Visited this establishment and took advantage of their happy hour, where appetizers and drinks are half off between 2:00 and 5:00. My total bill before gratuity and taxes was $40.50, which should of been $51.03 after the 20% automatic gratuity is added. To my surprise, the total bill was $59.48. I told the waitress this amount was incorrect and she explained that the 20% gratuity is added to the original amount of the half off deals, which would of been $81.00 if it wasn't happy hour. I asked to speak with the manager and he came over and said, that's how the computer calculates it. I still don't understand how this is legal. Not to mention, the bottom of the menu clearly states that the 20% gratuity will be automatically added to a party of 6 or more. I don't like the fact that they would add the gratuity on the original price, when I paid for the happy hour price. I would advise everyone to check your bill when you go to this restaurant because they are committing fraud. read more

I overexplained how adult entrees were ordered and will be billed so whats the issue and asked if he was going to turn down money because of it being from the kids menu. His reply "YES". ( he also never addressed or introduced himself as a manager i had to ask our waiter who this random person was and why he came over to speak to me) Moral of the story. I wish this place was closer to me... On a whim a friend told me she was going and I was like hey why not. I made my way over there... a solid drive indeed. By the time I arrived, everyone was already finishing up their food, and they were sitting in a pleasant outdoor area. When I sat down, I observed the street that State Fare is along... it looks like it's poppin'! Maybe some day i will check it out. The day I was there, they had whiskey specials going on all night... and it was also karaoke! I had a bourbon drink that was much like an old fashioned... I forget the exact name, but it was delicious... absolutely delicious! Once karaoke got set up, we moved inside. I appreciated the manual tablet setup they had going for it. There was no paper to write on or app to download... just a tablet for all the things. The crowd was pretty light, and some songs I wanted to sing weren't there, but it was cool nonetheless! I would definitely go back to explore the food... my friends said it was awesome. And I can never turn down a brunch... it's just a drive, whew! I plan to return soon! read more

I think State Fare is trying hard to be everything to everyone. It's a top notch bar and a hit or miss restaurant. Menu is large which I think is part of the problem. If you think its going to be Portallis east you will be disappointed. What we loved about Portallis was it was a limited menu but was extremely well executed, not so much the case here. We've been twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. Had the "Bookmaker" salad for brunch and it was mediocre at best,( if you can't make it close to Sabatino's don't call it a Bookmaker) For dinner I had the Oysters Rockefeller that was made with frozen oysters, not good. The place could really use a raw bar with fresh seafood. The wife had the crab dip which was just okay. If you're going for a cocktail it's great food is a crap shoot. read more

Man, j wish this spot was around when I lived in Catonsville, I would have been here every week!!! This is located where the Friendly's used to be for those in the know. Now this spot is open concept and super trendy with tons of outdoor seating and even a tent for bands to play under! This is a great location for brunch, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night fun!!! I highly recommend sharing their appetizers - the edamame and spicy and delicious but their wings may need to be put back into the fryer for a little longer! Dined with a party of 15 and I thoroughly enjoyed. I forgot our writer's name but I had him before on a previous visit and he's very attentive and friendly. Knows the menu well. We were able to separate our payments by family seating which we all loved. We didn't really want to be seated indoors so we opted for a table in the tent area and they have floor heaters so it was perfect. Food - I ordered the rockfish bites and coleslaw which were just that. But the bites were delicious and had a little spicy kick. I'm not a big fan of coleslaw but it did taste too vinegary. Also pictured are the crab cake egg rolls and I was told they were good. I also had an order of Brussels sprouts which were roadted peffectly but i would havd preferred more seasoning. The one that took over after we were sat introduced himself by asking if we'd been here before, then said himself, "the service is terrible." He then made no effort to provide good service. Mid-conversation he put his hand in front of our faces to refill the cup I was still holding and drinking from, then gave attitude when we were confused about why his hand was in front of our faces. We weren't given utensils with our food. The music was EDM remixes of Michael Jackson songs, with the volume up way too loud. The people at the table next to us were waiting for their check from the time we sat down to almost when we left 30-40 mins later. That was the exact same experience we had the last time we were here, they took our card and all the servers huddled around the host stand talking for over 20 minutes before we got it back. I want to like State Fare but I've been three times now and the food isn't the best. The second time I went for Brunch on a Sunday and ordered the Shrimp and grits. They just weren't good. Very salty and the gravy on top reminded me of a Thanksgiving turkey gravy. The shrimp were cooked fine and the grits were okay but the gravy messed it up for me. Overall, the dish just didn't sit well with me. I didn't finish it. The third time I went I again went for brunch on a Saturday morning with a group. We all ordered various things. The breakfast burrito, honey chicken biscuit sandwich, the standard meat, eggs and toast/waffle. Unfortunately, none of us were really that satisfied. I ordered the honey chicken biscuit. The chicken strips were flavorless and the way they present it is face up with honey drizzled on top. It just wasn't good to where I picked it a part and half way ate it. I did participate in the mimosa deal. They were okay and came out in thin plastic cups. I just wasn't impressed as I knew I wouldn't be. At least the bacon was good. The servers are always nice and it's always packed and busy but I guess it's just not right for my tastebuds. I haven't really tasted their drinks so maybe I'll sit at the bar one day. I have tried to dine at State Fare on numerous occasions, but the wait is always long. Luckily, today I thought ahead and made my husband and I a reservation prior to just showing up. Great decision. I recall when this location was a Friendly's, it is not that big, but they have plenty of seating outside to accommodate diners during the warmer months. The decor is confusing, the wall are filled with pictures of rappers and rockstars, so I am not really sure what the theme is. Football was playing on the tv, so it was rather loud inside. But, the restaurant was clean and the wait staff was very friendly. It took us quite some time to get our food and we really didn't order meals that should have taken extended time to cook. The menu is typical bar food. Wings, burgers and salads. The key lime chili wings were ok, they cooked well, but lacked proper seasoning. WOW!!! I wish I could give bartender RYAN 6 (SIX!!!) stars for service. I stepped away for a brief moment and I came back to my seat with my water already poured. The stars of the show were the french fries with their pretty unique thick spiral cut, but also the sweet potato fries with an excellent and savory raspberry dipping sauce. The harvest salad looked beautiful, but the main ingredient (squash) was under grilled and somewhat hard. The flatbread pizzas were a miss - cut into 5 triangular slices, each slice totally flopped, the dough providing no structure. The sauce was quite generic and the cheese was thinly layered and seemed of low quality. (When some shreds of cheese have not melted, you know something is off.) $15 for all you can drink breakfast cocktails from 8am - 2pm is an easy way to get me out of the house, whether we're in a pandemic or not, LOL. Fortunately State Fare was enforcing mask wearing, social distancing for tables and bar patrons, and had sanitation stations throughout the restaurant in plain sight. The staff was cleaning the entire time we were there and I felt very safe dining inside when we visited. This is not a fancy brunch place and has more of a laid back / no frills style and setting. Even though I typically prefer my cocktails to be made to order, State Fare makes the mimosas, crushes, & bloody Mary's in large batches and pre-pours them into plastic cups to distribute to the brunch crowd. I wasn't thrilled about that aspect but had no complaints after having a couple grapefruit crushes. I also enjoyed the calamari appetizer albeit cooked a little more well done than I typically enjoy and the crab dip with pita chips was very good, too. I love a good eggs Benedict with crab and State Fare's "chesapeake" rendition did not disappoint. Once again, this location has more of a pub style fare than it does fine dining execution of dishes and I think they are doing well for what they're going for. Stan was serving / bartending and extended us awesome hospitality and service, even through working a double shift. His great customer service is what pushed this 4 star location to being 5 stars in my book. read more

Until about a year ago, we were going to State Fare once a week. We've cut back and now haven't gone in months. The food is still pretty good overall, they update menu items regularly and food quality is great. But some of the prices have gone out of control. A bacon cheeseburger (I think it's a 1/4 lb. or maybe 1/3 lb) is $18. Their crab dip, which is my favorite appetizer, now only comes with 10 pita chips and if you want more it's $2 a batch. They raised prices on the kids menu, but they still use the old menu. Unfortunately, you can get a just as good or better meals throughout Catonsville. Still a fun place to go, just not as a regular spot (at least for me) One of their managers (I think his name is Jason) is also extremely unfriendly and can be confrontational. I've even seen him use profanity at other customers (not us, luckily). read more

They take up a lot of parking area which is understandable with COVID going on. I sat inside to watch the draft and get a glimpse of the music artist paintings. I just happened to go during restaurant week. You get a 2 course meal for $18. Pretty good deal. I started with the crab and corn chowder. To me, chowder is supposed to be a little thicker than soup. This chowder was more on the soupy side and didn't have very much corn in it. The crab amount was ok. 2nd course I ordered was the street corn shrimp tacos. Pretty tasty even with the cilantro purée and I really don't like cilantro but it didn't ruin the taste. The tacos were packed with 2 nicely sized shrimp and corn salsa topped with hot Cheetos. Nice restaurant in a nice community. Food is typical American style cuisine with a Baltimore spin. Happy hour is always a hit as all appetizers and drinks are half priced. They have an extensive whiskey selection and even the highest end juice is 50% off. Happy hour does get crowded but the specials are available throughout the restaurant and not just at.tje bar which is amazing. The happy hour crowd makes the restaurant quite loud but things quiet up at when when happy hour is complete (2pm -5pm M-F). Staff is attentive and nice but can get busy when the crowd is large. The service is still good, the happy hour is reaaonable abeit it comes with a rougher crowd, but thats almost to ve expected. The food is terrible now though. I've had different items and each time they lack any flavor. The portions are still decently sized and presentation is fine too, but they are bland, flavorless and tasteless. My waitress was really busy but she was polite and checked in sometimes until the end because it was so busy. The ambiance was chill. A lot of artwork from different music artist. I was expecting it to be crowded but it wasn't too crowded. The brunch crowd was leaving and there wasn't a long wait. We only waited 5 mins for a table on the patio. Due to COVID, they put a tent up and blocked off some of their parking spaces to accommodate more customers. Our waitress, Keke, was very attentive and helpful with suggestions. Food came out quickly, and everything was sooo delicious. The drinks were delicious too. I love that they have cocktails named after musical artists and songs. They acted as if they were the customer! Very rude first impression. Drinks were overpriced and very little alcohol taste to them. Food was so so. Wait time was HORRIBLE! Dirty bathroom. This place used to be a Friendly's back in the day. I once got a banana split from there and they served it without the banana!!! But at least the staff was polite and friendly. I wanna start this with Nate was awesome. He was seriously amazing. Super respectful and remembered my husband said he wanted lots of ketchup. Small things like that matter. Thank you Nate. Been here several times. First time, amazing. And then it slowly declined every time we went so we stopped going. I decided that for my little brother's birthday morning breakfast I wanted to take them somewhere that we had loved in the past so we decided to give this another chance. Bad idea. Not so much the service, but what came after. We ordered our food and we all wanted coffee, but the coffee was really bad. It just tasted like burnt beans and left an awful aftertaste. All 3 of us that ordered it hated it. But we were polite. So at the end, when the waiter was coming back to give us a check, I told him that it was not his fault that we just didn't enjoy the coffee that it tasted really burnt. He apologized and I said it's totally not his fault that it was OK we just wanted to say that. I saw him talk to the manager (likely the day shift manager), and the manager boasts out really loudly behind us "everybody's entitled to their opinion!", and then just walks right past us after bursting that out loudly. Me and my sister in law look at each other confused and ask if that really just happened. I'm appalled honestly. I don't do confrontation but that was so rude. I felt like a "Karen" but I walked up the manager and told him that was unprofessional and I that I am a yelp elite and will be leaving a negative review. I know it is unrelated but it was a table of 4 veterans too. 2 active duty still, a Marine and Air Force gentleman that is just a few years shy of retirement and recently deployed, and 2 prior enlisted, another Marine, and I was a Navy Corpsman for the better half of a decade myself. So I just think you should be mindful and not judge books by their covers first of all and second, choose a better approach. And also we know what crappy coffee is. The parts that were unsaid because we were trying to be respectful. The fried green tomatoes were mushy and not crispy at all, the pancakes were sour and the coffee was burnt. And whatever was in my brother's burrito, his face was distorted trying to chew it and he pulled it out of his mouth, he just didn't say much about it. I am shaking right now though and sweating because of how much I hate being confrontational, but I like disrespectful people even less. The positives in the past were the Brussel sprouts and sides. Update: Extra Star for excellent curbside service!!!Received such expedient and professional service today thanks to "SHAE" who told me my curbside takeout order would be ready in 20 minutes and made sure that it actually was! It actually arrived to my car in about 15!!! Hot, well prepared, and well packed! The buffalo wings were good and the Brussel sprouts surprisingly tasty! The freshly canned grapefruit orange crush was so delish! Ask for cups of ice as I did. Shae was quite courteous and helpful. She even placed packets of hand sanitizer wipes in my bag. Talk about safety-minded and health-conscious protocols! Now that's what you expect during this period of high alert. So...today's experience changed my mind and thus I added a star to my review and I give many kudos to SHAE and to whichever manager hired her and scheduled her to work today! This was my first time trying this place out. I have driven past it so many times especially during the pandemic because of the tents covering the outdoor seating. The food was just ok~ I had the mussels which were pretty good. Of course, I had a sangria and it was delish. The parmesan wings were pretty good however fried kinda hard. The restaurant was extremely cold in the dining area. Our server was friendly and checked on us multiple times. The DJ was setting up prior to us leaving so the table & chairs were moved to make room for the dance floor. I love the wall art as it gives good character.
