I had gone to the "old" Star Bar, and was less than impressed. Recently I went to the new Star Bar, and the server took my half-full (or empty depending on your outlook on life) drink and poured it out. I complained, and after talking with the bar manager my drink was replaced. Still, I would have preferred to just drink the one I had w/o going through the hassle of getting a new one. After the renovation the Star Bar doesn't look or feel that different to me. So, luckily I'm not rating Star bar on the clientele because the stars would be much less. Seriously though, when did the customer base stop being the suit and tie crowd? I really like this place, mainly because they have split bottles of La Crema that I can close up and take home with me after I realize I'm hammered drunk and shouldn't be in public anymore. Go here if you want to snag a table on a Saturday night and don't expect to hear great music. The bar staff is as attentive as you would expect down here so don't be too picky. The music when I went was hard to hear and honestly not that interesting. It sounded like some alternative organ music. Prices are acceptable and nothing brutal. I usually come here on Sundays to check out the games. The outside patio has been redone recently and it is a definite upgrade! The mimosas and bloody mary bar are a great deal at $4 on Sundays and they accommodated the game we wanted to watch even though it wasn't on the official list posted. The bar also uses Tabbed Out which is an awesome app to pay for drinks (my promo code is W4A5B3) and helps knock down the price of your tab. LOVE bars that use this app!!!! The reason I have a star knocked off is that they open AT noon on game day! Open at 11:30 or 11:45 and let us chill and get settled prior to the games starting. Especially when it's cold outside. Last Sunday was cold and we were wanting to get in to get warmth and the people inside really didn't care or acknowledge us while we were pacing around outside and looking sad. If you'll notice Star Bar is 3 stars but the last few reviews are all very positive since they seem to have overgone some sort of restoration. Not really sure, but I can tell you for a fact this is not a 3 star bar (see how I worked the name in there? It's like when you're watching a movie and they say the name of the movie and you're like ... coooooool). 5 reasons for 5 stars for (5) Star Bar: 1) We asked the bartender to change one TV from an NFL playoff game to a college basketball game we wanted to watch. He complied right away. 2) Said bartender was very nice, giving my wife a beer to taste before ordering. 3) For a sports bar I was extremely impressed with their wine selection. We're talking some great bottles available by the glass. Hell I wish restaurants offered some of these bad boys. 4) Their beer selection is also very wide with some great stuff on tap. 5) Finally you can go out back to Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ (also 5 stars) and get some delicious food. I finally had the famous Hail Mary (their supersized, heavily garnished bloody mary). From the many pictures I saw and having read all the hype, I was expecting a crown of garnishes with many pickles, burger, bacon, meatballs, and shrimp. Instead what I received was what looked like two nuggets from McDonalds, a cold burger that they said was from P.Terrys but I will say was quite suspect to also being from McDonalds, 3 pickled veggies and a skewer of various Hostess style processed doughnuts? What kind of monster decided to pair doughnuts with a bloody mary????! The bloody mary itself was sub par and tasted worse than the ZingZing bloody mary mix, I threw most of it away. Total bummer. I've wanted to review Star Bar, but have been unable to think of anything good or bad to say about it. As I read the other reviews, it occurred to me that Star Bar exudes this inexplicable pulse of vague indifference and indecision. No one can put their finger on what it is to love or hate about the place....which I suppose is a credit to their likely unintended vibe of mystification. In an attempt to deliver some useful information, here are the basics. 1) Great location - W. 6th Street, technically considered to be in the Warehouse District. Not at the heart of 6th St., but a great off-the-beaten-path-but-not-too-far-off locale. (You can easily walk here from downtown.) 2) Street parking, indoor/outdoor seating, hard liquor. I've never paid a cover, but can't say if this is the norm. 3) Very small interior; semi-cramped, but cool booths; dark, not in pub-style, but in an unappealing low-lit dinge. 4) Quick, competent bar staff. Moderate prices. In general, Star Bar is as unimpressive as this review. Blase. read more

I can't decide about the Star Bar. On the one hand, aside from thinking the drinks were probably cheaper somewhere else no more than a block away, I've always had a good time at the Star Bar and been impressed with the bartenders, service and atmosphere. On the other hand, I've never really felt compelled to put the Star Bar at the top of the list when deciding where to go for the evening. I think the big issue comes down to the fact that lots of places in Austin offer what the Star Bar offers for less money and in locations closer to everywhere else you might want to go when having a night out. So, while the Star Bar makes for a good spot to drop in and enjoy yourself, unless you are in the area, chances are you won't go out of your way to get there. Sorry to be so vague. (To be fair, a new Little Woodrows around the corner has infused the area with more night-patrons, so maybe I'll have reason in the future to give the Star Bar another try.) read more

My husband and I met at Star Bar in December 2005. As such it will always have a special place in my heart. Star Bar has done a remodel between that time and now. It appears they are starting a second major remodel in the back. I really do like how it used to be and haven't been a fan of this model. The cement bar, etc. I loved the old wood bar. I am hoping the third remodel will be good. What I love about Star Bar is how it has stuck around. In Austin, bars come and go but Star Bar is always here. The staff is usually very friendly and attentive. We hope they last forever and will continue to stop by from time to time. A good place for a drink. read more

Usually is my go to place to hangout and watch a packers game. Today my service dog was attacked by another dog apparently one that was having continuous issues with other people and because my dog was attacked I was kicked out of the bar and they didn't let me even finish my drink. He spreads his hostility to the staff who generally seemed apologetically more amenable to the business they are in, which is SERVICE. But whatever. Moved to Austin from wi, came in for the packer game at noon. They say they have the best Bloody Mary in town when it's just zing zang with vodka and a lime....also they don't serve coffee. I asked the bartender if I could walk some place close for a cup and bring it back into the bar. She told me across the street, once I got back they wouldn't let me enter with the coffee I just purchased across the street. This place is horrible. Horrible service, horrible crowd. I was having drinks with a few of my polite girlfriends and we were rudely interrupted by two douchebag guys that would not leave us alone and were harassing us physically and verbally. We asked to be left alone so we could enjoy our drinks and they refused and ended up saying how stupid and drunk we were and they were obviously heavily intoxicated. The staff, bouncers, refused to make them move or leave us alone, we practically begged the bouncers to make them leave us because we were starting to feel unsafe. The door guys took their sweet time to come over and were too busy talking and flirting with their friends to do their job. The staff needs to be trained better and maybe star bar shouldn't hire bouncers who are too lazy or don't care enough to do their job. Bottom line, I didn't feel safe in that bar. read more

I recently went to this bar for a friends bday bash. I am def not a patio girl, as much as I would like to be. I seriously hate the humidity and that sounds shitty...but you try having naturally curly hair and being in that crap. No point in even doing your hair for the night. UGH! Anyways, back to the bar.....I actually really enjoyed the patio. It was breezy and that helped. The patio is clean and nicely built. Does that make sense? Its not some crap hole on 6th and thats what really makes it shine. Then theres the "dungeon" as I call it. Talk about nice wallpaper and crazy pics on the wall. The Jaeger bombs were quite large and really good. Though they weren't 2 bucks like they are at the funky places on 6th. I guess you have to pay to play. Well this is about last night - opening day for some of the sxsw events and the app Curtsy was promoting at this bar. The bar itself looks cool and the staff is friendly, this review is about the event from last night - I hope you guys (Star Bar) can get in touch with these guys from the app (Curtsy). We got there by 8:15pm and they told us to wait about 15 minutes for the free drinks tickets. We did and in the meanwhile we bought our drinks - no problem at all! When they handed us the tickets, we order something and the server told us it was not allowed with the ticket. Well, ok. About 9:10pm we would finally use the promotional tickets for valid drinks, guess what, it was only valid until 9pm. 100% understandable this wasn't a rule from the server, who was friendly, nice and helpful all the time. I went to talk with one of the app guys, who was completely DRUNK. I just wanted to tell we had no chance to use it and they should have told us it had a limited time to use, etc. I've done events like that and a simple notification would make their "public" feel ok and avoid misunderstanding. Again, he was drunk and started a discussion and argued with me for a few minutes, being rude and almost trying to fight. His friends came to calm him down but kept saying it was peoples' fault for not asking what time that would finish. Guys, no problem at all you provide something or not, for 10 minutes or the whole night. But what an idiot attitude from this tall guy wearing a pink/red shirt and making completely the opposite than he was supposed to, which was to promote the app. Bad image given to the public, not something to repeat! I've now been here several times, and I can say for me it's definitely a happy hour kind of place. I can sit at the bar, drink some great craft brews, watch the game, and talk to the bartenders about sports and beer--they know a lot about both. Once the crowd starts coming in, I'll head somewhere cheaper and a bit more laid back. But up until 8pm, this place is a sanctuary for me. read more

This place is rough, lots of motorcycle gang types and cholos! It really makes me feel right at home! They used to have ghost pepper tequila and would be hilarious to buy ur buddy a shot of hell! I've been hitting Star since it was velvet and plush inside before the huge re model. I hear a great bunch of d-bags go on the weekend nights... I wouldn't know cause I'm there during the week after work if I go. One time Wyatt Erp busted out a six shooter and shot our beers open. Bottom line! Austin sucks and I don't understand why people keep moving here. Star bar is no fun, Austin has virtually zero entertainment and the chicks are like I'm in Boston.
