We were able to be seated right away on a Monday night, but our food took a bit longer than we expected. We also had to verbally flag down a waiter in order to get our check after we were done eating, even though our plates were stacked at the edge of the table and we were trying to make eye contact with multiple servers. I know we were in Solana Beach, but I would not classify this as a two dollar sign restaurant. The sushi was good. Nothing special for the elevated price, although some of the rolls were fairly unique they did not sound appealing. This is a great sushi spot for those who are looking for a trendy place by the ocean and do some people watching along the Coast Highway 101. We ordered the Slamin' Salmon, which came with a slice of lemon in the roll. It tasted refreshing and was an absolute work of art! The Disco Inferno had spicy mayo drizzled on top, and had the perfect amount of heat. For those who are newcomers to sushi, the Avocado Tuna was savory with a very soft texture that melts in your mouth. On vacation from San Francisco staying in Solano Beach. Stopped in for dinner Sunday night and Station Sushi was packed with locals. A quick 10 minute wait and we were seated in the fun crowded busy front patio. Very nice crowd and wait staff were very helpful. Food was delicious, would rate sushi mid-upper level along with kids teriyaki plate. FYI: If you have kids...Be prepared wait staff are very busy and food takes time to come out. One main issue we had was our waitress incorrectly took our order. We ordered sashimi and our sushi came out nigiri (with rice). We were very hungry and ate what we could. Good Save Station Sushi! Afterwards our waitress asked "...no rice?" We advised her what happened and she adjusted the bill. Final bill +$100 for two adults w/one 5 year old. Last issue that was very apparent and a possible safety issue. They allowed a group of customers with two large dogs that were seated next to us. The dogs essentially were underneath our table and the adjacent tables or in the very narrow walkway. People walking and the wait staff had to step over the dogs (not wanting to step on them) or wait and ask the group to politely move the dogs. Yes the dogs were friendly but in an eating establishment overly friendly dogs become a disruption. To the point where it was a safety concern that someone tripping or falling onto a table would happen. I did say ...crowded busy front patio... Value not quite there. They have lunch specials, which is what we took advantage of. However, lunch still added up to $40 for two, tax and tip included. No alcohol ordered and still that expensive! We got a salmon and tuna poke bowl with tempura (tempura is an extra $3-4), along with the matrix roll. Both came with miso OR salad (not both). They also do not have bento boxes, which is what I usually go for. I feel like most Japanese places have meals/specials that come with miso, salad AND rice. This place doesn't. Stopped by here before a concert at belly up. I have been here once a few years ago and i remember it being very good. Got here at about 6 on Saturday night. A few parking spots behind but lots around due to other businesses being closed. During the day, it may be hard to find parking. Plenty of seats outside and the heaters made it feel like we were actually inside. Customer service: Immediately greeted and brought waters. The customer service was great. The food took a minute but they were busy. I am ok waiting a little it wasn't a crazy wait. Order was correct and it all came out at once. The food: The sushi was very fresh and tasty! We ordered the Maui Wowie, Mango Tango and Slippery when wet. The mango tango was probably my favorite with the slices of mango making it sweet and delicious. While walking to the restaurant I heard some people say, "what were we thinking that we could just arrive and get a table" so I'm assuming this place is ALWAYS packed. Not a bad thing! The sushi was good, not amazing but it was good. Philadelphia roll, funky (crazy?) monkey, and mango tango. All were okay, not mind blowing. Their tuna nachos are my favorites but I always also enjoy shishito peppers and the Monkey roll. You can also enjoy a draft Saporo ($3.5) or a nice Sake/large bottled beer combination for $7. People say you shouldn't read reviews, that you should go anywhere you want and make up your own mind. When it comes to Yelp, I'm typically of the opinion that you should find friends that share your tastes, and learn to trust what they have to say. Of course, I don't always follow my own advice, and that's why I end up going places like Station Sushi. I've passed by Station on my way to Pizza Port a number of times and always been curious if it was any good. Once we asked a dining patron what they thought and we received a glowing recommendation that it was the best sushi in San Diego, while they chowed down on specials in a near empty restaurant during the dinner rush. In spite of that endorsement, when asked if I wanted to go somewhere new to eat in Solana Beach, I gave a shrug of ascent and drove here. First off, I like the decor. It's a hole in the wall place that I would normally be excited about. It's near the beach, it's a bit scuzzy, but homey, and it has a very open to the outside atmosphere. To me, if you look as dingy as this and are still surviving, then the food must be amazing. Even after our experience, I still like the overall aesthetic. We took a seat at the bar, and settled in to see what they had to offer. We started with the basics, a California and Philadelphia Roll. Both were on the small side, but nicely packed and rolled up well. Neither fell apart and retained shape even after dipping in wasabi and soy sauce. As far as technique goes, Station Sushi is on point. As for the taste, neither really went beyond average; not much sweetness to the crab mix, none of that fatty richness to the avocado ... good, but not much more. Next up was some Salmon Nigiri, another staple I always try when going somewhere new. Here there was a good sized thickness to the cut of fish and it melted nicely on the tongue. Nowhere near the best I've ever had, but it was a step above average. I then had the Bacon Bliss Roll, a wonderful sounding concoction of albacore, avocado, tuna, garlic ponzu and crisped up bacon. It was beautiful to behold, and such a genius idea that I had to marvel as to why I had never seen anything like it before. Then I took a bite. The entirety of it, the salty bacon, the smooth avocado, the fresh fish, it was completely smothered under the tang of that ponzu sauce. You could nibble of bit of the bacon on its own, sampling the crispy fat of how bacon should taste like. But, the moment you put the entire roll in your mouth, it is overwhelmed by the citrus it had been soaked in. Taste, texture, and the blend of those ingredients, none of it mattered in the face of that ponzu. Needless to say, the roll was an extreme disappointment. Our last plate was the Matrix Roll. Like the California, it was well made with care taken in the layering of the multiple types of shrimp and tuna across the top. And even though the heat of the spicy mayo came through with a good separation of flavors, it was still paired with a Thai chili sauce that I can best describe as cloyingly sweet. Instead of a sugary accent that would compliment the avocado and fish, it was more of a syrup that I would bet came out of jug or bottle. Our son had the Chicken Katsu Plate, which they brought after we asked if they had anything like it on the kids' menu; I'll harp more on that a bit later. The chicken itself was juicy, well fried, and quite tasty without feeling greasy. It was a huge portion, served with rice and vegetables that were likely steamed in a bag (as most of the color had been drained from them), and what he left served me well for dinner that night. The Miso that came with it was a basic soup you see clones of everywhere, and the salad was a standard mix with ginger (I'm guessing) dressing tossed on top. But, aside from the not so good food, over cooked veggies, and absurd sauces (damn that ponzu!), I come to my biggest gripe about our lunch ... the cost. For salmon nigiri, two small rolls, two larger rolls, and lunch for a kid, we spent $82.65. I don't mind spending that much elsewhere; our last trip to Blue Ocean cost about $100, but it stuffed four hungry people, including a 6'9" eighteen year old with a bottomless pit for a stomach. Here, we went away just no longer hungry, but with a bad taste in our mouths. To break it down, the katsu alone was $13, even though we had specifically noted it was for a five year old, they didn't bring an $8 kid's plate that would have made more sense. The Matrix and Bacon were $16 apiece and very much not worth it. The same cost at Love Boat will get you a Surf & Turf with seared filet mignon that would blow your god damned mind. We may have just had an off-day, but what we had makes it tough to justify trying another big roll that may disappoint as much as what we tried. Mix in California Rolls that are half the price and a far cry better elsewhere, and Station Sushi may be off limits to us in the future. read more

In all my years of eating sushi, I've never experienced a big sushi bone in the fish. When we alerted the manager/ owner(not sure who she was), she didn't seem to care and was unapologetic. I am super picky when it comes to sushi and I must admit I actually forgot that sushi could look and taste like this. First of all maki rolls are huge. They are packed with fake crab meet and rice. The amount of actual raw fish in them is so small, I had hard time telling rolls apart. On top of that they got my order wrong...
