Update... I ment to do this, a few years ago. This particular oil leak was never fixed. In fact, I found out not too long after that, that the rear main seal does not go out on a 2001 740i. And that the actual leak was coming from my valve covers. Also my present mechanic I told me back then, that there'd be no way mechanic who wasn't a friend or relative would separate your engine from transmission and complete a rear main seal gasket replacement with other cars being worked ahead of you in one day.... For only $500. So, guess who got ripped off for $500 and still has the same oil leak to this day read more

Joe is the best! Super friendly , knowledgeable & courteous. He used to work at a Mercedes dealership so he knows his stuff. But charges way less than the dealership. They are also very attentive with helping drive your car out front to you for pickup, even though the parking lot is quite small, and is just a straight lane into the shop. Its difficult getting your car serviced as a female, that doesnt know too much about cars. I always feel like people can make up nonsense about what my car needs and how to repair it. But I dont get that feeling with Joe. He gives you the information and recommendations and lets u make your own decision. Not pushy at all. Oil change for my mercedes is about $110 here. Plus service b is an additional $100. Hes able to order parts needed super quick for same day completion of your repairs. U can wait in the office waiting room, stocked with water & comfy couches. Or pick up your car later , Joe will call u when its ready. Yesterday I was at the mall with my bff and kinda lost track of time and arrived a few minutes after closing but Joe was super patient & friendly with me. This place is legit! My Audi was side swiped by an 18wheeler and Auto West Collision repaired it. After a week of driving, I heard something loose in the engine. Turns out the engine bolt unscrewed from the mount. Long story short, my mechanic, Auto West and Stevens Creek Audi couldn't replace the part for me, so I was frustrated. I went to this shop because AAA recommended it. My car needed a starter. The car had an oil leak (from the valve cover gasket) I've driven it without any problems for 4 years, it also has approx 170000 miles but overall a great car. So the shop did a diagnostic check they confirmed it needed the starter replaced so they went ahead and installed my a new starter for $700. The evening I picked up my car i.didnt even make it home before it stalled and had a hard time firing back up... I went back to Star Automotive and they explained to me that my car now has an air leak in the engine, the crank shaft sensor needs replaced (which ironically enough is located right under the starter, could've been bumped or damaged during repairs?) And basically the car isn't drivable until I get this new air leak issue and my valve cover gasket resealed.. and thatll be roughly $2000. I explained to the mechanic that the car was drivable until my starter went out his response was it came in on a tow truck... how do I know it even ran? But mechanics never get to test drive cars before they break... so STAR AUTOMOTIVE laughed me out of their office that day claiming my car had all these problems before but if that were the case why didn't they mention that during the diagnostic test. read more

With little time to spare, my Mercedes was overdue for a service. I got off work early today and took a chance hoping I could get fitted in. No problem, I was in and out in 45 minutes. Not only was the service performed, but to my surprise the burnt bulbs in one of the brows, and a brake light, was replaced; and, the rear difusser that I hung up on a curb three days ago and holding up with wire, was reinstalled and looks factory new. Replacing the bulbs and reinstalling the defusser at no extra charge. I have been going here for three years and always received good service, having first done so upon recommendation from a trusted friend. I came to know this Star Auto Services when I had an incident to due bad weather in Louisiana and had to tow my car back to San Jose. The work: replace engine's short block, which came with one-year, 12K miles warranty. Since then, I had almost 100K miles put on the car (!). When you think of the word "Mercedes" you think of classy, reliable, rich, great service. Uh huh, this place that "specializes" in Mercedes Benz is anything but, its trashy, dirty, sketchy, and they ignore you! Being the spoiled brat that I am, I drive a SLK 230. I came here on a tip from my mom since she usually gets her car done here. I needed to get a couple taillights replaced and top off my coolant. When I drove in, there was No line of other high class mercedes benz drivers, so I rolled up to the front and waited for someone to come out. And waited, and waited. Hold up, common business sense says that when your a mechanic and your store is empty and someone drives up, they are probably a customer and you should see what they need! This place lacks common business sense. Eventually the owner, Joe came out and I made eye contact with him and said I needed my taillights fixed. He pointed his finger at me signaling me to wait like a dog and walked off. So I waited while he was chit chatting with his co workers about who knows what. I waited for another 15 min and no one came by. Eventually I got the message that my business wasn't wanted and backed away and drove off. You're already driving a Mercedes, don't downgrade to a crappy mechanic, go to Beshoff or something and be treated like the King/Queen you are. read more

I am now a loyal client! Recently my check engine light went on. Joe and his technicians spent about 3 hours checking it and couldn't figure out what the issue was. He asked me to come back the next day and leave my car there so he can have a longer/closer look. I did. He spent the next 2 days trying to diagnose the issue. He couldn't find the issue but he also assured me that it would be safe to drive. The thing that made me really respect how he runs his business is that he didn't charge me a penny for all the work he did. I own a Mini Cooper and if I took it to the dealership I would have had to pay $250 upfront just to have them look at it. Boo on dealership prices. As a professional which is employed in a Customer Service based industry for greater than 10 years, I truly value the importance of quality Customer Service. In our society of busy work/life calendars it is very difficult to find avenues for getting good feedback on a new vendor. Due to this, I often use "Yelp" for a quick reference for anything ranging from gas stations, Medical providers, or online retailers. I usually only review the "negative/less than 3 stars" reviews because its these reviews in which a consumer has truly had an unpleasant experience and is passionate enough to document the experience to alert the general public to at least "be concerned" before they make the purchase. It is not intended to blacklist any vendor, but I use it similar to the eBay "feedback" forum concept. Having said all of this, I recently experienced AMAZING (5STAR) service at Star Auto. I highly recommend them for their timely service(Joe and his team are outstanding). Especially for auto-mechanics, in my opinion, the general consumer has a greater chance of paying a higher rate or for additional services to their vehicle for repair than needed. Usually the consumer just pays what the mechanic recommends. I've had 2 recent experiences with Star Auto in which I was in desperate need of assistance and they came through with 5 stars(the last time they even fixed something small that I didn't even bring to their attention and was not charged). I've been a loyal consumer to another body shop for 10 years, and I always thought they were good, but Star tops them and I believe I will start coming to Star for all my cars in the future. Joe, no frame damage whatsoever. You did not put the car on a machine, but merely eyeball it. Piercey Toyota did and it is perfectly laser straight. The black coating you saw underneath the car wasn't oil; it was rust proofing spray confirmed by 4b Auto and Piercey Toyota. Instead of looking at one thing and assuming the worst, please look at the whole car and use proper equipment before making a blanket statement of the car's condition. I have all paperwork confirming no accidents and no structural damage from Piercey Toyota. Please be professional about future PPIs. Protecting the customer provides security and peace of mind; however, professionalism and impartiality will bring integrity. Wow - have I got a unique and great experience with Star Auto. I bought my 2006 Mercedes Benz E350 from Edwin at Star Auto in San Ramon in 2010. Great car, great service. No two ways about it. I've had two issues with the car. First, there was a transmission mount that was bent. Edwin up in San Ramon fixed it fast and inexpensively without any drama. The car I received was an entirely new driving experience. An awesome job. About a year later, the car started acting weird, and eventually became un-driveable. The issue became critical in the South Bay. Edwin directed me to Star Auto in San Jose. I had AAA tow it to their San Jose location. While the root cause was much worse than I had hoped and prayed for, the speed, efficiency, and forthright honesty it was dealt with made it a positive experience. Turns out, my intake manifold was falling apart and screwing up my valves (yes, a pricey repair), but Joe at Star's San Jose location walked me through every step and gave me an incrediby fair price for the parts and labor required to get the E350 back on the road. I originally had my car towed to Star Auto sight unseen. After picking up my car after repairs were complete at Joe's operation, I am truly impressed. I am extremely please with Star Auto Service. Per a recommendation from a friend, I took my car (2004 Nissan Maxima) to get a quote to fix front end noise and shifting problems. I was a little skeptical at first, since my car is a Nissan and not BMW or Mercedes, but I decided to get a quote. As it turns out, I needed to have my clutch replaced. :( I knew this was probably the problem, but was hoping for something else. When I saw the quote I was happy with the pricing, but still a little wary about my car not being a Mercedes or BMW. With Joe's (the owner?) assurance that his shop could do the work, I decided to have to clutch replaced. After the repair, I took the car for a test ride. I am a car enthusiast, and am extremely knowledgeable about my car (I'm on the forums a lot, and have my own BMW diagnostic tools, not just a simple OBDII scanner). Enthusiasts take great care of their cars, and we're constantly looking for a great shop because we typically go above and beyond the factory recommended maintenance. Star Auto Service is the place. Their customer service is impeccable. Joe is outstanding, honest, and upfront with his quotes and service. Despite being very busy, you don't get the feeling that your car is being rushed through. They definitely do their jobs right. Star Auto's pricing is VERY reasonable, and their mechanics are technically knowledgeable. For those looking for a more technical review, read on: As an example, I recently brought my BMW 135i in to have them diagnose a complex problem, the very common, but expensive to fix, turbo issue (low boost 30FF code). Many places would read the code and simply jump to the turbo as the problem. Ouch on the wallet! As an enthusiast, I know that there are MANY other things to check before going to the expensive option of turbo replacement. Star Auto did just that. After inspecting the vacuum lines, they started with a boost leak check to ensure the vacuum is good. Passing that, they then swapped the turbo solenoids to ensure that's not the issue. Passing that, they even went as far to inspect the ECU wiring. Everything checked out. Unfortunately for me, it looks like it's the turbo after all. But how many mechanics do you know would go through all that trouble (4+ hrs of diagnostics) for you? Finally, and most impressively, there was no pressure from them to fix the turbo because the car drives just fine otherwise. They were ok with me waiting till I've saved enough to have it replaced later. Wow!! And that's why Star Auto receives 5 stars. read more
