I'm going to admit that I've not been to Star restaurant for more than a decade. I was not a fan of the old one and we only went because, you know, kids. I envied our friends who had experienced one bout of food poisoning and never had to go there again. Anyway, having heard about the new place and the good reviews, and wanting local places to thrive in this little city of ours, we went last night and it was fabulous. The tornado potatoes appetizer was absolutely perfect. I could eat that near about every day. Both my partner and I had pupusas, and we couldn't have been more satisfied. Also? We were a very large party and my friend's family had the majority of the back room reserved for the birthday festivities. Diana was very helpful and I really very much appreciated her best-in-class service! I had the Guatemalan beef dish with tomatoes, onions, and peppers. It was very yummy and I loved their tortillas as well. Another friend gave me one of her chicken wings to try and that was delicious as well. I'm def looking forward to trying more of their dishes! They asked if that was a good thing. * food is very over charged and is flavorless. *You have to pay like $3.00 extra if you don't pay with real cash because the system is not theirs. They have to rent their's to collect payment from customers. They said other restaurants do it, but it's hidden. by far a GREaT place to eat , the variety of foods they offer truly is a mix of latino americano food, with one delicious flavor after another. the portions are perfect-they are creative with their meals and drinks. the staff are all genuinely nice and gracious. the restaurant is clean, and you cannot find better prices for the quality of food and portion size (great value!). read more

We had a delicious meal! We started with tornado potatoes which was my least fav of the meal but still good. My son loved it. I'd try the other apps next time . My husband and I shared Tortilla de harina de Puerto Barrios ( black beans, chorizo, pork , chicken and steak) and the grilled pineapple with shrimp, beef and chicken in a tasty garlic tomatillo sauce. The portions were great especially the harina plate. I'm normally not a huge fan of chorizo but it was the star of the plate , my husband thought so too. The fries we crispy and well seasoned . My son got the chicken nuggets and refried black beans and rice on kids meal for $7.99. My son loved it too and ate it all . My daughter just had some of our food. We also had milhoja for dessert which was light and sweet. They have a life like horse statue in back that kids can ride which was a huge hit with my kids. This restaurant re-opened this year in March under new management. The food is very well prepared with high quality ingredients. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside and outside. The wait staff are dressed in costume like uniforms that reflect the Central American Western Theme. The food choices vary from typical American to Guatemala style food. Star restaurant has been reborn with a blend of latino flavors. They have remodeled the interior nicely with all new booths and a Southwest motif. They have the standard American food, but they also have Guatemalan food. We had to order the chicken empanadas, and pupusa and were quite pleased. We will be definitely be back. read more

Unfortunately, the food was not good. The pupusa's were amazing. The pork ribs were tough and the southern dinner was not good and the mashed potatoes were terrible. There was too much spices. The staff was very nice but I won't be back. Dining out is so expensive these days that the food needs to be great for me to spend my money more than once. I had the 3 tacos. Meal was unremarkable, meat was dry, very stingy on the guacamole & sour cream. Lemon meringue pie was still frozen so I opted for the chocolate cake which was very good. Pretty disappointing. I was a regular before the remodel and this was my first time back. I was surprised at the new cowboy motif but will say the staff seemed to make an effort to smile a lot. Unfortunately the food was lackluster. I kept it simple with bacon and eggs over medium. Instead the eggs were way overdone and the English muffin was the strangest I've ever seen and non edible. We were hesitant to try the refurbished Star restaurant after all the one star reviews that were received a few weeks ago. We decided to give it a chance because it had been one of our favorites back in the day. We were delighted with the results! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, especially my husband's Guatemalan breakfast included plantains, which were absolutely the best, and refried black beans that were also the best we've ever tasted. The service was good and for a busy Sunday morning it was timely as well. If you gave it a chance the first week it was open try it again. We need to support small businesses, especially family ones. It was not a good lunch experience. The two menus were overwhelming. Decided on a traditional hamburger to share for the two adults, pancake breakfast for the child from the children's menu. The pancake breakfast was good but expensive, $10.99! The burger was not cooked as ordered and contained cheese, which we didn't want. It was $18.99. What is with prices with . 99? We had to ask three times for a plate to share the burger but the server struggled to understand English. The french fries were undercooked and we weren't offered a refill of water. When the bill arrived, it was incorrect and it took too long to receive the corrected one. The crayons and children's menu to color were very nice. The celery and carrot appetizer was a nice touch but the bread that came with it was hard and tasteless. It is unlikely that I will rush back to give it another try. read more

Trying hard to support a local business that doesn't care about the customers is hard.. almost ten people to work on front of the house, for not reason. 20 menus to get our food taken, 20 min to get our food. They sat on on a dirty table, the table clothed had redish prints on it, the food is so bland, all the dishes have a similar taste like everything is cooked with one specific ingredient that doesnt help disting the food. I have been here twice to give it a fair shot and was really disappointed both times. This past visit, I ordered eggs Benedict. The eggs were fully cooked, not poached, and there was about two cups of hollandaise sauce on top, which was so gross looking on the plate. What was once an old vacant building deteriorating on a main thoroughfare in Novato has transformed it into a delicious and clean new restaurant serving good hearty food. $20 bucks and I had a big lunch of a delicious sandwich named Novato's Favorite. We were very excited and had high hopes as our family wanted to try, as the sign said (Grand opening new owners) While walking in, you will feel the negative energy the place has. Our waitress forgot to bring the menus, and while taking a look, everything was overpriced. When we finally were ready to order, all the workers were talking to each other and didn't even bother to come to us and ask us if we were prepared to order; I had to get up and ask for help while we were trying to order, Not only did it take too long, but the food tasted like frozen packaged food, awful, and to top it all, they brought us the WRONG FOOD!!! Family diner with plenty of sunny booths! Waitress was attentive with ordering, happily took my special request and refilled coffee. Food was good. Not gourmet but remember you are at a family diner joint :) I appreciate that it is not loud inside and I can hear the people with me. They offer a breakfast special under $6 a few weekdays. Our party had Benedict which was good and the fruit was fresh. Other plate was eggs as you like them and the person ordering enjoyed. I am very sad to leave this review because I loved the old Star Restaurant and I wanted to new version to be good as well. We arrived for an early dinner with my child on a hot day. The restaurant was empty except for 1 other table. We ordered ceviche, 3 tacos and pupusas as well as a kids meal. The waitstaff and the kitchen staff were obviously arguing while we waited for our food. We watched our plates sit at the window while the waitress went out to her car, someone had to got get her to deliver the food to the table. A second stag brought my son's meal towards the table then took it away, only so the waitress could return with it. The ceviche was horribly sweet, only served with 2 tortillas and 1 wedge of lime for $20. The tacos were ok, the kids breakfast was good, and the pupusas tasted good but left us with stomach issues. We ordered dessert- which looked good in the case. The tres leche cake was ok, we also ordered a flakey traditional dessert with cream that was obviously stale. At this point my son was a little squirmy so we asked for a box for dessert. The waitress brought the box and took away the dessert. She was able to bring us another which was good. The whole over priced experience was terrible. We will not be going back. read more

Before looking at some old reviews while I was eating my greasy omelet with tomatoes that were not on the menu I noticed how dirty the place was. The windows described by another reviewer look as Though they have not been cleaned in years. The hash browns used to be my go to but they were oily. I ordered English muffins and they tasted like white toast. No nooks no crannies no tast. Why do resterantes lower their quality to save money and not have a cleaning service clean their windows? They are headed down hill and they better take some pictures and sit in the booths so they can see why people are giving these reviews. I wish for the best but they need to take action. I would think that the flowers hanging from the ceiling would be a fire hazard. Hope their is another exit if a fire was to start. read more

I have been through a lot of changes with Star Restaurant but what the new owners have done is so cute. Imagine the first time you went to Black Bear Diner. Cute! Right?! This place now is so charming and quite an experience going. You'll notice the statue right away. The front bar is super cute. The staff are all attentive, smiling and friendly. I never really thought about going to Star for breakfast...because, well...there are a couple other favorites in town that are over the top really good to me. I gave this two starts because one, they make good tostones, and two their beans are "okay". However, the quality of the food wasn't great and the proportions are very small and the price is ridiculously high. I ordered bistec encebollado and I got boiled flavored beef with some caramelized onions, almost no rice and small portion of beans and very spicy salad. I will not be coming back. read more

Over the past several years, Star is not getting any better. Sadly, due to Mill's closing last month, our family has been to Star twice in the past month. It was our family's favorite place to eat for many years. My Mom was here visiting from Montana and wanted to go to Star for breakfast. Mom ordered her eggs over medium, as did I - the whites and yolk were runny - the waitress never came back to check on us, therefore I went to find her, and found the manager instead. No one ever came back to bring us properly cooked eggs. I vowed not to return, yet we did. A few days later we went in for lunch and practically served ourselves. Since Mill's closed it seems Star is much busier, but not properly staffed to handle the increased business. We grabbed menus and found ourselves a table. It took at least fifteen minutes for the waitress to come, she asked for our drink order, we all wanted water, when she came back, we placed our order. I ordered the chicken salad which was very good. My Mom ordered a sandwich, the bread had mold on it, she sent it back and ordered ice cream, my Granddaughter's ribs were dry, we asked for extra sauce, but never got it. It will be a long time before I return to Star. When word of mouth and reviews get better, maybe I'll try it myself before taking family or friends there. read more

Two of us went there for lunch. There were three people in the place. Took a long time to get served. My burger and fries looked pathetic. The burger tasted like it was cooked for twenty minutes. My wife had fruit salad and left half on the plate as it was not eatable. Fruit was too hard and not ripe! Gave it one star as we eventually got our food.
