A five-star rating means something really extraordinary occurred during a dining experience for me. We were a party of 6 for dinner on a Sunday evening. This was our first visit, but the others in the party had been there before. Not only was SOMETHING extraordinary - EVERYTHING was! I cannot remember a better dining experience in a very, very long time. Definitely all-time top three. We had the Oysters Rockefeller and the cheese plate. The oysters were CRAZY good, and the cheddar cheese - called Prairie Breeze by the Musser Family in Iowa - was some of the best I've ever had. The cheese board was a bit mundane - only a few crackers, a jar of jelly and some small little red pepper with the cheeses, but the cheeses themselves were wonderful. We all had different steaks, and two of us had salmon. All were AMAZING, but my husband's filet was literally so tender and flavorful, he declared it the best steak he had ever put in his mouth! That is saying A LOT from my husband who comes from a beef farm! Finally, we were celebrating a birthday, and so our waiter brought three very shareable desserts to our table - COMPLIMENTARY! We had a lightest chocolate torte with ganache (looked rich, but was much lighter than expected), bread pudding that was decadent beyond words, and my personal favorite, the creme brûlée. Delicious all!!! Saving the best for last, I want to call attention to our waiter Peter. This man is among the finest waiters I have met, and he enhanced our dining experience greatly. No question I judge restaurants on the freshness, preparation, presentation and flavor of their food choices. But the truly greatest restaurant experiences for me have been those with exceptional service - a connection that stands out every bit as much - or more - as the dishes they deliver. The cross-country trip got us to Terre Haute to the Candlewood Suites (the best in the city). Walked down to the Stables Restaurant and Bar. Very busy on a Saturday night. We knew little about the restaurant except it was the stables for the brewery delivery horses. Beautiful interior and there was live music with a violin and pianist who very talented. The staff was attentive and friendly and the bone-in rib eye was superb and more than enough for two of us to share with decent wines. Eat here for sure. Once again Yelped a winner! From the outside and surrounding neighborhood we weren't too sure but when we entered we were greeted by a gracious hostess. Peter the waiter was very warm, welcoming and shared a wealth of knowledge about the menu, the building and the city. We had fried green tomatoes for an appetizer, delicious home bread. Food was great. However, our server (Will) treated my husband and I as an inconvenience. He mumbled through the specials, seemed irritated when my husband asked if they had any other beer on tap. He replied no and didn't offer any other options. He eventually brought another list for him to look over. We were there early Tuesday evening. The restaurant didn't seem extremely busy. Perhaps Will was just having a bad evening or perhaps we didn't look like big tippers... With all of that being said the serving assistants provided us with superb service. I did tip approximately 27% because I was hopeful the serving assistants would receive a portion of the tip. We found this place by accident we were actually going to the bar across the street but they didn't want to seat us!!! Decided we would go here instead! I'm so glad that we did! It was excellent! We were seated within five minutes and had a drink in our hands soon after! They have fabulous Caesar salads and excellent fillets! Visited here exploring wedding rehearsal dinner sites. Manager gave us first class treatment and brought us several samples (full servings) of items that are on the special event buffet but not necessarily the regular menu. Everything we ate was excellent and we even changed our minds on some of the buffet items we had originally chosen simply by reading the menu. Prime rib was terrific. Before this visit, the only great prime rib I've found is at Lawry's in Chicago. This is a close second if not topping them. Bread pudding. Sounds kinda gross right? No way! It was incredible. Staff was very attentive. Manager did it up right for us. Waitress was terrific and the water glass filler-uppers never let a glass get half empty. That's a pet peeve of mine and a guide to the restaurant's quality. We can't wait for the rehearsal dinner and we will most definitely eat here when visiting the kids soon. read more

Started off with the Baked Brie appetizer. It was definitely the best part of the meal. I ordered the vegetable platter, and it was a huge portion but wasn't very flavorful. Went to Stables with a group of 12. Service was very good for a group this size. Our waiter, Peter, was very attentive. I started with Oysters Rockefeller followed by the French Onion Soup. Both were very good. The soup had a nice combination of cheeses, which isn't unique, but it did have chunks of steak in it too. I then had the Filet steak with cheesy garlic mashed potatoes. This entree was also to my liking. For dessert I had cream brûlée which was yummy. Also to my surprise, at the bar they had Ron Zacapa XO (aged 25 years) Rum which I had with dessert. We went to Stables for our anniversary three years ago. We made reservations and got our table immediately. However, we sat in our booth for a full hour before we were waited on. I thought the atmosphere was second to none. Very romantic. The food is great ( porterhouse and filet is awesome). And I always had great service. Great choices of whisey/scotch. My only complaint would be that they don't have a great selection of beer. Other then that it's the best place for a dining experience (especially for TH). One last thing is that it's expensive. So if you bring a date you won't spend less than $100 (unless of course you're a cheap a$$). But to me a great place to eat is worth the money. read more

Stables has the best ambience of any restaurant I've been to in Terre Haute; it's very romantic. Stables serves some of the city's best food with very good service. They can also accommodate large groups. Stables is located at the site of an old stable, and it looks that way from the outside. Inside it's comfy, nicely lit, and wonderfully romantic. I had one of the nicest anniversary dinners ever. The service really helped in this regard. They gave us the perfect balance of being attentive, so we didn't have to think about anything, without making us feel like we were being pestered. The regular menu has good variety for a steak house. If you want steak, there are many choices. But even if you don't want steak, there are enough chicken, fish, and pasta dishes to choose from. The red snapper was one of the best cooked pieces of fish I've tasted. My date's steak was so good that when she microwaved the leftovers the next day (criminal, I know) she said it was still the best steak she'd ever eaten. I truly appreciated the wine selection. We didn't want a whole bottle, so it was nice to have so many single glasses of wine to choose from. Many restaurants offer a small selection of mediocre wines to order by the glass. This review will cover: atmosphere/service, quality and taste of food, and value. Please, keep in mind I recently moved from New Orleans and have had the opportunity to experience outstanding dining. Atmosphere- The decor is a mixture of newer construction and used office furniture. The building is freshly painted with wonderful flooring and an impressive well stocked bar. Tables are a mix of newer furniture and old outdated tacky furnishings which would be best saved for the landfill. My husband and I sat on cloth chairs that looked like they came for the set of Madmen and were soiled. One would figure, if paying $10 for a glass of beer, they could afford higher grade of furnishings. Our waiter, William, was awesome and knew the menu and bar items very well. Obviously, folks come for the service. Quality/taste of food- This was my husband and my first time to Stables- so we opted for drinks and appetizers. We weren't sure if possibly dropping $36 for a sub-quality steak was a risk willing to take on a place we knew little about. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms and crab cakes and started off with my Moscato wine and my husband a draft beer. We should have guessed, when prices weren't listed, this was their money maker. Of all my worldly travels, I have NEVER encountered a small beer costing $10 each. Though over-priced ($8 for less than an 8 oz serving), my moscato was properly chilled and yummy. The two silver dollar sized crab cakes, consisting mostly of breading and three pieces of solid crab claw meat (lowest grade of crab meat), swam on a platter filled with lettuce. The remoulade sauce and rendered teriyaki glaze was outstanding and made the cakes palatable. The stuffed mushrooms came on a large oval plate smothered with a mushroom-style bechemel sauce. Though somewhat oily, the taste was good. The stuffing within the mushrooms left much to be desired. The stuffing consisted of heavy bread crumbs with scant hardened crab claw meet. The texture and taste was so unappetizing, half of the plate was left. Overall, the quality and taste was less than what one would experience in a three star establishment and we were glad we did not stay for dinner. Value- Our bill, including the tip for William, was $85. Keep in mind we each had two drinks and one appetizer each. Food was left behind and we stopped on the way home and ordered subs from Jimmy Johns. In my opinion, the quality is less than ideal and extremely overpriced, I would not recommend this restaurant, It is...a waste of money. read more

Went to Stables for the first time to celebrate my birthday this past week. We didn't have a reservation, although we should've made one because we drove for 45 minutes to get there, then had to wait another 30 to get a table. Our server, Will, appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, and made my wife very uncomfortable with inappropriate sexual remarks. After an enjoyable but overpriced meal, I asked to speak with a manager (about his conduct), only to find out he was the manager. Upon leaving we noticed him trying to feel up the hostess, as she repeatedly told him to stop and go away. We felt terrible for the young girl. Worst management I've ever seen. I had such high hopes for Stables, but I was very disappointed and my wife agreed that we'll never be going back. read more

Great restaurant with really neat decor!

The food is pretty good, though not exceptional, but it is significantly overpriced. If I'm at a restaurant and I order a dish with Chilean seabass or sea scallops I can understand why it costs $30 as those are expensive ingredients. But when you sell chicken dishes for $30 in Terre Haute that's too much. $21 for fettuccine alfredo and salad. $21 for a "vegetable platter" that has a baked potato, some cheap vegetables, and rice. The latter two dishes have maybe $3-4 worth of ingredients. Granted, there are a lot of costs in running a restaurant (labor, rent, taxes, insurance, etc.), and at a restaurant like this you're not paying your line cooks $8 an hour, but still. When I eat at Umi Grill I understand what I'm paying for. At Stables, not so much. read more

Just finished dinner at Stables, and as a business traveler to the area, this was a great find! Yes, it's pricey... because it's steak... good steak. What do u expect? I don't hand out 5 stars until I've tried a few more menu items, but the 7 oz fillet was nearly steak perfection! I would say the appetizers seem pricey, but the meats come in at "city steakhouse" rates. Everything was good, but what made me want to jump in my hotel bed and fire off a yelp review was the exceptional extras this place has to offer. First, the building is a living local history lesson. Super cool. (Take a minute and read the pamphlet they offer). Second, the staff. The bartender (Brittany?) was noticeably interested in my opinion of food and drink. When she noticed my interest in Bourbon, she grabbed ______ (can't remember his name) who took a minute away from hosting a tasting event to describe to me his favorite bottles. Very over rated. Service was poor. There were three tables of guests only and I waited an hour for a steak! When it was served it was rare! I ordered it Med well! There was red liquid all over the plate and the waitress brought it to me anyway! I immediately lost my appetite! I felt nauseous! Stables is the most overpriced eating establishment in Terre Haute. If you want to dump a bunch of money on ho-hum food, be my guest. Sure, the building is neat, the beer, wine, bourbon, & scotch selections are large, but the kitchen dissappoints enormously.
