Had dinner here on a Friday night and really enjoyed it. Seemed really crowded from the outside so we almost went somewhere else, but peaked inside, did a short loop, and a couple of bar seats freed up. Otherwise, the place was pretty full. Bartenders were great, very attentive (even though the place was busy), no folks hanging over us so we could enjoy our dinner. Food was really good and not outrageously priced, and arrived really quick! Definitely recommend the "summer salad", a seasonal option with delicious tomatoes, peaches and cheese. Falafel burger was also good and tator tots were nice and cripsy. I would definitely go again. I thought the food was overall okay. Yes, everyone is correct when they recommend the burger and that seems like the best thing on the menu probably. Food seemed fresh across the board and overall seasoned okay as a general statement. Servers were nice and vibe seemed mostly chill even for kids and families. We also had the wings which were very mid in my opinion. They say they are smoked but sort of taste more like smoked paprika was added at the end and not like they were actually smoked in like a smoker or grill. The steak was juicy and flavorful. It's a very casual place where you can order using a QR code, if you're not siting at the bar, where the staff will bring your food out to you. My daughter suggested we try this place for dinner. Menu has lots of beer and drinks and the food selection is limited but typical bar type food. If you like a quiet place to eat this is not the place to go. It was very very nousy but my granddaughter slept through it all. It's difficult to review this place. To jump to the punch line, it's a worthwhile spot but there are a lot of caveats. In my opinion, the only way to enjoy it is if you're a certain demographic (read affluent or affluent wanna-be) and come in with specific expectations. The service here might be one of the coldest in the area. If they were to suddenly replace the wait staff with robots, I feel like warmth and interaction would actually increase. I realize this day and age that this is probably a plus and a feature for many, not for me unfortunately. There are also weird quirks that belie the price for your meal. Extra sauces like ranch (which incur a cost) are given in comically tiny paper containers. Also, good luck flagging anyone down to get napkins for your meal or if anything is wrong with your order, you will never and I mean NEVER will get checked on after your food is dropped off. For the privilege of this service, a default 20% is pre-selected when paying your tab on your own. To be somewhat fair, this problem of service seems to be a wider issue in the area, as other establishments in this plaza have the same "I'm too cool for you" attitude, so perhaps it's a very localized cultural thing and weirdly no one else seems to care. (see note about it being a plus to a lot of people above). I think the service experience at the bar is slightly better but not by much. Ultimately the food and drinks are good, but I would deem them excellent if the prices were not has high and there wasn't so much nickel-and-diming on top of that. It's a good place for large groups to have casual conversations or to just hang back. In many ways I get it, there is no real incentive to go the extra mile (maybe in an effort to live up to the Standard name?). It's a place I do come back from time to time given the food quality and "no fuss" environment. I'm sure business will always be good, but it's a little frustrating to know that the place is holding itself back over tiny things, can't help but think that it's intentional. It would definitely incur more visits from my behalf and recommendations to friends if it was at all a welcoming place. read more

Standard is 100% a Raleigh gem. I was here super often during the Summer. They have a pretty impressive outdoor patio and the interior is also spacious. I love how easy it is to order here, you just scan the QR code at your table and order. Soon enough your drinks and food arrive. It's perfect if you have a toddler who doesn't have the patience to wait around at restaurants, but you need to get out of the house. The food is really delicious! The roasted onion dip is perfect for sharing as are their tots with truffle sauce. The smash burger is pretty awesome, as is the skirt steak taco. Their standard green salad is also surprisingly satisfying. Bonus, they also have a kids menu with a hot dog on it, my son usually goes with that. They also have a great variety of rotating drinks. Bottom line: The burger and tots were pretty good at Standard Beer + Food, but the no reservations/picnic table style seating for the most part/service model was just not a positive for me personally. Averaging it all together, I come out with 3 stars, maybe 3.5 stars if we had half stars to give. The Deets: We had a meetup of work colleagues in Downtown Raleigh (DTR) recently and it was decided upon to hit Standard Beer + Food. I was eager to try this one out as I had never ventured here. Entering in, there are many picnic table style type of tables inside and a few booths. There are no reservations so you wait for a seat/table if one is not available when you go inside. Luckily after waiting a few minutes in the bar area, we were alerted that a booth opened up for use. So we found out that not only the menu is by QR code but the actual ordering is by this same QR code. Each person does their own individual order on their phone. Now I realize in the recent past, this service model may have had its necessities and uses but in 2024, I am not a fan of being my own waitstaff when I sit at a table for a full meal out. The reason was more apparent as the night went on as there were different runners bringing each individual order out at varying times and instead of saying the person's name that ordered the one item being brought one at a time at different times, they stated what the food was they were holding. More than one of us ordered a burger with tots, so it got a bit confusing and we realized the burger orders were placed with the wrong people. If you have that much staff that it's a different person each time a different order is brought out to the table, then maybe there is enough staff to actually take the orders AND deliver them, one assigned to the table for consistency? Just a ponder on my part. Food wise, it was the most positive point of this visit. The charcuterie board was good and enjoyable. The Standard Smash Burger was pretty tasty. The tater tots were OK (tots are always good most of the time, right?) but they were not the best tots I've ever experienced. I noticed one of my colleagues did not touch her sandwich at all and it went back to the kitchen pretty much intact. I had ordered a Diet Coke and it came out as one small glass bottle of Diet Coke (? 8 oz ?) with a small glass to pour it into, so I am guessing no refills on a small amount of soda costing $3 (I didn't even try). Absolutely appalling experience -- avoid this place at all costs. The "water margaritas" at The Standard Raleigh made my entire group sick, and one of us ended up in the hospital. The nurse who treated her said she had seen the exact same issue before with this restaurant. The health department had to get involved. Instead of showing an ounce of concern, the owner brushed it off and blamed us for "drinking too much." He never once asked how we were doing or tried to figure out what went wrong. To make matters worse, the restaurant bullied women in our group into changing their honest reviews. The treatment was condescending, dismissive, and flat-out sexist. That kind of behavior is disgusting on top of already endangering people's health. This place is trash -- careless with food safety, toxic in how it treats customers, and run by people who think they're above accountability. Raleigh has plenty of good restaurants. Do yourself a favor and spend your money anywhere else, because your health and dignity aren't worth the risk here. And to the owner: you should be ashamed. You don't deserve customers, you deserve a permanent health department shutdown. read more

Stopped into Standard Beer & Food one afternoon while on vacation after taking the downtown historic trolley tour. They're located in a convenient little plaza with some other great local businesses. When you walk in, it looks kind of like a small food hall or brewery type setting with very open seating and a separate bar area. We chose one of the long tables since we had kind of a big group. The tables were small (width wise) and the bench seating was very uncomfortable to sit at for a long time but those tables were the only option that could seat our group. We ordered via the QR code on the tables but found out later that we did have a server which was a bit confusing. The truffle fries were great and a HUGE portion; great for sharing. I also ordered the cobb salad and the sauce that came with it was delicious. My fiancé ordered the tacos which were good but a smaller portion than the other food items we all ordered.
