The food is great but the customer service is absolutely unfortunate. I called for takeout recently and it took them 10 minutes to figure out my total. I'm a pretty patient and understanding customer so this would not have been a problem if (1) I wasn't hung up on while I was patiently holding and (2) if I wasn't given a rude, unprofessional attitude when I called back since not only did I not have a total, but they also didn't take down my name/number or confirm the order. The best way to describe The Stack is "Solid". Expect a wait on weekend mornings. The best part about the place is the value. Expect a good amount of food at a very low price. The hash browns/bacon and omelets/eggs usually come well done and definitely not overly-seasoned, (or seasoned much at all for that matter) so keep this in mind when ordering. The normal buttermilk pancakes are the best part of the place in my mind. They absolutely put all IHOPs to shame and are very fluffy and flavorful. The one downside of this place is that they do not have name brand syrup, so syrup lovers, be aware. Food was ok, nothing special. Gyro with a cup of soup (French Onion or Chicken). French onion was good with plenty of gooey cheese on top. Greek spinach pie with feta cheese and a side of a few stuffed grape leaves. Chicken salad sandwich on rye toast was tasty, had just the right amount of mayonnaise, not too much, not too little. Been passing by this place for so long and never gave it a try til now ! I got a steak two eggs and potatoes. The steak was good although my potatoes were slightly burnt and was alittle hard to chew. I got my eggs sunny side but they were alittle over cooked, I like my yolks runny! No big deal still delicious. My boyfriend got stuffed French toast and kielbasa omelette. My husband and I always came to Stacks to eat Sunday morning breakfast. This morning was an exception to all the great servers. It was chaotic at best. There was no check in and list being made of who was next to be seated. Several tables were self seated and they got their own coffee and silverware...were served food before we were waited on. Our server Robin was rude and her service was poor. She about spilled hot coffee all over my husband, she wouldn't expedite the food. My husband had to leave to open our store before the food ever arrived. She forgot to bring his simple bagel order. She tossed menus where they are to be placed...the bus boy had to pick them up. My husband says this will be his last time at this establishment. It is really sad..this is the only time we get to spend as a family on the weekend. The waitress didn't even stop at our table once. This place was highly recommended to me so I was excited to try it one morning with my mom. There wasn't anything good about our experience. We get seated at the table and our waitress comes over to take our drink orders and asks us to bear with her. Eh no problem, not in a big rush, although it was a Saturday morning and not that many people were there. The waitress comes back in a bit to take our order. After she leaves, my mom says to me, "I must need a hearing aid because I cannot understand a thing the waitress is saying." I respond, "Mom, that's because the lady has only 1 snaggly tooth in her mouth. She asked us to bear with her again..." We still don't understand why as there's not much going on. We had ordered blueberry pancakes and cinnamon raisin french toast. I was officially freaked out by the label-less maple syrup, but you have to pay $1.75 extra for their homemade syrup. They should just provide their own maple syrup if it's that good and incorporate it into the price. Anyway, I could have made the french toast myself. It was just thin slices of bread, not the big fluffy french toast one expects. No powdered sugar. No whipped butter. My mom's pancakes were ehhh, I've had better. Service: 1 and a half stars: The waitresses and waiters can be very difficult and feel as if you are torturing them sometimes by doing work. The host is not very accommodating and they really make you feel unwanted. Atmosphere: 2 stars The restaurant itself is ok but it can be very loud and the service can sometimes be rushed. Dinner was not impressive. I had Fish and Chips, small side of coleslaw and french onion soup. I wouldnt go back to eat here. The french onion soup was over salted, it was a cool concept with bread in the bottom and melted cheese on top of the bowl. The soup was broth based with thick slices of onion. The Fish and Chips: Definitely not homemade. The coleslaw was okay, but it had a ton of mayonnaise. Instead of pre packaged tarter sauce i used the coleslaw to top the fried fish. i didnt even bother with the fries. The fries looked like steak fries. My husband had the fried seafood platter, i tried everthing on his plate. Over fried, no seasoning and chewy. They should just take it off the menu. How can you mess up something so simple. If you can not bring taste or quality to the dish then dont add it to the menu. His plate brought two sides, he picked corn and mashed potatoes and gravy on the side. Corn was canned corn, not even buttered. Gravy was watery, flavor was ok not the best. The food was not anything out of this world, seemed to be over priced for the low quality food. Had a hard time deciding what order as they offer a wide variety of things. Within a few minutes of placing my order, I was out the door. BIG plus! The waffle was light but not as crispy as I like it. Still, it was very tasty. The omelette was nicely sized and the pancakes were better than the waffle. They were light and fluffy. They also packed some whipped butter in my bag - definitely better than other places that serve regular yellow butter. The place is quaint and spacious though, from the outside, it's hard to tell. The dining area is all right, clean, but the booths are tight and I'm six-two so this is A Concern. Kids are welcome and made to feel welcome, oddly. It's located on the Passaic but doesn't take full advantage of a terrific water feature like that -- come on, the crew team on the water in the early morning is pretty cool. In more detail: parking is at a premium on Sunday mornings but we still managed a spot near the door (thanks God). The diner is always open, every day of the year, and closes for the night anywhere from 9pm to 6pm. This is not A Bad Thing: this means they have downtime to clean the place and keep it from falling apart, and it's obvious they do clean and maintain the joint. The waitresses were very good at their job: coffee never dropped to critical levels, kids had crayons and placemats, parents had extra napkins, food came right out, and the check hit the table at precisely the right time. They have a ton of tables and it was pretty empty so we were seated right away even though there were five of us. Our waitress was very nice and didn't cringe when we told her we would all be on separate checks. Four of us got omelets and the other got the pizza burger. They charge $.45 per egg white instead of just a flat fee so be aware of that. I ordered the feta and spinach omelet and figured it would be cheaper and easier to sub well done onions for the spinach. On the menu it says that it comes with home fries and toast or pancakes, however when I got my omelet I didn't have home fires. Also, no surprise the onions weren't well done at all. The omelet was OK nothing to write home about, not a lot in it and not super filling. Needless to say I wish I had my home fries when I finished my omelet and toast. Technically I'd like to give 3.5 stars but Yelp doesn't offer that option so I'm beat. This place is consistently good, I've been here twice. Has a home-y feel, most people here seem to know one another. They let me order off the kids menu rather than a huge portion that is their normal fare. Considerably cheaper than Tick Tock Diner or other local diners for that matter. Their turkey bacon is one of the better ones I've had, rarely greasy and identifiable. Pancakes are yummy (although I've only had plain buttermilk). The egg bread French toast isn't my favorite but it's more my taste buds talking because others tried it and said it was yummy. They do carry sugar-free syrup, which is a plus. Parking lot is always full but on street parking is available.
