Woodberry Kitchen is such a great spot. The restaurant is beautiful, the service was outstanding, and the food really tasted like farm-to-table cooking. Everything felt fresh and homemade, but in that "someone actually knows how to cook" kind of way. I got the burger and it was simple but really well made. The table favorite was the fish dip, which disappeared pretty quickly. There's a 20% service charge included, and it's not gratuity, but honestly the experience was good enough that I didn't mind it at all. The restaurant is pretty small, so definitely make a reservation. The outdoor patio also looks like an awesome spot on a nice fall day. The restaurant is beautiful and cozy, and I loved how much the menu leaned into seasonal, local ingredients. I ordered the pork schnitzel from the specials menu, and it was delicious, but the surprise favorite for me was the pastry, the blueberry muffin. It tasted so fresh and homemade in the BEST possible way. We also brought our well-behaved 2.5-year-old, and they were so sweet and welcoming with her. Super popular spot. It's also hidden in this building that's a venue for dinners. The normal restaurant is really small. There's a bar for 5 people and like 5 tables. Make sure to make a reservation. Weekend reservations are impossible. On a weekday, we were able to book same day. Top notch service. Accepts credit card. Their menu changes. We showed up for a reservation but had to wait. The staff was nice and gave us a complimentary charcuterie board. Tavern board (charcuterie board) - was really good. Nice spread of salami and cheese. It's a nice precursor to the main meal Roasted oysters- tasted fresh. There's extra condiments on top, I thought was excessive Oyster pie- pretty interesting. I have visited Woodberry Kitchen before as a wedding venue (GORGEOUS), but I never had an opportunity to sit and enjoy their menu until now. My brother and I visited the eatery and we ordered the Tavern Board, which was filled with various yummy little treats. The board was well designed, and the jams and spreads were well designed with the intention to complement different flavors. I ordered a coffee, and unfortunately, the coffee was subpar. I was really hoping such a nice eatery would provide espresso or other cafe. Nonetheless, the place is beautifully designed and well-suited for the brunch scene. This is such a cool brunch spot. WK is located in a repurposed mill and has a really chic vibe to it. The high ceilings with brick walls and floral curtains really give it a bohemian look and makes it feel unique. The space is small so I recommend making reservations. We got the cornbread waffle. Amazing if you're hankering for something sweet. The blueberry compote and cream tasted very fresh. The Skillet Mac n Cheese was also very good. Highly recommend. Outdoors is nice too, but feels a little less intentional. We went for vegan restaurant month and got their special 3 course menu, along with a couple other dishes from the regular menu and drinks. This was my first time to Woodbery Kitchen since the rebrand from Woodbery Tavern. I had only been once before for brunch and really enjoyed the meal during the pandemic. It's super cute and intimate, and the ceilings are high and it just feels really classy. The servers are lovely but the food really lacked. The martini and wine I got was also mediocre. The highlight of my meal was really the burger and I'd love any place that does a really good high end burger. I was also really excited about the Baked Alaska as I've never had the scissor before, but the rum wasn't burned off correctly and there was just too much raw liquor. We should have a lot of different things so I feel like I got a pretty good idea of their cuisine. We didn't have a reservation so we could sit at bar or 'outside' which was a room off the restaurant with plastic covers & heaters so you weren't reallly outside. The plum daiquiri was very tasty . We had the crab pot which was good but I've had better. The menu is limited as they serve what is available from local farms but they have an option or 2 for everyone. The rockfish was very good with crispy skin and the grits and veggie gumbo was different but very good. It was a little spicy for my taste but not overwhelming to the point where you couldn't eat it. I don't eat red meat but was told the steak with frites was good & the fries were super crispy. The crabcake was different as well as it had a super crispy top almost like a cracker & the potato pave that it came with was layers of potatoes fried together in a rectangle shape! The food was innovative and different in a good way. I would definitely recommend this restaurant but maybe make a reservation if you want to sit inside. We didn't order dessert but the waitress had overheard it was my birthday so she brought me out a treat which was nice. The renovated version of this restaurant is spectacular, but the space reserved for general dining is actually quite small, while there is an event space nearby. The food was as good as promised. Service was not, and after being seated it was a struggle to figure out who might be willing to take an order and we spent ten or fifteen minutes casually talking and trying to flag someone down, listening to other tables get a warm introduction in the meantime, before someone got to us. This is one of the places that adds a service charge and makes tipping optional, and I was not so inclined. Notably, getting a brunch reservation was easier than getting a dinner reservation, which surprised me because it's a great brunch. The Carolina rice and beans dish they offered was resplendent, with fragrant rice, fresh vegetables, and a strong chili crisp complementing the robustly flavored beans. I've spent a fair amount of time in the Lowcountry but I've never had the distinctive rice varieties from that region prepared so well, including my own efforts. The salad waited until the beans were gone, but it was a fantastic set of greens with shoots and flowers and a delightful buttermilk dressing. Our search for something sweet yielded a board of pastries which provided delicious variety. The place has a variety of items that I wouldn't eat, but as a vegetarian I didn't struggle for choice. We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday with a quiet dinner. I made reservations well in advance! Parking is a little tricky. It didn't help it was raining and dark already. It was a little hard to find the entrance of the place, too. Once we got in, it was very cozy and well decorated for Christmas. We were seated right away. The hostess was super nice and quick to bring us water. Our waitress was fine. We ordered drinks (I got the winter swizzle, and my husband got the old fashion). We ordered the fried cornmeal oysters and the scrapple musubi for an appetizer. Then the mushroom pie, the maryland style fried chicken with gravy and the pork & beans for entrees. The drinks did take a while to get. They showed up a little after our appetizers. I wouldn't get the scrapple musubi again. I think I'd much prefer rice than the room temp. grits in a musubi - but that might just be a preference thing. The oysters were fantastic. It was our favorite bite of the night. It came out super hot and fresh. Well seasoned. We wish we had more. The mushroom pie came out pipping hot. Loved the crust. The filling itself lacked flavor. It was just salt. Like another reviewer said, the Oyster pie is probably the way to go. The fried chicken was good, gravy was super salty. I liked the amount of gravy it came with, enough to smother the waffles and dip bites in it as we went along. The pork and beans was okay. The porkbelly was very very hard to cut into. Which we've rarely seen with a pork belly cut. The dish was on the verge of being too sweet. We had also added on a side of fries and that was the best part of the main courses. They're thick cut fries and they come out freshly fried. Wow were they good. I was hesitant on getting dessert because it took so long to get the dessert menu/to have the waitress come back to take our dessert order - but I really wanted to try the baked Alaska. It came out much quicker then anticipated. I love the show they put on with the tableside candle. The food runner was great! So great to be back and check out the reconfigured space at Woodberry. They now have an events space (Gatherings by WL) and a tavern restaurant. Same great food and drinks and great service. We started with the oysters which were plump and fresh, and had a nice touch of chili oil which we loved. We also got to try their charcuterie board which was a nice mix. For our mains we had the rainbow trout that was fresh and dressed with nuts. The pie I had was also tasty but I did think it makes for a great lunch instead of dinner...this is more of a personal preference tho. It has been some time since we visited Woodberry Kitchen but we visited the other restaurant in DC in between. This time we found out that it has shrunken in sq ft and it is now called Tavern. We were early for the reservation and met the chef at the door it was so nice to meet the Chef Spike Gjerde, he is such a cool dude and in my opinion he is the top chef in MD. We had a short conversation with him and left for a walk when we returned, he gave us a bottle of my fav snake oil sauce. *heart* My Loire sauvignon blanc was perfect! We tried several appetizers: the chorizo baked clams so balanced in flavors and clams were fresh! The pork belly on polenta was amazing with that touch of relish that went so well with the fattiness of the belly. The beet salad was so delicious I could just eat that everyday! The beets so fresh and well prepared with some of the vegetables and the sesame tuille really had a great impact on the overall of the dish. We were surprised by the pork pate we wanted to order at first but it was alot of food, it was one of the best pate I had in US. The spicy mustard and sweet jam provided the perfect harmony to the pate truly remarkable dish. Our kid had the fish and chips the batter reminded me of the goreng pisang (fried banana) so delicately light yet crispy. Most batters I had are heavy and oily. The tartare sauce was freshly made it's amazing. We had the picanha steak and the rockfish they were fresh and good but felt like the earlier courses outshone them or we were just too stuffed. Still with food so good, we couldnt pass up the dessert, we decided to get the butterscotch pudding. It came in a little cocktail glass. It had a wonderful butterscotch and toffee flavor BUT not too sweet at all. That mastery isnt it? Grabbed a drink at the bar before our dinner reservation and were told by the attentive bartenders about their "Golden Hour" special. The Golden hour special gets you a complimentary charcuterie board with the purchase of any cocktail (including their zero proof beverages). Nice! The Tavern Board was delicious and featured deviled eggs, aged Gouda, salami, fruit, and trout rillettes. It was a perfect pre-dinner snack! Drinks were also really delicious! I got the blackberry basil lemonade and the cherry limeade as I am pregnant and not drinking and my friend got the garden party. Once seated we ordered the deviled eggs-because I needed more!!- and the crab pot for appetizer. The deviled eggs were the perfect texture and had the exact ratio of mustard to mayo that my heart desires. So good! The crab pot was equally delightful with large chunks of lump crab meat swimming in cheesy, creamy goodness. For dinner we ordered the crispy eggplant salad, the rockfish, the tavern burger. The obvious standout to me was the crispy eggplant salad! The Asian fusion flavors mixed with the various crunchy, crispy textures of the cabbage and eggplant really made my palate dance in excitement. It does have a bit of heat if you are sensitive to spicy foods but it's won't leave your mouth burning. Must try! The fish was okay but lacked flavor. I would have liked more seasoning, personally, and the table agreed. The tavern burger was juicy and had good flavors but didn't blow me away. For dessert we ordered the baked Alaska and the honey cake. This was my first time trying a baked Alaska so I was excited! To serve, rum was poured on top and then lit on fire. Unfortunately the fire did not burn enough of the rum off and left us with a mouthful of liquor. A bit of a disappointment because I couldn't really partake in this dessert because I'm preggo! But-The honey cake was amaaazing! Get it-you won't be disappointed! The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, open, and full of natural light. I couldn't get over the amount of detail put into the layout, pieces of furniture, and decor that really makes the ambiance of this place shine. What a great spot! I was passing through on a work trip and a coworker recommended this place, I sat at the bar and I can't remember the bartender's name but she was amazing. Everything you hope for in a great bartender, very insightful, local with lots of great recommendations for any topic, very knowledgeable about the menu, made a fantastic cinnamon old fashioned, and she was very knowledgeable on what ingredients were in each dish to aid my dietary restrictions! I ordered a fried mushroom salad which was soooo good, it had a little kick to it which was perfect. I also ordered the sweet potato appetizer which was also delicious. They had quite a few vegan options that looked really good and I had a tough time deciding which is rarely the case so I can wait to go back and try more! I am lactose intolerant but when I saw the apple tart for dessert I knew I had to try it anyway, even though the bartender did warn me of the dairy. And boy was it worth the sacrifice! I made reservations a few weeks in advance and we could only make a reservation for Thursday because thats how fast the tables go. Walk-ins a bit risky here since the restaurant is very small, maybe 15-20 tables max. The service was really great. Starting off with the appetizers we got sweet potatoes and leek soup, oysters, and crispy sweet potato salad. The soup was quite literally the most flavorful dish and best soup ive ever had; there were so many textures and flavors that well went together. Oysters and salad were ok. The burger has a homemade sweet potato bun (they use alot of sweet potatoes here lol) and it takes away from the fluffiness youd normally expect. Steak was absolutely incredible on the other hand. Because our group was a party with reserved space, it appears we had assigned staff to help us. Everyone was polite, prompt and helpful. What's not - Layout. It's a very industrial interior setting, which also means that sound echos. It's not easy to have a conversation with others because of how the sound carries. - Food layout. As previously mentioned, there were charcuterie boards and a variety of desserts. One of the drawbacks is their signage of the food. Specifically, everything was just on one sign, so it was impossible to determine what was what, especially given the layout of the food. It would have been helpful to have specific signs next to the specific foods. - Crab dip and fried chicken. I couldn't taste any crab in their crab dip, which was disappointing, especially because their crab cakes had a good amount of crab. Unfortunately, my experience didn't live up to the hype. First, it was surprisingly difficult to find the front entrance, and parking was a nightmare. After some confusion, a helpful person directed me to the door. Once inside I was seated in the clamped area that felt more like a crowded subway car than a comfortable dining space. The tables were packed too closely together, making an atmosphere uncomfortable. I was excited to try the reimagined Woodberry Kitchen! When it is not being used as an event space they do have dinner nightly from 5-10pm. The space is very intimate and cozy which I appreciated and liked. We had a reservation but decided to sit at the bar which I am Glad we did! Jessie was behind the bar and she is simply awesome! The whole staff was extremely attentive which was refreshing. Upon sitting down we reviewed the menu which has lots of great drink options both zero proof and alcoholic. Jessie made me the concrete rose with gin to start and teddy had the Negroni which smelled delicious. The CR was so so good! With our without the gin. I think ordered the oysters and the crab pot! Which was so good! The oysters were some of the best fried oysters I have had and the dip was so delicious as well. The crab pot was very fresh and the perfect balance of cheese and crab. The ambiance was very nice. We went on a Wednesday, and they have local artists playing from 6-9, which was really fun. The service was also good. We ordered 3 things from the menu, 2 smaller plates and one larger plate. The 2 smaller plates were very good. The steak tartare was a bit finer ground than I'm used to, more akin to a hamburger grind. However, it was seasoned very nicely and went well with the Dijon mayonnaise they provided. The pork belly was also good, it was tender and the fat complemented the meat nicely. However, the beans seemed slightly undercooked. While I did like the 2 smaller plates, I found the fish underwhelming. It was cooked perfectly, but I found it unevenly seasoned, with some bites having very little flavor. 3.5 stars. Before getting down to brass tacks I should note that I have been to Woodberry Kitchen several times but this review is the first time since they have re-opened as Woodberry Tavern. Ambiance- it was really nice, I enjoyed what they've done with the space since the remodel Drinks- I came with my parents and husband and everyone's drink was great! I got the "your cross to bear" and it was a contender for my favorite drink of the year so far. They also have an extensive and well-curated wine list. Service- a mixed bag. Our server was very nice, but the service itself was extremely slow. I know that there are staffing issues going on right now, so maybe that was what was going on? The hostess was noticeably taciturn, to the point of being borderline rude. Food- again, a mixed bag. The ingredients are obviously extremely high quality and very fresh. I particularly enjoyed the board, the smoked whitefish being a standout. This was our first time to Woodberry Kitchen after its reopening and we enjoyed a delicious, cozy dinner there on a weeknight. The restaurant dining space is much smaller than before, owing to a portion of the place now set up for events hosting. The ambiance was magical, with soft lighting and rustic details at each table. Service was prompt and friendly. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and helpful with selections. We began with an assortment of snacks, which were each delicious in their own ways. This set the stage nicely for their mushroom tortellini staple. The dish may have benefited from finishing salt but the mushrooms and pasta were otherwise flavorful and well prepared. The vegetarian curry was warm and inviting with its aromatic spices and seasonal ingredients. We came hungry and left satisfied and happy with our dinner. This intimate experience is perfect for a nice cozy date night and to celebrate special occasions! read more

Was a bit disappointed in my dinner tonight at Woodberry Kitchen (or Tavern if they renamed it recently I think). For $44, I expected to get more than one crab cake, but it was only one! It tasted good and had a good crispy exterior, but it was not jumbo lump by any means-in fact the crab pieces were small and stringy. Not much filler at least though. I liked the corn and tomato side. Just didn't seem worth $44! The crispy eggplant was good but I was disappointed that there was so little eggplant in a dish called "eggplant")! It was mostly cabbage with a few pieces of eggplant. Flavorful, but not really what I was expecting. I don't think the waitress described this accurately when i asked about it. The tortellini were good but a bit dry and could've used more sauce. Did appreciate that you can order different size portions for this dish. We also had ordered a side of squash, but the waitress (or kitchen) forgot about it and it never came. The waitress didn't apologize and instead asked if "we still wanted it because it would be awhile"-aka they forgot it and never even started making it. Not great customer service and she didn't even apologize or comp anything on the check to make up for it. (We declined waiting for it--and then after all that, it still showed up on our check at the end!) Also, they didn't course out our dishes at all-all 3 plates arrived at once which was kind of annoying too-the eggplant was a salad dish and should've come out first. Not sure why nobody was paying attention to this. Lastly, we ordered a dessert to split-the Baltimore peach cake-and this was disappointing. There was barely any peach in it, the breading/cinnamon roll-like exterior was dry and hard to cut through, and the vanilla ice cream was just a bit boring/uncreative. We were celebrating my bday, and while I appreciate them bringing out an extra cup of ice cream with a "happy birthday" sugar decoration, this was also sort of non-impressive (and we already got plain vanilla ice cream with the dessert we ordered, so it would've been nice if they'd brought a different flavor, or just comped the dessert we'd ordered instead...) I don't mean to sound ungrateful for the comped ice cream, but maybe a little more thought into the overall course would've been helpful here-we ended up barely touching it and then I felt bad! Service overall was a big miss. Our waitress was the hostess I think, so clearly they were understaffed and just didn't seem very attentive. Water was left unfilled several times. Asked for a lemon to go with the crab and it took over 5 minutes (could've just gone to the bar myself faster). We walked out and nobody said bye. Also, there is no phone number for the restaurant?! We were running early and trying to call to see if that would be a problem, and there was literally no way to call and get ahold of a human. Crazy! Also, There was a very steep 23% service fee already tacked onto the bill, and although i always tip and still would've in this situation, I def don't think the service tonight was anywhere near 23% tipping caliber. So don't love that. Not rushing back anytime soon. The one positive thing I'll call out is that we arrived a good 30 min before our reservation, and they did seat us early instead of making us wait. I thought I'd already experienced the best Bmore has to offer, and I was wrong. This was, without a doubt, one of the best brunches I've ever had. Everything from the quality, flavor, presentation, service, and ambiance was perfect. I was also happy to see they had multiple dutch baby options on their menu-I went with the sweet option and will return to try the savory one! Full disclosure--my wife and I are friends of Woodberry, but I can say we truly enjoyed our dinner at the newly christened Tavern at Woodberry Kitchen. If you didn't know, the restaurant has been refashioned into an events space and a smaller tavern that allows for dinner at an intimate scale. The menu continues to highlight seasonal and regional cuisine. Service, which was attentive but not overbearing, begins with a board that includes amazing cheese straws, cheese, fresh pickles, as well as cured meat and trout rillette. For our meal, we went with vegetarian options. We started with the green salad (generous) and the rarebit, which was--if you've never had it--like the most decadent open-faced grilled cheese of all time, with a fluffy blanket of melted cheddar/ale. The salad comes with two dressing options, one of which was a pomegranate vinaigrette and likely vegan. The menu had one vegetarian entree listed, red pepper squash & house-set tofu (probably vegan), but we were pleased to learn a mushroom pie was also available that night, so we got both. The tofu in the first dish was akin to a silken tofu and was set in the serving dish itself. On top of the tofu was a drizzle of oil and spice that reminded me of tofu dish I had in Beijing once, perhaps a flavor akin to mapo dofu, and the tofu paired nicely with the strongly seasoned squash. The mushroom pie was richly decadent in a scrummy pastry. A selection of sides is brought to the table with the entrees. Ours included pommes pallaison, creamed kale, and roasted carrots. The creamed kale is practically a reason for going in itself--that's how delicious it was. I forgot to mention drinks--they have a nice selection of house cocktails that are great, so don't skip them. I tasted my spouse's Shenandoah and it was addictive. There are also wines by the glass and beer on draught. The whole evening we were transfixed by the sight of an uncut Lady Baltimore cake behind us, but when we finally got to dessert, we were stuffed and only could eat a forkful each; the rest is in my refrigerator and I can't wait to have it. The Tavern would be a great place for date night or catching up with old friends. I unabashedly recommend it. read more
