I settled on an appetizer of Kung Pao Brussel sprouts (very good) and the vegetarian sandwich. The server made the suggestion of adding some pickled veggies to the sandwich to give it more flavor, and she was RIGHT. The sandwich would have been very dull without the addition of the pickled veggies. The fries were crispy and full of flavor. Arrived at 615pm on a Wednesday after driving 7 hours. Waitress said it would be 2 hours until they had a table as a party of 6 had just arrived. Apparently they serve 5 course dinners here? 2 hours is a very long time for diners to eat...impressively unimpressive, here's the best pic we could get of the place given they do not allow you to go inside their black curtains without having a table. Balanced decor with the right amount of edge and coziness. Cocktails designed with intelligence and knowledge. This is everything that the larger cities are privileged enough to have in spades. One of their great assets is having a master baker in house. She makes the noodles for their ramen which have a beautiful texture, density and flavor. I manage a popular ramen restaurant in the PNW and we don't even make our noodles in-house. The baked goods for other key menu items like lobster benedict, burgers and sandwiches are all so rich and fluffy. The brunch pastries are also mind-blowingly good! And since the menu changes frequently, there are endless opportunities to test this lady's impressive range. The staff is always super friendly, attentive, and on point in all areas of execution. Brittany in particular is a real gem. Ask for her for a well-guided and hospitable experience. The chef and owner clearly knows what good restauranting is all about. After the cover review in DownEast we had to visit State Lunch for lunch. It was perfect, maybe our best dining experience in Maine since moving here two years ago. My husband had the special grits with shrimp and pancetta, and it was absolutely delicious. I thought I didn't like grits. I was wrong. I got the cheeseburger minus cheese, and it was The Perfect Burger. Done rare as requested, delightul dijon aioli, yummy brioche bun. The fries with aioli might be the best I've eaten, fried with herbs and sprinkled with parm. For dessert we had the house-made lemon-berry cake, which is dense and wonderful with strawberry fondant and berries between layers. The owner Sean came by to say hi, and Aaron our bar tender (we ate at the bar) was good. The small space is charmingly modern. All in all a terrific place! read more

This is a fantastic spot to grab a meal and a drink in the city of Augusta! Given how good this place is, I was surprised by how quiet it was. We've been here twice, and both times the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the food has been spectacular! The 2 meals I've had are the lamb burger and the Bahn-Mi. The cocktail menu is very creative. The spirits list reveals a group of bartenders that really know their craft. The food menu is equally creative. My simple pasta dish was really elevated by adding micro greens and using high quality ingrediants. The Halibut special had a couscous base that was a complex combination of flavors. There were four or five cocktail and dinner specials so don't feel limited by what you see online. We travel extensively. We rarely go to a restaurant twice unless the value and experience are exceptional. Half way through our meal, we were trying to figure out how to get a second visit in for our weekend. We could not find a time to make it work. This restaurant is worth considering a return trip to Maine next summer! read more

I've been holding off to review State Lunch because I couldn't quite identify what keeps bringing me back. I've been 10+ times now and can confidently say this is a 12/10 experience (please excuse the Cony math. I know yelp only has a 5-star rating but I think you get the point). The Reason: State lunch creates an experience that successfully balances big city dining with local comfort at a reasonable cost. This type of VPB (value per bite) is rare given the quality of food. For those new to the VPB scaling system, it is typically applied to quantity over quality style restaurants. That's certainly not the case here. Keep reading for some of our "flavorite" options. The staff cannot be overlooked. They are always delightful and genuinely care about your experience. They are attentive regardless if you are there for drinks, apps, dinner or dessert (or all of the above!). The team here creates a comfortable experience for all dining scenarios. Lastly, the layout is spectacular where the bar area never overwhelms diners and vice versa. A combination of high tops, tables and bar seating gives customers the option to decide what fits their situation. The Menu: State lunch offers a quality menu that fulfills nearly every customers appetite. I'd suggest the wings, brussels sprouts, or meatballs as appetizers. They set the stage for the flavor explosion you'll find in the main dishes. The mussels are a MUST order. And I mean must order (they are locally grown and harvested from Dewey's Shellfish in Damariscotta). If you pass up on this option, you'll regret it worse than the 6 teams who drafted QB's before TB12 in the 2000 draft. Don't sleep on The State Lunch Burger either. It's a classic burger that will make you re-evaluate what you previously considered a "good burger" (make sure you double up on the fries. You won't have to worry about leftovers, TRUST me!). All of the Ramen Bowl options are solid. My personal favorite is to add the savory pork which adds another element of flavor. All together State Lunch offers a unique dining experience and focuses on the right things that positively impact the dining experience. Grabbed lunch here while visiting over the July 4th weekend. This was only one of three restaurants/bars open on the block. Chose this place because of the ramen, which I thought was ok. Ordered the shio, shrimp and spicy veggie and enjoyed the spicy veggie out of the three. Also ordered the hamburger, which took a while to come out and then was wrong when a cheeseburger came out. Normally, I would consider that two stars, but the waitress was really nice and ended up discounting the burger. Burger was a little messy, but tasty. Tonight was our second visit and I would rate both visits as 5 stars. The 1st visit was on May 20th, which was one of the first days that restaurants were allowed to open in ME during the pandemic. It was to celebrate my birthday and the margarita special was so delicious. We ordered the steamed Bao Buns and Brussels sprouts apps which were to die for. Not sure which was better. We also both ordered the pork ramen and were pleasantly surprised how great it was, given that our last ramen experience was at a top restaurant in Manhattan. We loved the whole dining experience. We returned tonight and had a reservation at 7pm, but a party of two seemed to be overstaying their welcome. It's tough times for these restaurants during this pandemic. They are limited on seating and they hope that a reservation will leave after 1.5-2 hours. My husband and I are well aware that it's tough times, but the owner and staff still offered us a complimentary beverage/dessert for the inconvenience. It was greatly appreciated. We also enjoyed the same appetizers once again. For dinner my husband got the very filling and tasty chicken and waffles. While I had the ramen, but I spiced it up with chili oil x2. So delicious. The food is beyond amazing with everything made in house except for the ketchup. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Owner also delivered our meal before and was a pleasure to speak with.
