This is the little quick serve café along the canal in the Indiana Historical Society. It is now operated by the old Jonathan Byrd's cafeteria that closed years ago on the southside. The Stardust Terrace Cafe is a perfect venue to take the kids after visit to Historical Society or downtown along the canal. They offer an assortment of kids meals for $5.50 with discounts for Historical Society members. The kids burger comes with a wide assortment of sides and a drink. The burger is served on a sesame seed bun with lots of fresh lettuce and tomato. The kids grilled cheese sandwich is made with an artisan bread. The cafe is a tribute to Cole Porter, complete with starlit ceilings. The dining room is cozy and comfortable and in December, it is adorned with Christmas trees from the Festival of Trees. In the summer, you can eat outside along the canal on the terrace. The service is outstanding at the cafe. The servers are super friendly and efficient. They are offering some delicious hot coffees for the winter months. I'll be back. read more

This cafe is located inside the Indiana Historical Society. The hours depend on the season from what I can tell. We were at the museum for the Festival of Trees. The cafe was open for a short time when we went. We ordered various drinks and cinnamon rolls. I had the hot chocolate which was ok but the cinnamon roll was the star of the show. The prices are high but you always expect that at museums. The cafe is run by Jonathan Byrds so the quality is good and the staff are helpful. The stardust cafe had to be one of my go-to spot. They service is top tier, shout out to Tanya and the food is excellent. My favorite is the Indiana BLT. During the holiday season (Christmas), they sale decorative Christmas cookies and they are delicious. read more

We ate inside and the tables were socially distanced and the cafe is practicing all precautions. The thought of a cheeseburger and fries was very tempting , but the special of the day was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans, which I never have, so I got the special. it was hot and yummy. Stardust went under new management sometime last year. There used to be a huge sandwich list and they used to offer quiches, now they have a more condensed menu - which isn't bad, but I do miss one of their old wraps. The new management has been doing a lot of social media outreach and post often on their Instagram and share their daily specials, which is great. I got their gyro special and a side salad, and my boyfriend did a build your own salad. The salads were using fresh ingredients, had a good selection of toppings that you could choose from (you can also add grilled chicken). The gyro was delicious. This is a go-to spot for lunch since I work nearby, and the service is always friendly and fast. They open up seating by the Canal when the weather is good too! read more

Great food, affordable prices, fantastic service. It's an excellent place to grab lunch when downtown or on the canal. Anything with the bacon jam is AMAZING! It might be one of the best BLT's I've ever had! It had fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and a great homemade mayo sauce not to mention the perfectly pressed bread with the nice cuts of bacon added to the mix. I got the pasta salad as a side and it came with a pickle. You could choose fries, fruit salad, kettle chips or pasta salad. All of it was very good and great quality. The two ladies behind the counter were as friendly as friendly could be! They have a great salad bar that they will make for you also! They will have a carving station as well!!! Oh, if you work downtown stop in they have a great coffee available as well! The lady said come on in and get coffee and expressos! I was a little worried a year or so ago when the IHS's café changed hands from the previous caterer, but I want to say the service and consistency of the food is even better now that it is managed by Jonathan Byrd's. They have a standard menu of deli fare, with a rotating selection of daily and seasonal specials. I usually get the special, and whether it's a Reuben or Mahi Mahi tacos, it's always been executed perfectly. They have something for all appetites, from kids, to vegetarians, to those seeking a heartier meal. The canal-side location makes this a great spot for people watching over lunch. I was excited to learn that Hoaglins Catering runs the Stardust Terrace Cafe especially since their space on Mass Ave closed. I ordered the turkey pesto sandwich which immediately brought back memories. I enjoyed the turkey, pesto, and swiss cheese combination. Service was fast given that the cashier was also the cook! Four for food and three for service. The crew in here (that I encountered) was half as enthusiastic about the product as I was. I quickly ignored the unfriendly welcome when I caught eye of the asparagus salad and dill potato salad...dill might be my herb of the year. Oh, what? The food that is served here is so filling, yet it does not make me feel as if I have a "food baby" when we are leaving. The portions here are a good size, especially for lunch. The atmosphere here is very casual and calming, which I love. There is also outdoor seating that sits right on the canal walk, so it makes a great scene when enjoying great company. The only slight complaint I would have about this place is its prices- its menu is not outrageous by any means, but I defiantly could do without the $10.50 sandwich combos. They charge an extra $2 if you want to substitute a side, which I find a little much. Overall, I defiantly will be coming back here and would recommend to anyone! read more

This is a museum restaurant and working on the canal I tend to go to a lot of these but this is the only one done by Hoaglin Fine Catering! Yum! You can get some of their specialty sandwiches here and also that (in)famous sundried-tomato pesto torte! It was a little more pricey than I like to normally spend for a workday lunch ($13 after substituting a salad and adding a drink) but the turkey sandwich was superb and the blue cheese asparagus salad was yummy. read more

The Stardust Café has always proven itself a consistent, worthy lunchtime destination. Located in the Indiana History Center (West Street between Ohio and New York Streets), it's a convenient walk from most places downtown and has BEAUTIFUL outdoor seating along the canal (weather permitting). Operated by Hoaglin, the food is always really good. One downside -- a sandwich and a drink will likely run you in the $10-$12 range. It's great food and always fresh, but I don't know that a daily trip here is in most people's budget. read more

Yeah. KILLER sandwiches and what appeared to be "homemade" chips. I can't remember all of the sandwiches they had here, but they even had a burger; there was a wide variety. I ended up having the Club sandwich, and I totally recommend it. For $10.50, it was well worth it. The fresh baked cookies were great, as well. We stopped in for lunch before a meeting. It was about 75 degrees and sunny. We sat out on the back deck and enjoyed the canal view. Lots of people walking through, but it wasn't noisy. A goose tried to share my lunch though. read more

It is with a heavy heart that I have to write this review. I gave this place so many second chances because I used to work in the building it resides in, the Indiana Historical Society, and was the closest option for lunch. The complaint is with the service. I could list the numerous times when an order I placed earlier in the day wasn't ready on time, but that is a special arrangement for IHS employees. But in my last week, everything went downhill. The first incident occurred when I ordered a salad with no dressing. One of the cooks had to exclaim in the nearly empty cafe "No dressing?!? Who in their right mind doesn't eat dressing?!" This is just out and out unnecessarily rude. As a former food server, I've ran across my fair share of bizarre food orders, and one doesn't say anything about it until the customer is gone or go somewhere the customer can't hear you, and say it there. I said something to the manager, which rendered dirty looks from the cooks and a retaliation. The final time I ate there: once again my early order for a grilled cheese was late. I was made to wait 20 minutes of my 30 minute lunch break to cook a two cheese and tomato sandwich. When I got it, the cheese was barely warm and not melted. I complained, and was thrown attitude back from the manager for not ordering sooner. Ordering at 10:30 am for a 1:30pm pick up is not early enough? For a half-assed grilled cheese?! The cook who criticized my food choice earlier in the week gave me a condescending smile from the kitchen. The retaliation was complete. And I was not given a refund. Final straw. I wanted to forewarn everyone that the cooks (for now) apparently have no respect for customers, and aren't afraid to show it. Management and the cooks are in a revolving door mode, so I have no doubt that they will be gone soon enough. So I might recant this review in the future. Normally the food is fantastic and I can totally recommend the curry chicken salad sandwich, the french fries (crack fries as the employees call them), the quiches, and the grilled cheeses - when they are fully cooked. read more

I don't know how it took me so long to try this place. Husband works a block from it and we would often bring JJ's sandwiches and struggle to find seating outside and end up in the grass when across the canal. Little did we know there were delicious sandwiches with plenty of seating for just a few dollars more right across the canal. My husband gets their club every time, it's simply superb. I've only been once but got a chicken Mediterranean (?) or chicken club.... I can't remember. All I remember is that I want to eat there again! read more

It's May 17, 2018 and I just noticed the cafe owner/management team updated the menu. The prices are unfortunately higher! Add another dollar sign to this establishment. :-( I eat lunch here a lot. The sandwiches are basic but good. You get chips and a pickle. The workers I have encountered are nice, and the fabulous patio is just one component (along with the grassy hillside across the canal and the canal itself) of an "outdoor room" that is key to keeping the canal a pleasant place to visit. But, I won't eat here so much anymore because the cost is higher than what it should be for what you get. read more
