Can't go much higher. I guess I am a ground beef kind of person. Ground steak, the size of a McDonald's Big Mac, burns. I do love the skinny fries and if you can get there at Happy Hour you can't beat the price of the shakes. My last trip was my birthday. Not sure what good the birthday coupon was for, they didn't give a discount. Watch out for the Chili Mac... they have 3 kinds and kind of bring you whichever one they want and actually told me last time that they no longer have Parmesan cheese. Bring your own? It's Steak n' Shake. It's open 24 hours. What more do you need to know? Steak n' Shake is a good option for your late night burger fix, and this location is a good representation of the brand. The steakburgers are thin, so don't shy away from a double decker...it's not that huge of a burger. Their burgers are seared hot so they're crispy on the edges, which is the reason to come here. The food comes out quickly, and is very inexpensive. They're not kidding when they say that they have a large $4 meal section in their menu, and the portions are large enough that you won't leave hungry. I enjoyed the Three Pepper Steakburger, which had just the right amount of spice for my palate. When we were there in October my husband got the Oktoberfest Steakburger, which was interesting but gave the impression that they were trying for something fancy and complex and ended up short of the mark. The fries are good if you like shoestring-type fries, but they are so thin that they get cold almost immediately. Eat them first if you get them, they're not worth the calories cold. I'd say that in any given Steak n' Shake the odds are 50/50 that your fries will come to the table cold. Seriously, they have about a 5 minute shelf life. Avoid the footlong Chicago Dog...they have the ingredients right but the quality isn't up to Chicago standard, and if you know how good a true Chicago Dog can be you'll just be disappointed. read more

Steak & Shake gets 3 stars. I go here with the kids to get them a milkshake, which are yummy. The food is typical. It's good but not a bang for your buck. Why is it that every Steak & Shake has such slow service? It doesn't take that long to slap a frozen burger on the grill & cook the thin thing. This location is clean and always has friendly service. Typically when I think of steak 'n shake, I don't exactly think of good service. I was pleasantly surprised when I ate inside at this location for the first time. Not only did our food and shakes come out in a timely manor, but everyone working was pleasant and personable. I found it especially virtuous when our server let us know that someone else would be bringing out our food since she was able to go on break.The inside smelled like it had been freshly cleaned as well, and while my boyfriend and myself were there the busses never stopped cleaning. This was refreshing since I have been in some NASTY steak 'n Shakes before. I have also gone through the drive thru at this location numerous times, and have always had a good experience. This has been my favorite steak 'n shake to date, and I felt leaving them a great review was needed! read more

Usually when you go into a restaurant you expect to sit down and be served. However this is not the case with this steak 'n Shake. After walking in your asked to order your food at the counter without having seen a menu are then told that you can sit wherever you like and when your food comes out it's in a bag all prepared to go. Steak N Shake has always had the best milkshakes. I have always loved them. My husband and I got one tonight. OMG what happened I'm so disappointed. The whip cream was horrible. Best I can explain it Is like they went to the dollar tree and bought the cheapest worst whip cream ever. Not spoiled but more like whipped lard. It had no flavor at all. Yuk just nasty. The most pitiful SnS drive-thru of all time! I figure I was in the drive-thru lane for at least 30 minutes behind three cars. Got down to one car left in front of me and thought we were slowly making progress. Nope! They messed up their shake order and had to make another one. Instead of having the car pull up so they could cash me out they have them wait at the window while my food gets cold. It was noon and the floors not only had food all over it but a black dirt. I know you can have a run and get slammed but no way by noon it could look in that condition. Those floors had not been moped in a very long time. I do not see how they could pass health inspection. If the dinning room and bathrooms looked like that what does the kitchen look like??? It's a major fall from grace for this place. Because it's almost hard to believe that this used to be good restaurant. I remember actually wanting to go to Steak 'N Shake because I really loved so many of their burgers and sandwiches. But now, the thought of eating here just turns my stomach. This place is simply filthy and it makes you think twice about what you're eating. The tables and floors look like they haven't been cleaned in days and the silverware doesn't look much better. And the staff seem like they couldn't care less. Now with all that being said, if you are brave enough to order some food, it's generally decent. That table said they'd waited an hour for food, and the table behind them dealt with the same thing. And they didn't even appear short staffed for a Saturday. My wife and I went to this Steak 'n Shake last night. We ordered a couple milkshakes with our meal. Our meal came before the milkshakes. I asked the waiter where our milkshakes were. He said that they were busy and it would be awhile for the shakes. I told him that I would like something to drink with the meal and told him to get me a Coke and hurry up with the shakes, because we would like them before we finish our meal. Our shakes came as we were finishing our meal. I told him to take them back and take them off our bill. I am in a power wheel chair. I came into your establishment on May 11 after I had been to a church function.Before I was even asked to table...I wanted to use the rest room. I could not get my chair between the stools at the counter and the boots because there was no room. There is also no room between the tables and the booths on the other side. I called and spoke to Angel and she gave me the email for the manager...who I might add has never returned my email and today is 5/23/12. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Ok usually Steak and Shake is just that. But this time around, not so much. Me and 5 others arrive and the place is barely half full. We're seated quickly.. at a borderline dirty table. Our waitress arrives and is flatter than week old soda. Rude. Boring. Mean. Acting like she doesn't give a crap about us. We get our drinks fine and I got my chili and it was fine. After waiting for about 7 minutes (which is a good time for 6 people) a guy, who is definitely not out waitress, comes with our food. The order isn't messed up but where's our waitress? Mind you it's not busy whatsoever. (I work at a restaurant, I know busy) Then, another waitress person I don't even know?? comes and asks if we need anything else, like she's trying to help our waitress like she's busy? We say we need napkins, silverware, and I needed a small side of pickles. She says OK with a smile.. and NEVER comes back?!?! We ate our entire meal WITHOUT napkins or silverware. Still no sign of our waitress and we need refills. No one showed up and we were basically sharing drinks that hadn't already been drank because 4/6 of us were out. So now we're without napkins, wiping on our pants, no silverware, and no drinks. The only other time I saw our waitress that night was because we stopped her for the check. We were out of there almost faster than we got in. Absolutely horrible. Save your pants and go to Culver's. read more

This particular Steak 'n Shake is terrible. Every aspect of the meal we had there was bad. We we not seated for over 20 minutes (they weren't busy). One waitress told me to go to the back a pull up my own chair. The table she seated my group at was too small so, with my pulled up chair I would have been sitting in the aisle. Then, they cleared a larger table that had dishes on it. And by cleared, I mean the waiter put these dishes on another table where they remained for the rest (2 hours) of our meal. When we were seated, our waiter messed up our drink order. When he came back, he wrote our food order on a placemat. During our visit, several other groups and came in and left because no one ever sat them and if they were sat, they were not served. I did see about 5 employees this evening. We waited on our food for at least 45 minutes and when he brought it to us, several of the orders were missing items. We told him what we ordered and when he came back, he only had some of the items. We corrected him and sent him back again. He NEVER ended up bringing us the rest of our order. We spent over two hours there to never receive all of our food. He also messed up our check significantly more than he messed up our orders. I actually called the survey number and they took my information and said they would contact me but they never did. Every aspect of this meal was stressful and not enjoyable. Will not be returning. read more

I love Steak n Shake and I am a frequent customer but I wont be returning to the Columbus, Indiana location. It's one thing if your food isn't that great, but when customer service is that poor, there is a serious issue. The restaraunt was not busy, and my waitress (heather) asked me two times within the first two minutes of being seated if I was ready to order yet. She gave me no time to browse the menu. I felt like she was in such a hurry that I ordered something quickly. After bringing my food, along with my check (assuming I wouldn't want anything else) she never once returned to my table to inquire how my food tasted or to give me a drink refill. When leaving, I still left her a tip, due to the fact I have been a waitress before and understand its her income... however, she most certainly didn't deserve it. Have always enjoyed Steak N Shake while growing up in Indiana. The Columbus, Indiana restaurant is very poorly managed. I have orderd food there, and upon it being delivered to the table, I was told there was no silverware available. My Final experience was standing by the door, waiting to be seated for near 10 minutes, as one young man was cooking, and not another soul in sight, except for 8 or ten people in the dining area. Just left the Steak and Shake on Darlage Dr. !st time we've been there in several years and had the grandkids with us this time. Took an HOUR to get our food. 1st order was apparently "lost". 2nd order was supposedly a "rush". Still was an hour before our food showed up. No comment or apology from any manager.
