Definitely a different experience, ordering at the kiosks compared to when they used to take the order at the table. However, it's very easy to navigate, and our order was perfectly correct. I chose the Frisco melt for the first time at this visit and it was very delicious. I also tried onions rings for the first time...also very good. I ended my visit with a Butterfinger shake that hit the spot. My only complaint was the trail of ants that I kept killing near my table. My first visit to Kentucky started with eating at this place. It's definitely something that I won't encounter often especially since California doesn't have restaurants like these. Had the garlic cheeseburger and I thought it was ok. The fries were crispy but they didn't bring out as much cheese for these fries. As for the burger, it was similar to the Buttery Jack from Jack in the Box. Service was fine, it was mostly just helping yourself out at the end. Once again, had a great experience at this location a year later. Didn't even realize but I ordered the same thing as I did a year ago. Tasted just as good as it did the last time. Maybe even better. I wanted to try Steak 'n Shake once and since they didn't have any locations near where we lived, we figured we'd check this one out while on vacation Kentucky. On our way there I figured I'd look on Yelp to maybe get some recommendations of good items to order. Wow, it's mainly all 1 and 2 star reviews. That was a little concerning. But I figured maybe people were just too picky and expecting too much from a fast food joint. We got a few burger combos (single cheeseburger and some garlic thing). Got a few milkshakes since it's in the name too. Man the milkshakes were sickeningly sweet. I guess kids and teens might like it but goodness it was hard to drink more than a sip of the strawberry and banana ones. The chocolate one was okay because I added some water to it but definitely sweeter than a lot of fast food shakes. Figured the burgers would be good since I'm not too picky about fast food burgers. Nope. Disappointing. Hardly any flavor. The outer wrapper was soaked in grease too. I ate a few bites and just didn't want any more (very rare experience for me). Fries were just okay. We didn't finish those either. This location seemed okay. Very convenient. Employee was friendly. Got our order correct. Had a nice uniform on that looked sharp. But given the taste of the food, I don't think we'll be heading to a Steak 'n Shake again. read more

As others have said, this location is very slow. Also: paper straws. Have you ever tried to drink a thick milkshake with a paper straw? It seems unlikely to me that any decision maker at Steak N Shake headquarters has ever tried using a paper straw because it's pretty difficult and unpleasant. If they had, they probably wouldn't be passing out paper straws. read more

My husband and I took advantage of our big kid watching the little and went to lunch and ran errands. We were close to steak and shake and also longhorns (a favorite) but we wanted burgers so went with the diner. -- busy when we arrived- I have only been a handful of times and never had a bad experience but it's never been busy when I have been there. The busyness just added to the fun and did not affect the speed at which food arrived or getting drinks or assistance.. good job! -food--- we both got the 4 for 4$ with cheeseburger, fries, cole slaw, and a cookie... I substituted the slaw for salad and it was awesome. Nice fresh salad, LOVE the skinny fries and they were hot, and the burger was awesome! We were there right before 2 pm and was going to get a half price shake to go since we'd hit their happy hour but we were both too full and satisfied from our tasty lunch. Service-- excellent! Courteous, professional, happy and friendly. Our waitress, Natasha, was there when we needed here and was genuine. When I asked her a basic question about something I just needed an opinion on- about myself- ultimately, she made me feel good while eating food that tastes really good (though my health my scoff :) The overall mood where we were sitting was just happy... a good song came on and employees were singing quietly and just appeared to be enjoying doing their job.... Recently, I started a new job in NKY and have always liked Steak & Shake but the low star reviews for this location deterred me at first. I finally decided to give it a shot and surprisingly had a great experience. I ordered a Frisco Melt Meal through the drive thru. My ordered was accurate, and what needed to be hot was hot, and my drink was cold. My sandwich was hot, not warm --but hot. Needless to say, I'll be back. Waited for about 5 minutes since the sign said wait to be seated, nobody ever even acknowledged us. We tried to find some menus but could only find a breakfast one even though it was dinner, after a while we gave up. After attempting to eat inside and nobody greeting us or seating us we tried the drive through and found this sign. This was our second ever visit to Steak 'n Shake, we went to one in Cincinnati for our first visit and loved it. We went there even though we live in Florence because of the reviews and honestly we will probably never come back to this one because of the reviews and our experience failing to be noticed and served. Well I thought the poor reviews may have been a fluke but they are not. I saw the cook wipe his nose twice while prepping food with the same hand. They got my order wrong and then assumed I'd like lots of extra cheese on what was previously wrong as a way of making amends which ended up drenching the fries in too much cheese and causing me to not get to really enjoy them much. The work environment seemed dirty and chaotic. I would recommend management work on quality control and hygiene rules. I didn't get a receipt but it's possible they may have charged me for the more expensive and wrong item because I was surprised my meal cost so much. But they didn't bother to check. read more

This best thing about this location is the wait to be seated. It gives you a chance to observe the pace of service and the quality of food so you can reconsider a questionable life choice. But like so many, I decided to pursue a less than ideal situation. It did take a while to be seated. And like too many places, I never received napkins and utensils. The food actually came out in decent time. The fries were a bit a strange - over battered? The cookie tastes like an off brand of Chips Ahoy that went stale. The shakes were delayed by confusion and not well made. While the staff was pleasant, the staff level was not adequate - it never is at this location. Itty Bitty French Fries! Ok here is the thing. It's not fine dining. But it's fast food with a diner feel. The menu is varied enough that you can certainaly find something you like. I love the Carolina Slaw dog and That Boy is a fan of the chicken fingers. They also make delicious milkshakes. The service is really dependent on your waiter. Two times we have gotten this one guy, and he is really amazing, especially considering his young appearance and the fact that he works at Steak 'n Shake. I wish i could remember his name but I'm always terrible at that. Anyways. Not everyone is a fan, but for late night or a quick lunch I'm never really let down. Plus I love the little bitty fries. You know I really hate leaving bad reviews (my track record would verify that) but this place really dropped the ball this time. While we've had a mixed bag of service here the food always made it worthwhile. This time not even that was the case. I got the Frisco Melt and Fries as well as a footlong chili dog. The Frisco Melt does keep it's perfect record as a great sandwich with the awesome Frisco sauce on there as well as the Steakburger and swiss all on the sourdough bread. A simply phenomenal sandwich. However the usual tremendous shoestring fries that are a staple of Steak And Shake were cooked in obviously very old grease which made them next to inedible. We got some new ones and they were marginally better since they were fresher but the burnt flavour remained from the grease. Disappointing. Also on the subject of burnt was my footlong. The chili and cheese toppings were all fine but the hot dog itself was just incinerated. Not burnt like in the good way you burn a dog on a charcoal grill but just burnt to the point that all you tasted was burn. For dessert I got the FruitLoop shake which was the third of their breakfast shakes that I've tried (Honey Smacks and Frosted Flakes being the other two.) Like those they just basically mix the cereal in within a vanilla shake. It wasn't terrible but I still find myself wishing that they would have done something to help elevate the FruitLoops to make it a little more exciting of a shake. Considering how good some of their other shakes on their menu are these breakfast ones don't hold up to those. And the waitress while not rude was not exactly friendly or helpful either. We were in town for a wedding. Stopped here on a Saturday night for dinner since it was close to our hotel. Wow. They were busy. It took a long time for someone to seat us. Our food came out first, and it was pretty tasty. However, our shakes took quite a long time. We were finally given them in to go cups. They were quite gritty, and no one could finish theirs. The guy that made our order got some things mixed up and forgot part of our order. I got the garlic cheeseburger the second time around. It was good. You can definitely taste the garlic. The buns were so greasy. The fries were okay - they weren't the best. I've had fries at various Steak N Shakes and I normally enjoyed them but at this place, I just didn't like them. I also tried the double cheeseburger with no tomato. It was basic. It tasted like any other burger. For burgers that are $4.99 and less, I shouldn't have expected anything more. We waited 20+ minutes in drive thru for a Chicken Tender meal and a chocolate shake. We were charged for the wrong order, then given 1.00 cash back, we paid with C.C. , and mgr. said that would make it right. We never received correct receipt. Then when my husband pulled out the $6.00 chicken tender meal. There were 2 very small tenders and half full and half cooked small container of fries. This was by far the worst Steak n' Shake we have ever patronized. We still cannot believe it. A kids meal wouldn't have been this small, and they certainly didn't charge us for a child. I really hate to give only one star. I just want this place to get back on its feet, honestly. We've been going to this Steak and Shake for over a decade and in the past year or so, it's suddenly become the most disappointing experience every time we give it another try. Tonight has taken 30 mins in the drive thru. We didn't want to just leave and normally we would've but we wanted to give them a chance. It sounds like they've had a rough night from what we could hear workers saying through the window in the kitchen. They also have a lot of cars pulling out of the line behind us that had already ordered. They also said something about the computers not working? But what is the worst part is that when you finally get to the window, no one even acknowledges your wait time. No apology. I come to this Steak 'n Shake quite frequently. I am upset at the menu changes and it seems every time I come here the service gets slower and slower. I ordered my shake an hour ago and my food not too long after. I am still waiting. I will not be back here anytime soon. I usually have fantastic service but today it is pitiful. I have seen people walk in after me and have gotten both their shakes and food before I have. This place is called Steak 'n Shake.
