We had a nice experience here. We browsed for a bit on our own and then a young woman working showed us some products and talked to us about customization options. We ordered some very nice chairs that we customized with a fabric seat color that wasn't in stock. They warned us it was a 3 month lead time, and they were accurate with their estimate. We did get chastised for taking photos of furniture, but when we explained why we were taking photos, they helped us. They didn't want us taking pictures of the prices of the furniture (I'm assuming so it doesn't get posted online- they were having a sale), which was understandable. The price for the chairs was great, and lower than online - and online I wasn't able to find the same customization options. Recommend! read more

My friends and family consider Star Modern Furniture the best kept secret in Bay Area for the best European furniture selection and price. My wife and I made several purchases over the years, three amazing European sofas one of them a luxurious Natuzzi from Italy, and some other fine pieces for the house including Calligaris. The service is knowledgeable, caring and impeccable! This is an old school family team that carefully curates EVERY PIECE of furniture and decor in the store, and takes the kind of pride in their work that is so rare these days. The showroom has a solid selection and some truly killer deals for the discerning clientele, but if you cant find exactly what you want or the color or material that you want - they have some amazing catalogs that allow you to take your purchases to the next level. Some of our purchases were straight from the showroom, but several of our pieces had to be special ordered. For the furniture that had to be special ordered the wait was reasonable and well worth it - furniture delivered as promised when promised. I do want to say a couple of words about the negative reviews these folks received - I know the types of people who left the negative reviews, I've seen them at the store several times - entitled intolerant idiots who couldn't tell the difference between the fine Italian furniture and disposable IKEA junk, or the self-proclaimed "designers" that shop at Living Spaces - the "McDonald's connoisseurs". Bottom line, if you want the best deal on the high end furniture and if you are not an entitled douche, you should check out Star Modern Furniture, and grab some sushi afterwards to celebrate! read more

I've been furniture shopping for a couple of weeks, looking for living and dining room sets. Part of this process has been to try to decide which direction to take the look of the place -- it's got mottled brown tile, giving it an earthy feel, but a granite/stainless kitchen that dominates the dining/living room area, giving it a contemporary feel. What to do? So I went to a whole bunch of furniture stores in the area -- no Levitzes, or anything, but all the cool independent stores, including Sigma European Furniture (the others will get reviewed as well). Sigma does well on the contemporary look -- their catalog makes me feel like if I were to buy all my furniture there, I should also slick my hair back, wear tight black clothing, lower my VW and pump techno music out of it, and become a fan of David Hasselhoff. No, really, it's a lot of cool stuff that's very different from what you see in all the normal stores; some of it is just a little over-the-top. So I went to their showroom -- turns out, it's quite small (big surprise, in downtown Mountain View even that small showroom must cost a fortune). The owners (I presume) quickly asked if they could help me out, but they quickly got frustrated with my lack of decisiveness. I wanted to be able to describe what my place looked like, and have the sales person give me a few ideas. That did not happen here at all; I ended up just asking for more information about whatever pieces I saw out there, of which there were relatively few. Before long, the male owner began the pressure sales tactics, first trying to convince me that no matter what I buy it'll look fine, regardless of shade of wood finish, etc., and then by taking the "I'll give you a deal if you buy today" business, which always bugs me. So I left. They have a very unique catalog of contemporary furniture; I recommend looking at their website and going in only if/when you have some specific pieces that interest you. Oh, and their prices seem to be in line with what you'd expect to pay for such furniture -- I hesitate to call it "reasonable" because the entire genre of products seems overpriced to me, but Sigma's inventory is reasonable within that context. read more

The owners are friendly and easy to talk to. Not pushy and genuinely trying to help, get you the best deal for your needs. I needed to buy a bed. Came in. Looked at the catalog and the owner suggested a few choices from what I was looking at. I also bought a different mattress from online company. The owner assured me that what they have is going to work better as his whole family swears by this brand and sleep on them. And he was absolutely right. After going with the other mattress for a few weeks I came back and purchased the mattress he suggested. Worked out much better. The bed we ordered was delivered in a timely fashion before the date it was promised. It was put together in our room. The owners are a true pleasure to deal with. Highly recommend!! read more

One star is too much, zero star would be too much too! They deserved negative five stars for their RUDE attitude. I walked in thinking that I need a side table and a chair for my bedroom. There were few ladies sitting at a table watching TV and chatting, no one greeted me. That's fine, I like to browse by myself anyway, so I just walked around, not even touching anything. In few minute, a lady finally saw me, and said loudly: "Be careful about your ice cream." No "please", no "hi", no "thank you", her tone was very cold and rude. I was stunned! I've never ever been treated this way in any stores. And my ice cream... c'mon, it was in a cup which I almost finished it; not to mention that I didn't even get closer to any of their much-more-expensive-than-a-potential-customer furniture. How rude! So I immediately left the store, and finally understood why there was no customer in the store at all. read more

Possibly one of the worst shopping and customer service experiences I have ever had. But -- if youre looking for pure comedy on how NOT to run a businesses, i definitely recommend stopping by. The owner, his wife, and daughter are all pretty rude. Their "european" furniture is actually made in China and falls apart after about a year. Then they will blame YOU on misuse of the furniture. Solid NOPE! This store represents everything I hate about traditional, local business. Their stuff isn't that great, and their prices aren't great either; and you're expected to haggle if you want a fair price. I suspect there's a reason this place is empty. I got yelled at for taking a picture of an item I was interested in. It's ironic, because I think it's likely I may have bought it. That treatment basically makes my likelihood of buying it go from 'maybe' to 'nope.' I understand that this is a common restriction in these kinds of stores, to prevent comparison shopping. But honestly, if a store doesn't have my best interests at heart, and is honestly just trying to rip me off with an above-market price like a high pressure used car salesman, I owe them nothing. I live in Mountain View and over the last few years have bought a few pieces of furniture from the store. My most recent purchase was a very nice leather sofa, on the whole considering the quality of the product I feel like I got a good deal, even after looking at similar couches elsewhere. The negative ratings here are cracking me up. I suspect they are coming from folks who are uncomfortable interfacing with different cultures and don't understand what it means to hustle for a living. Someone gave an indignant one-star-rating because the owner wouldn't sell a piece of furniture for 2/3 the sticker price ($1800-$1200). Another was upset that the owner didn't want them eating an ice cream cone on a sofa. The sofas in here are pretty high-end so what do they expect? My partner and I purchased a beautiful bed, living room set, and some odds and ends. Way higher quality than IKEA, contrary to what some people are yelping. We negotiated a discount and free delivery, since we were so close. If you want customer service, or discounts, then give Star Modern some business! Buy multiple things, help them move some product, and they will work with you. The delivery guy was a 10/10 and FAST when he set up the furniture. I gave him a healthy tip for his work because that's how doing business in this way works. I got a good deal on some high quality furniture because I built a little respect between the owner and I and actually bought a few things. I didn't walk in acting like he owed me something off-the-bat. I was taking my mother furniture shopping for some kitchen bar stools and decided to check out this store. On the outside of this store they frequently drag furniture out to display in hopes of luring customers in. They had this dinning room set out on display as well as a couch. As we got closer to the store, my daughter started slipping down from my hip to my leg and so i struggled with her until I go to the front door of Sigma European Furniture. That's when I decided to sit on the couch, let my daughter down, and wait for my mother to catch up with us. The second I sat on the couch with my daughter, the owner of the store comes running out of the store, YELLING at me and SHOOING me away like some stray cat!@%!$^ OMG! He yells "go away! don't sit there! don't touch the furniture!" I was so offended. I went next door to get a coffee. When I returned and couldn't find my mother, I wandered in the store and found my mother on a kitchen stool with the owner standing by her side trying to close in on a sale. My mother was struggling with her English as I walked in and told her not to buy from this guy! He argued with me. I said, "mom, he told me to leave and not touch the furniture. He wouldn't let me sit on the couch outside". He quickly comes back with "But I DIDN"T KNOW YOU WERE A CUSTOMER!!!" I looked at him as I dragged my mom out of there, "Then you have a LOT to learn about doing business!" I had a fun time reading the bad reviews... And I actually agree and understand some of them. The owners are Russians with what I call the "older communist mentality" - so I totally get the cultural clash with the US, esp. liberal Bay Area :-) Where the customer is the master of the Universe. However, I believe they are working on their business skills to fit the US culture. Because my experience was not that bad even I witnessed some fun comments made to other customers (knowing the Eastern European culture, I was not shocked, I was more amused and I know they are good people in the end lol) Let me give you my opinion, pros and cons: Pros: - They have a lot of furniture on display. It is rather modern / contemporary. And their catalog from Modrest is huge. - Quality is rather good. Of course it is not Harrods if this is what you are looking for... I did not check all their furniture but is rather good and "heavy / sturdy" (not like Ikea). It is similar to what you can get from AllModern.com - except with much more choices. - They were rather nice to me. And took time to show me some other models in their catalog. The mom was rather quiet and friendly to my kid. The dad was nice too, showing me some other models he had on his phone. I was rather touched by that because he was really searching for something I liked. - They had some nice painting reproductions (not sure if for sale)... I'm not an expert, but I think it was Chagall. Very nice in any case. Cons: - They may not seem "welcoming" but I don't think they aren't. It's just their way not to express it. I know here in the US we are used to the most happy fake welcoming... Sometimes way overdone. I laughted when I read a review of a lady coming with an ice cream who got shout at. I understand they should maybe tell it more gently but in a way, I understand them... Imagine if people start eating there, let their kids play, run, touch, climb on furniture etc. When I was a kid, my parents were strict with me when we visited such stores... Now I am myself shocked sometimes when I see kids climing with their shoes on beds (OK it's Ikea.. but still..) I know kids are not always easy to control, but I still manage to keep mine nice and respectful of the things in a shop. In a way it also shows, they do care about what they sell and that it is made of some quality... If it was cheap and crap... they would not care?!? Anyways, I think it is more a matter of communication and cultural fit. - Even if it is "European style" - I'm not sure if all of the furniture is made in Europe. A lot is made in China (but hey folks.. your iPhone is made there too... does not mean it's bad quality) - It is not cheap... but not crazy either. There was a table I liked from their catalog. Their price was 900 something (negotiable) - I was able to find it online at 850 with delivery. But their price was still cheaper than overstock.com for example. So I still like to buy where I can get it cheaper... of course... But think about it... Do you think a 1 bedroom rent in Mountain view worths 3.5K? Maybe yes... So If you can spend that much money for your 1br rent.. you won't starve if you overpay your sofa $80 and contribute to the economy of small businesses. - Can't take photos Anyways.. Bought bed and mattress from Star modern furniture. The owners were very friendly and showed what they had available at their showroom as well as in their catalog. They weren't pushy or trying to upsell like few other stores I went to. They were knowledgeable and explained to my husband and me the Benefits of one bed over another. At the end we went with their suggestions and have to regrets. The bed and the mattress were delivered earlier than promised and put together in our house. We had excellent experience buying a convertible sectional at Star Modern Furniture. Prior to coming here, we looked through various online and physical stores, including Ikea and Living Spaces, but had no luck finding what we needed. The owner and his family were extremely helpful, and went above and beyond to get us the perfect sofa. They didn't have the sectional we ended up buying on display at the time, but were able to show us the pictures and fabrics, so that we had a good idea of what we were getting. The price was fair, and the furniture was delivered and installed within 1 week. The sectional is gorgeous and exceeded all expectations. We saw a stool we liked here, declined the floor model (which was scuffed), ordered a new one ($140), and were called to pick it up a week later. When we went in, we were presented with what looked like the floor model: scuffed, no bag, no box. When we asked whether it was new we were told it was. When we asked where the previous floor model was we were told it was sold. We'd already paid, and no amount of arguing did any good. One of the owners is extremely rude, to boot. Avoid. read more

The furniture here for the most part is quite modern. However, the customer service is about as bad as it gets. They have a very arrogant air about them and likes to belittle other furniture stores stating that only their store provides top quality furniture. The male owner even went as far as saying "we are not like chinese stores! we have quality furniture!" Love this furniture store in downtown Mountain View. I've been buying furniture there for almost 8 years. They sell mostly contemporary stuff, which is cool and exactly what I'm looking for. Although they don't have much of a showroom space to display models, they have a set of catalogs of quality Italian and local manufacturers. I've been looking for Calligaris furniture in many stores in Bay Area, and found prices in this store hard to beat. Sometimes an order may take a couple of months to deliver if they don't have the items in stock, which is fine considering the low price and great service. If you know what you want, buying furniture there is a breeze. If you don't see anything you love in the showroom, just describe what you want to the sales person and ask for catalogs. RUDE! The store owners are reprehensible and have no customer service sense. My girlfriend and her parents and I had come to this store a few times to look at dining tables, chairs, and sofas, but they are way over-priced. The owner is desperate when explaining the features of his furniture, but does not budge on price. We declined his $1800 offer for a dining table set (table+6 chairs) since we have a $1200 budget, but he insults us and says that we can't have the set for free! $1200 is NOT free and is a lot more than the table or his customer service is worth. On a previous visit for sofas, presumably the store's daughter is also very rude and does not bother to work with us to get the furniture we want. All around, they are the wrong family for this kind of business, since they don't have the sense to think that a little kindness could go a long way in sales! read more

My experience with this place is similar to others' complaints about their absolute lack of customer service and outright disrespect in some cases. They were more than happy in taking my credit card number and were able to provide quick delivery, but in any sort of contact, they were never responsive, I always had to follow-up with them to ensure everything was in-order. Months after my order now and I need to get my bent bed frame replaced. It's been over a month and I still have no idea whether a replacement order has been put in with the manufacturer or not. We spent hours trying to find the right furniture for our new home - maybe 20 furniture stores. We wanted something modern and affordable. We could not find what we needed. Then we randomly found this place and were amazed by all the nice things that they have. You need to pay attention because the show room is not that big and there is a lot of things so it might be difficult at the first glance to find what you are looking for. But once you pay attention, you will find great products, good quality and good prices. We bought a sectionable, armchairs, chairs, dining table, lamps. Everything was not immediately available but they delivered on time and were diligent in returning our calls and giving us updates. Good experience overall. I have recently purchased six leather dining chairs and I had a good experience. I am Italian and I LOVE Italian design furniture and this store carries a nice selection of items. I know that design furniture is very expensive. Star Modern Furniture sells also good reproductions that are not made in Italy and are far less pricey. The owner has been very honest with me regarding the fact that my chairs are made in Indonesia and not in Italy. He promised they are of real leather and will not peel off. To prove his point he showed my samples of real leather material along with faux leather ones. My previous dining chairs from Scandinavian Design literally feel apart after a few years! Star Modern Furniture owner promised my new chairs will be delivered (for a reasonable fee) in two weeks and they actually arrived after only four days! read more

Buyer Beware! Good: Some beautiful furniture and accessories at reasonable prices. Bad: The store does not stand behind products it sells. Rudeness. Lies. I bought a $999 (sale price) sofa as a housewarming present for my daughter. The owners, who thinks he is the best salesman on Earth, described this piece as Italian-made. Within half a year the frame sagged and became barely usable, but the store claimed that their distributor gives only two-month warranty on this sofa and the store would do nothing to exchange the piece, take it back, or fix it. More than that, the salesman insulted my daughter saying that she misused--not exactly the words he used, but you get the idea--this furniture and he would be ashamed to show the pictures, which she brought to show what the sofa looked like, of this broken piece. Moreover, he then claimed that this furniture was made in China and he could not have told us that it was made in Italy. So, now my daughter is stuck with a thousand-dollar piece useless piece of furniture. Caveat Emptor! read more

We went there on Jan 22nd with my 6 yr old girl to buy her a barstool. My girl was excited to sit on a nice looking stool and swerve it around. The store lady was making a weird face as if my little girl has committed gravest mistake by sitting on the barstool and swerving the barstool. Then she mentioned to me to take care of my girl. I said. I understand it is your store, but on the same note my girl is checking out which barstool is comfortable for her since we are buying it for her. The lady retorted and said my girl has to be careful, she can't swerve it around since it will touch other furnitures. BTW, the shop is densely cluttered, there is hardly any decent space between furnitures. I replied back to her saying that - she is just a 6 yr old, for which she again retorted that she too was a 6 yr old once! Another store person, probably her Dad an older gentleman intervened, but he said we have to be careful. Careful for what??!! After all these experience, I called my wife and said, we are going out and not giving any business to them and yes we were careful about that! I did thank the older gentleman and we stepped out. I drove all the way from Oakland to come see a leather sofa set they have online, after emailing them about it. When I arrived, I was a little put off by the crammed nature of their "showroom". While I'm snaking my way through the single room filled with modern knockoffs lit by awful fluorescent lights, the owner was yelling at his employee in another language, which was extremely unprofessional and made me want to leave as soon as possible. He finally asked if he could help me find something. I asked about the sofa set I came to see, which he asked me brusquely to pull up on my phone. Once i showed him the picture (remember, I had emailed just a few days before this and let them know I was interested in seeing it in person), he shrugged and said he didn't have it in the store. When I mentioned I couldn't buy something without first seeing it in person, he got angry, and said said I could go see it elsewhere, and then come back to him and he would give me a better price. And then he tried to sell me a different sofa set from the one I just drove an hour to see - one that was pretty horrendous and cheap looking - saying "it's much better quality", implying that the merchandise he himself has on his own website is not good quality. What a joke! I would not go back to this store for anything. The owner treated me like I was an imposition the entire time. Clearly "customer service" is not in his English vocabulary... read more

I second all the reviews here about poor customer service. They refused to believe me when I said that their deliveryman damaged the piece of furniture I bought from them. He also left a sharp screw on the floor of the room where he delivered the piece, which was my baby's nursery. If you do buy from them, I would watch their deliveryman like a hawk while he is installing/ assembling your purchase so that they will accept responsibility where it is due. read more
