As I opened my to go plate of food feeling ripped off and taken advantaged of all I imagined was the owners sitting together over tea and discussing how they can charge the most and give the least. I was told this place had authentic doner. I went out of my way to pay this place a visit. I arrived and ordered the doner plate and a price of dessert I believe called astar. The told was a little over $35. I was so confused because it seemed SO expensive. The picture I posted actually makes it look like a lot more that what was actually there. Anyway it was nothing to call home about and had no taste. I did like the dessert. I was so bothered and called and asked how much the plat was and the owner said $24.99 plus tax! Crazy

My last day of "staycation" in Downtown Los Angeles before I head back to Hollyweird and I'm having my morning coffee at a beloved French restaurant I patronize near the loft I'm staying at, wondering what I should do for my last meal of lunch in town when a nice gentleman off to my side starts up a conversation with me, asks, "I see you perusing Yelp, you looking for a good restaurant here?" I laugh and explain that, in fact, I was. We get to talking and he's a jeweler in the Jewelry District and recommends a few places I've been to already. Then he looks me in the eye pointedly and says, "St. Vincent's Deli. The Döner Sandwich." It's one I haven't tried so I thank him for the tip and I do, indeed, abide by the recommendation... I walk a few blocks in the balmy weather to the tucked off the beaten path place in what's known as St. Vincent's Court and find my destination. The man handing out To Go bags for pick-up as well as in-person orders certainly looks to be the manager and/or owner and I learn from people speaking with him that his name is Noray. In the very least, he is clearly The Man here. I take my friend's advice and get the döner shawarma all beef on pita bread to keep the carbs lower but boy I want it on the other option of the french roll. I wait my turn as Noray's main guy sets to making me a delicious sandwich of perfectly cut ribbons of beef, not overly seasoned, well assembled into a nice pita. One bite and I know I owe the stranger who recommended the place a beer or at least my gratitude for not steering me wrong: the meat is lean and tender, something I truly appreciate, while being flavorful and fun to eat with the tzatziki and pickles and peppers. It's a 10/10 lunch sandwich for $15... These are the kind of places I cherish, being run by just the kind of faces you want serving you a sandwich over the counter and after perfecting it over the decades. Delicious.

$11 for gyro sandwich on either French baguette or pita. Generous portions of meat obscures shrettuce and tomato. Tastes like grilled steak more than döner. Cash only. This small deli is tucked into St. Vincent's Court alongside another deli and a slew of mediterranean restaurants. Seems to be almost totally patronized by stocky/elderly men.

Fantastic sandwiches for a very reasonable price! $10 will get you a loaded sub and a side. Fast friendly service too.

    Dolmas to go.

I'm addicted to their dolmas. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/st-vincent-deli-los-angeles?select=8LaaIxIdaHQue7NuMKS5jA#8LaaIxIdaHQue7NuMKS5jA When it comes to flavor: They're fresh, and well-seasoned. When it comes to texture: The rice is made just right and the grape leaves aren't crunchy (i've had horrific experienced elsewhere). You also can't beat the fact that you get three dolmas for $1.75. That means you can have a great lunch for cheap. Plus, the customer service here is on point. The people that work here treat you like family. When looking for dolmas in DTLA, turn into the alley and make a beeline for this place. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/st-vincent-deli-los-angeles?select=hfTI_DSBDjbjxsD17KakEQ#hfTI_DSBDjbjxsD17KakEQ

Love Love Love this place! Best Doner Kebab in Downtown yet! St. Vincent Deli is located in a small alleyway attached to the St. Vincent jewelry building - it's not the easiest thing to find - but definitely worth it. The owners are really nice and can pretty much make you anything you want (any kind of sandwich, etc.) ... personally I've only ever had the Doner Kebab (which is like Shwarma) Here's what I got: Doner Kebab Plate: I enjoy the sandwich version as well (you can get it on French bread, yay!), but I felt like having the plate (comes with the meat, rice and salad). You can definitely taste the freshness of the meat (this ain't no defrosted meal). Fries: The fries are super crispy. I usually prefer thick steak fries, but these are really good, especially if you dip them in hummus. Side of Hummus: It comes with pita bread, but like I said I prefer eating it with fries instead (making it up as I go people - sometimes things work out). I also love the little alleyway itself ... it's quaint - looks like it belongs in a different city/decade! Definitely a must try in downtown for me!!

4+stars?? Really?? This place was really disappointing. I walk past St. Vincent Court almost every time I'm in DTLA, and have always wondered if the food was any good in the several eateries located there. I had some time for lunch this past weekend, so I thought I'd give it a try. The sign out front advertising freshly made (not frozen) döner kebobs drew me in. With a can of soda, $13+change. Sat in one of the small tables in the sidewalk, and waited for my order. About 8-10 minutes, this lifeless-looking thing was brought to my table. The meat was dry, mealy, and bland. It took several bites before I tasted some of the accoutrements that were placed deep in the pita, followed by the meat. I give it (barely) 2-stars. I hope the staff take this review seriously, as the competition for quality eats in DTLA is steep, and putting out a subpar product like this is unsat.

This place is has been an institution in the DTLA jewelry jewelry district for decades, and for good reason...their doner (gyros) are simply the best around. They serve their special meat in a few incarnations, and no matter which you choose (a wrap, a taco, a sandwich or a plate) it's absolutely delicious. The meat pairs perfectly with an ice cold tahn (yogurt drink) available in the fridge. If you're craving a quick and tasty lunch drop in, you won't regret it and you'll be back.

Best shawarma plate in all of Los Angeles and greater area period. It's better than my family shawarma, so that tells you something.

The pastrami is so tender and juicy. Nice thick cuts layered on top of each other. The cole slaw goes right on top of the pastrami and balances out the heavy and juicy pastrami. The rye bread is soft in the center, but the crust has a very crispy crunch. Best pastrami I've ever had.

So it's quite the coup that I finally made it on over to the Heights DABS! A slice of that 18 inch pie is on the brain today as I skip up the mini-staircase into the joint. Having just come from another not-to-be-named Pizza spot in the DTLA to NELA corridor, my hangdog face belies my energetic hoppin-pep-in-the-step into Heights, shaking off a droopy and disappointingly dry slice amidst the brain-bleeding profanity laced hate-punk screaming over that joint's speakers as I sized up the Margherita I always use as an avatar to benchmark how we dooooin' in the pizza quality and taste department no matter where I go. I confess I've been captured and SPOILED by love affairs with Greek Pizza in Boston, Deep Dish in Chicago, NYC greezy gooey goodness at 3am, and of course the ultimate seduction of sublime simplicity of the Neapolitan Pizzas of Napoli. Yes, I am a sucker for the traditional brick oven Margheritas and Bufalinas of Italia, just that simple barometer of OG greatness, minimalistic bliss. Less than 5 bucks and 10 min later, I'm ambling down said teeny stairs with a large warm white cardboard box that seems far too large for a mere SLICE. Have they made a packaging error? I was expecting a small thin wilty Dixie plate! These days, we don't wanna waste cardboard, do we? Driving off, I contemplate a spot to pull over along the Arroyo Seco to enjoy my dining behind the wheel. I just can't hold in my wondering, patience is definitely NOT a virtue when curiosity is just killing this Jazz Cat. A quick stop at a red light later, I can't hold it in any longer. FLIP. UP. THAT. LID! Daaaaaaammmnnnn! That is one MONSTROUS slice, as I slyly smile in astonishment! But my sly smile slowly segues to sadness, then semi-panicked confusion, disorientation, even! For THIS is not the Margherita one familiarly recognizes as the artistic minimalistic masterpiece a proper Neapolitan Margherita MUST BE! I am starting to get anxious, angsty, and now a bit ANGRY! what a fool I was! Instead I am misled into chow down mode to consume a Godzilla-sized molten mess of mossy dry basil haphazardly strewn about to and fro across the pie, resembling katsuo bonito flakes dancing around in the disarray of their differential dehydration! Inexplicably, jagged rows of somewhat square Roma tomatoes are lined up in lazy formations like a disorganized military company. What's more, the gooey globs of mozzarella are NOT expertly anchored down to the bed of cheese below, supposed to cling to the pie while providing just enough protruding relief like an old globe map with a mountain range rising above the horizon. Nope, they are instead here and there and almost everywhere, seemingly untethered to the matrix of cheese below, chaotically floating around like slightly rectangular glops of pale possible goodness?!!? JT, hold it together, you must attack this mess while it's still hot. Beep Beep! THE LIGHT HAS TURNED GREEN MANY SECONDS AGO! Get thee to the Arroyo! Minutes later, I'm at my perch. I bite into the unruly beast. I am pleasantly greeted by a most satisfying CRUNCH! Then a chewy tug-tremendous! Then the mass of basil flakiness flying through my mouth and down the hatch, chased by those deeeelish misshapen untethered white cubes o' cheesiness charging down my throat aside tons of tumbling tomatoes! It's an absolute avalanche of WOW! It's like there's a party in my mouth, and the most unlikely heroes showed up and showed out! Let's add the Unconventional Neapolitanical Pizzas of Lincoln Heights to the Lovefest List! Heights DABS, you've made my day. On to meet up with long lost friends converging in HP from nearby points dearly loved, I'm feelin' GRRRREEEEAT! DONE.
