Good little bakery. After finding extraordinary wait times at all local restaurants (late afternoon on a Sunday!?) we visited quite late in the day for a snack while we waited. So only bread was left, but no lines!! Employees seemed a bit tired and not really interested in making recommendations, must have been a crazy day. The mische bread (whole grain sourdough) is good, exactly how you would expect it to be. The rosemary focaccia was a bit hit, we dipped it in onion jam from the stonewall kitchen shop. Very nice little patio with grape vines. The pastries pics look fantastic, but based on the bread alone I would not wait in any kind of line for it. THE BAKED GOODS HERE ARE SO INCREDIBLE! My favorite is the asiago fougasse, but I tried so many things, and they were all incredible. The wait is pretty long (30 mins), so don't go at the last minute, but the view is great (of the water across from the bakery & of the aesthetic bakery), and it's so worth it. Ordered a cranberry walnut scone on Tuesday morning and the lady checking me out was so passively aggressive rude it was kinda insane. She first swung her tablet towards me when I was paying. They strike the balance of engaging, but also moving people through the process without "pushing" The products are well labeled and displayed so beautifully that I want to buy every single item, especially the sweets. The variety is much better in the morning/early afternoon, but they still do have many tasty options available, like COOKIES!!! The cookies we had, a sea salt pecan chocolate chip, chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin - They are ALL Amazing!!!! And the really great thing, they are exactly as described..."A classic oatmeal raisin cookie. Crisp, lacy edges and chewy center packed with raisins and spiced with a pinch of nutmeg." Update: they called us back two days later. The message left was a bit dismissive saying that we likely didn't have our order even go through and they had called everyone to pick up orders that day. When I called back with my order info the staff found the order and realized it had been completely missed. They offered to refund me or make my order for pickup that day. Here is the thing. You don't "offer" me a refund when I didn't get anything to begin with. Saying it was the least you could do was a weird comment. Knowing I live in Boston also tells you that I am not popping by today for breakfast I ordered two days ago on a holiday. There was an opportunity here to make this better but it just didn't happen. The cheese on the croissant was a little funkier than usual. I tried a Gingerbread Cake which was fine, but I'm not a huge gingerbread fan in general. We stopped by on our way back from Boothbay early afternoon--there's a big parking lot right outside so that's not an issue. We got the baguette, butter croissant, chocolate rye cookie, frangipane tart and chocolate chip financier. Everything was very good, but what stuck with me was the financier. Two months ago, I dropped by this bakery to get a few pastries to bring home. Might be it was at the end of fall but there was hardly any line around 9am. I got the demi baguette, pain au chocolat, and plum frangipane tart. The demi baguette was crispy on the outside and soft inside. Very good! The chocolate croissant was average. Holy cow- should be called "Setting the Standard" baking company. Saw this place by the ocean and we decided to give it a try since there was already a line forming outside at about 10:30 am and it was following strict COVID conventions of allowing only 2 customers at at time into its shop front. No seating area but there is a parking lot if you can park safely around the line of customers standing 6 feet apart. It was an impromptu visit, so we hastily scanned the board to see what to try. In the end, we chose the Pear Frangipane and the Pain au chocolate; frangipanes are not common desserts, and so whenever I see one around, I order it! The almond taste paired with a remarkable crunch of the crust that melted in your mouth was elegantly paired with the perfectly glazed pears on top. I didn't taste any grittiness on the pears and the dessert was truly sublime. I was very impressed; not an over baked tart and clearly made with expertise and care. The pain au chocolat was something I used for the standard to compare it to other ones I've had in the past. The crispness of the pastry was remarkable. I feel that most places have enough butter in their croissants but don't have the crisp crunch when you bite into it; I did prefer my chocolate a little softer as this was more of a hard dry not melted chocolate inside but the layers were gorgeously thin and very flaky. Would highly recommend and come back in the future; if you want a good pastry shop, this place lives up to its name. My friend recommended this bakery for the prosciutto croissant and as soon as she said those two words, I was already sold. We came by on a Thursday morning at around 8:30, and the line was about 15 people deep. It moves pretty quickly though - we ended up waiting only 15 minutes. Here is everything we ordered: Prosciutto Croissant - this wasn't bad but I don't think it was worth the almost $5 price tag. I'd recommend eating it by alternating ends because one side has prosciutto, but the other doesn't. We thought we had ordered three of these (but there were two in the bag) so we went back and asked them to check if we did. Turns out we only ordered two but they gave us a third one on the house anyway. Such a nice gesture Asiago Fougasse - this was my favorite. I wish I had gotten three of these instead. Lots of asiago flavor, toast on the outside but soft on the inside Pistachio cookies - these were only okay. I didn't taste much of a pistachio flavor, but more of some type of spice they used. It tasted almost like pumpkin spice, but not Blueberry scone - pretty good blueberry flavor but I'm not a huge fan of scones in general (fiance wanted this one) If I'm ever back in Portland, I'll definitely be back for that fougasse, and maybe try some of their bread next time. read more
