We took the DART to Akard Station and walked a block downtown to find this hole in the wall. The actual footprint of the kitchen is about 25 feet and operates through two open windows. Outside has a few outdoor seats but has plenty of character with colorful shading and the patio overlooks the eyeball. Having bagels in grad school in Nashville and toasting Lenders Bagels from the grocery most of my life, I never understood what a great bagel should taste like. I tried Shug's bagel but the price point, long lines and crowed interior made me give up on bagels from Dallas until today. The person at the window recommended the Millennial Falcon, an open faced, Sesame Bagel with a Basil Schmear, pickled onions and chili flakes. It was wonderful and the chili flakes gave it a nice extra flavor. My girlfriend chose the Supernova Lox, which was also good but lacked the heat which I love. Doesn't matter. These guys know what they are doing and now I understand the fuss about real bagels. The experience also gives me another data point that supports my theory about great restaurants operating only out of a window. Any restaurant in business for more than a year that only operates out of a window , must have awesomely delicious food. They must because they are only competing on taste and potentially price, while bad weather acts as a natural deterrent. Any Dallas restaurant serving bagels, should take lessons from these guys. Um, am I missing something? Maybe it's just me, but I'm not understanding all of the hype around this place. On the plus side, they get major props for having my beloved poppy seed bagels which are hard to come by in our area for some reason. Texture-wise, the bagels are decent. I personally prefer a bit more "chew" but overall, they are pretty good. Now for what did not work for me- the much lauded veggie schmear was heavy on the carrot and dill. Like, unpleasantly heavy. A Pretty Good Bagel Shop, But Not Quite Worth the Hype... After hearing so many people rave about Starship Bagel, namely my husband, we decided to finally give it a try -- and we really went out of our way to do it. We drove about 40 minutes to get there, and once we arrived, we had to park pretty far away because there was basically no parking anywhere close. By the time we made the long walk and finally got in line, we were definitely hoping the experience would match all the hype. The bagels were fresh with a nice chew, and the flavors were decent. Everything we tried was perfectly fine, just not the standout, "you have to go here" level we kept hearing about. We didn't get any of their sandwiches, just bagels and smear. Garlic, salt and everything. None were anything to write home about. What really threw the experience off, though, was when another customer grabbed my order off the counter thinking it was theirs, thumbed through my food, and then just set it back down. When I pointed it out, the worker didn't seem to care at all -- no apology, no remake, nothing. It definitely took away from the overall visit. So I have not been to the actual location for starship bagels, but I have had starship bagels at Ascension coffee. Apparently starship partners with local cafés and coffee shops, and the cafes and coffee shops are able to sell these great bagels. So while I have been here in the Dallas area, I have tried several different brands of local bagels and so far starship is the best. I can't believe I'm craving them. They have that great chew that tastes fantastic all by itself. You don't even need to put anything on these bagels, so this alone has made me want to go and hunt down the closest starship bagel place and go in and experience it. I'll be dreaming about these bagels until my next time in Dallas. I was strolling around the area and came across Starship Bagel, located by the big eyeball in Dallas, you can't miss it. I kept noticing how it got so much traction from people on their breaks/also strolling the area, and I decided to give their egg bagels a try. And let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by how delicious my toasted bagel was. I order the egg bagel with scallions cream cheese and it was perfect. I was delighted by every bite, so much so, that my coworker and I ran back before they closed so she could order the same thing. We came here on a weekend morning and there was a steady line of customers. They do the orders in the order they are made, and so even if you have a simple bagel, your order might take longer behind someone ordering 10 sandwiches, which is what happened to me. I ordered the everything bagel with chive cream cheese and it had so much flavor. The bagel had so many spices on it and it was the perfect everything bagel. It was soft on the inside and somewhat crunchy on the outside. I asked how the olive cream cheese was and she let me Sample it, which was pretty good overall as well - tasted like olives mixed in with cream cheese. My partner from New York said it was pretty good for a bagel in Texas. Overall this place is solid and there are about 4-5 small tables in front of the stand (there is no indoor seating). I've been to New York and I've had their bagels and it's one of the perks about living in New York to have great bagels, even from a gas stations. The best bagel I ever ate in my life, came from a little hole in the wall in front of the legendary pizzeria Di Fara's in Brooklin. It was called Bagel Hole. And it was a Jewish orthodox establishment. Small plain bagel. Kind of sad looking. Plain cream cheese Religious experience. You never know when something's gonna surprise you. About Starship Bagels. They won a blind test at Bagel Fest against New York bagels. That's a great accomplishment. These guys have different locations. I don't know if that affects anything. The bagels look great. The toppings on top of the Everything bagel were the best I've ever had. And their signature bagel, the millennial falcon is an awesome creation. Their fermented jalapeño cream cheese is probably the go to. But with bagels, and this is important, different schmears go best with different bagels. And it's a personal trial and error thing. Although there are established classics. Starship bagels has all the ingredients to be great. I liked their lox bagel better than the one in New York. That's high praise. And the millennial falcon is a beauty. But I don't know if it is because we got them toasted. I'll try them untoasted next time.
