This Steak and Shake is really weird. Something strange always happens here, regardless of the time of day. Whether it's the young couple who brought their quart of Lactaid to share, or the old lady with the most ginormous drawn-on eyebrows I've ever seen, this place is like a pit-stop in the time space continuum. Maybe the corner of LaVista and North Druid Hills is a type of Bermuda Triangle. We once sat behind two sixty-somethings who were making out harder than Kim and Kanye ever have - at about 5:30 in the afternoon. Im telling you, this place is bizarre. I sat for 25-minutes and never got service, so I left and went through the drive through. Ten minutes layer with only on car ahead of me I just left. 35-minutes of frustration and no good order was ever placed, because they do not care. By the way, all of the tables where either occupied or had not been cleaned. The time was 12:33 PM. read more

So this is my first time eating inside and it will not happen again. Obviously they don't have enough staff. There are 7 groups of tables that I have counted that have not been cleaned from the last customers. I have attached the photos of the ones closest to me. The table that was sitting next to me said they have been waiting for 40 minutes for their food & a manager was supposed to come out and talk to them. They are still waiting at this point for both. They waited another 10-15 and walked out. I was told 8 minutes for our food we will see. Our drinks haven't been refilled in awhile. Our food came out in about 30 minutes and I had onions on the sand which that was supposed to be without. The lady who brought or food who was not our waitress refilled our drinks and made sure my sandwich was correct. She also apologized for the inconvenience. read more

Quick service, got all of the large order right. We are in love with our shakes. Location was not well lit but they were staffed!

I haven't been to a Steak n Shake since I was in college at a Greyhound Bus stop, so thought I'd pay homage to this location. Service was laughably bad. It took at least 20 minutes for any food to come out, and the kind server (she was super nice, but just not very good) put in my order as chicken instead of steak. Yes, I'm Hindu, but a girl needs some steak every once in a while. After all, this is STEAK n SHAKE. T's sandwich tasted SO BAD. I couldn't even bring myself to take a bite of the chicken. It just LOOKED BAD. After tasting T's sandwich......ooooogh The kind server comped my meal as we were running low on time, and had to leave before they could re-make my sandwich. I tipped accordingly and well, as I did eat the fries, and do know that she meant well and was probably overburdened. The milkshake tasted like it had MILDEW in it. And the manager wouldn't even try it and kept trying to give us replacement milkshakes. It only took 15 minutes of arguing, but we got our money back (and he never did taste the shake, despite providing us with a sample to try, which still tasted like utter shit). Then on the way out, an employee said they had had a lot of complaints. REALLY?! That's about the worst business practice I've ever witnessed . . . and I occasionally fly Delta. I noticed that S&S was advertising that they served breakfast. As breakfast is the meal I hate to prepare the most these days, I figured it was a good excuse to try it out. Their breakfast special is 2 eggs with the works. Which is 2 eggs anyway you want them, hashbrowns plus your choice in meats including sausage, bacon and ham plus your choice of breads such as grits, pancakes or toast. I opted for over-medium eggs as that is my default test to determine if they are listening. Its easy to do over easy and over-well. over-medium require the cook to actually think. They aced that which impressed me. I also opted for sausage patties. They were quite large as compared to most places that gives you half-dollar sized patties. These were twice that size easily. The wheat toast was served dry with a small selection of butter, jellies and jams. They even had some that were no/low sugar for those diabetics in the world like me. The hash browns are especially worth nothing. they were shredded potatoes with spices and then pressed into small medallion shapes. I didn't feel the need to add any salt or pepper to them. I had water instead of the usual juice or coffee so I can't comment on their recent bragging about serving Seattle's Best Coffee. But the aroma of it did fill the restaurant and was quite pleasant. And the price for this was $4.99. not bad at all. Easily comparable to places like Waffle House but with a much higher quality food and seating arrangements. All in all, a great place to grab a sit down breakfast. I'm sure I'll be trying it again. read more

I had wrote this place off so many times as "I"m never going back here" but yet, I went again. They did not let me down. You stand at the door waiting to be seated with employees looking at you and not saying anything or either they run hid to keep from having to greet you. The server was annoyed that he had to come out of hiding to wait on us, just stood over the table, and asked were we going to order anything. I told him I was waiting for a "hello" or "may I take your order". At least the food was quicker than normal and warm. It's a Steak & Shake. Which means my expectations aren't all that high. Before I go on, let me say that our food was okay. Having said that, let us also note that it was 4:30pm. Not exactly the frenetic rush of a lunch or dinner hour. Yet it took a while to get acknowledged and seated. And then there were delays with placing our order. It seemed to take a long time to get a drink order in, and a longer time to place an order for our food. The food itself came out in good time. And as I said, the food was okay--exactly what we expected. However, of the three orders we placed, there were two mistakes on the table. My friend specifically didn't want mustard on his meal (yet, there it was), and I specifically substituted a salad for my fries, yet I got a big pile of fries with my salad nowhere to be found. (In fact, they'd totally forgotten about it.) Paying for the meal also seemed to take a while. We stood in front of the cash register looking at nearly every staff member in the place, but no one would ring us up. I hope they're able to step up their game for the next time. If i can get anything lower on the scale I would give it a zero. I come in at 453 on a Friday with 3 customers. Literally nobody acknowledge you as you come in. After tryna get ppls attention a waiter comes up and ask me if i needed help. I respond to tell her my orders. The manager (Monica Love) on her name tag was in the back looking right at me in the middle of a conversation and still didn't say anything. A customer with his wife talked to me about they noticed I wasn't acknowledged either and talked about how they were not checked on. The manager brought me one order didn't look at me and continued to talked about how my order hasn't came in yet "they were working on it she say. Nobody in drive through. Oy, this place is the worst. Plan to stay 25% longer than you've anticipated while you wait for your food/the right food/your server/etc... Plan to feel like you've wasted time and energy as you are treated like a chump for telling them that you did not get what you ordered. Plan to tell your server how to do their job, because they're (most likely) a new employee and you'll (most likely) never see him/her again. That's the way it is here. Expect it. My big, million dollar question is: why do they offer drive-thru service when employees struggle to master the sit-down service??? Does corporate REALLY think that one more distraction to the employees will make them more efficient at their jobs? It just doesn't work. Food: I have eaten here on many occassions and the food is usually fresh and tasty, when you get it in a timely fashion. Otherwise, well you know. Cost: This place is great for cheap food, but read on... Dining Area: Tables are always dirty, they usually have to clean one for me. The floor are always filthy, greasy with food just laying about. Parking: Parking lot is sufficient Service: Usually the service is hit or miss, there are times when they have messed up an order or they have taken too long, but they are quick to fix their mistakes and offer a discount if necessary, however that doesn't make up for the fact that if you watch the waitresses and waiters long enough you'll see them pick up trash off the floor and then serve food and give out utensils without washing their hands (This happened on my last visit). Read the Health Dept score when you walk on , it will be on the wall to the left as you walk in. You'll see they scored a 70, that's right, a 70 and if you read why you'll see hand washing was an area they were lacking. if you value your health avoid this place. I stopped going to the establishment about a year ago when I noticed two huge roaches crawling around the floors and old food was under the seats and stainless steel appliances (which is still that way to this day). The manager at the time grabbed a napkin and crushed the huge roaches in front of us and said "I hope that doesn't change your opinion of us", it dang sure didn't help! Myself and another customer ended up leaving that day without eating. Summary: Bottom of the barrel health dept scores, filthy and disgusting floors and tables coupled with commonplace slow service and messing up orders convinces me to value my life more and avoid this place. read more

This is by far the worst Steak N Shake in the country. How this place is still open or hasn't been commandeered by corporate for a total staff overhaul is beyond me. I'd say their order accuracy is about 25%, meaning your order will only be correct every fourth time you come here. And the attitudes might be worse than the wait. Now I know what you're thinking, "why is this girl expecting 5-star service at Steak N Shake?" Let me clarify - I don't expect perfection, but I do expect basic service. The person in the drive through always needs a minute before you order (read: 5 minutes) and one time they handed me my food, and I sat at the window for another 5 minutes before the girl said "what are you waiting on?" With a bit of disbelief in my voice I said, "my two milkshakes..?" To which she responded "oh SH!T" and proceeded to turn around and yell further obscenities at her coworkers. Classy. All I'm saying is, if you want to lose a little faith in humanity watching the struggle and lose a few brain cells by pure association with this staff while you enjoy a greasy burger, welcome home. I was expecting Five Guys quality food but I could probably make a better burger at home. It wasn't nasty, there's flavor, but it didn't look anything like the picture the burger was flat and overcompensated with lettuce and tomato etc. I also didn't like the fries, they are so tiny and skinny it's like eating the edges of Burger King fries. The fries are annoying. The milkshakes were also bad, they are what I'd imagine frozen milk to taste like. There's no creaminess to them at all, very icy and watered down. They should really consider improving everything, starting with the shakes and thickness of the burger, if I didn't want lettuce or any extras on my burger I would be highly upset to pay $9 for a flat piece of meat when I could go to the grocery store and buy a pack of burgers for the same price. read more

The newest Steak n Shake to grace Atlanta ranks just like every other Steak n Shake. As a chain, there's nothing too special, but this location's proximity to Emory's campus makes it a popular lunch and dinner spot. The burgers, as always, are fantastic somewhat greasy morsels, topped with your choice of a wide variety of toppings. While the patties aren't thick like restaurants, they're also a far cry from the cardboard-like fare found at all other fast food joints, even Wendy's with their fresh, never frozen style. Of course, a trip isn't complete without a shake, and the shakes are awesome. Hand-dipped, hand-blended shakes like a diner, a far cry from soft serve that's been melted a bit. All right for their 4 meals for under $4. That's really all I have to say. Well, that's not really fair. Their steakburgers are one-of-a-kind and very good. I like that they're fried on a grill and pressed down and that makes the edges extra crispy. They also have really great chili and tastes even better with cheese and onions sprinkled on top. Oh... I almost forgot the "shake" part of Steak and Shake. Delicious milkshakes! And they're HUGE! I love to mix two flavors like vanilla and strawberry. The cookies and cream is good, too. The team here is really nice and, in my opinion, I think that's what sets them apart. Today at lunch I was at the counter. My order came out wrong, but that's okay. I also heard a few other customers saying the same thing. This is by far the worst Steak N Shake ever, and it's embarrassing that it's in an area with high quality restaurants. Went there today, the employee failed to recognize that he had placed four heavy beverages on a flimsy beverage carrier. As a result, as he's handing them to me, the tray gives way, causing everything to fall on my truck--inside and out. His response wasn't an apology. Instead, he asked me what all did I drop. Then I had to ask for paper towels as he saw no need to bring me any. Then he rudely says that I need to pull up because he's going to have to bring my order out to me. When he brings the order, he has a drink order wrong. When I told him that it should be a Sprite. He says "No. You ordered a Coke." I told him that I did not because I do not drink Coke. He goes back inside to return my Sprite. He never apologizes! After we leave, we recognize that our sandwiches weren't prepared as ordered. Horrible, Horrible Disservice. Will not go back. Food came out pretty fast on a Friday night! I've been to this location years ago and haven't been back since because I remember my stomach trying to eat itself from such a long wait. However, this time food seemed to fly out! I was starving when I walked in and time usually seems even longer when you are already grumpy from starving. Our waitress was so sweet! She checked on us multiple times just to ask if we needed anything. I wish I had caught her name to give a shout out. I was too distracted by my desire for shoestring fries, which prompted the revisit. The burger was cooked and all the topping were as excepted. I was a pretty happy camper when I left. If I was feeling generous, I would blame it on heading to a Steak n Shake at midnight-thirty during prom season. But I've been to a lot of Steak n Shakes in my day, and friend, someone needs to tell them to get their shit together. I want to like Steak n Shake so much. With their crispy-juicy lumps of burger decked in the finest pickle slices, their delightful poultry sandwich selections and so many creamy varieties of milkshake - and all available at 3 am - they are the King of drunk grub. (And Waffle House is their Queen, but I digress.) Plus, it is DIRT CHEAP, Y'ALL. But every one I've ever been to has the same service problem. You walk in, sigh at the "Please Wait to be Seated," sign, because you know that it's just mocking you. You wait. And you wait. And you wait. And you think, this all seems familiar. But I like Steak n Shake, you think. You're finally seated, after a small crowd begins to form in the doorway. Others are seated as well, causing a panic among the waitstaff as to who will serve whom, as though they've never had to deal with multiple tables being sat at once. Because they're all exhausted and hate their jobs and by association, their lives at this moment. Because every Steak n Shake I've been in has been understaffed, with servers performing their own duties, as well as bussing, hosting, and take-out duties. You wait some more. But... but, I like Steak n Shake, you think again. Wait, wait, wait. Menu. Wait. Mind-change? Wait. Huh, they have cookies now? Wait. Finally, someone comes to take your order. (The table that sat after you is already stuffing their face with burger.) Your food comes quickly enough, but your shakes arrive halfway through your meal. Because the guy who does the shakes is ALWAYS backed up. And maybe one or two things came out wrong. Your poor server, you think. Poor guy. And you just KNOW that the table full of post-prom 17 year-olds blowing straw wrappers at each other is going to stiff him. I feel like it's the same experience every time, and this one was no different. Waiting, waiting, food is tasty (but presentation suffers), mistakes are made, staff is flustered. Good lord steak and shake. I was so excited in high school when this first came in. I actually thought my life would be changed forever....so young, so naive! The shakes are awesome. The rest of the restaurant is pretty bad. The service is terrible. The place isn't very clean. Everyone understands what this place is about: shakes. They are great to have at midnight. 8am. Karen was very rude and first off upon arrival we were standing for about 7 minutes before we were even sat by a member of kitchen staff that saw us waiting Karen then walked passed us stating she wasn't taking any more tables , Karen finally came to our table to tell us they we're out of chicken and bacon and took our order , after that Karen NEVER RETURNED WITH OUR ORDER . After waiting another 15 minutes we asked for a manager and while speaking with the manager Karen stated "she wasn't coming back" to our table. And sure enough never returned everyone in this restaurant saw what was going on and ignored and complained about how they weren't helping with anybody else's table . We were FINALLY REASSIGNED TO MONICA L and she did the best she could, upon paying our tab we asked to speak to the manager again. He came up to the front and say "what's yo problem" And "Karen said y'all cursed her out about us being out of bacon" me and my 64 year old father would never curse anyone out let alone over bacon. It had been close to 20 years since I'd been in a Steak'n'Shake. My memories are mostly positive: table service, real flatware and stone wear dishes, and product quality a step or two (in some cases, three or four) above most fast-food burger joints, including milk shakes made from dairy products, not from recycled grocery bags. Today, it was time to have lunch; there was a Steak'n'Shake just across the street (2839 N Druid Hills Rd NE -- Toco Hill); and my interest had been peaked by good memories and the chain's 4-4-4 advertising campaign. There was a "Please wait to be seated" just inside the door, and we did ... wait ... and wait. There was a server at the cash register taking care of a customer; another employee was putting out a fresh supply of clean glasses; there was a server waiting on a table to our right. No one acknowledged us or bothered to say "Hello, someone will be right with you." It would have been easy enough for someone to point us to a table; there were plenty available. Just as we were preparing to leave, the server who had been at the register came over and showed us to a booth. Items at Steak'n'Shake are cooked to order, which means a longer wait than at most fast-food joints. Even allowing for that, the wait for our food was longer than it should have been. Other fast-food establishments that cook to order--Five Guys comes to mind as a comparable case--are quicker. When the food was ready, it sat in the window for several minutes before our server noticed it there and brought it out. The food was good, but not exceptional. The brioche bun on my burger was very good, and the meat patty was real chopped steak, not just ground beef product. The fries are "match stick" cut, very thin, not as crisp as one might expect given the cut. If you're considering the Cajun fries, save the 29-cent upcharge and use the Cajun spice shaker on your table; that's all they do in the kitchen. My partner's Coke was refilled during the meal; my iced tea was not. About midway through our meal, a couple of pink-shirted managers appeared from somewhere at the back of the dining room. It appeared that they had been jawboning with some visiting friends. If the service staff is stretched too thin to greet customers promptly and serve them efficiently, the pink shirts might consider stepping up to ensure a good experience for everyone. read more

Went to drive thru on Sunday morning. I ordered a drink, 2 sausage egg & cheese biscuits and 1 royale steak burger. After having to repeat my order three times because she wasn't paying attention. Of course she was rude when I paid and of course I was told to pull forward. After a considerable wait she opened the door and leaned out not looking at me and handed me my food. I drove down the street and decided I would check the order. Of course it was wrong in many ways, bagel not biscuit s and bacon not sausage. I drove back and went to drive thru and they wouldn't come to window so I went in. The three ghetto chicks rude women didn't apologize; they only seemed annoyed. So I waited again for another 25 mins and it was obvious they threw the meal together in a fit of anger. My drink was Dr. Pepper not Diet Coke. Forget this place. This is my Favorite fast food restaurant but when I went to the Steak 'n Shake in Toco Hills, I was greatly disappointed the customer service was atrocious we waited in the drive-through line for about 20 minutes when we finally got to the intercom to give our order we waited another five minutes I asked the young lady if there was going to be another delay she said nothing. When I finally placed my order they had no onions. And frustration I left when I called to speak to a manager the young man that answered asked me what the problem was again I asked to speak to a manager he told me to call back in 15 minutes I will not be going back to this location again read more

Can't really say anything bad or good about this location. Service was ok, except for one minor screwup on the order, which was resolved quickly, and we got a free order of fries out of the mistake (they offered, we did not ask). Their new "Chicago Dog" on the menu is not spectacular by any means. The pickle relish had the wrong flavor, and was actually dyed such a vibrant green, it appeared to be diced lime jello. read more

This place is okay, it could definitely be better. I find that dining inside adds to the experience in a positive way. Last visit I had the Oktoberfest Combo and dined in. My waiter was attentive, and upbeat., I didn't have to look to him to refill my drink. The Oktoberfest burger had all of the makings to be a hit, but the cook SMOTHERED it in Dijon mustard...so I really couldn't tell you what it really tasted like.. between the tears, and sniffles, I managed to get it down. I didn't bother complaining to the waiter as I wasn't alone, and I was starving by the time I got it so I practically bit off half of it straightaway. This is the closest S&S to me, so Ill be back and maybe I will try the Oktoberfest again...I'll remember to tell them to GO LIGHT ON THE DIJON MUSTARD! read more

After tonight , I refuse to service this establishment . Every time I've gone here after work , I've ended up being in the line for about 15-30 minutes . Only ONCE was I given an apology . By now , these people should know when their peak hours are so that they can accommodate their guests . But to literally be sitting at a stand still for that long is unsatisfactory. To add insult to injury , when I got to the window tonight , the young lady at the window must've been rushing or overwhelmed because I was asking to scan my app and she turned to her manager and said " Can you help her because I don't know what she's saying ." Smh . The manager helped me but then goes to tell the young lady who was on the window and taking orders " After this car , you're gonna have to make them wait 15 minutes ". Since when is that acceptable ?!! In any fast foods establishment to make the customers voluntarily wait 15 minutes for food with no type of incentive . I'm utterly disgusted !!
