Oh, woe is me all you too cool for anything other than east side or Rainey street kids. This bar has been nicely renovated and has a very laid back feel to it. The bar itself is very open and airy with side windows that open all the way. I like to get a table out front for happy hour( $2 domestic beers) and people watch, or grab one in the back to watch a game or play washers. Yes, it can get a little crowded on weekends, but that that seems to be the only time. My favorite part--- Wednesday cheese plate all night! With any purchase of wine (even a half bottle) you get a delicious mix of artisan cheeses, grapes, prosciutto, crackers and honey. I contacted Star Bar on Instagram to hopefully make a reservation for a bachelorette party to watch the Packers play the Eagles! I was contacted shortly after and they reserved a table under the bachelorette's name "Future Mrs. Harris". They had signs at the table for her as well! They also bought us our first round of beers and a round of shots, how amazing right?! They went above and beyond for us and the customer service was outstanding! This USED to be one of the more dive-like lounge bars you could find in this area of 6th St and it was like a time warp back to 1960. The only thing keeping it from being a total dive was that it was kept far too clean and sparkly inside. Of course like everything else in Austin they decided to hell with the old and in with the new and did some whacky renovations to modernize and fancify this joint up. So now it has a 1960's exterior and... Red Alert... Red Alert... Oh no captain we've created a temporal paradox the implications of which we might never know!!! The Star Bar was my wife and my first stop upon our arrival for a quick trip to Austin, staying at the WorldMark down the street, in very easy walking distance. We sat at the outside bar, while a light rain fell outside the covered patio. They didn't have quite as robust a selection of local brews that I had hoped for, but they had enough. While the wife sipped her Pinot Grigio, I had three different Texas-brewed beers, which were all decent-to-good. Our bartender for the evening was a nice guy, who seemed like he actually enjoyed his job -- which is pretty rare in this day and age. Maybe it was the friendly, likeable staff that contributed to the overall vibe of the place, which was cool, but not "trying" to be cool. If I lived in the Austin area, especially near 6th Street, the Star Bar would probably become one of my regular haunts. I recommend it. read more

That's $10 for each "large pour" glass, way better than neighboring watering holes and my bartender was fabulous. We were here for a bday party and everyone was eating the chicken and I was hungry and wanted real food. I asked the bouncer in the front if it would be okay if I could get a veggie taco across the street and bring it back so I could still hang out with my friends. After deciding which drinks we wanted, my friend went with the pica piña margarita, while I boringly went with an amaretto sour. Her drink was great!! Very tasty with just the right amount of spice. Mine was good and as expected. I got another drink, modified and it was soooo good! It's great that they're so dog friendly. Worst manager ever. Seriously, not 1 person carded the whole night--I arrived 6:30 for a Ga Tech game--and at 9 pm my wife arrives...not allowed in. Keep in mind, I'm 46 and she is 33. Man, this bar reminds me of an old boyfriend that you see on the street eight years after the breakup, only to find he now has a receding hairline, a beer gut and that laugh you once thought was cute and sophisticated is far more akin to a horse guffaw. Especially when he is surrounded by much hotter guys who have more locks, more personality and less bullshit. I hadn't been here in literally about 8 years till my friend came in town this weekend and asked if we could go meet up with some of her friends there for one drink. That's about one drink too many, in my book. Let me back up. About 7-8 years ago, this area of W. 6th was just starting to be built up. There was no Candyland-sized Whole Foods, no cool bars besides Momo's and no restaurants worth coming over here for besides Hut's. Star Bar was a rare find - a swanky-ish lounge that had faboo martinis, a good clientele and easy-on-the-eye decor and men perfect for a girls' night out. My friends and I used to refer to it as "Stahhh Bahhh," because we felt fancy saying it and we felt fancy being there. Now, times have changed, and W. 6th has become one of my favorite areas in Austin - from the swanky hotel-type bar at Bess to the laid back patios at Opal's, Little Woodrow's, Key Bar and Tiniest Bar in TX, you really gotta step up your game to compete with these hot new contenders. You gotta trade for Kevin Garnett and go all out in some multiplayer deal if you want to compete on this side of 6th. Fast forward again. So, we walk into Star Bar and they might as well have been piping the Debbie Downer (wahh wahhhhh) theme music from the moment we hit the bar. It was 9pm on a Saturday night - plenty of other places were hopping already - and including my friend and I, I could count the number of patrons on one hand. Two of them were these road-hard old cougars at the far end of the bar talking loudly about some "asshole guy that keeps fuckin' me over!!!" Classy. There were a couple of creepy old dudes at the bar sipping the hard stuff and eyeing us as if we were jailbait (we're not). Then the bartender takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r to get us our drinks. I asked my friend how hard it was to uncork their dirty house Pinot and pour me a tipple? He was nice enough, but the problem is he just seemed BORED. Like, out of his mind bored, so that the physical manifestation of this mental affliction was to move in ssssslllllloooooowwww mmmmooootttioooooonnnn. We stood there for about 10 minutes waiting, and keep in mind we were the only ones in the joint asking for a drink at the time. Then we went out on the patio. I was starting to feel the ennui set in. It was like someone had popped the happy balloon, like the place you take someone to break up with them, or the place you take someone to fire them. It's like a black hole of suck. The topper was the convo I heard going on behind me, with what looked like a cute couple on a first date. She was talking about being from the Dallas area, and seeing as how I was already so blase I was close to breaking off my wine glass and drawing the shards slowly along the base of my neck, I listened in. Here's how it went: Girl: Yah, so I lived in Dallas, then we moved to Newport Beach, then Grapevine, then back to Newport Beach. But really I consider Newport Beach my home, I mean that's where I spent my formidable years. Guy (after a pregnant pause): You...mean...your formative years? Girl: NO - my FORMIDABLE years, silly! Guy: Uhhhhh....the phrase is "formative years," not formidable. Formidable means intimidating, like a formidable opponent. Girl: No, I swear I'm right about that! (OH DEAR GOD SHE'S ARGUING THIS??? I must have fallen through the sidewalk and into the eighth circle of hell) Go look it up! It's formidable! Heehee! Guy: Uhhhh, I don't think so... And so on. This went on for approximately 10,000 minutes, or until my ears started bleeding out from listening to this ditz try and carry on her losing battle like a wounded, wet cat. At that point, I could take no more, and I realized with a tinge of sadness that the glory days for this once-regaled mothership of swank had set. In its dimly-lit, abandoned and slightly depressing wake was a bar that could no longer compete with the younger, hotter models down the street. We settled up our tab and headed down the street to Key Bar, wondering what it was about Star Bar that we had fallen for in the first place. Or was it just that once upon a time, we didn't mind settling? Ah, the things you do when you're young... I had moved on, but I wished it well anyway, told it I would call it, but then never did. So... this bar sucks. First off, NO GUEST LIST!!! Ugh... that means anyone can walk in REGARDLESS of who their father is!! NO!! I am most certainly NOT intermingling with peasants who's fathers are not a big deal like my father. SECOND, There is no dance floor!! I did NOT spend $400 on sunglasses which are opaque yet allow me to see at night but are still reflective and make me look like a celebrity to not dance!! THIRD, and most importantly, They actually want you to walk up to THE BAR to order drinks!! NO!! I want to walk in and not be asked "If I want a bottle", I want to be asked "what kind of bottle are you ordering, sir?". Worthless. Oh...wait... hold on... I kind of hate all of those things. My bad. Star bar is...(wait for it)..... a "BAR". I'm pretty sure that means its one of those places where drinks are served without a fire show, DJ or a guy playing a bongo drum suspended from his bare chest. Given that definition, Star Bar is pretty much awesomely great. The staff is always friendly, the drinks are always potent, no one ever spills my drink because he is fistbumping because he wants to be just like "The Situation" and I can carry on a conversation with my friends. The patio in the back is quieter and a great place to sit with a date after a dinner or to just have a more secluded drink and the front patio is more for people watching and general ...um... "Bar-ing". Yeah, I just made that up. Star Bar is a great place for a happy hour, drink with out of town guests, Saturday night or just any night of going out. If people in your group want to go to a club or live music venue or "get their dance on" there are probably better choices but Star Bar is definitely in my usual going out rotation. read more

Extreme bar makeover! When I was here last it was a little grungy, with vegas style carpet, cheap nachos and round laminate tables. I actually dug it -- but it didn't draw me back -- way too many Texas grads in there for my liking. Fast forward to now and this place has done some serious extreme makeover. It's modern, it's sleek, it's sexy, it has a huge rad patio, lots of gorgeous tall men and Wednesdays they give you free cheese. We could also be describing my ideal home. Whatever. The drinks were priced reasonably, the bartender was really nice and the only drawback is that it can be pretty loud when folks are all chattering and flirting and guffawing with laughter at one. Formerly known as "the fun-sucker" to me and all of my friends, Star Bar was purchased by a new owner, revamped, and is looking mighty fine. Best part for me? They serve half bottles of wine and have FIVE (FIVE!!!) different choices of champagne! The new bar is a much better layout and most of the walls are made of glass which makes for a much more open feel. I like everything about the new changes. A+ new guys. read more

The drinks are reasonably priced, strong, and tasty. They make a meaaaaan Mexican martini - not as good as my favorites, at the Daily Grill, but a close second - and they give you the shaker, too, so there's tons of it. And I actually like the fact that the place isn't crammed full of hot young bucks and buckettes doing the meat market thing. I work at 6th and Lavaca and watched Star Bar's recent renovation with bated breath as I anticipated how good or bad a place it might possibly be. Friday night after work I stopped by to have a couple of beers as I waited for 6:30pm to roll around. See, a group and I had planned to have dinner at 24 Diner at 7pm, so I needed something to keep me busy for a couple of hours. Since Star Bar had finally reopened -- and because I'd read here that the clientele tends to be older and the place fairly quiet -- I decided to give it a whirl because it sounded like my kind of place. Well, the clientele has remained the same age, but this place seems to have gotten a jump start, I'm guessing from curiosity stemming from the recent renovations / new ownership. Hell, it brought me in. However, I did notice that most of the people there at 5-6:30pm Friday night were regulars. They knew the bartenders, and vice versa. What I mean by "jump start" is that, not only was it crowded as all get out, but it was LOUD. Frat party loud. I could hardly hear myself think to take Yelp notes on my napkin. Yeah, I'm a dork like that. Not one person in Star Bar appeared to be under 30 years of age, yet all of them acted like they were one step away from donning togas and jumping into a beer-filled inflatable pool. Conversations I overheard included: Conversation #1: Upper-50-something man: "Dude, the Aggies are going SO DOWN tomorrow, man! Damion James will make you pay, bro!" Early-30-something man: "Nah, man, y'all are going down this time!" Attention, upper-50-something man: Learn to speak your age. You trying to talk like a 20-something just ain't groovy. Jimi Hendrix hates you. And Damion James probably does, too. Conversation #2: First 50-something man: "...I was going to fix her another 7 and 7, but she was already ready to go." Second 50-something man: "So'd you do her?" First 50-something man: "Hell yes! Best $5 I ever spent." Okay, okay... I added the very last line. Point is, I couldn't understand how Star Bar attracts 50-somethings who act like they just turned 21. The decor was nice and somewhat upscale (think Domain), and it's not a bar you typically hear 20-somethings raving about. I assume these older guys were here to try and attract younger ladies, and that they were speaking like 20-somethings to make themselves appear younger (didn't work). I also wonder why none of them approached me. I'm typically a magnet for men who are old enough to be my father. At any rate, Star Bar felt like some weird time warp gone horribly horribly wrong. Star Bar was quite crowded that evening, but I still don't understand why it was as loud as a monster truck rally in there. The volume on the music and TVs was incredibly low. Even when I first got there, before it got crowded, it was louder than a t-rex's orgasm. Bad acoustics? Dunno. Perhumps it was nothing more than just excited weekend behavior. The bartenders were great, and that's the only reason I'm giving this place three stars. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and nice. I never sat in beer thirst in the crowded 1.5 hours I was there. I didn't think the draft beer selection was that great. They had two beers I like (ZiegenBock, Firemans #4), but the other draft beers were forgettable: Bud, Bud Light, Corona, Fat Tire, and Dos Equis. They may have had one or two more draft beers, but like I said, they were forgettable. The most interesting five minutes I experienced in Star Bar was watching some ESPN guy interviewing Herschel Walker, and I could've done that at home. The cons far outweigh the pros here. Glad I tried it out, but I won't be in any hurry to go back if I want to keep my hearing and sanity. And so I will continue my search tonight for a 5-star 6th St bar. read more

Rewind to 2002 - After living in OWA for a few years, decided to stop in one evening. I'd been eye-balling the place with olfactory orgasmitude for a while. The ladies looked upscale, but the guy demo was squarely polo and chino. Stroll in wearing my favorite jeans, t-shirt, and cowboy boots. Ten minutes into my first Anejo, I'm being scalded by "the caustic eye of judgmental-ism". Not sure (and just don't care) which demo I fit. Prolly my own? But anyway, "this ain't no Austin crowd" I thought to myself. One dude eye-balled me so hard, my anus got inflamed and I had to ask him to ease off. He did, after some urging from his buds. The staff is uncivilized. ...in the best ways :) I love Star Bar. It's my favorite place to cheer on the Packers, throw back some happy hour cocktails, or try a new, delicious craft beer. - GREAT place to catch a game; they have TVs galore. GA-LORE. - Fantastic tap selection. There are about a dozen rotating craft beer taps; they tend to lean towards West Coast breweries and limited edition releases (Stone, Green Flash, etc.) but that's super refreshing when everywhere else is the same 4 local breweries on tap. The staff knows their sh** when it comes to beer, and will happily provide you a taster of any beer. - The clientele gets a bit bro-y Friday/Saturday nights, but where on 6th between I-35 and Mopac doesn't? - The staff is the best. Super friendly, knowledgeable, and they make a mean jalapeno margarita. - Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ trailer is out back. UNFF. Handmade tortillas rolled fresh to order, smokey n sweet BBQ sauce with a hint of spice, melt-in-your-mouth brisketfoieaw I can't. It's so good, it's not fair. read more

What a difference a good drink and a decent crowd makes. The bartender last night had the gin and juice ratio down and the bedside manner to match. The crowd was mixed in a good way, and no one got territorial about who was sitting in what chair (see previous review). Someone even offered me a swig of Prosecco off their birthday bottle. Fun! Visited the new and "supposedly" improved Star Bar last night - what a disappointment. While they did dramatically improve the patio areas (both front and back, and now side!), the end result is a hodge podge of styles that just doesn't work. Gone is the awesome retro 60s style, the small windows, the low ceilings and cramped feel. This has been replaced with floor to ceiling glass and and all new layout for the bar and seating that leads to total grid lock. Almost impossible to walk around this place, even when not that packed. Furniture looks like they went to a garage sale and just bought whatever they could find. Star Bar used to be the place we'd go to chill with some really good and strong drinks either as we were starting up the night or as we were winding down - it was never a raging party, but that was a good thing. Now, Star Bar is just another in the series of lifeless bars in Austin, with no clear style or reason for being a destination. Probably the worst thing about the new ownership is the drinks - the old Star Bar was well known for some of the strongest drinks in town - no more. The drinks at the new Star Bar were lousy (weak) and expensive to boot. Avoid. Much better places to spend your money. read more

A friend suggested we meet here last week and, after best night "served" ( drinks were plopped down on the table, without so much as a simple "enjoy!") by a dis-interested and rude server, who really became rude when my friend asked for another drink, as he'd discovered the glass his was in was dirty. I have a feeling Star Bar passed in and out of the trend spotlight quickly and is now more of a casual hang-out with neat wall sconces than the uppity joint I'd always assumed it was. It's honestly nothing special (unless special=neither dirty, packed nor noisy), but the bartender is quick, knows his drinks and knows his regulars (not me, but several people around me were clearly on a first-name basis). My vodka martini, dirty, was just right, and getting the shaker's remnants made me feel like I was getting my money's worth. Other drinks were basic but spot-on. The crowd seemed a bit older and calmer than the bars a few blocks east (with a few raunchy New Year's exceptions), and the skills behind the bar will keep me coming back. read more

Definitely has a faithful crowd of regulars, none of whom I know. While it's a good place to stop in for some hard liquor if you're based at Woodrow's which offers only wine and beer, I have never spent more than 15 minutes or so at Star Bar. In my experience, Star Bar polarizes people (you love it or you hate it) for reasons I can't explain. I fall into the latter camp of bar-goers. High points: Star Bar retains several of the most experienced bar-tenders in Austin. They really know what they are doing and have years of professional expertise to back it up. Management is very friendly and monitors the Bar's upkeep well. In addition, this bar possesses the largest candy bowl of all establishments in Austin, which is stocked-full of delectable sugary goodness. Star Bar is a great bar in the West 6th area. It honestly has the best of both worlds when it comes to 6th street. If you wanted to, Star Bar can be your go-to get wasted place. Not too expensive, fun music and atmosphere. The outdoor patio would be a great place to meet new friends and holler at people walking around. On the other hand, if you wanted to just have a chill night, this bar is great too! Indoor seating can be intimate and close, the drinks are well priced, and they also have a back area with big jenga for some fun! I've never been a big fan of this bar for some reason. I think it's the crowd it attracts at night, a crowd of what my friend calls, "Cheesedicks", which is funny, because while I love him, he kind of fits right in. So imagine my surprise when I went to meet some people there last night for happy hour and it wasn't crowded, and the people that were there were older (like, my mom's age), and we had an excellent time and too many excellent martinis. Fun bar with tons of space, mostly outside. Nearly every table had a great view of a TV and just a quality Austin bar on 6th. Beer list could use some work, but at least they had a few IPA to keep me happy. At $8 pricey for the area, but considering they have food and TV can't complain. This is a really fun place to go to on any given weekend night. On Sundays, it's the BEST place to go. I came here for a friends birthday party qnd the crowd mix in here ranged from young professionals to drunken frat boys. The layout is interesting with a side patio facing the street then a larger back side patio. The bathrooms always had a line which was semi irritating but what can you expect on a Friday night. There is a bbq food truck on the back side patio. Their food was delicious and made your mouth water just smelling it. The staff was very fast with taking orders at the bar and making the drinks. I ran a tab and they didnt make any mistakes so that's a nice thing to see. I think a happy hour here would be a nice place to meet and have a few cocktails but I dont think I would come back on a Friday night. Too crowded! read more
