort eats of the Seafood Bento that comprises of - Grilled Salmon, Teri Ahi, Shrimp Tempura, Scallop, Eggroll, Ume, Konbu, Furikake, over Rice. Ummmmmmmmmmm, Nom! Nom! Nom! Service here can be slow at times (depending on when you come here). Maybe phoning in an order is the way to go, should you be in a rush? There is lots of parking when coming to St. Louis Drive Inn, so parking is not an issue here. There is NO indoor seating, but they do have a covered outdoor seating area just to the side of the drive Inn. First time in a long time that I came to this area for okazu next door and they're closed. St. Louis Drive In is a good second choice. Not busy at all at 10:15am on a Saturday, which surprised me. Loads of open parking spaces. (By the time I left. There was only one car in the lot.) It's been a while since I got a Student Special, and now I remember why. The hamburger bun changed. It's not soft like before. It's a bigger bun, not in size, but just more of it. You know what I mean. It's also very dry. Quite disappointing. (I wonder if I can ask for white bread instead of a bun next time. ) There wasn't nearly enough Mayo on this simple burger. (No other condiments ) That also helped make it difficult to eat. The fries were not fresh. Thy had been sitting a while under the heat lamp, probably from 2-3 orders ago. I got the last of that batch, including all the little 1" pieces. She scraped the bottom of the pan for my order. They were mildly warm and bordering on stale. (Is $ so tight that you can't dump one order and drop a fresh batch?) The lilikoi drink was still bomb. So thirst quenching, but so much sugar! I never do that much sugar! Ordered mild chicken wing dings too. So happy! Cooked to perfection. Crispy outside, tender and juicy inside. I was recommended to go to St. Louis Drive In for a large event but one of the people had a serious sesame seed allergy. I called TWICE the week of the event to confirm the large order, pick up day/time, and made sure the seafood bento doesn't have any sesame seed on it due to allergies. They assured me of all. The day of the event, I went a little early just to make sure they're working on it only to find out they haven't even started on our order. Their response was: "I don't know... what large order? We the cashiers weren't aware of it." I'm glad I still had an hour to the lunch time... I came back 45 min later and they barely had them ready... then they proceeded to tell me they run out of rice and they can't prepare the three more bentos that I needed. They somehow figured it out after I said I needed to just wait to have the right number of bentos. The worst part... there's sesame seeds in the furikake guys. Food allergies could be a serious issue and they needed to take our request seriously. Thankfully my event attendee was okay after taking Benadryl as a precaution but this has to be brought up to the owner's attention. After speaking to you guys twice about my order with details, I would expect a better job for a business who's been doing this for a very long time. The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed it. And yes, they offer great value for what they offer. Additional note: they accept credit cards but not tap to pay... no Apple Pay.
