The reason I docked stars is because I think service is one of the main selling factors for a business. Both my friend and I felt like the cashier was rude to us. He didn't answer my question and looked at me sternly (or just not warm) intent on me answering his question since he repeated it again. It has always felt a little pretentious, a bit hipster, and kind of expensive. However, the coffee has always been solid. My issue with their new location in Santa Rosa just doesn't feel right. For one, I feel like it's just too pricy, especially for Santa Rosa. It's hard to justify paying $9 for a 12 oz latte. Also, the space they're using at Montgomery Village has kind of an odd layout. There's a long hallway from one end to the other and they don't have anything in that space. It just feels like a waste of space if you ask me. The service was good here. I had a miso Caramel latte with oat milk. I like this drink because the miso caramel they make is really unique. My nephew ordered a Vanilla Shakerato, which tasted good but didn't really taste like vanilla. Not sure if they forgot to put it in or they put something else in. In any case, I probably won't come back here because I can go to other coffee shops in the area that aren't as expensive.

The woman helping me had dark hair, glasses, and beautiful tattoos down her arm. I ordered the sandwich and was asked whether I wanted a bagel or sliced bread. I asked about the croissant, and she told me they were out. I said that sliced bread would be fine. When I noticed I was being charged an additional $1.50 for the bread, I politely asked why there was an upcharge. Her response was, "Because we're out of croissants." I asked what the substitute was, and she looked at me and said, "Nothing." At that point, I simply said okay and accepted the bread. She then asked a young man behind her to take over, and he was very polite and finished ringing me up. A few minutes later, I could hear the woman in the back ranting to the staff, and she eventually disappeared into the back. I understand that everyone can have a bad day, and I certainly don't expect perfection. However, as a longtime business owner myself, I know how important it is to treat customers with courtesy and professionalism--even when you're having a difficult day. This interaction was completely unnecessary. I wasn't rude or demanding; I simply asked a reasonable question about a charge. I hope management takes this as an opportunity to remind staff that how you treat customers matters just as much as the product you're selling.

The latte itself was not overly sweet, although I personally would have liked a slightly stronger matcha flavor. Still, it was a great drink to walk around with while exploring the local shops and community around The Barlow. Between the atmosphere, the people, and the location, it's an easy place to keep coming back to whenever I'm in Sebastopol.
