SUPER. Spicy. GOODNESS. Chili - This was seriously the best chili that I've ever had in my life! Although it was extremely spicy and I had beads of sweat piling up on my nose, I could not stop eating it! It was so yummy! Side note: If you need milk or cuban bread to help tame the spiciness, ask a waiter/waitress...they'll hook you up! Jambalaya - This was also so amazing! Everything was cooked to perfection and all of the spices went well together. Any time that I've had jambalaya in the past, the chicken had been overcooked. I felt that here all of the meats were cooked well and the shrimp was perfect too! Although, there could have been more rice added to the dish, I will not complain. The fewer the carbs the better! I also had leftovers that could probably last two days...that's how large the portion was (or maybe I was stuffed from the big bowl of chili)! 4.0 Stars Location Overview: This great restaurant can be found in Old Hilliard off of Main St. Across from Sunoco Gas Station. The decor on the inside of this establishment is pretty cool. You most definitely get that cuban vibe here. Customer Service: The customer service by Sally was out of this world. She was very friendly, gave us some history on the restaurant and gave great recommendations on what to order. Quality/Quantity: The quality of the food was pretty damn good. I most definitely lived for the refried beans in my burrito. There was a lot of flavor going on with the food. It was a little overwhelming either my moms vegetarian meal but overall was fantastic. The quantity of the food was ridiculous, I have not seen buttitod this big in so long. The authenticity was there. As breakfast I ordered a random blueberry pancake too just to say that I tried a little of everything and MAN!! That pancake was fluffy, sweet and delicious. Side Notes: Great for large parties, tons of space, even has a bar. You should for sure check it out. A little birdie has told us this place gets packed on the weekends...all day. I don't know what went wrong last night. This is one of our fav places and we can walk here. The patio was full when we arrived, so we sat at the bar to order a drink while we waited. A table on the patio was soon free, and we were seated. It took awhile to get attention. We ordered the amazing plantains to start, and my husband got another marg. He said it was not what he ordered and there was no salt on the rim. He apologetically asked for a new drink. We waited. The new drink arrived. We ordered our entrees. My fav thing on the menu is the Vegetable Caliente, which comes with a salad (the house dressing is also amazing). He wanted a bowl of the Jalapeno soup before his entree. We waited. We were so hungry. Finally our entrees arrived. No soup, no salad, and no plantains. We let her know. Next we got the plantains, and the salad. He did have to mention prior to the bill that he didn't get the soup. The soup was not added to the bill, and neither were the plantains. The food is too good here to not return. Starliner Diner's new location is great. The new venue is much larger and is located in adorable downtown Hilliard, Ohio. It is still decorated with lots of tchotchkes from wall to wall so you will be delighted with many things to look at. The parking lot was a little crowded but we were still able to find a spot. Starliner is a great place to visit for any meal of the day. Their brunch is delicious and the lunch and dinner offer healthy portions. The last time I was there, I had the cuban sandwich. I'm not a huge plantain lover so I went with their fries instead and it is a great combination. My other companions loved their food as well. The drink menu is a little lacking. I had the house margarita and it was just okay. Being a cuban-themed restaurant, one might expect a mojito or something to that effect on the menu but they just don't have a lot of options. Service is great. The servers are all very friendly and happy to answer questions about the menu. They make you feel right at home. I don't come to Hilliard often but Starliner Diner is a must when in the area. It is definitely the top spot in the area. read more

I am such a fan of Starliner but due to covid haven't visited in a while. I had a friend in from out of town this weekend and we decided to go for brunch Sunday morning. What a mistake! When we arrived there was a 20-35 minute wait for a table, which is to be expected. We put our name on the list and took a stroll through Hilliard. When we returned there were still a few names on the list above ours so we sat on the patio and enjoyed the fall sunshine with others. Our wait turned out to be an hour. If the hostess would have been honest with us we likely would have gone somewhere else, but the wait was not the end of the world. People linger at their tables, we get it. Once we were seated we ordered quickly. Nothing complicated, an omelet & huevos rancheros. Then we sat, and sat, and sat, and sat! We watched others come in, order, and get their food before us. We asked the server and was told she'd check on it, still nothing. All in all it took us more than two hours to be seated and get served. Not for the whole experience, just to be seated and served. We're convinced our order got lost somewhere in the process. The waitress didn't check in with us at all during our wait. Very frustrating. We understand staffing shortages and if it looked like others were also not being served quickly we would have understood. But when others were seated after us, larger groups, and being served before us it was frustrating. By the time we were served we literally asked for our checks immediately, ate in 5 minutes and ran out the door as we had somewhere we needed to be by 1pm. Not sure I'll be quick to return. I LOVE this place! This is one of our favorite places for brunch and a place we like to take visitors to when they're in town. This was the first restaurant I've been to that served food with a Cuban influence. I love ordering off the specials menu since these dishes tend to be the unique ones. I've actually never ordered off the regular menu because the specials are always so enticing. My favorite dish is the Machaca, which has brisket and other Latin American flavors, which upon first thought may seem too heavy for a first meal of the day...but trust me, you will no longer think that once you take the first bite! The interior design is very eclectic, which makes this restaurant feel like a unique mom and pop place. One of the first things you notice are the various clocks on the wall. It's apparent that the owners like sunburst clocks, as these are the most prevalent (as a mid century modern homeowner myself, I can't blame them!). The prices are very reasonable and the service is consistently great. That, in combination with delicious food, have kept us coming back over the years. I like the new location too since it's bigger and has a paved parking lot on site. They even have a patio at the new location, which is nice to sit on during the summer months. They welcome any dogs to the patio too so you won't have to leave your furry friend at home or roasting in the car! read more

Starliner didn't really live up to my expectations. I was hoping to get a Cuban inspired breakfast with lots of flavor and spice, but I ended up eating pretty basic breakfast food without any unique flavor. Our waitress was straight up rude from the minute we arrived. It was a busy Sunday morning, so I get it. I'm not one to give a lower tip/complain when I get bad service - I've worked in food service and I really get it. However, it's not a great feeling when a waitress is rude/in a bad mood. The food was fine. I ordered a pork hash special with a side of jalapeño corn bread. The pork hash was a good size for the price, and the potatoes were seasoned very well. The pork wasn't anything spectacular but it tasted fine. I just feel like the dish should have included more spice and flavor for a place that specializes in Cuban dishes. My jalapeño cornbread was awful. I got a corner piece with dark edges that were a few minutes away from being burnt. It was so incredibly dry that I couldn't finish it (never got a water refill from our waitress) so I wasted $2.75. Everyone said the food was ok, not great. I might try it again if someone suggested coming here, but I'm not rushing back after the experience we had. read more

I got the Cuban French toast. Definitely get a small unless you are sharing. The portions were more than enough. The French toast was like eating churros at the fair, so sweet and crunchy! I normally love this place, especially their Huevos rancheros - the best in the city. My husband and I came for a late lunch. His jalapeño soup was so so - pretty bland. My huevo rancheros were really good as always but this time we had to deal with pesky fruit flies trying to get our food the entire time. Nice breakfast spot serving simple dishes that gets very busy on the weekend! The restaurant is Cuban themed, though at breakfast the meals are more like basic traditional American fare. They do have the option of Cuban toast with your food, and breakfast burritos, but otherwise you can expect basic omelettes and pancakes. I really like how they offer coloring and activity books for kids and have crayons on the table. I am used to seeing mini coloring sheets or placemats for kids, but it was nice that they have full-on books here where kids can do connect the dots, search and find, simple math, etc. Very friendly staff and fun clocks of all sizes covering the wall. read more

Finally had a chance to swing into the (not so) new location for lunch... I was happy to see the fun stuff that made the old place unique made the transition to the current spot! So, here's what I like about this strong independent restaurant.... cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, hand written specials (being a little sentimental here - felt like I was back in Key West enjoying my first Cuban), and last but not least, just downright good food. The menu is basically southern states, I.e., beans, rice and corn find their way onto a majority of the plates. As far as my favorite goes, I definitely would suggest the Cuban & Plantains!! This was our third visit here and it was quite different than the last two. Dinner for 3 - I ordered the big chicken burrito. Way too salty. The black beans were ok but the rice was too salty also. Both the burrito and rice were borderline inedible. My wife ordered the Angel hair pasta with shrimp and it was over seasoned with balsamic vinegar. Along with the pasta sauce it was not a good combo. This dinner was the Cuban fried chicken which was good but the rice and beans were over salted. As we were waiting for my turn in the "chair" a few doors down at Bakers Barbershop we searched for lunch. Lets just throw out there she loves Caribbean food after a trip to the Virgin Islands. We ended up being sold on the fact of the style of food. Now she was happy with her breakfast style order, me on the other hand, I wasn't that impressed. I ordered the Macaroni Creole. On Saturday's, this place gets reasonably busy. So be prepared. The service for the day, even though being packed, was great. Although, the choice of food I made was at best mediocre which suffices the 'A-ok' review. I will on the other hand give them another chance. I only rated them an 'A-ok' due to the fact the creole to me was bland and at best so-so. I hope upon my next visit I can update this review to a much better flavoring experience. read more
