Jill Gott has moved from Spruce to this cute little salon in Sellwood. I have to say, I really like this salon it is styled very nicely. Space is a premium here but they use their space wisely. There are four chairs in a row and then in the back of the room are the shampoo bowls and hair dryers/color processing stations. All of the employees lease their stations and are independent contractors. So you pay your stylist directly. They have bottled water and will offer other beverages as well. The restrooms are down a rather long staircase in the basement. It does not appear that there is an alternate way to get to the restrooms if you do not negotiate stairs. All in all a nice facility and friendly staff. I'll definitely be back here in the future. read more

I have been to this salon numerous times and seen Barb. She's an excellent stylist and colorist. I booked an appointment today with the salon owner, Barb, via the salon website. I had some late cancellations with her in the past, and I certainly understand it's not easy to fill an appointment at the last moment. However, at that time, I didn't know there was something seriously wrong with my health. I learned nearly five years ago now that I had a brain tumor. It was situated in my brain just so that it was affecting my memory, actions, and words. I've apologized to this stylist many times and explained my medical situation. The tumor was successfully removed with consequences. To have a business owner and professional stylist deny an appointment based on past experiences is wrong. I didn't have to disclose any medical conditions to her. I chose to so I could help her try and understand my actions. I've done this more than once. I can only draw one of two conclusions. She is incapable of forgiveness or there is a bias against those, like myself, with a disability. Please note: I am not making any accusations against Barb or anyone. These are strictly my assumptions. I've known her since she was a practicing stylist, and quite frankly, as someone with a disability like tens of thousands of Oregonians, I'm very offended. I can get to the salon and have money to pay for her services. I guess genuine apologies don't matter anymore. Very, very sad when you went to someone when they hadn't even made a name for themselves in the industry and stayed with them through the huge milestone of opening her own salon. Now, she doesn't even have the courage or decency to tell me why she won't take me back as a client. I will always wish her the best of success, but this is absolutely without merit if there is no reasonable explanation. read more

Long story longer. Came in, brought a picture off their website (that I later found out they didn't even do they just took off the internet), told them exactly what I wanted- and how I needed help fixing a color mistake from a hair school . The girl seemed to listen and was extremely sweet... she said yes! No problem! yet after she was done, what I came in for wasn't even addressed and my hair color looked nothing like what I asked for. She said sorry and wanted to try again and asked me to leave and come back 20 min later. I agreed and tried to have patience.. another round with high hopes. Although she was super nice my hair wasn't. I finally just had to give up and go home. After I got home and looked in the mirror I was so bummed. The cut and color were so uneven. I wrote the owner and sent her pictures. She asked me to come in so she could fix it. I went back in, explained what I wanted and showed her the picture off their site again. She didn't talk much to me, or explain that it would be difficult, not even that there could be different outcomes.. she just said sure let's do it. Her first attempt turned my hair an orange color, I guess from her trying to lift the color her employee did and from the original dye job I came in to correct. She asked me to stay longer so she could fix the orange color. After her second attempt that day my hair looked totally fried and even worse than what her employee did. My haircut was still uneven and the color even less blended .... she knew it didn't look good and I could tell she was over it so I said ok I need to go I've been here a long time and I'm just not happy with this. I reallllly wanted to like it and I tried to be nice about it. Yet I got home and looked in real lighting and it was just horrible. I wrote to the owner again and asked for my money back. I told her I understood she tried but my hair still didn't look good. She went on to blame it on the salon school who originally did it and then blamed it on her employee and told me to contact her, that they're independent contractors.. I was like wow if it was going to be hard for you, all you had to do was explain that to me- and not blame your employee or the other salon. Ultimately it's your name on the door. I understand you tried but it wasn't a good cut or color. I had to go somewhere else that fixed it fast and with ease.. - I try not to be difficult and I gave plenty of opportunity for it to be fixed..I honestly just wish your salon would have explained the possible outcomes before doing my hair- I explained in detail what I wanted done to my hair- It would have been a lot less disappointing if your salon didn't make it sound like an easy fix. Lesson learned A- Never go to a school for color. B- don't pay for a service unless your actually satisfied. Period. C- make sure the pictures on a salons site are their own, and depict THEIR actual talent. Sorry so long guys- but my advice is stay away from this salon unless you want something BASIC. read more

You will not be disappointed in your hair! Barb is an amazing stylist who definitely knows her craft. She listens to what you want in your hairstyle and is skilled enough to give you a cut that will work with your hair's natural tendencies (thickness, texture, wave, etc). You will love it. I have a short cut, and I will not trust anyone but Barb to keep it stylish and up-to-date. I also love her skills in giving me just the right color. Highlights are natural-looking, enhance my natural color, and are seasonally appropriate (she recommends a little lighter in the summer and a little more muted in the winter--it always works). I trust her recommendations for updating my style and color, and I never hestitate to recommend her when people stop and compliment me on my hair! read more

This little place is a gem for a variety of good reasons. First of all the atmosphere is friendly, relaxed, and welcoming. Every time I walk into Barbés, I'm greeted with smiles and I can feel a sense of welcoming. I don't get the feeling of being a customer, but more of a friend. Second, the work is professional. They really listen to what the customer requests. I mean, have you ever gone to get your hair trimmed - just a trim - and walked out looking so different you can't recognize yourself in a mirror? Well, these people don't do that. They do what you ask. Of course, they may make suggestions, but unless you say it's ok to shave half your head, or whatever you want, they'll focus on helping you get what you want. Third, the prices are reasonable. Had my first haircut in six months with Megan today. My ends were fried and I have had the bad habit of just throwing it up into a pony instead of styling, which makes it even worse (breakage!). Megan did a quick consultation and listened to everything I had to say and provided her suggestions, then gave me a relaxing shampoo and it was time to work her magic! Before I knew it I was all fixed up and ready for wedding season and summer toto start. She did a great job and I felt so glamorous when I walked out the door. Also, the salon is really cute and fresh. The location is super convenient too - on 13th but not right in the middle of the busy section so it's easy to find parking. After seeing multiple stylists in multiple cities, Jill has given me hands down the best pixie cut in **years**! Short women's cuts can be tricky; and her attention to detail was really impressive -- I mean, *really* impressive. Barb has been cutting my hair for years and she does a great job. When she first started cutting my hair, she was located within long walking distance. I value being able to walk to life's necessities, but she's further away now and I make the trip. Barb's haircuts look good and grow out very well, which I value. Easily one of the best hair cut, and beard trims I've ever had. Bridget spent a ton of time getting it right, I never felt hurried or a burden. I have very thick curly hair and it can be hard to cut and take lots of time. First experiences, especially when there are scissors involved, always feel like a gamble to me, and I don't think I have ever been more pleased with a haircut. Barbara is really an excellent cutter.
