A delicious surprise. We drove up from Los Angeles to see Eddie Izzard at the Grenada. We were pressed for time as well- show started at 8pm. Think we rolled into state & fig at 7:15. This was my first time in Santa Barbara. I love it. The people, the wine, the food. Unreal. I came here for lunch and had a great meal and service. I really wanted the burger but had something lighter. I vowed to come back for dinner. Since the next time they were open for dinner was later in the week I came back on Wed. Really looking forward to it. Unfortunately I had the bad luck to be served by Doug D. He was inattentive and rude. The burger at the dinner hour was not good. May have been an off night. I told Doug and he immediately became defensive and asked if I complained at the time of service . I indicated I could not because he never came back to our table to check on us. If that was not bad enough he chose to insult me and my guest. We ordered a bottle of wine but did not finish it. When we asked to take the remainder with us. he chose to bring the corked bottle back in a paper bag and stated" here and you won't look like too much of a drunk". I was sober and can tell you I have never been talked to or treated like this in my life. I truly don't believe the management would tolerate this if they knew about it. Thankfully there was another man there that was helpful since we never received service from Doug. Our go-to place for dinner or brunch in Santa Barbara. The burger with fig jam, blue cheese, arugula and bacon is outstanding. The fish dishes are always delicious. Be sure to ask for the garbanzo bean (chick pea) appetizer. It's not always on the menu but they will make it. Crispy, crunchy, garlicky, lemony deliciousness. I could eat an entire basket. Recently enjoyed a brunch special of avocado, tomatoes, bacon and a poached egg on grilled ciabatta with chimichurri sauce. Great combination of tastes. Came here for a birthday dinner on Saturday night. Everything was so delicious--I ordered the fig burger and munched on calamari and the bacon Mac and cheese. My friends also enjoyed their meals, including the steak frites, pork chop and toasts. All the flavors mixed well and you could taste the high quality of the ingredients. I honestly don't know why this place has such good reviews. I feel that this is a huge huge yelp fail. I am only giving two stars because the place itself is adorable and makes you feel like you're eating on the streets of Europe. Now, here are my complaints. The sandwiches my dad and I ordered were both disgustingly oozing with aioli (which was not even really aioli - more what I would call straight mayonnaise). My dad forced it down, but as I cannot stand mayonnaise, I wanted to order something else. Frustratingly enough, the waitress never came back to ask us how the food was. After a full 15 minutes of my dad waving his hands in the air to catch her attention, she finally came over and I ordered the Mediterranean salad with chicken. Guess what? The salad came with the chicken very obviously undercooked. How the chef missed this huge detail? I couldn't tell you. By this time, I had had enough with the restaurant and ate only the lettuce. When the waitress came back, my dad told her that the chicken was undercooked, only so that the chef could be aware of his very dangerous mistake. The waitress came back with the check with the price of the sandwich and the chicken I added to the salad removed, which we appreciated. Never never ever going back again. Next time I'll enjoy the street with just a walk by. read more

My mom and I had such a wonderful experience here last weekend after seeing the Shen Yun show at the Granada. Though it was a little difficult to find, it was worth it! The setting is beautiful, with walls covered in ivy and stone walkways, it felt like we were in Europe! The inside architecture of the restaurant was lovely too. Our waiter was very friendly and took care of us more than I have experienced at any other restaurant. The food was to die for (especially the fig burger!). The pricing was surprisingly very do-able, though it was a high-end experience. I will definitely be coming here again the next time I am in Santa Barbara!! Thanks for a great experience! read more

Wow....based on all the 4 & 5 start reviews, thought we'd give a try. It was the first time eating there and the restaurant was not too busy buy the time we got there. I ordered a glass of merlot and I could tell just by the smell that it wasn't good and the sip I took just confirmed it. Tasted like it was the chef's old cooking wine. Horrid. I told the server and she was kind enough to open another bottle. The new bottle was much better - but just not a good wine in general. Asked for a glass of water - which was not filtered and tasted worse than my tap water at home. I didn't order food but my sister had the short ribs which were very nicely presented. As she took a bite the look on her face told me this was not going to be one of her better meals. I took a taste of the short ribs which were nice and tender but most of it tasted like they were cooked with old rancid oil..the veggies as well. She had a few more bites and that was it. Our server was very nice and accommodating as my sister and her husband have certain foods they can't eat. I truly want our local establishments to do well, but quite honestly I don't know that I would take the chance of going back. I know my sister and her husband certainly won't. Hoping the manager will see this and look into these issues. read more

They open a little bit later than some of the surrounding restaurants, but I never mind waiting a bit because they are located pretty close to the beautiful Santa Barbara courthouse. My husband and I have spent 5 months in Santa Barbara over the past two winters. State and Fig is by far our FAVORITE restaurant. Jane is a close second. We have become connoisseurs of clam chowder in SB. State and Fig has the best clam chowder-- way better than Brophy's! It's rich and creamy and chock full of tender clams. Every dish we have had there has been delicious and carefully prepared. The staff is always attentive. Sunday brunch is exceptionally good. Try the short ribs eggs Benedict with pesto hollandaise. You won't find this melt-in-your mouth beef and egg dish elsewhere. read more

Nothing too impressive here. The food is your typical American fare. I had "the beast" sandwich and garlic fries. Fries were cut a bit too thin (not in the good way) and fried too much - kind of hard to bite into. My sandwich came with 1/4 of a pickle. I asked for more and the server gave an unpleasant look and came back 6 minutes later with 3/4 of a pickle. She didn't tell me that it was extra and we were charged $1.00 for it. The food wasn't horrible but nothing to write home about - $10.00 for a cold sandwich seems a bit pricey. read more

The fried Brussel sprout leaves were delicious, the Med Salad was quite fresh & tasty the calamari seemed to be mostly batter, the polenta was really tasty and the wines quite reasonably priced. Very nice atmosphere. Most of our party had burgers, which were good but a bit messy. They were able to swap out the beef patty for chicken breast on one of them which was great. They are mostly beer and wine so no cocktails, which was a bit of a let down. Overall it was a good though and we would probably come back. read more

The service was horrible. It took over an hour to get our food. The place was not busy at all and there were several tables waiting for their food. What was so frustrating was that there was no communication. It would have helped if our waitress came outside and apologized for the wait. Instead, my husband had to go inside the restaurant to see what the problem was. One of the other tables that was out on the patio with us cancelled their order and left. This is the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. When we arrived we had to wait for our entire party to arrive, which I completely understand. But when everyone was there no one helped us sit down and just told us we could sit at the table. Once sitting, no one helped us or came over to give us menus for 15 minutes so we had to grab our own. It took about 20 minutes before a waiter finally came over to get our drink orders. I ordered a cappuccino and everyone got their mimosas and coffee after 20 minutes. When I asked the waitress where my cappuccino was she gave me a rude and short remark. It took a total of 40 minutes to get a cappuccino!! I would maybe understand if they busy but they weren't, I could see the waitstaff standing around. Overall the service took way too long, and we ended up being there for 2.5 hours waiting for everything from drinks to food to the checks. The only reason I did not give 1 star is because the food was pretty good and the presentation was pretty. But the food does not make up for the worst service I have ever received, I will definitely not be returning. read more

After reading the reviews, I was definitely looking forward to going here while in Santa Barbara, but unfortunately it was a very mediocre experience. First, we came in around lunch time, and they really did not know how to handle people who wanted to sit outside and were willing to wait. We ended up just waiting patiently until the other prospective customers begrudgingly walked away out of frustration for the lack of a process. When we were finally seated outside, the service was very slow. It took a very long time to get out order in, much less drinks. I am not giving them too bad of a rating because the food was fine. Nothing to write home about, but it was good. I had the fish tacos that were locally sourced. The ambiance was nice and the location is prime in the city center courtyard walking area. So, all in all, not a phenomenal experience by any stretch of the imagination, and probably would not recommend coming here unless their service improves. read more

Wow, what an amazing meal I had the other night... A group of us went there for a birthday on a Wednesday night and sat upstairs, and they stayed open for us past closing (since our reservations were at 8:30 and they close at 9:30 most nights). Now let's get into the food: I was told to try the toast trio and so glad I did - three different types of "toast" to suit your tastebuds; sweet, savory, or decadent. Thick pieces of bread toasted with different assortments on top (squash, fig, burrata). Warm ricotta and mozzarella cheese is all I have to say. The antipasti roasted chickpeas were a nice little snack to go along with the toast because I walked in starving. I ordered the steak frites medium, cooked to perfection, but subbed for the soft cheesy polenta instead of the Mac and cheese with bacon (luckily I got to sample the Mac&Chs and could have gone either way, both heavenly), served with broccolini. Also sampled the Gnocchi which was out of this world! Unlike any gnocchi I have tried before, not super saucy but BIG on flavor and texture was divine. We used State & Fig for our rehearsal dinner in October. Marisa, the owner/manager, was extremely helpful when we were in a bind because our original location fell through a couple weeks before. We're so lucky S&F was even available for a party of our size because it's an amazing restaurant with delicious food located in a gorgeous courtyard near all of SB's action on State Street. They accommodated our group of 50 people and supplied us with a stellar menu. Beyond the amazing food, they provided great service and helped make the evening as perfect as we hoped. We're definitely looking forward to returning as regular diners next time to venture to the area from LA. read more

The food and ambiance was great, but the service could have been a lot better. I got the breakfast burrito since you could never go wrong with that, but I do wish they had hot sauce floating around somewhere. We got there on a busy Sunday afternoon, and it took 20ish minutes to get a table, and it didn't seem like they had a very efficient system for it ( we just kept making eye contact with the waiters until they came up to us). It's located on a really cute alley way on state street, and they definitely weren't too happy about a younger crowd coming in. My friend asked about just getting the bottomless mimosas ($17) without food and we got a very rude "this is not a bar scene" instead of them just saying no. Some of us did end up getting the bottomless mimosas, and the champagne definitely did its duty. Overall, the visit was okay, but I am going to be looking for other brunch places in the area as well. read more

Went back for 4th time, two couples. Sunday lunch 1:30 today. Place was full. Initial service was attentive, drinks arrived promptly, orders taken in a good amount of time. Then we waited for a bit for our dishes. It got to the point where I saw two tables receive their food, who had been seated after we had been. However the food was highly enjoyable as always. Three of the 4 of us cleaned our plates and the 4th had a few fries left. Pesto hollandaise on eggs benedict was a taste sensation I've never enjoyed before. Chips are made fresh, paper thin and dreamy. So if you have nowhere to be in a rush and want to simply enjoy each other's company over a nice meal, don't be worried if they look busy! read more
