First visit review. A very original place that boasts a great view of the town but we got in as they were closing and seating on the deck wasn't available. The service was very friendly. The menu options were appetizing albeit no theme could be drawn. We went with the Stairway Signature Salad and the Tuna Melt. Both were good but not something I would order again and the side of manufactured chips just made it more mundane. We did visit during the pandemic (Sept 2020) and quarantine restrictions were pretty daunting. We decided to stop at Stairway Cafe for breakfast before heading home. We climbed one flight of stairs from the street level to the upstairs dining room, which is nicely decorated and very cozy with several tables packed in very tight quarters. The dining room was almost full and we got the last open table. We were offered cups of hot coffee ($1.99 each) from Black Bear Roasters as we sat down. They serve up breakfast and lunch anytime offering some creative egg dishes, scrambles, omelets, pancakes, French toast, salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, and sides. However the food is on the pricier side with modest portions served, most individual dishes priced $7.59-$9.99 with a few benedict dishes such as the Wild Blackstone Benedict, Oscar Benedict, and Fresh Maine Lobster Benedict priced $10.99-$12.99. We only wanted a light breakfast with our coffees, so not to bog us down for the drive ahead. My friend ordered only a toasted soft plain Bagel with Cream Cheese ($2.99). I ordered a bit of breakfast and lunch and got the side of Homemade Corned Beef Hash ($4.99) and a cup of White Chicken Chili Soup with Toast ($4.99). The corned beef hash (minced corned beef, potato cubes, & shredded carrots) was definitely homemade, but tasted bland, had a wet texture, and was lukewarn. The white chicken chili soup was served very hot and tasted pretty good with a nice spicy flavor. The service was decent and we were given a topoff on the coffee. The amount food was just right, but a bit pricey for what we ordered. read more

On vacation and had our first breakfast here. Sat on the deck, nice breeze and view of the street and train station. French toast was perfectly thick, cooked excellent, cut like butter with a form and had great flavor! Regular pork Sausage patty was good. Dippy eggs done perfectly. I didn't love the elk sausage, too sweet for me, it was done perfect but just wasn't for me. All natural local root beer was very good. Highly recommend this place for breakfast! read more

What happened to this place!? Staff were less than pleasant, sanitization/cleaning was not happening appropriately, food was blah, and prices were quite excessive. I watched them use the sam dirty rag all over the place, along with spraying cleaner all inside the the condiments on the tables. It was $5 for a cup of milk!!! The pancakes were dry and seemed to be missing an ingredient or something- even the kids knew something was wrong with them. The home fries were water logged and flavorless. This is the first restaurant that my husband and I ate at in North Conway, NH. It doesn't look like much when you are walking by but when you open the door it's very welcoming. You have to walk up about 7-8 stairs and they have little sayings. We got up to the top of the staircase and were welcomed by a very nice woman. The dining area is small but quaint. The food was great. They serve breakfast and lunch. We would definitely eat here again. read more

I've been coming here with my husband once a year for about the last 5 years and it's our favorite breakfast/brunch spot. It's even better when we are able to get a table on their balcony. The staff is always friendly and the food is fresh. The French toast is delicious and so are their huevos rancheros. They can get quite busy so we understand that we might have to wait for our food at times. People that complain about waits have clearly never worked in a restaurant. I always try to take into account staffing issues such as unexpected call outs or no shows, new staff being trained in the kitchen or sometimes it's a matter of an appliance being down. To be honest I'm just grateful I am fortunate to have a meal with my family. Keep up the great work and see you in August, God willing ;) read more

This place is adorable! Very quaint and homey spot with good food. The wild game sausage selection was delicious and the biscuits and gravy was uniquely sweet. Homemade hash and maple syrup incredible as well. Recommend it for food and atmosphere. Not a ton of seating so be wearly of potentially having a wait. read more

Negative stars if that was an option!!!! The workers here are nasty to their potential customers, we were told 20 minutes yet waited over an hour and a half. When we finally were called we were asked if sitting outside was ok to which we chose not to because we had already waited outside and were cold, which was met with this response " we are trying the best we can, WE HAVE HAD THE NASTIEST CUSTOMERS TODAY!". Then were told " well I guess you will have to wait then" ....I'm sorry why was sitting outside given as a choice if it really wasn't?? Then tempers flared and instead of apologizing we were told "too bad" We chose to leave, for obvious reasons and understand why others had left with the same expression we did during our long wait outside. Way to treat potential customers, I suggest getting better attitudes if you want to continue being in the customer service business. read more

We were excited to try this place since it has such an eclectic breakfast menu. The restaurant itself is very cute and fits right in with the North Conway scene with it's "good old days" kind of feel. I just loved the stairway; Totally goes with the theme. Some unique offerings include wild game meat such as boar, elk, buffalo and venison as sausages on its own or served up in an eggs benny. One of us tried the buffalo sausage and the feedback was fantastic so do try it if you're adventurous. I ended up ordering the crab cake benedict as I'm partial to this dish and still looking for the best in New England. It was cooked to perfection with the eggs runny enough that the English muffin sopped it thoroughly - yummm. My only complaint is that the side of potatoes could've been cooked a little more so if you order their potatoes, maybe mention that you like them crispy and that should do the trick. Overall, the eggs benny here is a good rival and gets a strong 4 stars from me but the eggs benny back home at the Mad Hatter is still undefeated. First off, quickly: they officially close at 3pm but hung out a Closed sign at 2:30. Luckily my wife had gone in to get a table while I parked so I was let in despite it being just past 2:30. Unfortunately, the loud complaints from the kitchen to the server who was assigned to our table were rather unprofessional. If they insist on shutting down the kitchen 30 minutes before their official closing time, no worries, they should just reflect that in their hours. And above all, they should not complain loudly and rudely to their wait staff about customers. For the record, the server was extremely friendly and polite and we tipped him well. On the other hand, the food was very good and the prices were fair. The lobster roll was good with a fair amount of meat for the price (mayo style). The Farmhouse burger was good as well although nothing to write home about. The best thing there in my opinion is the wild game sausage. We had the boar sausage and the duck sausage. The flavors were extremely delicious with a hint of wine and spices. They were on the sweet side but in a good way. I highly recommend. We would definitely come back for the food and the service, but we would make sure to sit out of earshot of the kitchen. read more

We are local to the area and waited 30 minutes for a table, which we understand when it's busy however it was not worth the wait. Other than their omelettes everything is a la carte so it's very expensive. The pancakes had zero flavor tasted like flour. My husband had corn beef hash benedict with egg shell in it. We brought it up to our waitress who was offended and asked what we wanted her to do about it. Really? I want you to apologize and take it off of our bill. She did nothing to accomodate us and had an attitude the remainder of the time. The food minus those problems was below average I could have made better breakfast at home and not paid $54.00. OK.. they were busy, so we'll give them a pass. But my main complaint is the food... They had home made corned beef hash, which to me means real corned beef (usually in chunks). What I got was the canned mush that barely passes for corned beef.. horrible. Also, my wife asked for her sandwich without cheese. It came to our table with cheese melted on the sandwich. We told our waitress, who took it back to the kitchen, then came back about 2 minutes later without cheese. I had the breakfast burrito which was delicious, and my husband enjoyed his verde huevos rancheros.
