It had been awhile since we dined outside on State Fare's gorgeous patio deck; pregnancy cravings just hit me and told me to go build my own burger again-reminiscing on my shrimp, swiss, bacon, and fried green tomato burger from last visit. This visit, I was a bit overwhelmed to see all the expanded options they've added to their byo menu! Oof, this was a pro and con for cravings haha. I opted for: A burger topped with shrimp, swiss, mushrooms, fried egg, coleslaw burger with a side of buffalo sauce, spicy gravy, and inferno sauce- again the burger itself was juicy, well seasoned, and well cooked. The shrimp was large, lots of mushroom, the fried egg was over hard-so no drippy yolk- and the coleslaw had a really great flavor profile. I dipped my fries in the buffalo and inferno sauce, while I dipped my burger in the spicy gravy. All the sauces were absolutely addictive. I am going to find myself craving another burger very quickly. Hubby got the soft shell crab sandwich special- which had a very LARGE crab, perfectly breaded with a nice crisp-not too much breading fluff-and just enough spicy aioli to give the sandwich a moistness without drowning the crab. The fries were fried hard, crispy, and full of flavor. Everything hit the spot wonderfully! Definitely going to make sure we go again soon! I visited state fare on a packed evening, 6-17-24 for date night with my love for dinner. Our waitress was very nice she said my loves, beautiful amongst a lot of loving caring endearing descriptions which we've never experienced anywhere else but I'm like she must be well mannered or from the south because it was like that with the table behind us!. We ordered the cheesesteaks with the works!, it came with fries! The cheesesteaks were very meat filled to the top of the bread!! Very filling indeed. Got a cherry coke from the bar with brandy infused cherries which weren't as bad as I thought!!.. the spot was very much a chill vibe, ambience was decorative with colorful paintings of celebrities on each wall , Excellent poppin playlist!! 6/22: COVID19 Update Restaurant has a "full parking lot" for outdoor seating and offering inside seating.. no bar seating. Menus are available by SCANning a barcode on the tables to your phone! For Happy Hour, 2-5pm, appetizers are no longer half off- only drinks. I ordered the Fried Lamp chops. You get 4. They were okay. Not really a fan of fried lamb chops. So my still outcome is that Food here is still mediocore. Nothing to write home about. Server was nice. Hmmm, this is a one and done for me. My husband eats here quite often as it's near his office so he suggested I visit with him since I was in town. First impression, had to park way too far away. As a native Marylander, I know it's busy up in DC but it was a long walk from where we parked. Second impression, too flipping noisy. This place is deafening. Like really loud. The dining area is small and the tables are quite close to each other. The ladies room has three stalls and one was out of order. Blerg. Onto the food, the crab dip was quite good. The pita chips that were served with it were delicious, according to hubby - I didn't eat the chips. My husband ordered his usual cobb salad and liked it. I ordered the bookmaker salad without onions - meh. I just didn't like it. The hard boiled eggs had that yukky green tint. Gross. The place was mobbed so they obviously have local fans but I didn't like the loud atmosphere, the lackluster food and the long trek. $48 before tip, not worth it. However, shout out to Sara. My family has dined at State Fare often over the last three years, as we spend a lot of time at UMBC. It was our favorite place until August 18, 2025. I was surprised that the waitress informed us that a 20% gratuity would be automatically added to our check if we ordered something at happy hour pricing. We were hearing this for the first time, and we dine there a lot. We were okay with it and ordered several appetizers. However, the waitress omitted that the gratuity was 20% of the menu price, not the happy hour price, which explained why we received poor service. For happy hour, we were expected to pay half price for the item and tip 20% of the full price of the item, even though the service we received didn't warrant a tip at any price for any item. I was still willing to tip based on our spending, not the menu price, since the service didn't warrant such a tip. I refused to pay it, so we were charged the regular menu price for the items instead of the half-price happy hour price. I wasn't pleased, but I paid full price for the appetizers because gratitude is earned, not a reward for the restaurant providing happy hour deals. I was so appalled and disappointed. This place was really nice. I was actually trying to go to Atwater's but there was no room. So I went in-not expecting much... but to my surprise. Sheesh !!! I ate at the bar. Got a build your own burger which was really good. And a bowl of chili. I'm So amazed that I ha e to come here again. So is so much on the menu I want to try. Plus I need to break in that happy hour..... stay tuned. So I would have gave 5 stars but the bartender forgot about my chili. I waited like 40 minutes for it. I came here for the first time yesterday. I tried the crispy brussel sprouts, mussels, and crab cake sandwhich. The brussel sprouts were very good. The balsamic glaze really topped it off. The crab cake sandwhich was okay, but needed more flavor. Also if you're looking for lump meat, this isn't the crab cake for you. The mussels were good. I wish they were in a bit more juice. The customer service here really needed some work. Although it was a Friday around 5, it was not busy enough for the service to lack in the ways it did. Our waitress brought our check without us asking, even though we weren't done drinking, which was weird to me. We switched to the bar and I made attempts to get the attention of someone (3-4 people behind the bar), but it took over five minutes for someone to come over, so that I could ask for a menu. I ordered the same drink I had when I was on the patio (ginger+juice). After the bar tender made my drink, I saw him put away crown royal. He brought my drink over and I asked another bar tender about it. The first bar tender claimed he didn't make the drink with crown royal (supposed to be made with Bulleit Rye), but it tasted very different than when I had it on the patio. Nevertheless, I drank it because I didn't want to bother. Would I come here again on my own? Probably not. We finally got the opportunity to get dinner at State Fare in Catonsville a few weeks ago. This was our first visit to State Fare. I have heard so many rave reviews of the place over the past few years. I think that the folks that are talking it up are going overboard quite a bit. First of all, the place is attractive. The decor is fun and casual. The artwork of pop music artist portraits is very fun. It is nice to have a place of this type in our little town of Catonsville in the 21228. We went as a group after my partner was in a bridge tournament. We had 7 people total. When our food came out several of the orders were mixed up or incorrect. The folks that got the orders that needed to be corrected told the person that brought the food to us, who was a food runner not our actual server. They didn't do anything about it and when the server got to us it was news to her that there were mistakes in the order. Our waitress was actually rather snarky about it. And I could see how you could be snarky if the food was great but honestly the food was about the level of Applebees. I ordered a chicken parm hoagie and it came with battered fries. It doesn't mention anywhere on the menu copy that I had that they serve battered fries because honestly I would have ordered any other side. I really don't like battered fries. My sandwich was bland and the bread was kind of soggy. My partner got a chicken dish with a cream sauce and I tasted it and the sauce was thick and heavy and the sauce should not have been thick and heavy. When it came time to pay for our food the waitress made a big deal because someone asked if we could split the check and apparently they don't normally split checks. It wasn't a deal breaker we all could have figured out a way to divide it but just the mention of splitting the check started the server on a mini rant about how they aren't supposed to do that. This place has lots of parking. They have bathrooms. The decor is cute. The food is mediocre and kind of pricy. The serving size was generous. This place is alright. Came in with the family to try it out. First off, the Brussel Sprouts appetizer is amazing. Perfectly carmelized topped with bacon and balsamic glaze, it was honestly the most memorable part of the meal. My mother and brother got the salmon sandwich and crab cake sandwich; each reported that the sandwiches weren't stellar, but overall solid. My son got the Steve-O from the all day breakfast option - it's your basic but reliable eggs, meat, and toast dish. I went for the roasted rockfish which was served with those same brussel sprouts, mushrooms, and topped with hollandaise sauce. A bit pricey, but very well done. I would get it again. The drink I had (paloma) was okay. They do have a solid beer selection both on draft and in cans. Lots of folks come for the happy hour specials to enjoy the drinks and food. When I tell you that every single thing was amazing!!!!!??? Flavorful and so tasty! I had 2 tropical flavor mimosas and my friend had 2 special order margaritas and they were not only half price but so good!! The service was superb! I love State Fare. They have an excellent Happy Hour from 2-5 M-F. I typically go for the half off drinks and end up getting the honey old bay wings (so delicious) and a cheeseburger. Today, I decided to try something different and get the fish and grits. The fish was fried to perfection and the grits were nice and creamy, however the spiciness was so overwhelming that I couldn't enjoy it. My mouth was on FIRE. To their defense, it was listed as "hot". I just didn't expect it to be THAT hot. So keep that in mind if you decide to try it. I still love this place and would absolutely recommend it. read more

I drove past this place many times, it use to be the old Friendly's Restaurant I used to take my kids to when they were younger. They have indoor and outdoor dining. We sat inside because it was a little chilly. They weren't that busy and we were Greeted and seated. Our Waiter he didn't give his name, came over and took our drink orders. Reading the reviews and actually going here I'm wondering if the people were in the same place that I was in? Maybe not? Service was really good. The host greeted us immediately and sat us down. The bar was packed, I think this may be the place for people who live close by to hang out. I can say I was a little overwhelmed with the menu options. There were a lot of items. We tried the regular brussel sprouts which were good, crab dip (a different version of crab dip, it didn't include cream cheese), chicken fried lamb chops, old bay wings and meatballs. All were pretty good. I noticed a few people deducted ratings because the name is Maryland fare but the photos inside are of celebrities. I was thinking maybe the paintings are from a local artist? I don't know. Either way the place has crab cakes and all kinds of old bay infused items on the menu. I enjoyed my time here. First, the staff is always welcoming and friendly. They have plenty of outdoor seating. The space is clean and I've always felt comfortable there. The food and drinks can be hit or miss. My friends and I joke that this is a BYOS (bring your own seasonings) establishment. I've experienced the brussel sprouts being perfectly crispy and drizzled with balsamic glaze, as described on the menu. Other times they've been soggy and swimming in balsamic glaze. There have been times that I've enjoyed the buffalo chicken wrap. On one occasion, the wrap was dry. I asked for extra buffalo sauce and blue cheese dressing multiple times but it never came to the table. In my server's defense, it was busy and I understand that she had other priorities. I met my cousin at this fine establishment to celebrate her joining the 30 and over club. Speaking of clubs, this place was packed like one. We were told our table would be a 20-30 minute wait. It ended up being over 45 minutes. Not an awful long wait so no complaints there. It was a nice day and people were out and about. We were seated and greeted pretty quickly. Our server was honest. She had a down to earth but I know my job vibe. She got all the orders right and was very chill. Service was pretty good. The crab dip was delectable. I just wished it came with more bread. I had to dip my chicken wings in the crab dip. Believe it or not, it was still quite delicious. Speaking of wings, there was nothing wrong with them but it was nothing to write home about. My pancakes were pretty tasty, however the pancake to syrup ratio was off. I ran out of syrup halfway through my stack. The potato's were good and my eggs were cooked perfectly. Solid crisp, tender and juicy, and, combined w/ the flat mac, made a tasty combination. The flavors complimented well. Individually, though, they were both underwhelming. My boyfriend sent it back to be reheated and the chef returned a practically new dish - creamy and savory. Breakfast burrito - not bad. Would be better with salsa or some accompanying sauce. Overall, the drinks were weak. If you're looking for a stronger and/or well-balanced cocktail, look elsewhwere. read more

I decided to meet a friend for brunch and this was his selection so why not! I arrived and there was plenty of parking in the lot and in the street. They have a ton of outdoor seating that was appropriately distanced. We walk in and first available was outside and I was happy with that. It was a bit chilly today but I went and grabbed my jacket from the car and all was good. We both ordered salad. I had the Cobb Salad with crispy chicken. Soooo good. It came with ranch dressing and all the fixings. My friend had a Caesar with salmon and shrimp. Both were delicious and I would definitely come back. Pretty tasty but a little greasy. We moved to the deviled eggs. I didn't care for them. They had too much seasoning and I didn't expect for them to be hot...sort of like wasabi. The Old Bay calamari was not a hit either. Too much Old Bay and they were overcooked. What did I like? The Bookmaker Salad was the best! I plan to return just for this salad. My friends and I came to State Fare because we were in the Patapsco Park area, and it was right when restaurants were finally opening back up after quarantine. We tried calling multiple times but no one picked up so it was impossible to make reservations. When we finally arrived, we were told the wait would take an hour long. While waiting, we observed everyone eating, and most folks took precautions to eat outside in tents. When we were finally seated, we were starving and ordered a bunch of dishes, from fried chicken wings with buffalo sauce, chicken/egg biscuit, salmon entree, to mac and cheese with buffalo chicken. Unfortunately, they were not as good as it described on the menu. We were shocked how underwhelming and substandard the dishes were. The ingredients didn't taste fresh and the temperature was more lukewarm. In fact, I still remember being disappointed that the chicken wings were rubbery and tasteless. The entire bill was around $90. I think State Fare might have been struggling with the amount of customers and couldn't keep up with the demand. I think there are some ways to reduce these issues by having a working phone line so that someone can handle reservations, a website where you can make a reservation, or simply hire a better chef. read more
