I had my hair cut by Jessica. After I the first wash at home, as I was styling my hair, I noticed a very obvious "line". Like she had begun to layer my hair, but, stopped. Using the contact form on the website, I reached out to her. I told her I had noticed an issue with my cut, and asked her to reach out at her earliest convenience. Nothing. I tried again to get her to contact me. Nothing. I gave her two weeks to respond the first time. And another two after my second attempt. I paid 70 dollars for the cut and gave her 30 dollars for a tip. Which I think was generous considering I wasn't even offered anything to drink. For someone who says they have over 20 years experience, sure seemed pretty unprofessional to me. Hoping this helps someone else avoid my mistake in choosing this salon. After looking at the reviews again, all the good reviews are from 3 or more years ago. All the current reviews are 1 star reviews!! read more

I went here regularly years ago and saw a stylist named Lauren, and she was fantastic. She unfortunately left and suggested I try one of her coworkers on her way out. I had an appointment with her coworker once and I could tell she did not know what she was doing with very curly hair. I recently reached out to them via their website about two/three weeks ago and left them my contact information to see if she was able to just cut my bangs and trim my ends and I would make it easier for her by washing and straightening my own hair before the appointment. Figured shes used to straight hair and probably would have a lower chance of messing it up if I did that myself but I haven't heard one peep back from them. They either need to delete the website if they don't check it, or they simply just need to check it. Won't be attempting to make an appointment here ever again because this lack of response and feeling like she rushed on my hair the last time I came in, that I still remember feeling even though it was years ago. So sad there are slim pickings of good stylists in this area of Oregon who know what they are doing with my hair type. Wish Lauren was still doing hair. read more

As a refugee from the popular east side salon called Arabella, I was excited to try 15-year old Halo on the recommendation of a friend. My Arabella cutter had unceremoniously dumped me and I wanted a welcoming place where I would be treated as a valuable new customer. What luck! Using mr yelp app, I requested an appointment a few days later and got a quick callback from owner Diane. No fuss no muss and I was on the calendar for 3 days out. When I arrived I was immediately offered a beverage and a smile. Diane welcomed me, assessed the damage from my last Arabella haircut disaster (Diane remarked that my head looked like a mushroom and this was accurate and made me laugh.) Diane gave me a beautiful more "youthful" look and I left happy. It was a $65 cut that was worth every dime. read more

My stylist Bird is the absolute best. I've been seeing them for years and they've consistently done an amazing job with my color and cuts.

I made an emergency appointment with Bird Lindsey after making the mistake of trying to tone my own hair and completely botching it and turning my whole head a green-silver color. They fit me in right away, offering appointments that same day and the next day to insure that I did not have to walk around town in the embarrassment of what I had done. Bird was very attentive to what I wanted my hair to look like, and I decided to just give them the reigns and mold my hair into whatever vision they envisioned. This was the greatest decision ever! My blonde hair now has the most body and depth of color that it has had in years! I am in love with the new look of it and how I feel. It can be a struggle to find someone who really colors blonde hair well, and I feel like with Bird I hit the jackpot. Bird also won me over in the overall experience of being at the salon. I was offered wine, hilarious conversation, good music, and they even took the time to teach me how to style my hair they way they did after washing it. I have found my new go-to for my hair! This review is for Casey Cole. I am so anal about anyone touching my hair but I read some fantastic reviews about Halo so I thought, why not give them a try. I called in the AM to make an appointment, and Casey was available that evening. I originally wanted a dusting (microtrim) but lol I needed at least 2 inches for a healthy cut (who was I kidding). Casey is amazing with hair, but she was also great at making me feel comfortable in her chair. I left with an amazing trim and an express keratin treatment feeling fabulous. This review is for Bird Lindsay, who did the most incredible color correction for me recently. In addition to totally removing the weird band of dark (maroon?) color I've been struggling with for months now and taking me to a sandy blonde base that is much closer to my natural, they were able to preserve the health + strength of my hair during the lightenting process. Bird has also given me what I think was the best cut (long bob) I've ever had back in the summer. I dropped my girlfriend off here for her appointment on time and 30 minutes later she called me and said that the stylist wasn't done with the person before. We had a really tight schedule today and already rescheduled the appointment per Casey the stylists request, definitely not professional but not that big of a deal. Now we get a call about 45 minutes later asking where we were and we told them we left because they were not ready at the appointment time and we waited for 30 minutes when we were told it would only be 15. Casey was so rude on the phone, didn't even try to apologize or make any effort to make things right. How she spoke to my girlfriend was uncalled for and disrespectful. We will never do business at places that treat their coustomers in this fashion. What a disappointment. read more

I'm tempted to put 2 stars just because I liked my stylist's personality a lot, but the final product is truly only worthy of 1 star. Or less. I received the worst haircut and highlights of my life at this salon. The cut was a LOT shorter than I wanted, and it gave me oddly placed layers that I didn't ask for. The highlights were oddly placed- all on the top of my head, and didn't blend in at all with the rest of my hair. I've been getting highlights for over 10 years and trust me, this was oddly terrible-looking. Even worse, I was specifically looking to have the roots touched up from my last highlighting job, and that did not happen at all. When I put my hair in a ponytail, all you could see is untouched, dark roots. To their credit, the stylist attempted to fix it. The color ended up looking a little bit better, but the cut- oh, the cut. I didn't want her to come near my head with scissors after I had seen what she did the first go-round. So, I am just working on growing it out and some day I hope to somehow get rid of these awful layers. read more

I hate writing less than favorable reviews. However; when a random stylist tells me that my hair needs fixing and that they are the one who should do it...then gives me a less than good haircut, I feel the need to say something. I am one of those people who is used to paying $20 for a haircut so $40 to me is a lot of money. That being said, I expect a much better result for $40 than $20. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. I have long hair with layers that frame my face. The stylist from Halo (that sold me on coming in to see him) said he could "clean up the mess" the last hairdresser had done. For starters, I thought my hair looked pretty good up until then. Now, the right side of my face is completely choppy, whereas the left side is longer (virtually untouched by the stylists scissors). I said I wanted the layers smooth, so I can wear it straight. That won't be happening any time soon. I now have to wait half a year, for my right side to grow back out, so I can get it cleaned up - by someone else. I didn't express my concern or leave the salon unhappy, because I had the stylist cut my hair while it was dry and still had a little wave in it (versus paying to have my already clean hair washed) and couldn't tell how bad off I was, until I got home and straightened my hair. I'm surprised the stylist didn't wet my hair with a spray bottle, which could have been part of the problem. The stylist was actually very personable, but shared a little too much information about their personal life. I didn't mind, but now feel the story telling distracted them from giving the fabulous haircut they promised. On the bright side. I still have the length in back and feel the layers he gave me were decently done. I'm just unhappy with how much I paid to be unhappy about my haircut. read more

After a year of cutting my hair myself because of the pandemic, and after getting vaccinated, I decided to treat myself to a professional hairstyling. And what a great choice I made! I looked at reviews and locations and chose Sydney at Halo on SE Sandy. Sydney listed to me patiently, and she respected what I wanted and what I didn't want. For example, in the past, I've told hairstylists that I'm sensitive to fragrance and they'd still offer products, saying "Oh, it has very little perfume." Not true if you're sensitive to perfume. Sydney simply accepted that and didn't try to push any products on me. The cut and styling was not only what I described - it was better. I've never been happier with a haircut. Also, Sydney is very funny (and saucy). A totally enjoyable experience. The only problem is, now I can never move out of Portland. read more

I recently made my second visit to Halo, and I'm sorry to say I won't be returning My first visit was for a cut and color, and I was pretty pleased. The staff was hospitable and offered me a beverage when I arrived, and both the cut and color were to my liking. My second visit did not go so well. Fifteen minutes before my 4 p.m. appointment, my stylist called me to let me know she was running behind and would be about 15 or 20 minutes late. So I arrived at the salon around 4:15. When I arrived, another stylist (working on a client) asked if I had an appointment. I said yes and gave her my stylist's name. She said it would be a moment, so I sat down to wait. I waited until 4:40 -- twenty minutes past the latest time my stylist had mentioned, forty minutes past my original appointment time. In that time, the THREE other stylists working at the salon said not one more word to me. No one offered me a beverage, apologized for the wait, explained the delay, or checked in on me. My stylist called me around 5:15 to apologize and offer me 25% off my next service, which was nice and all, but not enough to get me to come back in this case. It was unfortunate that the stylist missed our appointment, but these things can happen. What was inexcusable, however, was the three stylists completely ignoring me for the 25 minutes I waited. I'm giving Halo three stars because I was happy with the work my stylist did on the first visit, and I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt that the missed appointment was an anomaly. That said, I just can't justify returning after being ignored by three other stylists for 25 minutes. read more

They say stuff like "Wow, I'm not sure what it is but your hair looks really good today" or "Gosh, your hair looks lighter than usual," but they don't realize I've gotten a cut and color. OMG! I read Rika K.'s review and she was totally right! I have really thick coarse asian hair. I'm always so frustrated with how frizzy my hair is. I've tried every Aveda product and none of it works as well as Bumble and Bumble. (I'm a total convert now.) I'm the type of person who used to go to Super Cuts or the Aveda Institute because I thought it's just my hair and I'll just pay less than $20 for a cut. But I always left disappointed. I can't believe I lived like that! ;) But the fact that I rarely get my hair cut throughout the year, I figure if I'm going to pay someone to do it, I want someone to do it right. You really do pay for what you get. So I made an appointment with Diane and it was sooooo nice to have someone know what they're doing. Then to have the hair come out awesome even after a couple months was the best feeling and such a great investment! Diane has a ton of experience, she's been in the biz for a while and really knows what she's doing. She listened to what I wanted and knew how to get it done! I can't recommend her enough! Decided I desperately needed to change that, and when I found a groupon for Amanda at Halo Salon I decided to give it a shot. GREAT decision!! Amanda is totally fantastic. I have a big issue with hair dressers who never seem to listen to what I actually want done with my hair, but Amanda asked me a ton of questions and made sure she knew exactly what I wanted before she even touched the scissors. She was so friendly and we had a great conversation while she cut my hair, and it turned out BEAUTIFULLY, exactly what I wanted. The other staff members were awesome too, offering me beverages and magazines when I first walked in, and the atmosphere of the salon is very elegant and relaxing. I go to one and think the cut is great and then decide in a week that it really isn't so great.. flat, sad looking, and not an easy look to keep up without a lot of time. When I went into Halo, I was accidentally given to Jessica due to a mix-up with the stylist I had originally been scheduled with. And.. I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID!!! Jessica is not only one of those super personable, super gracious people, but man can she cut a fabulous head of hair. Where do I begin? let's see...about 4 yrs ago a friend of mine told me to go to Halo Salon and check out this lady name Diane. she happens to be the owner and the most amazing hairstylist I've ever known! n trust me I know a lot! I have been to soo many salons and gotten soo many bad haircuts that I was about to give up! but the moment I got to halo..this nice friendly lady sat me down n listened to what I wanted! It is soo hard to actually get a hairstylist who listened to what you want. so I watched her like a hawk when she was cutting my hair...to see if she was gonna mess it up or not. then the most magical thing happened...she didn't mess it up!! instead she gave me the most gorgeous haircut with all the layers n pieces falling into place nicely and bangs that flatters my face including a thin honey colored highlights that warms up my complexion!! I was stunned beyond words....I was soo happy to have found my hairstylist for life! and what's even more great is that my haircut grew out nicely without me going back to the salon until 4-5 months later!! now that is a talented hairstylist! so ladies if you have thick coarse frizzy hair (I have the typical thick asian hair) u should definitely see DIANE! she is trained at Bumble & Bumble in NYC and let me tell you that she is a HAIRGOD! no one can cut layer pieces of hair like she does. the way she texturize n color hair its amazing! I have lived in Portland on and off for 10 years and have been to a LOT of salons, every Bishops this side of the Willamette (fool me once Bishops) and I have left disappointed from each and every one. I should have probably held out for a more well-known stylist, but I went on a blind recommendation by the receptionist who said this particular stylist was great with Asian hair. She was so wrong! My stylist was awful. Everyone seems to love "Mo," so I wish I heard of her before making my appointment. I agree with Senna on making sure you get a recommendation from an actual client instead of the receptionist. I ended up finding someone I totally love, though. Diane, the owner is amazing! This is a well established salon. Diane has been cutting hair for years, and she is still super passionate about her job which I found to be very inspiring. She actually takes the time to get to know exactly what you want and stuff that's going on in your life so that she can find the best cut. For example, I am going through a fairly stressful time in my life right now and I may be job searching in the near future ... Diane was able to learn by asking the right questions that I needed a low-maintenance cut that was professional for interviews but also fun and uplifting for me. I have Asian hair that is challenging to cut .... I have a LOT of hair and the texture is a little bit wavy. Diane knew exactly how to handle it. She knows her stuff. I love this place. The salon itself is clean, and has a classic look that i like. But more importantly I love Diane. When i first went to her i asked for something a little different. I wanted color that started dark brown and faded through to purple. She nailed it. The color is perfect and so is the cut. I love that the cut she gave me was something I could easily do on my own.
