This place is how Jerusalem garden used to be, personable, friendly and honest good food. We stopped for a mid afternoon snack, and ordered roasted cauliflower, lentil soup and a walnut maamou. I was genuinely surprised that the food is not salty like every other place in town. Your taste buds are left alone to appreciate the flavors of the spices. Stopped in and had a lamb gyros. It is made with wonderful pita bread that is delivered daily from an honest to goodness bakery. The meat is tender and flavorful. The sauce is a perfect accompaniment. The service and warmth of the staff memorable. It may seem like simple street food, but trust me, there are many who ruin this experience. Poorly run family business often understaffed and overly busy need to hire more help! they always say 15-20 minutes for carry out and it ends up being half and hour and it's still not ready when you get it. Owners regularly violate servsafe by contaminating cashier duties with food prep duties. There are tons of way better middle eastern restaurants that are open past 7 and don't serve overpriced coffees and smoothies and actually are efficient with basic pita orders etc. Waited today for 45 mins for a pick up order they are understaffed not coming back again ever promised 10-15 minute wait for a simple sandwich and soup. Severely understaffed and poorly run family business hire some staff and help! Don't keep it all under the books and table!! read more

The sign at Star's Cafe claims it's a "Middle Eastern Oasis" and it's not lying. My sister and I went for lunch and were not disappointed. We ordered the Star's Sampler #2 and were impressed with the variety the appetizer offered (hummus, tabbouli, grape leaves, falafel, baba ghannouji and pita). Then we split the Shish Tawook (charbroiled chicken breast with garlic sauce) with crushed lentil soup and rice. The portion size of the soup was impressive, definitely enough to fill up on, and it had good depth of flavor. The chicken tasted fresh off the grill and was incredibly juicy. Even better (somehow) was the garlic sauce. It went perfectly with the meal and didn't overpower it, unlike other places where it's intensely flavored. Regardless of the fact that we ate like fiends, there was still enough left over to warrant two take-home boxes. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for fabulous Middle Eastern cuisine. read more

I really, sort of, like this place. I think they cut some corners on re-using the oil to fry the falafel. I could taste the old oil. I also think the tabouli could use more tomatoes, onions, and bulgur. Please improve these things! Otherwise, fast and tasty is the by-line read more

I hate giving 2-star reviews. If I'm going to go by the Yelp descriptions though, Star's Cafe definitely warrants a "Meh" because I HAVE experienced much better. These guys aren't even trying. Underdone rice and greasy flabby fries. The odd thing is, the rice had sumac and a really good flavor, and the fries had really good seasoning on them. They just needed to be executed correctly. The service was polite and prompt if just a bit lackluster. I would have preferred the guy handing me my to-go bag didn't still have wet hands from doing side work. The decor is dive, but not charming dive. They do have free wifi which is nice. The chicken shwarma was really good though, but the pita seemed a bit stale. I'm going to go back to get another shwarma and a lentil soup, but a second chance is all I'll give them. read more

I love this place!! It's a tradition in my family, on saturday my dad will bring it back for all of us. I would go for the chicken deluxe anytime. Extra sauce is great on it also.. It's cheap, fast and healthy and I really really enjoy it. They have great Gyro's and plenty of vegetarian options. The lentil soup is a must, and they have AWESOME hummus. If you're in a hurry, they usually already have some ready. They also offer the hummus with meat and pine nuts- it's delicious! Great service, and they use fresh, natural ingredients. Best, and really only, location for quick and delicious middle eastern food for us west of I-94 Ann Arborites! I recommend the Shwarma, Spicy Chicken, or Falafal sandwiches. All great and under $5. The chicken fattoosh salad is good too, a bit pricier though. All in all can't go wrong! read more

Not as good as Jerusalem Garden downtown or Pita Pita/Haifa Falafel in Ypsi but it's a decent option if you're in west Ann Arbor and need your shwarma fix. I wouldn't recommend the salads, their fattoush dressing is bland as all hell. Wait service is tentative at best, they'll deliver your food but if you want water refilled, etc. you need to go to the counter. Also, expect to get your own silverware and bus your table when finished. It's definitely best to get takeout. read more

Star's is a hidden gem for vegetarians! (I suspect that their meat dishes are good, too!) My favorites here are the mjaddara plate (with fatoush) and also the falafel deluxe sandwich, which you can get by itself, or in a combo plate with hummus and tabbouli. Everything tastes fresh and homemade. If they have lemonade, get some, it's homemade and wonderful. The dining room is small, simple, and pleasant, but nothing fancy. Hard working family run business with good food and good prices- I can get behind that!! Fantastic middle eastern food. Lemon chicken soup is on point as well as the grilled meat sandwiches. Location is super convenient. Theres ample parking and you dont have to fight downtown traffic. Plus you can sneak over to TJ Maxx for a little shopping... dont worry I wont tell ;) Stars doesnt have terribly long hours (close at 7pm) but please understand it's family run and people do get tired by the end of the day. Have been wanting to try this place for a long time and finally had the opportunity this weekend. I popped in to grab something quick to-go while my family was next door at Jersey Mike's - I'm vegan so I knew Star Cafe would have something for me and the Falafel Deluxe wrap did not disappoint! It was ready in less than 3 minutes, was super fresh, and packed with plant-based goodness. Really great pricepoint too at $6, and staff were very friendly. We returned to Star's Cafe in Ann Arbor for our second delicious meal. The first time I had the lamb kafta sandwich while B had the spicy chicken sandwich. Today I tried the fattoush salad and a small plate of hummus both were perfection. B had the beef shwarma and enjoyed every bite. I was checking out the beverages when a woman asked me if it was our first time at Star's and I told her we had been there once before. She told me it is their go to restaurant. As they were leaving I asked for a Chinese Restaurant recommendation but they do not eat Chinese food. The two women sitting at the next table told us they like a new place that shares a driveway with Noodles & Company. Tomorrow!!? So Star's Cafe we have had two excellent experiences at your clean, friendly restaurant. We'll return often as we try more of your lovely food. read more

Star's Cafe was hopping for lunch when I visited recently. You can tell they get some regulars who visit while on break from work. It's a cute cafe, long and narrow, with tables for four up front, small tables for two next to the counter, and then more tables for four in the back. The food I had was just OK. I had a nice cup of iced tea that was strong and obviously not from a powdered mix. I also tried their mujadara pita wrap sandwich. It seemed a bit pricey until they brought it out to me and I saw how huge it was. The pita was crispy and warmed from the oven baking, and the dill pickles and lettuce and tomato inside the sandwich were crisp and juicy. However, there was too much of everything BUT the mujaadara. When I get mujadara sandwiches at other local restaurants, they're full of lentils and rice, and they may incidentally have some other veggies wrapped into it. But veggies, plus hummus and tabbouli dominated the sandwich from Star's Cafe, with just a sprinkle of the mujadara. And the lentils and rice I could taste were a little on the bland side. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I like other local Middle Eastern restaurants better, but if I was hungry and was on the west side of Ann Arbor, I might check this place out again. Next time I'll try the falafel or the fried cauliflower and see if they're more to my liking than the mujadara was. read more

The reason I had to give a one star is because even though I have enjoyed some of their food on the menu, there seems to be no consistency in pricing. If you happen to be a frequent visitor they charge u less, and prices seems to vary. definitely ask for a receipt if you ever buy anything here because menu prices are different from what they charge. The workers seem overworked and overwhelmed and the owner/manager is rude and obnoxious, specially to women. read more

One of my most favorite types of places are hole in the walls with good food. This place was on point. High Hopes, but Nope, Nope, Nope I had been to Star's when they first opened years ago, and at the time wasn't impressed. I thought, given these great recent reviews, maybe give it another chance. I want my calories back. Chicken Sharwarma Sandwich - Nice crisp on the pita, and the pickles were good. The chicken was dry and chewy, and not flavorful at all. Definitely 'meh'. Garlic Sauce - My God, where is the garlic? This was more like a weird fluffy mayo. If you're a middle-eastern restaurant and your food is mediocre, you had better at least have some great, potent garlic sauce. They didn't. This is a huge failing, imho. Rice - Nice color and a touch of sumac. Unfortunately undercooked and terribly bland. To be fair, rice isn't usually the star of the plate, but this was more like an unwanted side-kick. If you've had great middle-eastern food in Dearborn (or elsewhere), this place is going to severely disappoint. On the flip side, you may think the world of this place if you've never experienced good middle-eastern food. But trust me -- there is FAR better sharwarma, even within Ann Arbor's bound. read more
