JACKPOT! We started with a few raw items clams, oysters and shrimp cocktail. Everything was of the upmost freshness. From there salad which was served tableside, soup, prime rib, lobster tail, twice baked potatoe and finished with bread pudding and rice pudding. Oh dear. Seemed new ownership were getting things back on track. The food for the most part was good. The wait staff, very inexperienced, apart from a lovely lady. The two men stank of stale cigarettes. I suspect the new dark uniform shirts are not being washed for each shift. Both male servers needed prompting for items forgotten. My last visit was 25 years ago and I wish I never went back so I could have kept those good memories of Steak Dianne and Bananas Foster intact. Instead I dropped $225 on a very mediocre, tasteless dinner. The salad was awful with off tasting lettuce, blue cheese dressing with no discernible blue cheese, and deep fried croutons that tasted of old oil. The seafood sampler was sparse with 2 briny oysters, 2 metallic clams, 2 fairly large shrimp, and a small dollop of crab. The soups were old school and heavy. Cream of Crab and Snapper were just ok and likely came from a frozen soup base. The fillets were way under seasoned. They had no taste. Cooked to proper temperature, but really no sear. The twice baked potato was awful. A glue like substance in an under cooked potato shell. It was nicely browned on top. The Bananas Foster looked really good and the presentation was great. This place reminds me of a restaurant past its prime featured on a Kitchen Nightmare. I could see Chef Ramsey yelling about the quality of the food and imagine they have fallen into bad habits and short cuts. This steakhouse was absolutely amazing. You wouldn't know from the outside. It literally sits next to a shady looking motel. The inside had a nice feel to it. You will want to dress nice enough. There were no signs of snooty. The food was incredible. My boyfriend and I got the filet for 2. It was all table side dining. Everything was perfect to order. I was so impressed that I downloaded yelp just to give this restaurant 5 stars. The service was the best that I've seen in quite some time. Everyone was beyond friendly. My fiance never had prime rib before so when I told him that was what was on the menu for our wedding, he said he wanted to try it first before agreeing. He looked online for the best prime rib in Philly and that search somehow brought us over the bridge to Steak 38. He made the reservations so when I heard we were driving over to Jersey, I was a little skeptical. Then we get off the highway and pull into a motel... I honestly thought it was a joke. The inside in comparison to the outside is night and day. The inside has an ambiance that is nostalgic and romantic. We both got the prime rib and were not disappointed. I don't understand why people on here are complaining about the pricing of this place. $35 for a big slice of prime rib is NOTHING in comparison to some of the steak houses in Philadelphia, and the portion is HUGE (no thin slices here). It wasn't just the prime rib that impressed me, the service, the guy singing old crooners tunes, the tableside demonstrations, it was an experience that was incredible. My only regret is not saving room for dessert! My fiance and I used to go to the Capital Grille for our anniversary/special occasions and now I think we may be heading back over the bridge every once in a while. For dinner we enjoyed the 24 oz Ribeyes accompanied by a double cooked potato and green beans. The steak cooked to perfection and delicious. Went here looking for a large menu selection. Restaurant is attached to a motel and is small inside. No one seems to have a personality that works there. No fancy drink menu. They actually serve dinner in carts that they can barely navigate around the restaurant. I had the chicken francaise, which was excellent, but enough to feed three people. Uh. I have been meaning to try this place out for years. I finally get there and was so disappointed. It takes a lot to disappoint me too. First off, when you charge people $44 for a steak, you shouldn't be serving them on folding tables. The place is very crowded, and the bathroom is the size of a closet. On a Saturday night, the toilet paper was empty. So many poorly thought out logistics considering the cost to eat there. The food was good, with the potential of being so much better. The crab soup was delicious, except there were so many shells, I thought I would end up with a perforated bowel if I ate it all. Probably my 25,000 cup of crab soup in my life, and never, ever had so many shells. The caesar salad was all dark green ends, and no hearts of the romaine. The twice baked potato was a half of a potato that was not cooked through. The steak was good... a little over done, but that wasn't a problem for me. They don't offer any demi glaze or steak sauce though. The servers were good. No issues there at all. Cost was about $60pp. YMMV, but I will take a pass going forward. read more
