My 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 alone accounted for $12,000 of that for what was promised to be a "bulletproof" build for my hauling business. Instead of a reliable work truck, I have been met with repeated mechanical failures, thousands in towing fees, and a complete lack of professional decency. The Mechanical Failures: My stock transmission lasted 250k miles of heavy hauling. Bill's "bulletproof" build hasn't even made it 50k miles. The truck has been back to his shop three times for the same failures. Most recently, I was stranded in Tucson with no forward gears. When I pulled the codes, they pointed directly to parts Bill claimed were "better than OEM" and "guaranteed not to fail." They failed. Furthermore, when the truck was first towed in, the ECM was perfect. When I got it back, the ECM was shorted and burnt. Bill took zero responsibility, forcing me to source a replacement myself. The Warranty & Conduct: Bill talks a big game about "standing behind his work," especially when bad-mouthing other shops, but he does not honor his own word. Every time his work fails, he becomes argumentative, dismissive, and condescending. He treated me like an "ignorant fool" despite my three decades in the industry. He demands the truck be towed back to him (from Show Low or Tucson) but refuses to cover the massive towing costs caused by his faulty workmanship. He consistently looks for excuses to void the warranty rather than fixing the problem. The Financial Toll: Between the original $12k build, the $10k spent at a previous shop (which Bill promised to rectify), and the now-estimated $7,500 to finally fix this correctly elsewhere, I will have $30,000+ into a transmission for a 2006 truck. The Verdict: Do not be fooled by the bravado or the promises of a "30-year guarantee." Bill showed no kindness or decency to a family that spent $50,000 at his shop. I would never even consider anyone else, and that is because he really knows his stuff, he has a memory and technical ability that far exceeds anyone that I know in this field. In many cases he not only replaces the wear materials during a rebuild, but he makes modifications or upgrades to fix the manufacturer's weaknesses. We taken 4-5 cars to Bill over the years. I left a 5 star review for him, sent friends/family to him & asked them to leave reviews-I tipped his guys when work was done..things seemed fine. When a problem showed up that Bill charged us for & couldn't fix, Bill showed his true colors. The call is recorded & I'm happy to share it. Bill claims to have a voicemail from me that he said was negative. Please, ask Bill for that VM so you can hear how I maintained my composure & was professional even though I was frustrated & had to tell Bill that he didn't solve the problem that we paid him to solve (we paid Bill & State to State to completely rebuild a transmission, but the original problem persisted). Then listen to my call with him, & listen to him screaming/swearing at me, telling me he had places to go, "get to the f*cking point" etc. It was truly shocking. Worst service experience I've ever had in my life. Look at my Yelp account, 99% of my reviews are 5 star, so when I leave a negative it takes A LOT for me to do that. I usually just say nothing if I have a bad experience somewhere. We brought a 57 Chevy to Bill around '16. The car leaked fluid everywhere after just sitting for a few days. Bill said it wasn't a small fix, & it needed to be completely rebuilt, so we paid Bill to do the job. When we picked the car up, Bill went on about how the job was a total loss, he did us a huge favor & had to rebuild it 2x, he just ate the parts, lost everything/made no money, but Bill is a great guy & stuck to the bid. Within 2 weeks, the car dumped all of it's fluid all over the ground just like before. I called Bill. Know what he said? "That's how those old Powerglide transmissions are. If you let them sit for any period of time, they just dump their fluid out." Well that would've been wonderful to know up front-rather relevant data to have wouldn't you say? Why did we pay Bill to rebuild the transmission & why was this suggested as a fix? (How did they even sell these cars in the late 50's on dealership lots that apparently had trans fluid underneath every car that sat on the lot a few days?) We still couldn't drive it anywhere with confidence. Years later ('23) I developed health problems & we needed to sell the car. I spoke with her father who built & drove the car & asked if he had addressed the trans leak problem. He said Bill told him that it was the dipstick that was leaking. I said he told me "all Powerglides just leaked". He said he didn't recall anything about Powerglides leaking when they just sat (he's in his 80's/from that generation). So I called Bill 10/21 at 10am & left a VM. After not hearing back from Bill by 10/25 at the end of the day (3:45) I called Bill. I told him I left a VM on 10/21 & hadn't heard back so I thought I'd reach out again. He was instantly very upset & said "yeah I couldn't hear anything I have phone problems". Hearing how upset he was I tried to diffuse the situation & I said "I'm sorry Bill I came across wrong, I'm sure it was on my end because I have phone problems sometimes". I explained who I was.. "we brought a '57 Chevy in for a rebuild & it leaked after.." Bill cut me off & said in an irritated tone "yeah I heard your negative VM & I know who you are, I remember everything about the car, you, your father in law, what do you want?" Then he said "I'm in a hurry/out of here by 4 so what do you want?" (So he lied through his teeth about not hearing the message & didn't know who it was) I tried to speak again..I couldn't. The call was 12 minutes long. Bill just let me have it. It was our problem, not his. Powerglides just leak. I just let him yell for a while then I said "You sound pretty upset Bill, sounds like I'm the problem here & I've done something wrong" He went on again, out of his mind, swearing at me, telling me he's got things to do, "get to the f*cking point." I couldn't speak. I said "Bill I've been been letting you talk this entire time & haven't been able to say the reason I called. "Well I've told you! These things can't sit at all or they leak, GET TO THE F*CKING POINT!" All l was able to say was that I had health problems & had to sell the car, I said "Bill I'm not asking you to work on the car, I'm not asking for money from you..." he interrupted me & went off again.. after 12 solid minutes of him yelling about how our car is a pain in his ass, the profanity etc. I hung up instead of taking more abuse. Here is what I was going to say Bill: as I mentioned I wasn't going to ask you for a red cent, nor was I going to ask you to lift a finger to help us-you made your money & made it clear you wouldn't help us years ago-I was just going to say "Ken told me told me the leak was coming from the dipstick, but you told me Powerglides just dump all their fluid if they're not driven for more than 3 days, which is it so we can fix it?" but in 12 minutes of your screaming I couldn't. I bought a new transmission from them about 10 months ago and I already need to replace it. About a month after spending $6000 on a new transmission, I noticed a leak. I sent it to my main mechanic thinking it was the radiator and spent a fortune trying to figure out what was leaking since it couldn't possibly be the new transmission. Well, turns out it WAS the transmission (State to State forgot to tighten a fitting) and by the time we realized it, it was too late. I'm about 1000 miles past the warranty State to State provided so they won't do anything, all I can do is tell you DO NOT USE STATE TO STATE UNLESS YOU WANT TO BUY A NEW TRANSMISSION EVERY YEAR. State to State Transmissions refused to even listen to me on the phone. He wasn't interested fixing my transmission in my Corvette to stock specifications. I upgraded the gears from the stock 3.15's to the stock 3.42's on the Corvette right after I bought it 22 years ago. He told me that I would need a $1500 upgrade to the stock transmission to match the performance enhancements I made to the car after I changed the gears. Total upsell BS! The transmission held up for more than 22 years and 65k miles. It only failed due to catastrophic leak at the tranny cooler. It was durable enough for the last 22 years. I'm sure it would be fine for another 20. I don't trust guys who talk to you like you don't know what they're talking about. He wouldn't put the original gears or torque converter with 1500 mile on them back in the car either. I read through his BS and ended the call. read more

BILL IS THE MAN! Here's my story. I'm 22, just moved here from Texas on my own, and have absolutely no family out here. my car broke down on Tuesday night in the middle of the US 60 down in MESA on my way home from work and I was TERRIFIED. I took it to a shop near my apartment at first and they kept my car for two days - telling me they would call me with any updates. i didnt hear anything from them. finally I had to call them to figure out what was up and they told me my entire transmission was shot and i would need to pay AT LEAST $1500 for a USED transmission (their words). I didnt trust it so i said fuck that and started calling around. I actually called a place closer to my home that RECOMMENDED Bill's shop. their exact words in response to my problem were "this guy is the ONLY guy in the Valley I trust. he is incredibly honest, fair and wont throw out a transmission unless he absolutely has to. call him, his name is Bill." you KNOW that says A LOT about someone if another shop recommends him and his services over their own. So long story short, I got my car up to Bill's shop and told him what was going on. I dont know SHIT about cars - so usually people try to take advantage of me, but Bill didnt. he went on to tell me the different kinds of things that could be wrong just based on my half-assed explanation of what happened. he knows his shit, hes been doing this for 40 years!!!! Good guys, they know their stuff. I had a issue with my older camaro and through some confusion it ended up at a different shop and the owner there was a scumbag. Never inspected the car just called me and told me it needed a clutch which was bs. I'm not a certified ASE master tech or anything but I did graduate from auto technology and am at least competent and I've had my car for 16 years so I know it well enough. Had it towed to state to state, felt much more comfortable after talking with them. It was the slave cylinder so they replaced it and everything is all good. They also said my clutch looked brand new which of course I had it replaced 2 years prior so everything they said lined up perfectly and was the opposite of the first shop I had dealings with. Another shop referred us to State to State because we have a check engine light on and the code was for a torque converter in the transmission. We brought our van in (a 5 year old van) and my husband spoke to whoever was working at the front desk. They didn't even look at our vehicle and instantly told my husband that he's seen several of the same vehicle come in lately and the transmission is bad so he would have to replace it and it would cost us $4,000. Again, he did not look at our vehicle, did not run the code himself, nothing. Just went instantly to telling us our whole transmission is bad and needs replaced. Then he offered to buy our van for $500. FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS. I have heard that Bill is great, and I really hope the person that we dealt with today was not Bill. Whether they are right or not, we won't know because he did not even look at our vehicle. Our previous mechanic passed away in a motorcycle accident, and it is near impossible these days to find an honest mechanic that does good work and stands by it. I think everyone has had that morning where everything is perfect until you go to leave for work, and you realize your car has other plans. This morning I started down my street and realized that my car wasn't shifting. The speedometer wasn't moving at all either. Long story short, my boss helped me get my car to State to State Transmissions. As soon as I sat in the office and started explaining, Bill (he was the long-haired gentleman in the office. I'm pretty sure that was his name, but I'm not 100%), told me he thought he knew the problem already and that it shouldn't be a hard fix. I had bill rebuild my trans for $3791 and he gave me a two year warranty. About a month later the tranny went out and he said it was my fault because we put the wrong shift pattern in it which caused this tranny to go away. I then gave him a additional $1750 to repair it and put a new 2000 stall torque converter in it and brought it back to him to verify that the transmission shift pattern was okay and sign off on it which he did. I returned the truck to him to inspect it as the torque converter stall creeped up to 3200 and he charged me an additional $750 to repair it so much for the warranty. Two weeks later this 800hp tranny is now broke. I am 75yrs old and do not drag race the truck although I like power. I believe that he does not know how to build a high performance trans and the torque converter manufacture is of poor quality. I have spent $6291 and still have a junk tranny read more

I know this place has had great reviews but I did not have a great experience. My transmission went out and I paid State to State over $3,000 dollars to rebuild it. I have had nothing but problems since. I have had to go back to them 3 or 4 times because. They put in a couple valves in wrong which made my car run rough and my check engine light kept coming on so I had to go to my regular mechanic and he fixed their mistake and didn't charge me for doing it. State to State also replaced my radiator then it was leaking so I had to go back to them to have them order another one and then they put in the radiator so being without a car every couple weeks when I drive 30 miles to work was not cool. Now my check engine light came on again and I went back to my regular mechanic and State to State put in one of the hoses in wrong so again my regular mechanic fixed their mistake and again didn't charge me for it. Now I understand things happen with cars but if I am paying that much for a rebuilt transmission and new radiator I expect my car to run perfect. This has been a nightmare for me because I drive so far to work. I will not be coming back to this place again or ever recommend it to anyone so go at your own risk. read more

Had my truck trans rebuilt a few yrs ago and now it's being rebuilt again.Brought it back for a leak and a shifting problem a while after and they temp fixed.New repair shop did a face plant when he opened up and seen such horrible work, he said your 2nd gear band is destroyed and everything else that should have been replaced is as well.My receipt conflicts what has supposedly been repaired. I personally know people who bring their high end vehicles to who I'm currently using and would use nobody else.Stay away from State to State. read more
