Staggering Ox is a great place for tasty, slightly unusually prepared sandwiches. The atmosphere is very unique but so wonderful. The outside of the building does not do the restaurant justice, but makes for a great surprise the first time you walk in. I ordered the black bean quesadilla and it was fantastic! My brother ordered a Clubfoot sandwich, which are very unusual in their presentation. The clubfoot is a sandwich made in a hollowed out "tube" of bread, served with your condiment on the side. We are from Washington and every time we travel to Montana this is our first stop. My boyfriend and I both worked at the Spokane location when it was open. Unfortunately, the Helena location is the worst I've visited, every time I've visited. The gal who took our order, Kylie, was extremely rude when I asked for a sandwich from the Missoula menu. I was told "we don't do that here." My request was not very far fetched. As I have gotten a hot club foot at that location before. Just got their Texas Land Grab and was SEVERELY disappointed! Hardly any meat and there was a good inch of just bread. BBQ sauce wasn't anything special, tasted like anything store bought. Definitely not worth the $10. Go spend that on Bad Betty's if you're craving good BBQ read more

I love Staggering Ox! When I first started dating my husband, we made a trip to his hometown of Helena. The first place he had to take me for lunch was Staggering Ox, and it was obvious why. The food is amazing, fresh, and there are so many healthy choices. The atmosphere is totally low key and artsy. It's a place anyone can grab a quick bite or just go to study. The coffee shop in the back really makes it a diverse place for groups to meet. When I was finishing school in Billings, I was thrilled that they'd opened a location there. One of my favorite places to go in all of MT. I am big sandwich fan and Staggering Ox is absolutely amazing. When you go in take your time and pick your bread. Then you toppings. Also ask for bread Gutz. They have best bread. I also recommend a hot boat sandwich, very filling. read more

I decided to try Staggering Ox again. BAD mistake. What happened to this place? There used to be cool art on the wall, now there were just nail marks everywhere and hardly any art at all unless you count the dust covered couch hanging in that tree. The music used to be cool and you had the painted art and the photographs. I used to LOVE the atmosphere here. So did my kids. Today they thought it was totally ghetto. I guess if that's the new look they are going for, they nailed it. We went to the order counter and were greeted by a rather nice young lady. However, when we went to order, BIG SURPRISE, they did not have cheesy guts AGAIN. Of course, she was quick to tell me that they actually had the bread guts, but you had to order them with the meat. We asked if we could pay for those and skip the meat, but were told NO by "Sekora" the manager of the place. Seriously? You won't let me pay more and take less? What kind of business sense is that? The man who delivered our food was as rude as rude can be, practically throwing it at us and didn't even bother to ask if we needed anything else. This place is just going downhill more and more. I won a gift certificate in an auction, but I think I'll be giving it away since I won't be going back. I don't recommend you do either...unless you like being treated like a second-class citizen. When I asked for the owner's name, they gave it to me and then told me that he is only there from 8am until 10am. He might want to reconsider being there for only 2 hours a day because this place really needs help. Oh, and game pods is now history, but they left the holes in the walls for that extra ghetto look. I wish I could give this place a "less than one star" rating. I had the misfortune of visiting the Helena, MT Staggering OX on February 22nd of this year. My girlfriend is from MT and had enjoyed the Missoula location while she was in college. We were driving though Helena and thought "why not, we're hungry and it's a sandwich place so we can be back on the road quickly with our food". Unfortunately, this was not the case. Okay, where he to start. I guess the first red flag was when my girlfriend went into the restroom to wash her hands. There was a teenage employee that had just finished using the restroom and only ran her hands under water without washing them. Yuck. So.. we ordered two sandwiches and waited. We waited for 20 minutes before speaking with the guy at the counter (at this point, I have to say that he was the only person that seemed to care at all in that place) He checked with the people in the kitchen (one was a teenage kid with food in his mouth and the other was a guy who looked like he was a 40 year old meth head. And at this point I must apologize to most meth heads, because this guy is giving you a bad name). About 5 minutes later the food was passed through the window to, you guessed it, the girl who had failed to wash her hands in the bathroom. The meth head slid the food across to her with such force that she had no chance to catch it before it fell about two feet onto the other counter. The girl brought the food over to us at the counter. Since I had seen the food fall, I took a look at it and my Philly steak sandwich was no longer a sandwich, it was a pile of meat with a few pieces of bread squashed together. At this point I said "No. we are not taking this and we would like our money back" a younger gentleman came over and handed me $8. My girlfriend was ready to get back on the road so we just took it. A few minutes later, I called and spoke with someone about the service we received. He told me that there would be a manager named Jim at the store the next day if we wanted to speak with him. I called the next day and the person who answered said "Jim is usually here, but he left early today" I left a message. I called the next day as well and the person who answered said "Jim is not available" I left another message. What did I do next? Yep! I called for the third straight day and received the same response. I called once more about a week later and received the same response. I did not want to resort to giving them a bad review on a site, but here we are. Jim: you run a terrible establishment and I can tell exactly why your employees act like they don't take any pride in their work; because you don't take any pride in it. I have managed restaurants in Alaska and Idaho. I know things go wrong sometimes, but this wrong. And with no accountability? Unacceptable. I will call the restaurant again, and again if I must. read more

I really love the Ox and the sandwiches are decent-to-excellent. Others here that complain have probably only been there once... it takes a while to find a favorite and learn to eat the food with the proper amount of sauce. My only complaint is consistency: it can be excellent one day, and average the next, ordering the same stuff. The recipes seem to change (or rather the staff making the stuff) and that has a dramatic impact on the food. They have also recently opened a coffee shop/bar combo in back. It is actually really awesome... a great place to work or meet. The problem in back is the service. They have it set up so the poor order taker also serves food, makes coffee drinks and takes cash for payment... really easy to back up when you are set up that way... read more

I'm only giving 2 stars because the sauces are so good. I had a headbanger and my daughter had a pizzadilla. They were minimal but OK but worth only about 2/3rds of what they cost. But there were dirty tables galore, workers who'd rather talk with friends, and the floor was disgustingly filthy. When the guy did start wiping tables, he wiped everything onto the floor. Super gross and unappetizing. Save your $$ ... Go elsewhere. read more

Having been a LONG TIME Staggering Ox fan - since they first opened in Helena - it's very disappointing to me to go there now-a-days...the service is exceptionally slow if you order there & don't just grab something out of the cooler; the sandwiches are still good - BUT the lack of ingredients and increase in prices is awful. It used to be a task to eat an entire clubfoot - now, I'm still hungry when I'm done. Used to love, love, love The Staggering Ox. Our office orders food from there almost every Friday. Sandwiches used to be amazing. Delicious and stuffed pretty well. Recently (last month or so) our sandwiches have been delivered skimpy and/or just wrong (ingredients missed, wrong sauces, wrong breads). I have never had a good experience here, the bread was old and all other ingredients outside of the massive amount of lettuce, were nill. The atmosphere is unexpectedly edgy and artistic - also the building is huge with plenty of seating to pick from. The sandwiches do not take long to prepare at all and are amazing! My favorite is the Nuke - I order it every time with some ranch! The sandwiches cost around $6-10 each, so they are fairly pricey but I personally think they're worth every penny. read more

None of them looked very clean (wearing pj pants and cut up shirts in the kitchen), and the man at the counter was very rude and expected a tip even though we ordered to go. I stopped at Staggering Ox on my way out of town this afternoon. I had my two small children with me and when I arrived the line was quite long, but seemed to be moving quickly. I ordered ONE sandwich and some bread guts to go. The time was 12:49 (per my reciept).I then sat down to wait. About 15 minutes in, I noticed the couple that had been in front of me had already received their food, so I assumed my order would be ready quickly. At the 30 minute mark I asked the girl behind the counter if she could check on my food and that it was taking way to long. She checked and informed that I wasn't forgotten and they were cooking as fast as they could. I didn't receive my food until 1:26(so basically 45 minutes, for one sandwich) I received a half-hearted "sorry it took so long". Then when I started eating my sandwich I found that it was missing salsa and covered in black olives...which wasn't what I had ordered. Needless to say, I am disappointed, will never be back(which is a shame, since I pass by a lot), and will not recommend to anyone. read more

I never right reviews, but I was so disgusted by this I felt the need to. We ordered to sandwiches from Staggering ox today, a mouse trap and the Port Authority. When we got them home, the mouse trap was fine, but the Port Authority didn't have any of the egg salad in the center, just a few pieces on top. We took that one back in (luckily we are close by) and they graciously replaced it (after stating sorry, the staff is all pretty hungover today). After getting the second sandwich home, it was the same thing. Instead of driving back one more time, we just called in to let management know. The manager was extremely rude and said they watched the staff make it, even though we cut the sandwich open trying to find egg salad in the rest of the sandwich, and again found nothing (mind you they charge $8.49 for this sandwich). The manager then proceeded to hang up on us after he said the staff made it. We called back on last time asking again for the manager and were given a random staff member who said he made the sandwich and made it the same way he makes all the other sandwiches. Fine, If that is how they are deciding to make their sandwiches and food, for that price, we will take our business elsewhere. We were told to call back tomorrow to speak with the owner. Since I have lived in Helena (4 years), we have grown increasingly unhappy with the food quality, while the prices in still pretty steep for a sandwich. We like supporting local businesses, but after this, I will take my money elsewhere. read more
